Rassikas, I can give you a very valid and realistic reason why marine mammals would go extinct. With all the flooding we would have a rapid change in the salinity on the water, making marine animals hypertonic in comparison to the sea. Unlike many other sea animals, most marine animals take a long time to get into sexual maturity, and usually have very few children at a time. This would mean they might not be able to keep up with this rapidly changing environment. That means they would die out/get out competed. I probably expressed myself very badly.

The narwhal thing was a massive joke that flew over everyone’s head since the whole Splatfest was based on mythical horned animals. Narwhals would probably be unicorns to inklings just from how things transfer to their culture.
Given how all of inkopolis thought octolings were extinct in the first game, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there were a small population of cetaceans and/or sirenians living somewhere in the ocean. It seems inklings' observation skills aren't that great xD
From what I found, it isn't that they believed Octarians were extinct, it's that they don't believe Octarians are real. The same way that Marina talks about how she wishes humans were real, despite also stating that human bones can be found anywhere. Not that she wishes humans were alive, but that they were real. This is especially important because Octo Expansion did change some dialogue for Off the Hook, but not that line. And in Octo Expansion, Cuttlefish seeing the human statue says that the humans are extinct, meaning there is a difference between being real and being alive.

My personal headcanon is that Marine mammals are more prominent in lore is because they survived longer than land mammals. Maybe some more resilient species they were still around when inklings were just gaining sentience,meaning that the ideas and awareness of some sea mammals existed in the inkling and general sea creature conscious,became an important part of squid culture.
I imagine them like the megafauna, they are hella old and extinct, but we do know how they were because our species was alive during that time, seeing and drawing them and the future generations. We still think sabertooths and mammoths are cool as hell, so they must think that too
About the milk argument: I’ve heard that some fish can produce substances that act like milk, though they are chemically different. The Discus Fish and the Arapaima can both produce a substance that helps their young thrive, effectively what milk does.

I hate to bring up the shallow theory of "it's for entertainment so it's fake," but, given that Marina and Pearl live together (as an earlier comment stated), it's entirely possible the "narwhal landlord" thing was just a bit for the cameras. Just some "we don't know how to set up saying this stuff about narwhals, so Marina, why don't you pretend you pay one rent! It's not like they know you live with Pearl anyway!" Given the Octo Expansion retcons Marina's early localization personality as being an act, it's not out of the realm of possibility for them to fudge things for the camera.
Considering the most marine mammals are currently some kind of endangered its not surprising that 3 extra world wars and the nuking of the icecaps would kill off any that had survived to that point. The state of the world prior to the extinction of humans was probably pretty bad environmentally wise. How many animals do we know canonly survived? Animal animals not sea life that evolved.
One reason why marine mammals might have gone extinct could be because of the weapons of mass destruction used the the squids in the great turf war that you brought up in your iceberg video. Many marine mammals might have already gone extinct before then, but if there were any left then those squid wmd would have definitely killed them.

You brought up a point i was very confused about recently which was the weird times pearl seemed to have known Marina was an Octoling before the expansion but during it, she sounded like she just found out.
NOA really tried to cover their ass for that mistake in the OE dialogue by having pearl say that 'it was just jokes.' but yeah, JP makes it more clear, pearl Definitely didn't know marina was an octoling!
@@rassicas Well, I mean, that too is kinda confusing too. How did she not know Marina was an Octoling. It isn't something you can hide like how a Wizard can hide their magic from others, because she is one outside and magic is inside. She must have invented a whole series of cover stories, which in the end probably should've had Pearl break away from Marina. This isn't like the TV show Merlin where Arthur is an idiot who has grown overly attached to Merlin, no, there has to be some psychological reason for why Pearl hangs around Marina so much. She must have never bought Marina's stories in the first place or she can't bear the thought of losing Marina because of either School Trouble's (it is a whole running gag that Pearl is too short, so she could've been bullied because of that) or because of family troubles (Money can't buy you love) and she has grown too clingy around Marina. There could be hundreds of other reasons why they hang out together, from Pearl having an entire villain arc viewing her as a cheap source of revenue for her talents (she did have some bratty tendencies in some of her dialog) to her just appreciating and sitting back in awe at her technological imagination (She constantly says that she has never seened most of the things that Marina has built). Heck, perhaps all of these happened as her character developed, we will probably never know since we know that they didn't focus on the Squid Sisters, Captain Cuttlefish, DJ Octavio etc for lore reasons due to budgeting and expectations for the series' success. So, we will probably have to wait a long while before we get something more in depth for how and why, and I definitely don't want something short-term gap fill because they have been performing together for long enough that there has to be something between them that they haven't revealed to us.
My theory is that the marine mammals went extinct from a lack of oxygen. The flooding would have killed all the plants, reducing the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere, which caused problems for marine mammals because they get their air from the surface (they don't have gills). Most oxygen is provided by algae though, so perhaps the rising sea level reduced the amount of light for the algae, leading to some of it also dying, reducing the amount of oxygen above the sea for the marine mammals further.
That’s sounds decently sensible but won’t the lack of oxygen affect Judd and lil Judd too maybe even affecting the octolings and inklings that could also breath oxygen? Perhaps the octolings and inklings don’t breath oxygen and Judd and Lil Judd use respirators that mountaineers use.

