It would be funny if the third playable species was an actual cuttlefish but instead of looking like the Inklings and Octolings, they look like small Cthulus and they communicate using psychic powers
There’s one thing that makes me doubtful of another species being given the same treatment as the inklings and octolings: there’s very few species that lend themselves as naturally to the idea of “ink” as squids and octos. It’s already sort of a stretch that salmonids deal with ink at all, but I really feel like any other species would feel kind of forced.
i agree- and there are no major lore implications, unlike octolings release in splatoon 2. it would be super random if we suddenly got a new playable species. the only species with ink capacity like squids and octos would have to be more cuttlefish, and the only evidence of them are the cuttlefish idols in octo expansion (their designs look identical to inklings). it would be cool in theory to have more species playing turf war with us, but lorewise i dont think it would work. (also salmonids aren't anthropomorphic and i dont see us playing as smallfry in the future)
Yeah, the thing that a lot of people don't understand is that there's an aesthetic theme to the game that would be hurt by adding new playable races that are unintuitive and don't tie into the theme. If a shark or a jellyfish can participate in turf war, then at that point, what was stopping all the other species from doing it from the beginning? If someone saw a sharkling on the cover art of a splatoon game, they would have to assume that the characters are just playing with water as opposed to ink, because sharks can't produce ink. You have to disregard both the theme and basic human intuition in order to argue for any race other than an ink producing aquatic mollusk
@@catsquid2632 I think it could be a humanoid salmonid because we’ve seen them produce ink (which doesn’t make sense but it’s in lore) and they’ve been featured heavily in salmon run especially with the story mode and the big run and I think it could work like how the octo expansion was where you defect from salmonid society and have to escape to the surface
i mean i think all species can use ink bcs in one of the splatoon interviews we actually get to know that some of the bands drummers (who aren't octolings or inklings) actually play turf wars and have a competitive team
Hot take: but I think we need more customization options for both Inklings and Octolings before we get a third “ling” species. The octolings need their own versions of the inkling hairstyles and inklings should have their own variations on the ones that are exclusive to the octolings.
It would be cool but cannot be, bcs octoling's hair is more like curly and wavy, and inklings is more straight hair, so getting straight octolings hair will be very strange and the same with inklings. Te only thing I want is a octoling hair with a fringe
I have an idea for an extra customization option; it’s voice range/type customization. It’s kinda like the customization in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, where you can change the voice of your mii to whatever voice you want as well as edit the pitch to higher or lower. I would like something less timid sounding and more bold and broad for my octoling character, as a soft voice doesn’t fit her personality. I definitely can’t wait to see more hairstyle options for octolings too, one hairstyle I’d like is a pixie cut style with a bang draping over the eye, kinda like the style of original octolings from hero mode
While I do think that they shouldn't be too similar to keep them unique to species, I do want longer hairstyles for Octos. I love long hair and the octolings, so it's always bummed me out that they have shorter hair. TwT
Worth adding that the unique quirk of Octarians and Octolings existing is because of actual Octopus biology, and it’s pretty dark. The tentacles have mini brains within them, to aid in control, and octopi are incredibly smart, so the Octarians are literally just the chopped off tentacles of Octolings used as the grunt labor of their society. We don’t see any on the surface because Octolings aren’t being forced to mutilate themselves for slave labor.
Imagine if they add cuttlefish and you can customize the eye color more like the pupil shape like how Callie and Marie r cuttlefish and have gold star eyes
I'd imagine if we actually did get another, it would be another cephalopod. Or another creature that can produce a substance that's similar to ink, or maybe even a think mucus.
I'm absolutely certain that it needs to be a cephalopod because that's a huge part of the theme of the setting. Octolings were only added because they are intuitively associated with Inklings, cuttlefish or nautilus would be the only viable candidates. And the furthest stretch that I think would be something like a sea slug, since they are also mollusks and some species can produce ink
I always thought the next species would be Vampire Octolings, because vampire octopuses are separate from regular octopi due to their webbed tentacles. Furthermore, since all other cephalopods exist in game (Squids, Octopi, Cuttlefish, and Nautiluses) it would make sense
well, i'd personally have to disagree because if you check the hairstyle used for the main octoling in the splat3 promo (with the gal), the tentacles are webbed in the back
@@Balnazzari That wouldn’t make sense, they would’ve designed her to be more like an octoling in that case as in Japanese they’re called “vampire octopus”. Also vampire “squids” are their own different class separate from octopus, and since the Splatoon devs do a lot a research into marine life, a vampire-ling would have a lot of differences from both species
Either samonlings or rabbits from the moon to reference both the concept of the first game and Japanese mythology which Nintendo loves to reference. Oh, and if it's the second one add in the story that maybe some other rockets escaped and one made a moon base which somehow caused its own psychic genetic memory alteration event leading to their evolution in consciousness.
@@Sombra_zx honestly both are pretty cool ideas. And lore expansion is inevitable with either being introduced causing potential future enemies for future games and conflicts plus more into how the marine life in the games really function as living things but also as sentient things too given their..... unique creation method.
