It's revealed in Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion that Octolings aren't brainwashed, but just indoctrinated since childhood, but the Calamary Inkantation the Squid Sisters sang during Splatoon 1's final boss resonated so much in their soul that a good part of the Octolings started to question the state of never-ending war against the Inklings DJ Octavio got the Octarians in, leading them to desert ; that what happened to Marina, but also Agent 8 as we learn throught the mem cakes.

Actually it' still seems like the Octolings that make it to Inkopolis still pretend to be inklings, being afraid of what would happen if people knew what they were. Most likely Inklings would be confused about Octolings actually being alive, and maybe scared by the revelation since they were convinced the Octarians were extinct.

Here’s my theory.
So. We all know that SPOILERS: you get real close to getting smoothied into this goo, to create better life form. But, how does this process really work?
Well, I think that when you enter the facility, you get your memories wiped. That ensures that only the best will emerge form the tests. For exampl, if you were a high trained octoling, of course you would nail the tests. However, you get wiped so you have an equal chance as everyone else. If you pass these tests, you become part of the goo. If you fa-TEST FAILED-il, you become sanitized. The way this process works is that you go into a test tube (like the one in the player select menu) filled with the goo. It turns you into this perfect little minion. This also causes skin and hair colour to change. After this is complete, you get your memory wiped, and you get programmed to work for the facilities tests. Those are the ocotlings you fight in certain levels. (Like girl power station. Man I hated it so much.) The case with Agent 8 was that, she was found fighting Agent 3, and she showed potential. She was then Squidnapped and taken to the facility, and she was wiped (per the process I talked about earlier) She then did the tests, you know the rest. Now what about Dedf1sh?
We know that she wandered into the facility, -like the description about her said- and no workers knew anything about her. They then found out that she spend her time as a DJ. They then saw that she had no potential at all, and Sanitized her. In her description, it states : ‘little of her former self remains’ I think that when you are wiped, you keep some basic memories, like your interests. But these interests are outweighed by the programming that happens to you. So she feels the need not to DJ, even though she remembers it. Kinda.
After you are sanitized, you fight in the tests, like I said. This is because Commander Tartar needs enough SPOILERS: goo to cover Inkopolis. The sanitized octolings also fight in Here Mode to find more octolings to join the tests.
I think the way you are programmed is by the Glasses. We know that SPOILERS: Callie is the final boss of Octo Canyon, and this is because she was brainwashed by DJ Octavio. The Shades Callie wears brainwashed her, and I think it’s the same with the other octolings. The glasses are put on, and they do the work. (I think Erickson Gaming did a video taking this part further. I think the thumbnail has Marina on it if you want to go watch it)
Now, what if Agent 8 was ALREADY sanitized? In the start of the Octo Expansion, Captain Cuttlefish states that you were humming ‘Callimari Inkantation’ right before you came to. What if Agent 8 was freed my the song, (like Marina) but then got Squidnapped back to the facility? I think that not all octolings escaped. Only the lucky. Most got taken back, to redo the tests. This might also explain Marina’s glowing fingers, which are blue. The sanitized octolings are blue. When Marina was freed, her skin went back to normal. Well, most of it. That’s also why the end of her hair is blue. Because not all original colour was returned.

I think Callie WAS upset after the Splatfest results and DID intentionally separate from Marie. I think at this point DJ Octavio saw his chance because the two were separated(power in numbers and all that). So Callie being vulnerable, he easily hypnotized her. After Callie’s Hypnoshades were knocked off, it still took some convincing by Marie to get Callie to join her, hinting towards the fact that Callie was still feeling some emotional unrest. So I think the driving point of Callie’s siding with DJ Octavio was a combination the Hypnoshades and Callie’s emotional inner conflict after the results of the Splatfest.
thats why marie was in the campaign as an ally instead of the final boss. would of happened but switched around if callie won.

As said in the sunken scroll showing Marina it says many octarians had a change of heart that day and at the end of Splatoon 1 the end credits showed Inklings and Octolings getting along. It's very possible that the Octolings in Splatoon 2 are being brainwashed just as Callie was. Having them be playable in a future update would be great and make sense as we have defeated Octavio once again setting the Octolings free. Besides I just LOVE the Octoling design and would love to have the option to play as one! Hopefully in OCTOber?

If you get octo expansion, it explains more of why octolings are bad. Marina Ida says that the Calamari Inktation had changed her life. And in the beginning, *cough cough* SPOILERS *cough* a totally innocent octoling is taking a walk, LISTENING TO THE CALAMARI INKTATION, when Captain Cuttlefish gets agent 3 to attack him/her. When he wakes up captain cuttlefish is standing over the octoling, which has lost its memory. Then captain cuttlefish mentions that the octoling was humming the calamari Inktation. On chat sessions 6, 7, and 10 it talks about octolings being in inkoplis. If you buy octo expansion, maybe make a 2nd part to this video adding to the theory. And when you beat the final boss in octo expansion, you have the option to play as an octoling.(And yes, I know octo expansion wasn't out yet when this video was published. Stay Fresh~!)