Clearly, we see trees in Splatoon, and many kinds of land plants from our time are stated to exist, so it's likely that they made a resurgence after the extinction of mammals. Given the fact that there aren't a lot of ways to kill off all the algae on earth short of completely demolishing the oceans, (which would have killed off all the sea life), so this theory, while interesting, still leaves a lot of things unexplained.
Not only is there a ton of greenery, many forms of aquatic plants would likely thrive in the splatoon world, so the oxygen difference probably would not be enough.

To be fair... considering they treat mammals as dinosaurs, it is possible that narwhal is kind of an in-universe slang for "old person", and maybe Marina was just joking about her lanlord being really old.
Some thoughts: 1. Marina said her landlord was a narwal in the same joking way someone would say their landlord was a dinosaur. Their just really old and maybe a bit mean. 2. Since mammals are "coming back" as Octarians in Splatoon 3, dolphin Octolings and like a marine mammal boss would be really cool, and it also drives the message home that they were extinct before the return of the mammalians. 3. Is it possible for a non-mammal to evolve into a mammal, either naturally or forced? I'm not saying "Ooh, whales aren't mammals anymore so now they can play on land with the Inklings!", That would be kinda dumb, but it would be interesting to see if the Octarians, the Inklings, Grizzco, anyone were to create a living-I guess mutant?-marine mammal, kinda like what's already happened to Octo troopers. 4. Does anyone think we'll see any regular Octarians in story mode? Everyone is so caught up in a new species, will the old one still be around? Or have all Octarians been mammalized? 5. An idea i've had as to why mammals also might be extinct is that (depending on how high the waters flooded to) since the surface of the water aka air was higher up in the world in general, that well for one it took more effort just to go and breathe, but to my own point, maybe it got so high to the point where the overall climate was very low, and air becomes sparse, aka it becomes harder to breathe, especially if most of the tree and flora is under the water (I would assume), there probably isnt as much oxygen for there to breathe in the first place. If my limited and dumb knowledge of science is to go by I could be wrong here

There was this special on animal planet years ago. Biologists and scientists and stuff came up with what if scenarios of humanity ended and stuff. By the end mammals were extinct and various squid species became the dominate species. It’s worth a watch to kinda sorta explain how mammals could go extinct. It’s from the very early 2000s.

Sounds very reasonable. The Splatfest themes come from "up high", which would imply Heaven, meaning they're coming from either a dead person or something divine, and humans could be revered as both of these by Inklings. These themes are also delivered through a fax machine, an archaic piece of technology only us humans would know about.

Well I would think at least some records survived from the human age. Maybe they found some ancient artistic renditions or data stored somewhere. Or like some kid's plastic animals toy set, because plastic takes Forrrreeevvvveeeerrrrr to break down, especially if it was sheltered from the elements or just buried somewhere.
The sunken scrolls have some surviving pictures from the human era, and Splatfests come from a human fax machine, so we can assume that some human media was left intact. Also we can see from a sunken scroll with a Wii U and the fact that Tartar has been around for 12,00 years as proof that some computers may have survived with salvageable data

Something I would love to have seen and could’ve possibly been the direction (although unlikely) of splatoon 3’s “Order” Story could perhaps have been the return of the ancient sea mammals that retreated into the deepest depths of the ocean, perhaps evolving and acting almost as “aliens” in the sense that they come from the ocean below where inklings originated, parallel to the the theory that we humans come from space and anything from behind the stars would be alien to us. It could be a cool idea and an interesting direction to take such a core part of the story (in the sense that mammals are gone) that is still so unknown.
To be fair, that dialogue about MakoMart only specifically confirms that *Humpback* Whales are extinct. They were extinct in Star Trek (prior to 2286) too. And there's been cross-region reference before. Pearl in the NA version calling herself "MC Warm Breakfast" is a reference to an EU-only Splatfest.
Another reason is because the sea levels didn’t only raise, but they got extremely hot too, thats why inkings die in water but can still drink it (because the water is so hot) so I think sea mammals simply couldn’t adapt fast enough to the land like the inklings etc did and died out in the water being too hot. Just another of my theories.