@@guywholikesmemes4993 i think the rabbits being Humanoids with Rabbit ears on the head, of course this rabbit along lil Buddy they will need to stop Lil Judd and just teach this little cat kid that world destruction is not okay, but he wants to kill his dad
@@Sombra_zx lil judd has had massive insecurity complexes since his introduction in the second game, it's gonna be a big deal like grizz cause of the build up (especially post 3's main story mode with the hints) and its perhaps going to involve time travel if the back to the future references are any indication which also come from salmon run, quite noteworthy eh?
@@guywholikesmemes4993 yeah, and lil judd will be a pet for The lesbians of marina and pearl, the new second judge is Judd jr the Brother of lil judd, Jr is a perfect clone of judd but his hair is different from papa judd
A bit of a weird pick since they're freshwater amphibians rather than sea creatures, but insatiably curious Axolotlings running around with funny little webbed hands, big doofy smiles, and hairstyles modeled after their bristly gill stalks would be absolutely adorable
What if there was a Splatfest on three different types of species, and we got to choose which one we liked best? That would be really cool, we could decide the fate/storyline of Splatoon 3 or the possible DLC, given that we already did that during the Order vs. Chaos Splatfest in Splatoon 2.
I think the Harelings or Vampire Inklings since vampire squids aren’t squids or octopi make most sense, since they produce ink, things like salmonlings wouldn’t work very well since they don’t make ink and their swim form would look dumb, anemone would be cute but the issue still lies in their swim form
@@MILOEBA I don’t think it’s ink, it appears to be the water in which they live, and the reason it’s fired like ink is likely due to the mechanics of the octarian tech they use
@@CephaVa I don’t think it’s water, it’s all green and goopy, and are players react to it like regular old enemy ink that’s different from when they actually fall in the water
@@osiohanu8166 the water is highly polluted, that’s probably why they have a negative reaction to it, it could also be some sort of waste perhaps? It’s possible Salmonids are exposed to radiation I suppose
i think if we were to have a new speicies, the speicies would either be REALLY new to the world like their evolution happened not so long ago, or they were an aincient species who didnt want to serve any part in the great turf war
I just hope we either get A. Sub-species of Inklings and octolings that have different traits like Frye (who’s most likely and Vampire Squid), or B. Just makes those traits part of the customization options. What I mean is that now we have an ear, eye shape, tooth, height, and yes, a forehead option/toggle.
I feel like at the moment with the story, the most likely new species to come would be salmonlings. They'd be like a more mutated salmonid, since fish tend to adapt to their surroundings in real life, and salmonid usually get attacked when they migrate.
I was thinking if Nintendo would add a new playable species, cuttlelings (cuttlefish) would be next. For one, they’re cephalopods that can produce ink and we actually have canon reference books confirming the existence of cuttlefish - HaikaraWalker, the Japan-only artbook for Octo Expansion, mentions an interview with artists who are confirmed to be cuttlefish. Confusingly they’re called the Cuttlefish Girls (not to be confused with the Squid Sisters, who despite their grandpa’s name are squids and not cuttlefish and also not sisters) but it’s proof that cuttlefish-folk exist in the world of Splatoon. However, there are lots of fun cephalopod species to pick and choose as playable characters. Nautiloids are my second choice - I mean we already have a Nautilus in-game. Bobtail squids could be fun. So are vampire squids which are actually more related to octopuses than actual squids. However, my personal pick would be the argonaut, also known as the paper nautilus. More related to octopuses than actual nautiloids, their name comes from their egg-cases, which looks like a thin, papery nautilus shell. They look really cool and I wonder how Nintendo will implement this in the game. As for other creatures, I’m not sure. I had an idea for a sea turtle person as an NPC but unlike mammals and birds, we don’t know the fate of reptiles in this world. I don’t know how I feel about Salmonlings. EDIT: I wanted to add that non-cephalopods can play Turf Wars too. According to HaikaraWalker, three non-cephalopod Splatband members play in a Rainmaker team together - Kuze from Hightide Era (stonefish), Blow Bottom from Bottom Feeders (globefish) and Ryu-Chang from SashiMori (koi fish). They don’t produce ink since they’re all fish yet they still play Rainmaker, so I wouldn’t discount non-cephalopod playable characters off the list. Also, not all cephalopods produce ink like nautiloids and argonauts. Still don’t know how I feel about Salmonlings though
i feel like salmonlings would make sense, taking into account how salmonid biology shows that the environment a salmonid grows up in dictates what appearance and abilities they have. maybe a young salmonid living in the outskirts of inkling/octoling populated areas (maybe in places like slums?), could develop something similar to ink, become more humanoid, and be somewhat used to ink/octoling culture, explaining why they have no attachment to other salmonids in salmon run, as they couldve been in the splatlands at a very young age
@PartyPooper =( Dedicated? I'd say they were probably bored. Writing comments is what I like to do when bored, especially long ones documenting experiences with games or whatever.