Who’s watching this in 2021 when the octo expansion has been released and we can play as octolings
In splatoon 1 the octolings weren’t brainwashed at all, but in the final battle (which was set in a concert if I remember) the squid sister’s music made the octolings think “I don’t want to fight the inklings anymore” and they got brain washed. But some octolings (Marina) got away before they were brain washed. That’s my theory
this theory seems even more legit because of the upcoming dlc for splatoon 2 where when you finish the second Campaign Mode you can play as your octoling character even in turf battles, and in the trailer the octoling player doesnt have glasses, but the green octolings she attacks do wear those glasses with the red dots,
The thing is though, Agent 8 walks PAST the Octolings with the glasses on, and they make no move to attack her. Yeah, there's the scene in which the Octoling has an Inkjet and is attacking Agent 8, but in another scene 8 is walking in a cargo of the subway and the Octolings make no move towards her.

In the text messages with Cap'n Cuttlefish, Pearl and Marina, Cap'n and Pearl talk about marina and she used to be an Octarian, Marina Ida, and when she heard Calamari Inktation, before vanishing she said, "This changes Everything". Then she met Pearl on Mt. Nantai and all of a sudden she was like LETS START A BAND. This is basically the origin of marina and how she ended up with pearl

The song that Callie and Marie sing can turn the octolings good it says it on page 2 of the lost scrolls “Anyone lucky enough to catch DJ Octavio’s opening set and the Squid Sisters headlining had their minds blown and their live changed that night.”
I really like this theory, it makes sense and could mean that octolings could be playable

YTThe CMate while yes I do believe this theory I disagree with your statement. The screams were definitely not hypnotism at all. Think this: brainwashing in this case would be almost instant and there wouldn’t be any kind of reaction. The screams were most likely the sounds of death. You can hear things falling apart as even stated in the sunken scrolls that the Octarian world was deteriorating. It is more likely that something broke and then the screams can be heard of s me kind of creature, probably an octoling, as they fall to their death.

How Callie got brainwashed is sort of like how Louie from Pikmin 2 got took over by the Titan Dweevil. Think about it. While they both don't really do much during the final bosses, they both stand by the final boss' side. There has also been confusion to if these characters joined the final boss by choice. Also, both boss battles start off with the player finding these characters, both of which have been searched for before the boss. There are tons of other ways Callie and Louie are similar, but I just wanted to point that out.

Cousin Party I just realized what I said, I meant to say Louie is the one controlling the dweevil. The titan dweevil is normally a passive creature. Louie’s the one who weaponized it, and ended up controlling it like a puppet.
It’s possible that the octolings didn’t know about the war based off the fact they thought the final boss battle in the end of the first game was a concert.

It always used to baffle me how different playable octolings and story mode octolings look. I mean, they look very different. Story mode octolings have thick tentacles and purple eye outlines, and playable ones have thinner tentacles and dark eye outlines of a different shape.
My theory:
The ocotlings WERE brainwashed by the goggles BUT when some of the ocotlings (like Marina, Agent 8) hear the squid sisters music there soul is enlightened and maybe sometimes swap sides! Even Marina states that the squid sisters music changed her in the Octo expansion DLC!

Funny thing replaying the story mode the dialog changes DJ Octavio claims he's re remixed Callie's brain but Callie's reveals this time she put on the glasses because they looked cool despite knowing there mind controlling
I'm 100% sure that the octolings' glasses in Splatoon 2 are based of the glasses that the Terminator wore in the first movie after he removed his eye to prevent people seeing his exposed endoskeleton eye.
i think Octavio wants to take over with octarians, and of course there’s the few that want it to be equal with inklings as well, so that’s where the hypno shades come in, so octavio hypnotised the octolings, but the ones that managed to get away (agent 8, marina) were touched by the calamari inkantation, so he decided to hypnotise Callie too! and also since marina used to design things in slimeskin garrison, he may or may not hypnotise marina as well, i think that would be cool, don’t get me wrong- it’s getting done repetitively and it can be annoying, but it would be cool to be against marina.

I've personnaly always had the theory that the goggles Octoling were wearing in Splatoon 1 were for those who purposely working for DJ Octavio, while the shades they were wearing in Splatoon 2 was for those who didn't want to work for DJ Octavio but were brainwashed into it. However, neither the Octoling goggles or shades have "(replica)" in their name, so yeah maybe they just don't work. But the Octoling goggles doesn't seem to be Brainwashing to me- And in the pictures, we've never seen an Octoling with shades taking these off (as far as I can remember at least).
And now with Octo Expansion, we learned Marina's backstory. In the pictures, we can see she had the goggles, and not the shades, which would mean, if I follow my own theory, Marina was not brainwashed, and in her backstory, we learn that she was in the Octarian army and did pretty well in school and everything. But at 16 years old, she heard the Calamary Inkantation and just said "This changes everything" and then vanished. So as we know, Calamary Inkantation has some strage power that helped the Octolings just like it helped Agent 8, so as she heard the Inkantation, she started thinking otherwise and ran away from the Octarian army. And then she met Pearl and started to live in peace with the inklings in Inkopolis Square.

