@@asil0072 For sure ☺️. This has always been one of my favorite nuggets of wisdom from Mandela. These types of videos perfectly capture the quote and seeing their faces light up is absolutely everything.
This guy's videos motivate me to learn Cantonese. I've been handing out PPE to 95% Cantonese speakers for the last 2 yrs here in San Francisco. I know how to say a few words like thanks you, you're welcome, good morning, etc. And they start laughing and give me a thumbs up all the time, but my goal is to learn how to have at least a small conversation. Chinese people get excited when you speak their language.
I loved this! Fun guy. I am a white American woman learning Egyptian Arabic. My accent is very good I am told & I love practicing with folks who don't expect a white girl talking to them like that! Great to share with others! ❤
It's actually quite sad. I see it in all of his videos. The people are so judgmental and want NOTHING to do with him. And then he speaks their language and they treat him well. It goes to show that most of these people don't give a fuck about the people who live in America, especially those who were born there. They don't attempt to assimilate and learn the language (English) and they give us trouble for it. Yet this guy shows them that with practice and a willingness to learn anyone can learn any language. But rather than take a life lesson out of it, they laugh and giggle for a bit. As soon as he leaves that room they go back to their old ways and continue to talk shit about everyone around them in their mother tongue. Why do we glorify these situations? He made a Chinese person, who looks like they hate everyone around them, smile and somehow this is considered amazing. He is non-intentionally exposing all of these people for how nasty minded they are. I expect that if I went to China I would learn the language, be nice to people and treat everyone properly. Instead they do the opposite.
@@marchfifth1754 Perhaps you may view it like that and I see your point. However, from my point, it's the other way round, minorities especially Asians often try to blend in to Western culture to fit. Especially younger generations because they will ostracized of they don't. How else so Asians have western names? It's so white ppl can say their names and remember it lol. The British heavily established that during their colonialism as they complete stripped any non British within their society of their ethnic identity. I could also point out how Asians are badly treated in America from Japanese concentration camps in 2nd world war to beating them up due to the pandemic. Therefore, from I see it, I don't see it as a surprise if they are just as prejudiced if they don't get with equal respect. But of course, I've seen how Chinese tourists and businesses behave in other countries in the media and it wasn't great. So I don't completely disagree with just that respect comes both ways and it's clear to them that this dude goes forward to meet them halfway which not a lot of westerners do (just expect to speak fluent English and understand them regardless of any country they are at 🙄)

Chinese afraid of language barrier from foreigner. especially something bad scenario happen for example like complaining about service attitude which won't happen in Chinese community due to different cultures. and also avoid some intentionally suppress & discrimination. u might disagree but it's true that Chinese are united and alert into people come in malicious. until they find out u speak Mandarin which remove language barrier. this is probably the reason that u find them not smiling into u :)
They probably get verbal abuse when they don't understand or misheard what an English/American person is trying to order. I think it's worth trying to learn another language or at least know common sentences for when going on holiday, people appreciate others that try.
I used to work in a REALLY small town where a lot of tourists passed through to get to Vegas, and I had a very sweet Korean family come in to my restaurant. They were having a hard time ordering in English and they were incredibly happy when I took their order in Korean. They left me a Korean won and the Korean equivalent of a dime. It was SO cool.

I lived in a foreign country for 15 years and this happened all the time except with people I hung around a lot who were used to hearing me speak their language. I think their mind is so fixated on their amazement that you speak their language that they aren't paying full attention to what you're saying.
Definitely takes a minute to register. Brain is expecting English or anything other than your language coming out of their mouth. For a second it sounds like they're speaking jibberish until it clicks. Lol
for sure. I speak two proficiently (Spanish and English) and one at a basic level (French.) There is all the benefit in the world for speaking at least one other language, and no benefit to only speaking one.
I could teach you Serbian if you want lol not a frequently used language but I guarantee that it's very unique. We read as we write there's no special way of saying it like in other languages like there's no combinations of ch or similar we make up for it with just one letter and we also wrote the same way we say it. I remember reading that it's one of the most complicated languages since 90% languages is letter combinations. I don't know about Asian languages though but I think they have letter combinations as well. The language has 2 different dialects one is called latin(latinica) and other chirilic(ćirilica), latin dialect is the same as normal English dialect just without w, x, y and q but it has some other ones like č, ć, đ, ž while chirilic is similar to Russian dialect (љ, њ, р, т, з, у, и, о, п, ш, д, ф, г, к, л, ч, ћ, џ, ц, в, б, н, м, ђ, ж)that's the basics though

When learning a new language your personality is like totally different in the language because you’re restricted by your knowledge, even if you’re pretty much fluent. There’s just so much to learn that it can be difficult to try to really be yourself in your second, third, or fourth language. When someone starts speaking to you in your native language, especially someone you didn’t expect to speak it (especially very well), it’s easier to open up and it’s also just like, exciting to meet someone else who’s taken the time to learn your language.

I like how whenever you start chatting up Chinese people in their native language they just completely open up and are so real! It's truly amazing to see :)
Most people are fairly reserved when speaking a second language. The first issue is that they are still mentally processing their intent through two languages which tends to soften the emotional context of what they are saying. My grandmother was very thoughtful, sweet, and caring in English. In Spanish, she could be fun, a bit crass, and judgemental being loose and off the cuff. The other issue is that many people are aware that they don't sound quick, witty, and educated in that second language. So they become a bit shy about using it.
In return, if a Chinese speaks fluent English to an American, that might not catch good open-up or smile as a reward. Why? Because Chinese people more friendly? Americans more rude?
I think this applies to people of all races. People feel more comfortable when speaking in their native tongues. Hopefully the same thing will happen when we learn how to communicate with aliens from another planet.

This guy's videos motivate me to learn Cantonese. I've been handing out PPE to 95% Cantonese speakers for the last 2 yrs here in San Francisco. I loved this! Fun guy. I am a white American woman learning Egyptian Arabic. My accent is very good I am told & I love practicing with folks who don't expect a white girl talking to them like that! Great to share with others! ❤
I liked how they were all grumpy until he started speaking their language and then everyone can’t stop smiling. It’s lovely ☺️

Well said.
Social skills helps to tone the dialect to those you are conversing with. You have reached their heart. Congratulations,

It's amazing to see people open up as soon as they hear their language. It's one of the best things to see. It's why one should learn as many languages as possible because the instant connection you can form with someone while speaking their language is something else!
Genenat And how long will that take?
Indeed it is wonderful to see
@@skylovermc2146 I'll answer. In my experience, even knowing a few simple words or phrases in someone's language can put them at ease and show them that you respect their culture and language. I'm fluent in Spanish now and get similar reactions to Xiaoma but even when I only knew a few words and practiced with strangers they would say how cute I was and how good I sounded and ask where I was learning; like it was a real pleasure for them to see a non-native care so much. Just go for it! Use what you know as you grow. 😄
French are like that ...else everyone things they’re not friendly. I think they just don’t link speaking English
I wish I could learn Chinese