Personally, I think the 3 more likely species to be playable are sea slugs jellyfish and starfish with jellyfish being the coolest idea in my opinion. Although... Sharks would be epic...
I feel the "Mantalings" would make the most sense. It makes the most sense because in the previous game, Splatoon 2, we started off with the idols Marina and Pearl. Marina is not a squid, she's an octopus instead. It just didn't make sense to me that we had an idol of a creature that wasn't playable. Until the Octo expansion came along. Once we got the Octo expansion, we now had access to being octolings (If you bought the DLC and completed it). So, if Big Man is one of the idols in the newest game, Splatoon 3, what is he representing? See where this is going? Maybe, in the Splatoon 3 DLC, Mantalings would be introduced. If that happened, Big Man would actually be representing something. Just like what happened with Marina but with Octolings. I'm not a theorist, this just kinda came into my head. Which means I did not research into this, so I'm probably wrong for some of it. Plus, I've only been playing the Splatoon games since early 2021. I started with Splatoon 2, and am currently playing Splatoon 3. I've never played the Original Splatoon either. Though I have watched several videos about it. Not that it matters.
salmonlings. it just is. Salmonids are getting so much more hidden lore, new representation in the story mode, and the Salmon Run mode is getting more accessible and more fleshed out. I would love to see this addition.
If they do happen, they need a small but noticeable fish beak that salmon have. Also the super meter full animation needs to have them look like the salmonids in a glowfly round
Salmonoids have a completely different culture than the inklings and octolings do. Salmonoids also look much different than the other fish characters we’ve seen, being completely devoid of humanoid traits and essentially just being big, sentient fish. Salmonlings aren’t a possibility.
@@red2coreblue584 theres also something to note against this though, salmonids end up growing into different things [the different boss salmonids and different lessers] depending on how their environment was when growing up, and as far as we know, no salmonid has grown up in a place like the splatlands or inkopolis. maybe salmonlings could grow up in the outskirts of these places, where anti-salmonid law is less enforced, leading to playable salmonlings? it makes enough sense imo
Imagine if the fuzzy ooze mixes with the crystal that made inklings and octarians and makes like a goo-human from the psychic imprint so they take the form of humans but they're ink like a Mudmouth or Goop from Ben 10. They could be the replacement for the octarians as the main antagonist of the series
I LOVE THE IDEA OF ADDING MORE CHARACTERS!...Except...they're going to need to be able to produce ink to actually compete....There's only a phew Cephalopods that ink.... I suppose that Cuttlefish and MAYBE ammonites could be an option! If they want to add jellyfish or other species, they're going to have to create a whole new system for them to be able to spread ink, and come up with new ways for them to be able to HIDE in the ink (or find a substitute). We could perhaps come up with whole new weapon classes for these creatures, and give them shields.
I'm late but Big man can produce ink so can salmanoids and I don't think there cephalopods so the best theory I can give is that the crystals also gave all sea life a ink sac so they can produce ink.
Salmonlings would be cool, they would be very interested in war and would be a special event and would play a remix of the octoling theme in the story modes
Conclusion: Another playable character could be coming in the future because it’d be cool. not that i dont want more playable characters but i dont think theres much evidence here
@@Tobythefirst1 braindead definitely isn’t the right word but with salmonlings they would also fight salmonids for a similar reason that octolings fight octarians
Sam Rockfish (the Splatoon version of Montgomery Gator): the salmonling bassist, he serves as the “muscle” of the gang, and he breaks through steel gates with a single punch. Sam fell off the balconies of Sam’s Salmon Golf and was split in half, his hands were upgraded to Glamrock InkBlu.
I feel like a cuttlefish has the highest chance of getting added because it uses ink as self defense just like the squids and octopuses. Plus, we have captain cuttlefish
to be fair cuttlelings already exist in the game, it’s in some art in octo expansion. It got confirmed I think but I don’t remember where and it may be fake
I believe that it’s going to be anemones. There was official splatoon 3 locker art that showed an anemone in the locker room, and it would make sense since we have already seen an anemone, harmony. Harmony looks like the inklings/octolings, so it would make sense
im guessing you're referring to the art that was released in the developers interview (correct if wrong) but in that image im certain it wasn't an anemone. it's just an inkling
I'd believe that we could get Sharklings. I mean, we already have Shiver and Master Mega; as well as literal "Sharkling" _concept art_ in the Art Of Splatoon book. Other than that, Salmonlings would be really cool. Maybe they could start off as an easter egg during shift rotations and end up being a massive part of the story. I've already written so much lore and anatomy drawings for these two species that I'm practically on my knees begging for one of them to get added 😅
The most different cephalopod that hasn't been a ling is the Nautilus. So we could have some Nautilings. Imagine the little shells swimming around. And the hairstyles could change markings on their shell.