It is literally stated in the artbook for splatoon 2 that the shades are for weaponry aim and nothing else.
There is legit no proof to this except "oh these shades look similar" but a plot point as major as all octolings are brainwashed wouldve definetly been brought up.

Also, Watch the Chat Logs. Its waaaay better than sunken scrolls exposition.
Despite this theory being out of date by now, it was well constructed and used a lot of good points of evidence with what we had to go by at the time.
Although, I will point a few things out:
-The Hero Gear is specified to be replica's when you get them for multiplayer, but the Octo gear in both games is not, implying they're the real deal.
-It's more implied (especially in the Japanese versions) that Octolings are indoctrinated with propaganda from a young age, which is why they work for Octavio. Sunken Scroll #8 in Splatoon 1 is a good example of this, and Scroll #5 may also be propaganda expressing that Inklings are dangerous.
-Sunken Scroll #9 implies that Octolings aren't very well known among Inklings, and may not be recognized by the public at all. As the Octo Expansion would later show us, they don't.
But again, even though I'm seeing this for the first time after even Splatoon 3 has released, I liked this theory.
This video is extremely comedic and enjoyable to watch after Octo Expansion. Not that its a bad thing, nobody could've predicted it, its just really interesting to see where they were wrong and right.
It also makes me very hyped to see early, undercover signs of the impending Octo Expansion despite having played it already.

It can just be retconned that Callie's shades was just but a prototype design, a far more advanced tech than the goggles the Octolings were wearing in the first game. One that was not only far more effective in mindcontrolling Octolings but Inklings as well. It was also less bulky, lighter in weight, and probably easy to mass-produce on a large scale. I bet they had plans to enslave the Inklings from the start. >:)

Very minor spoilers: The reason why the populace aren't freaked out by Marina is because they think she is an "exotic inkling." The general populace probably don't know what an Octoling looks like, Pearl included, chalking it, and the fact she speaks a different language, up to some new fashion.

I believe that in splatoon 1, the octolings were battling by choice. However... We find out in splatoon 2 that Marina, inspired by Callie and Marie's song, fled in order to pursue a career in music. Agent 8 was also influenced by this song.
I think that those two weren't the only octolings inspired. I think that there were many octolings who changed, some of them may have even started uprisings against Octavio. Octavio, seeing that he had a new growing threat, mind controlled every octoling.
In the Octo Expansion, it's revealed that somehow, nobody knows that Marina is an Octoling. She heard the Calamari Incantation and said something about how "this changes everything". She would then get with Pearl and start Off The Hook.
In the Octo expansion, Marina is revealed as an Octoling. No characters in Splatoon (2) knew that. 😂
I also have a theory
Marina was able to get away from DJ octavio with the music from the squid sisters and all that and when she finally came to the surface she became good friends with pearl, so much so that they became really good friends and decided to make Off The Hook together and the reason why no one mentions marina being an octoling is because pearl pays them hush money in case it would hurt marina's feelings.
Stupid theory but worth a try !
People keep saying they "split up" but if you read the short stories they never officially split up at all. They both just had different interests, Marie in live performances and Callie in tv show appearances. Their work kept them apart but they were still very close, emotionally. However the huge workload was taking a major toll on them both, Callie it seems most of all. It's also explicitly stated that Callie held no ill will after the final splatfest, though Marie did wonder if she had but later felt silly for thinking it.
In the end, it was when the two sisters "split up" that Callie got Squidnapped. Marie went ahead on vacation, expecting Callie to be there the next day; Callie couldn't come with her, initially, because she had a appointment she couldn't miss. Then a worn out Callie, apparently, was left to go home on her own which is likely when she got grabbed.
As to why it took so long for her to recover, you try being brainwashed for potentially weeks and try and instantly snap out of it. The brainwashing also seemed to affect her memory to a small degree. What effect Marie's Low Tide Ink had, I'm not sure, but it may have helped her regain her senses quicker. If you watch closely, Callie is still singing for a while after the glasses are knocked off; likely she was still minorly under his influence. And also nobody is considering how long it actually may have taken to brainwash her to begin with. For all we know, she may have fought tooth and tentacle not to get controlled but eventually succumbed due to exhaustion.

Somewhere a few months back I actually thought that marina was an inkling untill I played the og game which made me get back in the splatoon fandom to watch more videos of splatoon, and now that im more observant that marina WAS an octoling.
Not me watching this when Splatoon 3 is out, knowing everything about Octo expansion and the fact octolings are free in Splatoon 3.
