    I like to think that the hair can melt with a hairdryer, similar to jello or plastic in a way. This could explain the afro hairstyle as it's all the tentacles melted together, as well as the "Spikey" hair where cut bits are held by drying to to keep shape. Also this could give a fun idea where someone with some ink on their head can use pieces of other people's hair and fuse them together.

    My head cannon:
    Inkling hair is strange.
    By cutting it normally, it initially looks like the "bangs" haircut for Inkling Girls, and eventually heals up to become the end of a tentacle.
    For the bangs haircut, they have to keep on cutting it every...I'd say every two ish weeks.
    It does not hurt when an Inkling gets a hair cut.
    All Octolings start out with smaller hair like the Inklings, before getting puffy-er hair when they're older, at around 17-18 (actually canon)
    Inklings have blow-dryers and combs, as we can see examples of these in the manga and I think Octo Expansion?
    Inkling hair can get tangled or fuzzy, as we see something similar to this in the manga with gloves during the third hero arc.
    You can actually run your hand or whole arm through Inkling and Octoling hair, given it's almost completely ink. We see Inklings and Octolings run their arms through their hair a lot in the square, as well as in the Splatoon 3 trailers.
    Adding on to that last point a bit, it seems like if Inkling hair is in a hot climate for too long, it "melts", and makes it more floppy and easier to run your hand through. Again, we see this a lot in the Splatoon 3 trailers.
    Inkling hair is strange.
    Also go check out John Sandwich's "Good Hair Day" Splatoon animation for how he sees Inkling hair and what would happen if an Inkling cut her hair.

      Where did you find info about how octoling hair gets poofier? I wanna read it too 0:

    • @axolotlgab
      @axolotlgab 2 года назад +34

      @@Lynk56 I don't remember exactly where I heard it, but during the time Octo Expansion was first announced, people were wondering why Agent 8 looked different than the Rival Octolings we usually see. It was later revealed that this was because Agent 8 is younger than Rival Octolings (8 is 14, Rivals are 17-18). This also applies to why Agent 8's eyes look more square-like rather than that oval-like eyes that Rivals have. I could get more into how I think Octoling eyes work as they age, comment if you'd like to hear about that. But anyway, we see that this "hair getting bigger as you age" rule is also applied to Marina and Warabi (the male DJ in the duo band "Diss-Pair", similar age to Marina), as we see that their hair is bigger than player Octolings and more akin to the Rival Octolings in story mode. This rule could also possibly be applied to Inklings as they age. We see that Pearl has a similar hairstyle to the short cut hairstyle we got in Splatoon 2, but bigger and more stylized (I should mention Pearl is also 21 years old). It's harder to pinpoint with the Squid Sisters, as it seems like they both have similar sized hair to regular Inklings, and they are both around 19 by the time of Splatoon 2. However, this could be explained due to the bow hairstyles they both have. This hairstyle could leave them with smaller looking hair if it's all pulled back into a bow all the time. Also, if you take into account the hair that makes up their bows, they both have extremely long hair, Callie especially. This could be apart of it, because if the hair gets bigger, it gets longer too. This can also be seen in Marina's hair too. Most Rival Octolings have their hair curled up, but if you see a Rival with their hair uncurled (my source was from source film maker), it is a lot longer. Marina's hair is also about that same length, because she keeps her hair uncurled. But I've been rambling too long, so in conclusion, both Octoling and Inkling hair gets bigger and longer as they grow up, their hair can shrink a bit if they keep it tied up too long, and playable Inklings and Octolings aren't old enough to get this kind of hair yet.

    My head canon: it’s ink, it has the same inky texture as the squid/octo forms and as actual ink. I believe they just reshape the ink hair into different styles, similar to how they can transform into squids/octos. I like this because it makes the fact that they can change hairstyles whenever feel more intentional rather then it being there for ease of game mechanics

    going back to the topic of whether or not inkling/octoling hair has a mind of its own, we see marina’s hair constantly wiggle and flail about in her news animations. it’s like it’s almost doing it out of her control.

  • @gwan1714
    @gwan1714 2 года назад +48

    My head canon is that the inklings can hold themselves in the like totally inky body (like the mid transformation stage between squid and human) and in this state their whole body is inky and like malleable and then they can grab the tentacles and style it how they want, pulling/cutting chunks of inky tentacle off or pulling/stretching it out if they want it short or long etc and then when they go fully back into human form it sets as their proper head tentacles. Ive had this head canon since splat2 was accounced since on the box art of splatoon 1 it says _fight in 3 different forms_ and has the in between as its own form and I took that as yes they can hold that form they just dont in turf wars etc cuz well in game they’re obvs playing a fast pace game so they wouldn’t need to have that form in-game but it is possible like at home and in everyday life etc (also they can only change their hair in this state as it will bleed in the humanoid state since they’re actual tentacles)
    TL:DR They can mould their tentacles in the state between humanoid and squid form (that just slightly solid state) to shape their tentacles

    Considering that their hair is the rest of their limbs, I think that its properties may extend to their arms and legs. Things like wether cutting their "hair" is painless or not, its ability to regenerate, etc.
    But it could also be completely different due to each set of limbs specializing in their evolution (something seen in irl cephalopods, to the point where every single arm is unique in some species). The remaining question being to what extent.

