EDIT: thanks for all the kind words! for reference, despite how i may sound i am not a girl, so if you're going to refer to me in third person, please use they/them pronouns. thank you!
EDIT (again): SPLATOON 3! Also damn this is blowing up
I don't think there will be iceberg-worthy material for the new game until a while after it comes out. If I added splatoon 3 theories now, THAT would age poorly. just sayin.

Settling what the Gen in Gen 83 is short for! (20:56) A few people suggested "General" which makes sense in a military context, but I ruled this out because the messages talk about her being in training to be a combat engineer. For some reason I never thought to check what Gen 83 is in Japanese, and it's 第83期. 期 means a period of time, so yes, generation. Still cryptic as hell though!
I know Pearl is 21. I translated chunks of the second artbook too. I deliberately left her out for the sake of showing more obscure examples. Also when I've seen people question adult inklings, they generally mean ones who are old enough to be the parents of the playable Inklings.

Yeah I also never understood that. This professor sounded really smart. I mean he made a capsule for a animal to survive 10,000 years and a serum to let the animal live forever. Why tf did he not apply that to humans? I mean, there’s also the possibility humans are still alive somewhere.
I'd guess it could be that the serum only protects from aging and dying to heart failure, rather than actually making someone get a steel body. So some world wars ending all humanity could be reasonable...

@@TrashSpace69 I hate how hard the octo expansion is. Its definitely darksouls-like. Most of the time I just let Off The Hook beat it for me.
@@lulzalfest ... There is nothing “Dark Souls” about Octo Expansion. Either you constantly refuse to learn how challenges in the Octo Expansion work just to make yourself the victim, or you have never touched a video game your entire life until today. Saying that a game or a DLC is the “dark souls” of something without giving any reasoning outside of “it’s hard for me” is just bullshit. Think about how you’re actually playing the damn game before you call something difficult, and never call any game outside of the Dark Souls series as a “Dark Souls-like” ever again. At this point, the term is just a media buzzword and doesn’t even mean anything outside of “boohoo this game is too hard for us dumb game journalists”

From the sounds of it, you have neither.

It's good to see that someone gets that Splatoon isn't just "squids play turf wars together" and other nonsense. I love Splatoons lore and I also think it's cool that you have the Haikara Walker and can translate it so that others can get more of Splatoons lore.
I think a good point to add is that a lot of the sunken scrolls were made by the octarians. For example the biology of the inkling. It was from an octarians stand point, stating that the inklings are predatory and simple minded. Yet that doesn't seem to be given that they live in a really diverse world and society. But splatoon is indeed one of my top favorite games because of all the hidden lore. The developers did an amazing job of keep the secret buried just under the surface so those that want more lore to the game can find it.
this was an interesting iceburg

It's... You
lol i was about to send u this
@@munnybunnyummy4332 lol
Hey, uhh, you dude how are you didn’t know you liked Splatoon, whoever you are.
God damn, the developers did NOT need to go that in depth with world building. They could have just been like “hehe funny squid game” and nobody would bat an eye.
I think it was more of a “we can’t help it” situation. Once an idea takes over, it often means the creators saw that design and the lore was literally inspired from that. I definitely know how that feels.
Yeah maybe. But it's always more fun to find out/write about lore
It's pretty similar to their game design philosophy, isn't it? Simple on the surface, deep on the inside....
9:16 In a lore video I watched about Splatoon... gosh, years ago(man, that makes me feel old)- they mentioned that the odd 'screams' and clanking sounds similar to the blender we see in the octo expansion. Which is almost just as eerie because that implies that *something* has been blended in those blenders previously- or maybe *someone*
Uh yeah. We see six full blenders of Tartar's primordial ooze on the NILS cannon.
I mean, they certainly have. The sanitized octarians are reconstituted goop of the previous agents who completed their trials
Tartar literally mentions that there have been 10,007 subjects to 8
I noticed something recently about Tartar! I saw that when we fight the NILS Statue, on the big sanitized ink jug in the statue's mouth, there is a window where you can see the sanitized ink and what, too me at least, looks like an eye floating around in there. This could be a reference to the terrifying beta design of Tartar and his eyes floating around in the blender. I'm not completely sure it's an eye, but look for yourself if you think I might be wrong!
last time i looked, i saw a sanatized octoball in there
The "splatoon is a post apocalyptic shooter" point now is even clearer because of splatoon 3