Lets be realistic. Jellyfishes, Snails/ Slugs, anemones and maybe shrimps. Nintendo would have to model every headgear for every (Hairstyle/Tentacelstyle?). We either would have to accept less gear or some races never beeing playable. But im pretty sure first one is more realistic. So in my opinion this 3 would be the most realistic ones in tearms of gameplay and game mechanics (Simular possible hair?, logical reason for a sub form and a connection to stuff simular to ink, the shrimp excluded). But it wouldnt be imposible to not see at least somthing like a Mantaraling in a storymode. Since we have confirmed clans near the playable region, this would explain why there isnt somthing like an nation of these higher evolved marinelife. Maybe there are some on thw other side of the world. And fishes? Probely most of them stayed like salmons or the "pat likes" of the shop ceepers. Maybe beccause there where just little number of Fishes, compared to squids and more, in alterna? Could be a possible reason.
Squids and Octos participate in Turf War because they produce their own ink from their bodies. You'd need a creature who can produce ink or some kind of fluid from their bodies.
I figured that #3 would be Anemonies, since look at harmony. She’s extremely similar to a regular inkling/octoling, and I could very well see her or something like her on the field. Heck, the hairstyles could give you different pet fish like anemonies have!
this might work because for the first couple of ideas for splatoon was rabbits, but then they decided to change it and the funny thing about the beta game was that your a tofu block shooting ink. the thing is, it might also not get put in as its.. well, it feels weird having sea creatures that dont normally shoot out ink swim in it and shoot it, but it also might look cool. dunno about nintendo adding it because it might be too hard to add in another species, let alone more. maybe in the next series but yeah.
I think Cuttlelings are going to be added next because we already have official art and lore of two cuttleling idols who inspired Callie and Marie to become famous singers, also they are cephalopods and produce ink fitting with the theme of "Cephalopod that can make ink and has tentacles" I keep hearing people say sharks, but we literally have a band member from splat 2 that is a shark, and that shark looks nothing like the inklings or octolings. also, sharks don't produce ink.
Man I really love all the art in this video! Props to the sharkling, shriplings, and mantaling artists. All of there art in particular are my favorite in this video
I feel like if Nintendo makes a Splatoon 4 they should make a class based system with the different “classes” be different species with different abilities, like crabs having shells and being more visible when swimming through ink but you have more health as an example.
Inklings are the base class, octolings have a special boost movement, cuttleans can peek out of, and are harder to see in ink, and Salmoning can move faster!
@@The_Artist_Official I think the inklings should also have their own special efect since they are the ones that started it Also to make it cool we could add fuzzy and sanitazed octolings
Sharklings would be super tanky due to the fin, so they can approach without drying. Starlings could stick to walls or ceilings. Snaillings could be slow but have armor in their shell but no attack, mantaling could have very short gliding capability from high hights, shrimplings could be very fast but a bit weaker, lobsters could be very strong and tank but slow and big, instead of fishlings, what if we played as salmonoids since they are a civilization and small fry shows not all of them are bad, and urchin could deal damage colliding hitboxes when they roll on land instead of swim. Their spikes would let them roll up walls or on ceilings.
To be honest i was hoping we would be able to play as Salmanoids, sounds crazy but they are also technically enemies who had allied with the protagonist kinda like with Marina except a more active role so i think it would be ok to fit in
I really believe salmonlings will become a real thing like, they're the only species besides ink and octos who can use ink and swim on it (maws and flipper flopper swim on ink) and in story mode theres one small fry who became good, i would love salmonlings fr
Here's a cool idea, how about Axolotls or Axolings? I know they aren't a sea creature/salt water creature, but it would be really neat to see fresh water marine animals, like Axolotls! I think it would be a fun and interesting idea!
I've always thought that the next species are going to be something like inklings, but they evolved from corals, the basis of my theory being that corals have different colors, it sounds silly, but it makes sense.
I don't think that we will get any new type of playable characters, but if we do, I feel like it would be a hybrid between inklings and octolings. I know that no hybrid between squids and octopuses exist in real life, but I think that it would make sense in Splatoon, and I feel like it would show how the octolings have integrated into the inkling society to the point that hybrids exist.
This also makes sense to me. There's a glitch that makes it possible to appear ss a hybrid and it gives you the enemy octoling octo if I'm correct. Then again, something more unique would be cool (if we get a new playable species).
If we don't get new 'lings, I at least want different types of Octos and squids, like umbrella octolings and vampire (squid) inklings. I do really want a sea bunny-ling though. Sea bunnies are my favorite sea creature so having them would be amazing. Oh! Also... Axolotlings!!! Omg I want themmmmm. My only problem with fishlings is the existence of salmonids. Why would other fish be humanoid but only salmons are still fish-like? The only explanation that I can come up with is that salmons somehow didn't get as many magic evolution chemicals as other species. The salmonids are still intelligent creatures, but aren't humanoid. Kinda like.. Idk. Ravens? Monkeys? Something like that. Back to the topic of Axolotlings, omg I am fangirling over that idea. Tbh, I just realized that getting new lings would kinda be impossible because.. Well, I don't think any other sea creatures secrete ink. Maybe the other creatures just.. Started using ink/octo technologies?? I'm thinking too much into this.