See, the references to extinct mammals makes me curious about splatoon palaeontology. How do they know the patterns of things like Orcas and Zebras? But know nothing else about them? Had they found ancient human art about these animals? Or did they find incredibly well preserved fossils?
Human relics seem more likely to me. Humanity would want to leave behind notes on the way we understood our own world- we already have the Svalbard Global Seed Bank and the Voyager Golden Record for example. After many world wars and with catastrophe looming over all life on earth, I think humanity would probably try to preserve some knowledge for future intelligent life. Through the course of time these documents may have been damaged, but some knowledge could probably be gleaned from the surviving parts inklings were able to find.
19:03 i know this is off topic and unnecessary but i am going to answer this question right now because i want to! according to hisashi nogami in an interview at around july 2019, he stated that after splatoon 2 was completed, they focused on octo expansion and new updates, and they were not going to focus on the future of splatoon until they complete the version 5.0 update. this means that splatoon 3’s development did not start as of july 2019, but started development probably not long after version 5.0 were released. this is actually very different from the development of splatoon 2, which started immediately after the realease of splatoon. i got this information from inkipedia, its right under the development section of the splatoon 3 page!

I hate to bring up the shallow theory of "it's for entertainment so it's fake," but, given that Marina and Pearl live together (as an earlier comment stated), it's entirely possible the "narwhal landlord" thing was just a bit for the cameras. Just some "we don't know how to set up saying this stuff about narwhals, so Marina, why don't you pretend you pay one rent! It's not like they know you live with Pearl anyway!" Given the Octo Expansion retcons Marina's early localization personality as being an act, it's not out of the realm of possibility for them to fudge things for the camera.

Considering the most marine mammals are currently some kind of endangered its not surprising that 3 extra world wars and the nuking of the icecaps would kill off any that had survived to that point. The state of the world prior to the extinction of humans was probably pretty bad environmentally wise. How many animals do we know canonly survived? Animal animals not sea life that evolved.
Plot twist: The landlord is really just an Inkling in a narwhal suit finding ways to make money.
One reason why marine mammals might have gone extinct could be because of the weapons of mass destruction used the the squids in the great turf war that you brought up in your iceberg video. Many marine mammals might have already gone extinct before then, but if there were any left then those squid wmd would have definitely killed them.

I've noticed that Nintendo developers usually use open wording like that in interviews, probably to avoid writing themselves into a corner when they need to retcon something.
You brought up a point i was very confused about recently which was the weird times pearl seemed to have known Marina was an Octoling before the expansion but during it, she sounded like she just found out.
NOA really tried to cover their ass for that mistake in the OE dialogue by having pearl say that 'it was just jokes.' but yeah, JP makes it more clear, pearl Definitely didn't know marina was an octoling!
@@rassicas Well, I mean, that too is kinda confusing too. How did she not know Marina was an Octoling. It isn't something you can hide like how a Wizard can hide their magic from others, because she is one outside and magic is inside. She must have invented a whole series of cover stories, which in the end probably should've had Pearl break away from Marina. This isn't like the TV show Merlin where Arthur is an idiot who has grown overly attached to Merlin, no, there has to be some psychological reason for why Pearl hangs around Marina so much.
She must have never bought Marina's stories in the first place or she can't bear the thought of losing Marina because of either School Trouble's (it is a whole running gag that Pearl is too short, so she could've been bullied because of that) or because of family troubles (Money can't buy you love) and she has grown too clingy around Marina. There could be hundreds of other reasons why they hang out together, from Pearl having an entire villain arc viewing her as a cheap source of revenue for her talents (she did have some bratty tendencies in some of her dialog) to her just appreciating and sitting back in awe at her technological imagination (She constantly says that she has never seened most of the things that Marina has built). Heck, perhaps all of these happened as her character developed, we will probably never know since we know that they didn't focus on the Squid Sisters, Captain Cuttlefish, DJ Octavio etc for lore reasons due to budgeting and expectations for the series' success. So, we will probably have to wait a long while before we get something more in depth for how and why, and I definitely don't want something short-term gap fill because they have been performing together for long enough that there has to be something between them that they haven't revealed to us.
My theory is that the marine mammals went extinct from a lack of oxygen. The flooding would have killed all the plants, reducing the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere, which caused problems for marine mammals because they get their air from the surface (they don't have gills). Most oxygen is provided by algae though, so perhaps the rising sea level reduced the amount of light for the algae, leading to some of it also dying, reducing the amount of oxygen above the sea for the marine mammals further.
That’s sounds decently sensible but won’t the lack of oxygen affect Judd and lil Judd too maybe even affecting the octolings and inklings that could also breath oxygen?
Perhaps the octolings and inklings don’t breath oxygen and Judd and Lil Judd use respirators that mountaineers use.

