  • The 2GR-FE has a main timing chain driven by the crankshaft. The main timing chain drives the intake gear on each bank. Two secondary chains, driven by the intake gears, drive the exhaust gears. Installing the secondary chains correctly is crucial for correct valve timing. The 2GR-FE is a popular V6 engine used in Toyota Camry, Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, RAV4, Lexus RX350 featuring dual Variable Valve Timing on intake and exhaust cams.

Wow thank you for this explanation. I have a 2010 Sienna with a Bank 2 exhaust VVT with the pressed-in sleeve coming out. The body of the VVT is actually cracked clear through.
I don't have the means to remove the engine in my driveway, but if I line up the flat spot on the VVT like you show, can I remove the exhaust cam with the VVT attached?

Or really I just need to lift the cam an inch to get the VVT bolt out.

@@johnbalison Yes it is possible to change the cam gears with the engine in the car. This is an advanced procedure. It requires that you support the timing chain so it does not drop. Then you loosen all the cam caps and take the cams out. There are many pitfalls to doing it this way. There is no documentation anywhere for how to do it - you must rely on your experience and judgement. Study the Factory Service Manual closely - it calls for removing the timing chain entirely with the engine out of the car, however you can get the key points of the cam replacement process from the FSM.

@@Merryfrankster_ Yes brilliant thanks. I am lucky that the only one I need to change is bank 2 exhaust. At least that's what I think, it's the only code I get and it clearly has a crack in the body. Anyway, the exhaust doesn't engage the timing chain, just the secondary chain from the intake gear, and the intake gear engages the timing chain. I painted a couple of links for reference, and removed the cam caps. The gear and cam can be lifted the inch or so needed to get a socket on the cam bolt. Once the bolt is out the cam comes out easily and the gear can be disengaged from the chain. Excellent tip about the flat spot, it's essential to line that up in advance.
Had to order the new gear, wont be here until Tuesday. Thanks again for a terrific video.

But how do you do all these engine in car, that is tricky.

You can leave the engine in the car but you must remove the camshafts from the engine to change the gears.

You have a proble with the width. I see. In the video I pointed out that you must lign up the flat sections of the cam gears in order to fit the chain.