Ok here are some fanmade abilities: Jelly: after u splat them you get stunned for 3 secs. Sharks: they’re faster in ink Starlings: they basically get a boost for first and last 30 seconds of match. Snail: they can stick on walls in there ink. Shrimp: they can’t get hit at a certain height Fish: they basically have spidey senses (I didn’t have ability ideas for manta and urchin)
Imagine if the next species is basically a mammallian version of an existing species. To give loose specifics, something like the enemy octolings in sploon 3 story mode.
Tbh I kinda like the options we already have, if we add too many species, Splatoon might start to lose its identity, especially since if we start to add glowing ink, mucus or oil into the mix, multiplayer games might get messy. It’s weird to add random substitutes for ink, maybe if we got more lore on the other species, especially when Splatoon’s identity relies on Squids and octos, I don’t think new species should be added with every dlc, It would get boring if every dlc was octo expansion. I know it’s likely that the new dlc may be based on octo expansion’s story, but having more species would make it less squid-octo game we all know.
I think Salmonlings would make sense, since lore-wise Salmonoids are known to specifically breed certain salmonoids to become Boss Salmonoids, so it wouldn’t be far off if Salmonlings would be a thing
Meanwhile no mention of the most plausible species: Cuttlelings. There's actually a pair of cuttleling idols seen on a poster in the background of at least one octo expansion level
The problem is zipcaster. Since zipcaster uses a long tentacle to fly around, seeing a marine lifeform without that feature doing the same thing would be illogical. The solution to such a problem could be either by making another lifeform with arms like jellyfish or sea stars, or, if they make Splatoon 4, removing zipcaster in that game.
imagine if they added "challenge" species, for example, sharklings being more visible in ink because their fin pokes up, or sluglings being slower than other species
I actually had a dream once about a plot point beneath the city that inhabited inklings similar to that of vampire squids and firefly squids, being bioluminescent and having wings, split between two who specialized in either running or flying. Very low chance of them getting in, but still a cool vision!
Imagine a crabling kinda like the tank it would be more like a warrior defense species that have little crab forms going through the ink. The hairstyles are up to your imagination.
I honestly think the most likely option would be a salmon kid form. They could hint at them through maybe a new king salmon form introduced during a big run and they could work similarly to the octarians in the battle. The next best possiblity might be a mammalian kid just based off of the story mode 🤷🏼♂️ maybe they would be like a bear hybrid since bears can swim
It was kinda confirmed that it *will* be cuttlefish, to the left of the lobby, theres a train station enterance, you can see a cuttlefish symbol there.
Sea slug seems the most likely out of these due to their huge variety of colours and explorable designs for hair! Sure, they don't create ink but I'm sure some lore explanation with the Alterna crystals could sort that out. I mean, if a bear can use it to make an 'ink/ooze' to sort of infect the Octarians with then I'm sure most things could go
I think some form of manta would be the most likely because after we got an octoling idol in 2 the dlc gave us playable octolings and now we have a manta idol
We aren't going to talk about Sea Anemones? Seriously, Harmony looks like she could participate in turf war, and there was a sea anemone-like creature in some promotional art for lockers.
Where is this promotional art? I can't find it when I google search it. Also sea anemones wouldn't make sense because they aren't cephalopods and can't produce ink
Maybe splatoon 4's story is your inkling/octoling is exploring the world and running into these new species and doing turf wars against them and when you beet the final boss in a Island you unlock that species OMG I THINK I HAVE A IDEA FOR A NEW STORY MODE!!!
Ok surprised they didn't mention Salmonlings all through the first two games you battled the octarians, BAM octolings. Now it's samolnlings turn on the one hand they'd be good as protaganists if Mr. Grizz is in the DLC, but I could see smallfry keeping them out, or inspiring their hairstyles.
flow seems to suggest the sea slug species being closest to inkling/octolings, the more human face, tentacle-like hair, and even feet could mean sea slugs have similar forms to inkling/octolings. also considering characters like captain cuttlefish (who is an inkling) age can play into how a species looks, so personally i think flow was just an older “slug-ling” and that the species probably looks more like inklings and octolings.
Back when spatoon 2 first came out, i doddled eelings and raylings. They couldn't shoot ink but could spread or make ink harder cover or make enemy ink actually deadly
Going Off on the subject, i would like to see a dlc where you get to face sone land animals with more human like features to fight curious how they would work since they don't use ink, and any possible unique implications that could differ from O.R.C.A's testing systems or the sea slug's missions features maybe add a new weapon to use or switch up the way to heal?
i feel like the most likely species to be added would be salmonlings (since the current lore seems to be focusing on salmonids), nautilings or hare/sluglings (since they also have ink), or anemones (since there are already anthropomorphic anemone npcs).
