Viewers often say my channel is like this person and that person. I just don’t see it. My story is unique. I don’t like a lot of channels out there on RUclips, but there is at least one channel that I really respect and admire: Bald and Bankrupt. If people say my channel is cool like his, I would be honored. -Anming

National Notables That’s true. That was my only point of disagreement with his videos and some of the titles. But other than that I like his style and his Hindi and Russian skills.

Bald is a pretty cool guy. I admire how relaxed and adaptive he is in various situations, it's a skill to be that good with people of different cultures and backgrounds and handle some tense situations when he's alone in a new place. Sometimes he pushes himself to the point of stupidity and I wonder how he's not been killed or kidnapped but a lot can be learned from somebody like him who sees the best in everyone.
I don't really compare channels so much either, I'm mostly just drawn to people who are interesting in how they adapt to new languages and cultures and are positive. I avoid the negative expat channels with all those "dispelling the dream about living in Japan/where they moved to!" nonsense where they are just whining about their own experience. It's most likely their own inability to adapt and learn to do things a different way than they are used to.

If i rewatch pretending it's a bald and bankrupt episode.. you wore a soviet mask, held a soviet banana phone, had soviet bbq..spotted the soviet snowman.. but no vodka, babushkas, statues (well maybe the snowman counts), abandoned places or hitchhiking or taxis.. I guess one good thing you got going on is you both skip stupid intros and go straight into awesome content. If you like bald, you might also find shiey interesting, but he's more a stupidly crazy soviet urbex explorer

Thanks. I learned as an adult so there will always be a slight accent. I don't think it came out very much in this video though. You'd have to hear my school presentations at Fudan to hear the accent come out. This content is too simple to hear it.

@@OrientalPearl Yes---- the footage you showed brought back interesting memories. thank you for sharing.
I now live near Boston MA - but worked at a Japanese company for a couple of years. I ran quite a bit while living in Japan: saw tons of places. So thank you for showing the footage of the river with sakura. Brought memories.
Japan & the US - different worlds. I bet you miss home. Understandable. When I returned I had reverse culture shock
These are very very haunting times with Coronavirus. First time for all of us to live through a global pandemic. What I find to be extremely interesting is how both cultures handle this unprecedented event. You see in China and in Japan - gross under reporting of this trauma. Whereas in the USA - ONCE we woke up - it's FULL FORCE attack. Testing, social distancing, fighting to survive. When we wake up - we wake up.
HOWEVER - not only 4 weeks ago I went into a local trader joes with a mask. This was at the end of March. Literally no-one WORE masks in the stores (customers/workers)
Me??? Hell - I lived in Japan and know what it means to be considerate to others.
      Upon checkout @ Trader Joe's - I asked:
ME: to the cashier: Don't you want to wear a mask seeing 100s of people a day - you might catch something?
CASHIER: no - even if I got one I won't wear it.
ME: not even if they gave you one?
CASHIER: no, this might scare the other shoppers
ME: me thinking (damn - she must think I'm scaring customers -- ohhh whatever - heck in Japan they even put these on mannequins! )
ME: well - I am worried about my elderly parents - I don't want to pass anything to them.
CASHIER: I understand - everyone has their own reasons (so she has issues with me - oh well- you ignorant person)
ME: (damn - this person is in denial!)
Several weeks later - ALL cashiers are demanding hazard pay and may sue employers if they are put in harms way. Masks are on statues everywhere... I now see EVERYONE wearing masks....
If only I had a penny for the thoughts of that CASHIER.
The ability of the USA to pivot is one of the best in the world... Which is nice... However, Japanese culture is MUCH more considerate. But - their desire to save face might lead worse health outcomes. Chinese desire to not report more about this outbreak perhaps led to more spread.
Both good and bad across in every culture.
      ps... sorry for long note

I can see you are using music to establish new segments in the storyline...and don't think I did not recognize the crows in the end...Ha! The "timeless eerie tone" which, is a good use of beta sounds to direct our attention to the past. Oh, and because of these production capabilities of yours, you have an edge above Bald and Bankrupt and many other RUclips channels. I found this share house many years ago in a fluke event. I went to Ueno Park alone as a tourist and asked a girl to take my picture. She turned out to be Chinese and we became friends. She introduced me to this sharehouse and I moved over here from Beijing to live with them for a year in 2016. I came back again in 2019 and I'm still here today. Also, how did you manage to adjust to the hour difference from Michigan to Harbin (which is 12 hours ahead from Michigan)? Must have been hard. And finally, what an awesome tree garden. Now watching the video fully it was actually surreal. Random videos of your past, socializing with your roommates and talking to a Japanese snowman who not a typical snowman tells me that you are homesick. Are you homesick? I know the pandemic is making people nervous all over the world. Especially the change of wear. You are using facemask and cleaning more often but before you were comfortable going outside with no protection. I just hope you are well and healthy. Please be safe and try to stay positive.

Everyday conversation, I'm not sure why I find that so entertaining, but I do. Here's a question. In the videos you've posted of you at home, you seemed to have a different way of dressing. To me, when you're at home (in the U.S.), you seem to dress like every other American ....very casual. On the other hand, when you're in Japan or China you seem to dress-up more. Is that me or is that something that actually happens?

    • @OrientalPearl
      @OrientalPearl  4 года назад +6

Very good observation! The clothing is different here. People dress up a lot in Tokyo. I just try to fit in wherever I go. When I wear my Japanese clothes in America I get made fun of. My grandma says they are "foo foo" clothes. Whatever that means lol