      In the artbook of splatoon 2, there's a drawing of the respawn point. It looks similar to a cappuccino machine (and the respawn points in splatoon 3 look even more so) and explains that inklings are "reformed under pressure"
      So inklings/octolings are basically coffee? Lol
      That's what I remember anyway

    • @miakiikazu

      I kinda go with the idea of an invisible forcefield that guides the inklings soul back to the spawn point.

    • @GandalfTheTsaagan
      @GandalfTheTsaagan 2 года назад +3

      For what we're shown; their literal, metaphysical soul leaves their corpse when it's destroyed. But it can regrow an entire new body if there's a friendly respawn nearby.
      This has several implications, like the fact that souls ARE a thing that, without artificial means, will just depart this world, effectively killing someone for good.
      Also, this means that non-octoling octarians (besides the great weapons interestingly) don't have souls! Does this mean that they're mindless drones without a will of their own? Maybe, but not necessarily given that salmonids have a culture, family history and relics and they don't have souls either.
      With all this in mind, it seems like souls are a very cephaling specific thing. Wether this has any mayor implications or will just stay as a quirk of the gameplay's design, who knows.
      Going back to the respawn itself, I have a couple of more sci-fi headcanons:
      A) The ghost is their actual body, and what we see most of the time is just a massive blob of ink that the true body controls. Kinda like a mech pilot. Also akin to gems in Steven Universe.
      When they're splatted, their very light body floats away to safety, and without a friendly respawn it could take forever for them to regrow their ink exterior.
      B) Both their body AND their ghost are their actual body. How? The ghost is just a heavily dehydrated swimming form. As a defense mechanism from sustaining too much damage, their body will expel 90% or more of their liquid in a very fast burst (aka they get splatted). This leaves their body in a very delicate state, but it becomes so light that, paired with the splatting's momentum, it lifts them up and allows them to glide to safety. And from there it's the same, they need the spawn point to regenerate fast.

In the Splatoon 3 story mode trailer, we see Callie’s hair is a bit different as one of her tentacles if moved from the back of her head to the front, replacing one of her bangs. I can’t even think of how it’s possible for that to happen since she basically “moved” her longer hair to the other side of her scalp.

    Until we get a canon answer, I'm just going to go with the interpretation John Sandwich made. Seems simple enough! Though, we can change to a longer hairstyle at will, and no time seems to pass. So, my thought on that regard is that ink is used when going from a shorter to a longer hairstyle. Inkling hair is quite odd.
    Also another headcanon: Inklings do not feel pain when getting their hair cut, while octolings do. Octoling haircuts tend to be much messier consequently, and you'd have to destroy the pieces so they don't turn into Octarians.

    Well, I do want to mention something about the octoling hair creating other octarians. When they mentioned that, I think they were referring to the Octo Troopers (the tentacles with faces), not the actual octolings themselves.
    My theory is that Octolings are the natural species (of which they reproduce naturally if you know what I mean), while Octarians are artificially made. There is evidence of this in the sunken scrolls, in which you see those tentacles found on the great octo weapons were made artificially. I think the same can be said for the Octo Troopers. After all, have you noticed there's that one short tentacle on the enemy octolings' hair? Well, I think they would cut a piece of hair off once it reaches a certain length, then Octarian scientists would reanimate it into a living troop. But if you were to just cut off the hair on its own, nothing would happen. This can all be supported by the fact Octavio was a militarized dictator, so it would make sense for him to want to have as many troops as possible.
    And yes, I believe Inklings and Octolings actually do have sentient control over their hair, as you do see Marina's hair moving around too much for it to be "the wind". Also, if you look closely at Inkling hair (it's best seen on the hippie hairstyle), you will notice the tentacles are not completely limp. They look as if they are holding themselves up (kinda like how a human's arms aren't completely limp). So it is logical to assume they do have control over their hair, they just don't really use it for much because they have hands with opposable thumbs on their humanoid arms, so they have little reason to use their tentacle hair.

    Perhaps natural hair is a sort of coagulation or congealing of secreted ink proteins into an internal semi-permeable structure and "skin" with different proteins making the colored topside and white underside. This would also allow for basically doing whatever you want by properly controlling said proteins and congealing, as well as controlling volume by injecting or drawing ink from different areas. Grilling hair could be done by cauterizing proteins.