Ok, hear me out, this is a little weird but in the final boss Mr. Grizz actually uses ink, and the story mode was called the Return of the mammalians what if Mr. Grizz did some genetic experimentation stuff to create the next best thing cublings. Their hair would look like the hair in the ooze and not only would this make for interesting story DLC, where you reject him and live with the inklings. But wouldn't it be cool if Mr. Grizz's lines were altered to sound more friendly when you're a cubling because of his obvious bias.
If we were to get a third playable species, I would definitely hope it'd be the sea slugs. Reason being is because the only animal aside from cephalopods that produce ink are a type of sea slug called "Sea Hares", which is why they were used in that concept art!
My money's on Sharklings. Also, if there's any species to add a gimmick with, it's them. Imagine if they had the ability to lunge out of their ink to deal damage to anyone they touch, but had that fin giving them away and could easily take damage while swimming.
@@michaeleanthonyjr This is all for the sake of fun. What point is there in shooting down harmless ideas for a third playable species in a game about spreading your team's color all over a stage? I went into this comment section for about the same reason everyone else did: to talk about a species I'd like to see get a playable role, and in my case even bring up a cool little idea for a gimmick. If you want to shoot me down for joining the crowd and then going the extra step forward, you might as well bomb the whole comment section. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go bugger off and try to enjoy my evening.
This would be so cool! I actually had an idea for an antagonistic force for another game: The Crew of the Preastor's Feast, pirate lings that have predatory forms. There would be the Ship's cartographer Gloria, an angler fish, quartermaster Leo, a leopard seal, boatswain Sim the sharp, a barracuda, First Mate Opal, an orca, and Captain Sharktook, obviously a great white shark. I also imagine their underlings to be Piravenous, similar to the salmonids but obviously piranhas, though they're be lower like salmonids or octarians
I actually feel like the mantalings and urchinlings would be the most likely option out of all of the ones in he video. Urchinlings because of the reasons discussed in the video - mainly because of Spyke and Murch - and the Mantalings because it’s could be like a similar situation to Splatoon 2. In Splatoon 2 Marina was added as the first non-squid idol, and we were able to play as octolings by playing the octo expansion. Now, big man is not only an idol, but a boss. Plus, we have seen him swim in the ink like an inkling, albeit there he was making clones of himself. So, in all honesty, I think that Mantalings are actually not too unlikely to come to Splatoon 3, if any species is being added at all. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
I always thought sea anemone would come to the game since we already have Annie and Harmony who seem very chill but instead of a small fry buddy we get different species of clown fish
The more cooler choices for a tertiary species to be playable would be cuttlings or nautilings, but you know what they say, good things come to those who wait
I think that the next species would probably be either a Salmonling or a sea bunny or hare. Those two things are cephalopods that deal with ink. Plus, they'd be a good reference to a prototype design for Inklings.
I feel like there's a huge chance for Sharklings, Salmondlings/Fishlings or Manta Raylings to be a thing. I'm happy with whatever we get but looking at the story and characters, those 3 pop up in my head
Ok anemones are def gonna be the next species, they even released official art featuring a anemone hanging out with the inklings and octolings like normal!
@@Palikawii no, the eyes are styled completely differently than both the inklings and octolings, and the only other character in the entire series that has those eyes is Harmony, which is an anemone. I know that Nintendo would not give a character eyes so similar to another character for no reason
@@michaeleanthonyjr there is no written rule that it has to be a cephalopod, as there are many different types of sea creatures throughout all of Splatoon. Also, the swim form wouldn’t be that strange because it anemones have tentacles (yes they are actually called tentacles)
For sure they are gonna add a new species in the dlc specially with like... The "Three" theme by making everything be... Three lol The thing is... What species? I hope we see the slugs or Jellyfish, they just sound so interesting!
as much as these are good ideas and great things to see in splatoon. we have to remember that squids and octopuses are both two of the only ink sea base creatures that shoot ink (that I know of.) that's the main point of splatoon and why inklings and octolings are the two main species. as for these ideas, most of these species' ideas don't really have anything to do with ink and that's why I don't think we would be seeing any of these creatures turning into playable characters for that reason alone. but that's only my opinion. I love all the art and the really unique ideas.
I feel like they're leaning toward either a Sharkling or an Eeling. It's already hinted at in the story mode that Shiver and Frye are a shark and eel respectively, I don't think that Nintendo would drop ready-made designs like that and do nothing with them
I'm begging for them to make the new species sea anemone. There's a lot of posibilities with the hairstyles and we've already seen some humanoid anemone, like Harmony.
Don't say how they are going to act because it's up to the people too choose how their character acts. Also don't forgot about salmonoids. other than that great video, and I always appreciate someone showing others art/ocs in this community.
@@michaeleanthonyjr I just find it suspicious how harmony is so humanoid. More humanoid than any of the other species besides the inklings and octolings. And then bringing harmony into the game kinda feels like them bringing marina into splat 2. Plus splatoon is creative and doesn’t really care about biology that much.