Holy shit the amount of lore that starts connecting dots with Splatoon 3 is insane. I swear, the plot to splatoon 3 was in our faces this whole time
I like how the implications behind Nishida coming from a family with 247 children are so incredibly concerning that it was included as the second last iceberg detail.
But I feel it will most likely get passed off as "funny detail" and never get elaborated on in-game if much more.
8:34 This Easter Egg goes deeper actually. The laugh clips used for the statues are the exact same ones heard when you defeat Koloktos in Skyward Sword. Coincidentally, Koloktos is a possessed statue...
Maybe it’s nothing more than a reference?
@@theparrishshow9803 you’re no fun 😠
@@Empy_C.
It was just a suggestion
@@theparrishshow9803 I think it’d be interesting if it happened to be the ghost of a human, and the statue was made by said human (maybe as a way to insert the creator into his own world like a lot of developers do)
You know, it does sound similar because of the pitch but I don’t think it is the same laugh. The one from ss is longer, but I couldn’t recognize the same pattern from splatoon in the ss one. The splatoon one also sounds more like a pitched up inkling laugh specifically, while the ss one sounds like a pitched up normal little kid laugh. Inklings have that kind of distinctive sound to them that I can’t explain
I loved all of this!!!
Also, an addition to iceberg. The ink the sanitized octolings and tartar use is not ink at all! It's actually BLOOD. This is bc octopie don't have hemoglobin in there blood but a copper rich hymogeycen that makes there blood a blue color....
I noticed that too, that the blue colour is octoling blood
"Aha! You can hide but you can't run! I will splat you with my OWN BLOOD.
AND MISERABLY FAIL...."
Dang, i know Octo expansion is dark, but not THIS dark...
@Herrick Family they blend it but we don't see the blend process. But we DID see they spread blood everywhere. I think it's cool if someone has a mod that change the color of tartar's ink to red

Ikr, I can’t believe Inkopolis used to be a ghetto 😂
Yes omg why is everyone overlooking that.
Regarding Marie's pet, I once read in tumblr they were evolved clams.. Oysters? It even had a little diagram of said creatures evolving and flying out of the shell! Unfortunately, I've been searching and I can't find anything abt it anymore, so take it with a grain of salt
MAN id love to see that post! I saw one of my friends suggest something like that too, and that kinda does make sense with how it's body looks a lot like scallop meat! Though there's a guy in the band bottom feeders who's also a scallop so maybe there's some crazy divergent evolution happening lol
@@rassicas yeah perhaps! We know how wacky evolution in splatoon can get.. These are way broader loose examples, but, some fish being more humanoid than others (salmonids being That One Radioactive Monkey scene in the simpsons lmao) and we do see normal algae and then just.. The Bottom Feeders guy being sentient! Or the implication of plain normal not sentient sea life still existing! This is all speculation rambling but yeah for me the idea wouldn't be that out of the picture!
I've heard suggestions that it's sentient tofu? A few of my friends have said something about it being a tribute to the time when splatoon was just tofu blocks. At least, I believe I've heard of that.
@@junebug6685 I was gonna say I don't know how likely that is, but then I remembered that sentient seaweed exists in splatoon so. God, who knows
COMING BACK TO THIS apparently the name of the silver-lipped pearl oyster in japanese translates to "butterfly shellfish" so there's another (possible) piece of evidence to it being an oyster or something!
I find Marina's full name interesting. Marina translates to 'Harbour' whilst Ida translates to 'Gone'. Could this imply some secret meaning? Perhaps 'harbour gone' could mean something similar like 'boats have left' or something. I'm looking into this too much but just putting my theory out there.

To play devil's advocate to the "inklings have no bones" part...that scroll is likely an Octarian propaganda piece, with how "terrifying" the rest of their biology is described.
Callie and Marie talk about their lack of bones as well in a splat 1 newscast
The idols have heights of around 5 feet, you can see the opponent's team squidpartying from all the way across Walleye Warehouse, multiple NPCs comment on squids having no bones, and even with the sheer amount of ink an Inkling puts out just by chilling in squid form, you'd NEED that high of a capacity to fill the ink tank that quick! It's kinda like a documentary about lions- no matter how tense the music and slow-mo shots are, the fact remains that they will absolutely body everything they see.
@@applechoco483 its actually a possibility that inklings could be smaller than five feet, there's evidence on it and theres a video ive seen that gives an explanation on their height and how inklings could either be 1 inch or 1-2 feet aswell

I didn’t know a lot in this video, but what really surprised me was that Agent 3 became a DJ??? I hope we get some of their music in Splatoon 3!