Clearly, we see trees in Splatoon, and many kinds of land plants from our time are stated to exist, so it's likely that they made a resurgence after the extinction of mammals. Given the fact that there aren't a lot of ways to kill off all the algae on earth short of completely demolishing the oceans, (which would have killed off all the sea life), so this theory, while interesting, still leaves a lot of things unexplained.
Not only is there a ton of greenery, many forms of aquatic plants would likely thrive in the splatoon world, so the oxygen difference probably would not be enough.

Some thoughts:
1. Marina said her landlord was a narwal in the same joking way someone would say their landlord was a dinosaur. Their just really old and maybe a bit mean.
2. Since mammals are "coming back" as Octarians in Splatoon 3, dolphin Octolings and like a marine mammal boss would be really cool, and it also drives the message home that they were extinct before the return of the mammalians.
3. Is it possible for a non-mammal to evolve into a mammal, either naturally or forced? I'm not saying "Ooh, whales aren't mammals anymore so now they can play on land with the Inklings!", That would be kinda dumb, but it would be interesting to see if the Octarians, the Inklings, Grizzco, anyone were to create a living-I guess mutant?-marine mammal, kinda like what's already happened to Octo troopers.
4. Does anyone think we'll see any regular Octarians in story mode? Everyone is so caught up in a new species, will the old one still be around? Or have all Octarians been mammalized?

An idea i've had as to why mammals also might be extinct is that (depending on how high the waters flooded to) since the surface of the water aka air was higher up in the world in general, that well for one it took more effort just to go and breathe, but to my own point, maybe it got so high to the point where the overall climate was very low, and air becomes sparse, aka it becomes harder to breathe, especially if most of the tree and flora is under the water (I would assume), there probably isnt as much oxygen for there to breathe in the first place.
If my limited and dumb knowledge of science is to go by I could be wrong here
Now I’m imagining sea creatures trying to reach the surface to breathe while the water rises above them and the sonic drowning music plays

I just looked up the Unicorn vs Narwhal dialogue. Guys, this dialogue is from an argument on whether narwhals are even real or not. Not to mention it could just be slang.

There was this special on animal planet years ago. Biologists and scientists and stuff came up with what if scenarios of humanity ended and stuff. By the end mammals were extinct and various squid species became the dominate species. It’s worth a watch to kinda sorta explain how mammals could go extinct.

Sounds very reasonable. The Splatfest themes come from "up high", which would imply Heaven, meaning they're coming from either a dead person or something divine, and humans could be revered as both of these by Inklings. These themes are also delivered through a fax machine, an archaic piece of technology only us humans would know about.
Sea Mammals have to get air from the surface right? And their food is closer to the bottom of the ocean? Maybe the water got so high that it was to difficult for them to get both air AND food. I'm not an expert on animals but that's my theory.

Also we can see from a sunken scroll with a Wii U and the fact that Tartar has been around for 12,00 years as proof that some computers may have survived with salvageable data

Something I would love to have seen and could’ve possibly been the direction (although unlikely) of splatoon 3’s “Order” Story could perhaps have been the return of the ancient sea mammals that retreated into the deepest depths of the ocean, perhaps evolving and acting almost as “aliens” in the sense that they come from the ocean below where inklings originated, parallel to the the theory that we humans come from space and anything from behind the stars would be alien to us. It could be a cool idea and an interesting direction to take such a core part of the story (in the sense that mammals are gone) that is still so unknown.

To be fair, that dialogue about MakoMart only specifically confirms that *Humpback* Whales are extinct. They were extinct in Star Trek (prior to 2286) too.

Another reason is because the sea levels didn’t only raise, but they got extremely hot too, thats why inkings die in water but can still drink it (because the water is so hot) so I think sea mammals simply couldn’t adapt fast enough to the land like the inklings etc did and died out in the water being too hot. Just another of my theories.

See, the references to extinct mammals makes me curious about splatoon palaeontology. How do they know the patterns of things like Orcas and Zebras? But know nothing else about them? Had they found ancient human art about these animals? Or did they find incredibly well preserved fossils?
Human relics seem more likely to me. Humanity would want to leave behind notes on the way we understood our own world- we already have the Svalbard Global Seed Bank and the Voyager Golden Record for example. After many world wars and with catastrophe looming over all life on earth, I think humanity would probably try to preserve some knowledge for future intelligent life. Through the course of time these documents may have been damaged, but some knowledge could probably be gleaned from the surviving parts inklings were able to find.

according to hisashi nogami in an interview at around july 2019, he stated that after splatoon 2 was completed, they focused on octo expansion and new updates, and they were not going to focus on the future of splatoon until they complete the version 5.0 update. this means that splatoon 3’s development did not start as of july 2019, but started development probably not long after version 5.0 were released. this is actually very different from the development of splatoon 2, which started immediately after the realease of splatoon.