@@OnceAnOcto I believe that if they didn't care about biology that much, then they wouldn't have replaced the original rabbit characters with Squids. There's very obviously a theme within the designs of things within the setting and a part of that theme is that the things that you play as are aquatic cephalopods that have the innate ability to produce ink. I think it would be cool to play as an anemone, but it doesn't seem reasonable to assume that they would do that given that it doesn't line up with the theme.
It would be funny if the third playable species was an actual cuttlefish but instead of looking like the Inklings and Octolings, they look like small Cthulus and they communicate using psychic powers
And fun fact, cuttlefish humanoids are canon thanks to octo expansion where we can find old magazines about 2 cuttlefish idols
Best idea
Do they know?
*Splatters Inferior Cephalopod with Mind*
@@felixfire6583 splatoon 4 might be a prequel to splatoon 1 with 2 cuttlefish idols
Sea Hares like the ones the Harlings are based off (the ones he called sluglings) do produce ink which would definitely work
i mean i think all species can use ink bcs in one of the splatoon interviews we actually get to know that some of the bands drummers (who aren't octolings or inklings) actually play turf wars and have a competitive team
Hot take: but I think we need more customization options for both Inklings and Octolings before we get a third “ling” species. The octolings need their own versions of the inkling hairstyles and inklings should have their own variations on the ones that are exclusive to the octolings.
At the very least the octolings should have an equal amount of hairstyles as the inklings.
TwT
@@Styla_Mythic same!!
Yeahh
They aren't slaves, they are biological constructs used from cut off flesh aka a biological android
Actually its semms that octoling from the splatlands like to use octotroopers to make simple task or to play around as we can see on sunken scroll 5
True… apart from the very few who would likely feel so isolated they would “make friends” this way.
Since when were they ‘forced’ lol
Imagine if they add cuttlefish and you can customize the eye color more like the pupil shape like how Callie and Marie r cuttlefish and have gold star eyes

Bisk from splatoon 2… he’s from the shoe shop.
I'd imagine if we actually did get another, it would be another cephalopod. Or another creature that can produce a substance that's similar to ink, or maybe even a think mucus.
They could've done something with nautiluses but I doubt they'll be playable after seeing Gnarly Eddy. Still holding out for Vampire Squids though.
Parrotfish?
I'm absolutely certain that it needs to be a cephalopod because that's a huge part of the theme of the setting. Octolings were only added because they are intuitively associated with Inklings, cuttlefish or nautilus would be the only viable candidates. And the furthest stretch that I think would be something like a sea slug, since they are also mollusks and some species can produce ink
Mantalings, it’s obvious
sea hares are sea slugs that produce ink!
I always thought the next species would be Vampire Octolings, because vampire octopuses are separate from regular octopi due to their webbed tentacles. Furthermore, since all other cephalopods exist in game (Squids, Octopi, Cuttlefish, and Nautiluses) it would make sense
well, i'd personally have to disagree because if you check the hairstyle used for the main octoling in the splat3 promo (with the gal), the tentacles are webbed in the back
there's a lot of theories that Frye is a vampire squid given many aspects of her design
It’s shiver

Either samonlings or rabbits from the moon to reference both the concept of the first game and Japanese mythology which Nintendo loves to reference.

I just hope we either get A. Sub-species of Inklings and octolings that have different traits like Frye (who’s most likely and Vampire Squid), or B. Just makes those traits part of the customization options. What I mean is that now we have an ear, eye shape, tooth, height, and yes, a forehead option/toggle.
thats a cool idea!! having different subspecies of cephalos omg!!! i love your idea!!!
Height would make battles a little more unfair though considering taller creatures would be hit more easily from over cover
I feel like at the moment with the story, the most likely new species to come would be salmonlings. They'd be like a more mutated salmonid, since fish tend to adapt to their surroundings in real life, and salmonid usually get attacked when they migrate.
And they’re already fighting with ink-like weapons
I agree we're getting more and more info about them though the return of the mamalians, big runs and stages. They know what they're doing
that really cant happen because salmnid swim zone are no where near alterna
I'd say they were probably bored.

well there is actually a sea slug species! mostly sea hares shoots ink

Imagine if the fuzzy ooze mixes with the crystal that made inklings and octarians and makes like a goo-human from the psychic imprint so they take the form of humans but they're ink like a Mudmouth or Goop from Ben 10. Imagine what a jeweled squid inkling could look like. They could have lights running across their bodies and be from the Deep Sea Metro.

I've already written so much lore and anatomy drawings for these two species that I'm practically on my knees begging for one of them to get added 😅
I predict that the dlc story will involve more of a important story that involves little jud and won’t be to important to a new species
I would love some inkling varients like a Vampire squid Inkling with fangs and tentacle piercings to mimic the Vampire squid's spikes for example

I think Cuttlelings are going to be added next because we already have official art and lore of two cuttleling idols who inspired Callie and Marie to become famous singers, also they are cephalopods and produce ink fitting with the theme of "Cephalopod that can make ink and has tentacles"

I feel like if Nintendo makes a Splatoon 4 they should make a class based system with the different “classes” be different species with different abilities, like crabs having shells and being more visible when swimming through ink but you have more health as an example.

