I can't imagine anyone getting upset with someone else testing various setups and providing pluses and minuses. You and Josh's videos are very helpful in this manner, not to mention very entertaining.
Maybe I missed it in the video, but there should definitely be a note about needing to reverse the motor direction and making a small gearing change to make up for the lost reduction in the hubs! I loved this mod though. Nothing better than a low slung crawler

Nice! I was searching earlier this year build topics or running videos about TRX-4 with portal delete kit. I didn't found any. Also research trx-4 gearing with portal delete kit, smaller motor pinion suggested.. I guess :) So waiting for running video with portal delete kit. Big thumbs up!

We have Axial (no portal) and Traxxas (std portal). Portal have may advantage for obstacles between wheels, the problems with high center of gravity are more caused by high and heavy top, than by portals. Removing portals make the chassis lower and gives more problems with short transverse obstacles. I think is foolish ! To solve problems, buy Sport model from Traxxas instead of more expensive models ! Quite foolish too, but real solution !
This is the Sport. I've addressed a lot of chassis CG lowering techniques, and this was another option, so I went for it. Don't like it? No problem! Enjoy your truck the way you want to!
I have been debating doing this for a while on my trx4 but ill watch and see the running video. How much gear ratio did you lose and how much did it possibly speed up the the overall truck without the portals
How about the gear ratio ? Without portals you will increase the final gear ratio. Will you also change the pinion/spur gears, ou will stay with a faster rig in the end?

Oh man, that is awesome I bought the delete kit and then bought the sport kit so I had a comparison. Remember to gear down before you head out to a 45/9 or you will nuke that motor with the lack of portal gear Reduction!
I know this video isn't new, but as I'm getting a TRX4 Sport I've been watching both of these build offs. Great series and subbed to both channels. I get removing portals to lower COG, but why run a hidden cage under a painted camper effectively raising COG??
The weight removed vastly outweighs the weight gained. And sometimes, it's nice to do something for the look of it, rather than always worrying about performance.

From what I've seen from the comps I've been to, the low COG straight axle trucks have been beating up the portal trucks. Portals do work good on the trails though

If you do portals correctly, just like traxxas did, you do not raise the truck, you just tuck away the axles. I believe it's a misconception that portals gives you more ride hight.

It’s your truck so do what you want. That said I told Harley Designs not to do the aftermarket chassis. So I think you should have left it alone. Looking forward to seeing how it works.

I wager you'll see our old friend torque twist return with a vengeance compared to stock, but the lower CoG is likely worth it once you do some good ol tuning to combat the TT. I have been contemplating a non portal swap for my Sport but haven't tried anything yet.
Enjoy the portal delete but think you could have went over it alittle more. Instead of just speeding threw it all. Some people would like to see how this is done
You make a great point. Honestly, I was very preoccupied with a couple other things this week and to make sure the video got out, I had to rush the actual conversion and time lapse it. It's a pretty detailed and easy conversion. SSD provides all the parts, good instructions, and excellent fitment. You will want to gear down, as you're losing a bunch of reduction at the axle. Although, this might make for a new Dragbolt contender... ;)
SSD makes some reLly nice parts I have lots of sad items on a couple of my rigs and they look great and made my rigs look more scale and added beef tubes to add a little weight down low.
Portals? We don't need no stinking portals:D Nothing wrong with trying something outside of the box and am interested to see how the driving characteristics change with the modification.

I too have been considering it, but its a salty cost to not just sell the trx axles and swap something else under it instead. The loss of gear reduction also has me a bit concerned about it. If there was a cheaper option out there to try it out, I would have likely already done it. Seems to be very un popular swap in general. Good luck though, I'll be watching.

Hi I just converted one of my trx4 to a d-portal rig and it is way over geared now even with a 9t pinion and a 45 spur are you running stock motor? What else have you done to lower the gearing thanks Dean 👍

I've seen portal axle on one to one crawlers. So they are scale on 10th scale crawlers.

Portals have their place, and I have seen them on buggies, so it's a thing for sure. Never seen them on a Bronco, or a Blazer though. ;)

I lost a ton of reduction. I'll be modifying to get it back. Tons of speed now.

since the portals are deleted; new overall ratio: ~15:1
potential changes:
- min. 2200 kv equiv. (to keep ~8 mph top speed)
- 9T pinion gear for the new motor
- 45T spur gear
- underdrive pinion/ring gears to both axles for additional reduction
new calculation:
- differential: 3.50:1
- NO-portal axle: 1:1
- transmission: 2.22:1
- pinion/spur: 5:1
- overall: ~39:1

Yes! I love my portal delete! Be ware the new gearing is around 30:1 and the motor rotation needs to be swapped. I can't wait to see your run video!

To be fair, so am I. I thought by now they'd have an option. But this truck's trans isn't really designed for that.

Sure, depending on your preference for chassis layout and battery size requirements, etc. Traxxas makes a pretty robust chassis.

I do find that the portals make it easier to drive compared to my friends rigs with normal axles but I can see why you did it. Looks cool 👍

you may consider using undergear pinion/ring gears for both differentials. this way you can get ~38:1 overall gear reduction