That might replace Turquoise October, I think it would be quite cool if that happened
@𝕆ctophones 🦑 Actually its confirmed It's music from a DJ called Dedf1sh! Although that would have been cool!
Splatoon 3 is here and she's not a DJ.
The cannibalism one reminds me of zora from zelda eating fish, but now that i think about it it's probably just because it's easier for them to catch fish than, like, shoot a bird. I think it's the same for inklings.
Yeah, Jabu Jabu ._. In real life fish eat other fish so it's fine, I think
Rito eat poultry too.
better to eat fish than birds I think not just for convenience but what about the rito
I mean, fish eat other fish all the time
9:57 the fact that they scrapped these is literally a violation to splatoon fans, I would die for the far right octoling boy haircut, the fact that the tentacles cover the eyes is freaking adorable
looking back on this video after playing through Splatoon 3, its surprising how accurate the Ark Polaris / Bear sign correlation is. same with the correlation between the bear sign and Mr Grizz. seeing how bits in the pervious Splatoon games all tied together and foreshadowed the events and lore revealed in 3 is astounding. so much thought was put into these games, even down to the tiny details that would normally be overlooked. same with the SOS messages and the fax machine, however the fax machine might be a bit of a stretch. the “Save our Salmon” message shows what the effects of collecting the golden eggs would be in the third game, and it’s possible the Fax Machine messages might be from tests of sending things into space with the Alterna rocket, however i’m not 100% sure.

A dark theory for the screams is that it's the sounds of the deep sea metro. You can hear the sounds of trains and the screams are most likely octolings going through the metro.
It's not all Octolings, though. We know for a fact that Iso Padre was one of the test subjects, and there were probably a variety of other species as well.
32:00 "as long as hes not a bear ill be happy" ...
9:12 The Boss battle screams are actually supposed to be a train, This is confirmed by one of the devs who realized when play testing cause they have a train by there apartment so of course they would recognize it.

That'd be hilarious. Here we are thinking he's this big intimidating creature of mysterious origin and suddenly... Boom. Tiny baby chunky man
I was just thinking the same!! Imagine a water bear that evolved or something like that and he reveals himself in the third game
As long as you draw a circle you're safe tho...
Tardigrades are also known as water bears so it could be a thing but they’d be really tiny
I absolutey adore games with deep and dark lore. Here are some of my theories on some things
The noises you hear near boss fights are either;
1. The train
2. The heartbreaking screams of the octolings who we're blended.
3. More octolings who are also going through the stages screaming for help, or bosses screaming I defeat.
21:02 I assume gen 83 means general 83, considering how smart and gifted Marina was, it isn’t too strange to imagine she could’ve became a general :)
GET READY TO UPDATE THE ICEBERG, WE GOT SPLATOON 3 NEXT YEAR
i figured clown fish were like parrots. smart and can talk but limited in what they say. it would explain how theyre symbiotic and usually say very little.
I thought about the parrot concept too, as it would be less of a headache if these small species were not sentient! but they have separate personalities and use language in a way the bigger species they've latched on to wouldn't say. Craymond, while not a clownfish but is still another tiny sea creature who doesnt talk a lot, came to Flow on his own accord because she was very lost on a trip and he wanted to help her get around. all this makes me lean towards them being sentient intelligent creatures, smarter than a parrot. would be nice to get some official clarification on this because its. weird.
Her: Ihope mr/Grizz isn't a bear...
Me: Yeah about that-
they use they/them pronouns :)
@@greypjuiced sorry I’ll change it
For my senior English class, I wrote an essay about salmonids.
It was more about how each boss salmonid's abilities relate to real life salmon, such as the Maw possibly usong electromagnetism to "see" what's above ground while they travel below.
I also did an essay talking about the morals of salmon run, and Mr. Grizz's true intentions being illegally modified weapons, but I forgot to turn that one in so I'll never know what grade I would have gotten.
Who knew a game about painting has this much deep and dark lore
"Painting"
Nintendo are good at that kind of thing.
you know, with actual in-depth splatoon lore being so rare and with so much official content "hidden" behind the language barrier, I thought I'd become very knowledgeable about it, so seeing so much stuff in this iceberg that I couldn't recognize was a magnificent surprise- and you unironically translated the haikara walker?! I thought I would have to wait around a year or two for an official localization, holy moly! I will definetely check that out, I've been dying to get my hands on that book since it was announced! was about time my youtube recommendations ACTUALLY catered to me :} this was an amazing video and I'm looking forward to watch the rest of your stuff once I have the time! Thank you for your effort and content, as a splatoon fan who lost hope in the fandom, your channel is great news!
I love the amount of detail put into Splatoon as a whole. The fact that we get the names of bands and their members behind music in the game, the times and dates of less important events, god we even get an explanation to where ink goes after a battle. It all makes for a world you want to learn more about and find things in. A game universe you want to be immersed in, even if it's a universe where you can't get milk.
This is an incredible compilation of interesting Splatoon lore! As someone relatively new to the games, I found it quite informative!
I care less about whether Mr Grizz is an actual bear and more about who’s behind the Salmon Run operation... i want splatoon 3 sooo bad, but I pray the mode returns because it’s my favorite! I wouldn’t have sunk nearly 1000 hours into it if it wasn’t for Salmon Run tbh
Boy do I have some news for you >:)
@@junecrocker do you think Salmon Run will return though, that little fishy pet was awfully cute... I’ll feel bad about killing his fishy friends
@@joeyjose727 I dont think it’ll return because the plot is probably going to revolve around helping the salmonids :(
@@junecrocker I don’t think that either because of the save our salmons thing
This aged well
something not mentioned about was in splatoon 2, where there’s a shaking sea snail next to murch, and on the other side of murch, a box full of empty sea snail shells, suggesting that murch eats sea snails. (Or maybe I just missed that lol)
He.. h-he does.. sea urchins eat sea snails.
There's also a screwdriver next to him, so he probably pries them out
9:21 I know it's been about a year since this video was posted but I just wanted to let you know that some people are theorizing that these screams & scary noises are octolings being blended by tartar after completing everything, and I believe the train noises are octolings escaping or just quiting. Again I'm not sure if this is true because I have no confirmation and I have not played octolings expansion in splatoon 2.
Edit: when you were talking about the thousands of dead test subjects (26:47) this is technically what I’m talking about. The screams in the boss arenas are screams coming from these test subjects. There was probably a lot more that went into these deaths that we don’t know but the fact that the screams in the first game seem to be connected to the second seems super cool to me
I love seeing people react to the Splatoon lore, it's always a rollercoaster lmao
I have a theory wich would explain the cars being on both sides. When you enter a battle you just get sent to a random battle in a random country. I got this idea when i looked at that you cant see anything resembling an stage around inkopolis but in just a few seconds you just appear in a battle.
the stages in Splatoon 1 and 2 are in the same city/region. This is canon.
Oh ok
sad...