My two Hope's for the dlc are agent 4 and or 8 being a part of the story and a new playable race(probably a cuttlefish)
Salmonlings is what we shall play. And it would be great if Agent 3's Smallfry would evolve into a Salmonling, and we play him too.
I mean, if a bear can use it to make an 'ink/ooze' to sort of infect the Octarians with then I'm sure most things could go
They do it's just very acidic
Tbh, I realy would like to see either a Salmon, jellyfish, tropical fish or a shark species...
The only problem I see with this is these species don't actually produce ink like real life squid and octopus do
Then again, there's Salmon Run, and salmons dont produce ink
@@DrizzyB the enemy ink in salmon run isn't technically ink it's sludge from the sea that the game makes function as ink for simplistic sake
flow seems to suggest the sea slug species being closest to inkling/octolings, the more human face, tentacle-like hair, and even feet could mean sea slugs have similar forms to inkling/octolings. also considering characters like captain cuttlefish (who is an inkling) age can play into how a species looks, so personally i think flow was just an older “slug-ling” and that the species probably looks more like inklings and octolings.
I was hoping for Inktolings. Inkling/octoling hybrids. 🦑🐙
But Salmonlings would be really cool too! 🐟
Yes I thought of Inktolings
what would inktolings look like?
I think the Starlings would be very cute. That would be a good idea. So would the Salmonlings
They are also mollusks, which is a group that encapsulates slugs, squids, and octopuses. Also clams...
@@michaeleanthonyjr cant wait for "Splatoon 5: Clamling Expansion"
Mantalings
Aloxolings in squid form they are little axolotl and have like hair with 6 rentacles on sides and 1 tail on the end
My money's on Sharklings. Also, if there's any species to add a gimmick with, it's them. Imagine if they had the ability to lunge out of their ink to deal damage to anyone they touch, but had that fin giving them away and could easily take damage while swimming.
Sharks don't ink
@@michaeleanthonyjr Neither do the majority of the specieses that people are throwing around as a possible third species.
@@emberthefox4951 Yeah, which is why none of them are viable candidates either
@@michaeleanthonyjr This is all for the sake of fun. What point is there in shooting down harmless ideas for a third playable species in a game about spreading your team's color all over a stage? I went into this comment section for about the same reason everyone else did: to talk about a species I'd like to see get a playable role, and in my case even bring up a cool little idea for a gimmick. If you want to shoot me down for joining the crowd and then going the extra step forward, you might as well bomb the whole comment section. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go bugger off and try to enjoy my evening.
But there is already a shark in splatoon 2 but ig
I always loved the idea of salmonid kids! These are all really freaking cool tho!
Now I want Slings in Splatoon 3. Slugs are known for producing mucus (Ink) so it would fit.
I always thought sea anemone would come to the game since we already have Annie and Harmony who seem very chill but instead of a small fry buddy we get different species of clown fish
Cool idea - Pufflings! Pufferfish species! Lotsa potential there
Sticking with the cephalopod theme, I’ve been wanting cuttlelings ever since octolings became playable. Mostly because “cuddling” just sounds so cute!
I would like to see Salmonlings as playable characters
They all sound pretty cool but the only one I see working is a starfish and maybe a jellyfish.
I feel like there's a huge chance for Sharklings, Salmondlings/Fishlings or Manta Raylings to be a thing. I'm happy with whatever we get but looking at the story and characters, those 3 pop up in my head
With the urchinlings, i can imagine the pokemon pincurchin swimming.
Ok anemones are def gonna be the next species, they even released official art featuring a anemone hanging out with the inklings and octolings like normal!
It was actually just an inkling with a cool hairstyle we haven’t seen yet
@@Palikawii no, the eyes are styled completely differently than both the inklings and octolings, and the only other character in the entire series that has those eyes is Harmony, which is an anemone. I know that Nintendo would not give a character eyes so similar to another character for no reason
Where can I find this
Anemones aren't cephalopods and can't produce ink. What would its submerge form even look like?
@@michaeleanthonyjr there is no written rule that it has to be a cephalopod, as there are many different types of sea creatures throughout all of Splatoon. Also, the swim form wouldn’t be that strange because it anemones have tentacles (yes they are actually called tentacles)
We already have Big Man we don’t need anymore mantarays when we already have the best one
For sure they are gonna add a new species in the dlc specially with like... The "Three" theme by making everything be... Three lol
The thing is...
It's already hinted at in the story mode that Shiver and Frye are a shark and eel respectively, I don't think that Nintendo would drop ready-made designs like that and do nothing with them
WAIT, SALMONLINGS it would make sense since mr grizz is apart of the storyline now
(salmonlings? samidlings? salmlings? idk)
I think if we get any now species it will be anemones. There was a reason they brought Harmony back. I can feel it
Anemones can't produce ink and aren't cephalopods
@@michaeleanthonyjr idc I wanna play as an anemone.
@@michaeleanthonyjr I can dream ok