for the "Save Our Salmon" thing I think this could relate to the new Splatoon 3 trailor and how everything is a deserted wasteland. We seem to be able to have a salmonid pet in the game so perhaps they will have more lore tied in with the main game and story mode. Maybe we saw the salmonid's message and took them along with us through this wasteland
Bro just predicted splatoon 3
31:44
Well, this entire section took on a new light given the events of the Splatoon 3 story
me: never played splatoon before
also me: watches 40 minutes of splatoon lore. *interesting*
It's a really fun game... casual, ranked It's extremly frustrating
You should get it
Whelp... now the iceberg is gonna go deeper
Yep!
yeah
25:19 How were you so close to what actually happened - this is amazing
Pleased to hear that I know most of this! I feel like the thousands of killed test subjects would be near the top, though, because one could infer that in order to get all that primordial ooze, Tartar would have to kill A LOT of subjects...
me before the video: well i probably know most of this
me after:
apparently I've been living in ignorance all this time
Just thought I should mention, San gō (ごう) literally means “Number 3”, so DJ SANGO’s name has got to be a reference to their role as Agent 3
So, the Book of Madai. That likely translates to "When the seven continents of humanity go up in smoke (as the water levels rise), the pink fish will surface and devour all land life."
This refers to the land mammals going extinct. The first beings to evolve into the Mollusk Era were Salmon. And when climate change did its job and raised the water levels to the point where humans couldn't survive, the evolved salmonids took to the land and devoured humans and other mammals in a violent feeding frenzy.
And I know this because I've seen the perspective. Ever been mobbed by Chum in Salmon Run? It's terrifying.
Honestly mad props to you for having the skill and actually doing some translation work and putting it out there in order to make more things about this game known.
Splatoon lore really makes you wonder, and should there ever be a 3rd game (I know there might not be) I hope at least some things get answered
Splatoon 2 sold nearly 12 million copies, there *gotta* be another game coming, even if it's gonna be a while. still yeah, no guarantees everything is gonna be answered
Just pray that we dont have a mother or pikmin situation on our hands and that the direct tomorrow has splatoon news
HELL YEA BABY
boy are you in luck for the news today
We're from the future to tell you good news
Polaris is a star in the constellation Ursa Minor, or little dipper.
Ursa Minor is latin for Little Bear.
Coincidence I think not
hol up
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
31:02 So Mr Grizz is a bear. Were you disappointed?
this is certainly interesting to see after playing 3, specially some of the details behind maps i wasn't aware that are... straight up part of the logs
