Hi Anming! I just want to say that I really love your channel and personality. It feels so real and genuine, I hope you keep it that way. Im from Malaysia, and its filled with a multi-cultural and multi-language community, so I can somewhat resonate with your switches between the 3 languages. In Malaysia, we even tend to mix a few languages in one sentence haha! Lastly, Im actually on exchange in Australia right now (not the best time), and its been tough since we're always cooped up at home. Watching your vidoes really inspire me as a person, not just from a language perspective, but the way your carry yourself. Your vidoes really makes my day and motivates me to improve my language game. Hopefully I can improve my Chinese (it's been a while) and my Japanese too! Thanks and I hope you stay safe and healthy! Cheers
This was a fun and inspiring video! ‘So my little cousin can answer these questions - AND she’s cute! 😂 Love it! I think you did a great job in the TV show considering you weren’t trained or experienced in presenting. That Chinese woman though was a real pro. Just look at how she held it together and refused to look flustered when there was some confusion going on. Kudos to her!
That Chinese woman is a big shot in Chinese TV. She is the anchor for the national news broadcasting through Beijing. Everyone knows her. Both of them memorized their lines in about 30 minutes. It took me 8 hours. ha ha
She had a Chinese Teaching School In Phoenix, AZ?? Her students are beneficial to the Chinese business when they grow up if they have the hearts to commit with that language.
This is great video to illustrate the benefits and joys of learning and using the another language. It also shows the down side of being a foreigner using the local language which can sometimes occur. Although most are happy that you are willing to make the effort to try to communicate in their language, even if it's not perfectly fluent. Thanks for the kick in the butt to redouble my efforts in learning Japanese, had some computer issues and just slacked off a bit. You reminded me that what you put into something determines what you will ultimately get out of it. I needed this to reorient my head.
thank you for sharing these experiences. I REALLY appreciate it. I would love to go to a language school. I live in arizona and it was cool seeing you out and about here!

Thanks so much! My mom and a lot of my family left Michigan and moved to Phoenix. I was born and raised in Michigan, but I go to Phoenix every year to visit family.
I'm not sure how I came upon your channel but I'm glad I did because I'm going into anthropology for undergrad in the fall and I'm really, really interested in East Asian cultures, and I hope that I can learn Chinese/Korean/Japanese (although I don't know a lick of any of them yet I only know South Asian languages ) and visit those countries like you :) Thank you for being a new inspiration haha
I'm glad that you found the channel too! I'm interested in learning Korean too. So many things to do.... so little time lol. I'm glad that these videos inspired you. Please stay in touch!
My niece and nephew didn't have to work hard to learn three languages. They grew up with their English mother (my sister) and Argentinian father in Paris. And they have four loving grandparents. Two grandparents only talk Spanish. My Mother only talks English, but my Father also has fluent French. Naturally my niece and nephew are trilingual because they need to talk to their friends and family. They are very lucky!
Firstly, I'm so proud your cousin can speak mandarin well. Secondly, I saw you become emcee in China, and have to introduce yourself by asking for,the face so shock..haha. 3rdly,I long time didn't saw cactus since last saw in National Geographic when I'm still young. 🦊🐭🐼 Great Video Anming , Did you vacation in Arizona Recently ? Ive been to Phonenix many times really nice place to visit . And also you looked fantastic on that Tv Show 😄
Oh my gosh I am in Tucson, it is so awesome that your little cousin is learning Chinese! I think some private schools have that here but it’s not full on bilingual like that. Too cool
That Chinese TV show was a live performance in front of the local Beijing government officials and CEOs of local companies. It was put on as a Labor Day performance.
This was great Anming! You ever thought about having your own TV travel show or just travel the world & teach/inform people about different countries/cultures cause you'd make a great host & narrator! Keep up the great work!!! ;)))
wow! That's it...the children were so great! Great to see behind the scenes of the TV special you were on... thanks for sharing....まだ日本にいるんですか。 Arizonaに行ったと思った~~^^ Great tips and advice by the way....
ありがとうございます。数年前から母はミシガン州からアリゾナ州に引っ越しました。Those kids are learning Chinese a lot earlier than me. We had Japanese classes at my high school... and I studied Spanish. lol
It is true. That's how I've been learning English. Now, I am about to learn Chinese the same way, I just hope I can manage improving my English, learning Chinese, and getting better at my job , finishing my degree, all at the same time.
Basically, you have to be OCD about everything you see and hear. I wrote down everything that I saw on signs after I moved to Asia. I also watched a lot of TV including Sponge Bob Squarepants in Mandarin. I never once stepped into any classroom until years later when I really wanted to know what my level is which made the people at the university astonished that I was sitting in an intermediate class. You really don't see immediate rewards when learning languages. I guess that's why most people seem to give up after a short time.
WOW...I am absolutely speechless and surprised. 😮😮😮. In many of the States in the US, teachers usually teaches Spanish, not Mandarin, to their students, as a second language. It’s about damn time schools in America are starting to teach our language and culture to non Asians. Kudos and respect to Phoenix for actually teaching Mandarin to kids. And, kudos to your 6 year old cousin. Her Mandarin is pretty good. 👏👏👏
This is especially strange in Arizona, because most schools teach Spanish. But people have been telling me in the comments section that there are lots of bilingual Chinese schools in California. I think it's pretty cool too.
@@OrientalPearl - Yeah. I’m not surprised about most schools in Arizona teaching their students Spanish, because in Arizona there are more native speaking Spanish people living in Arizona than say native speaking Chinese people. And, as for the state of California, it’s really obvious that many schools in the state, teaches their students Mandarin. Because, they have a really large Asian population there. Lol
That's amazing you were able to get on a Chinese TV show! How did you apply for it? What was your role in the TV show? How long have you been studying Chinese up until that time you went on the TV show?
I didn't apply. They came to our English school looking for foreigners that could speak Chinese. They originally wanted me to sing, but then said I could be a co-host. I started studying Chinese and living in China in 2012. The show was in 2016.
I'm learning Japanese and at the moment learning katakana now I have done the hiragana. Also kanji and writing them. It is hard, especially things like counting! I welcome all your helpful ideas thank you!!
I used to go to a Mandarin school back then, but I left the Mandarin program because it was too hard and I wasn't learning very much. However this year I've started learning again!
Never give up! You can always try and try again. I will try to get better at the violin too. Just because I failed the first time, doesn't mean I will never be able to do it.
On TV you get that serious look. :-) Arizona is just too hot for me after living near the SoCal coast for most of my long life. Although I must say a new level of respect is found for you after viewing this video. I'm a reader and haven't owned a TV for > 30 years. We must stay active, that does include the brain. Peace to you Anming.
You are amazing and inspiring and this is off topic but just with those few notes @5:38 - 5:42 I recognize one of my favorites pieces by TSFH "Skyworld" and I'm morally obligated to state this so others can listen to that great album and song. That said, now I've got more motivation than ever to learn Chinese and Japanese!! I must aspire to that great burn at 7:10, "You'll get it eventually." XD
That guy was rude but on the bright side your hair looked amazing. I'm very jealous of those kids early start in Arizona and I hope they all keep it up in the future. Looks like a great program.
He was having an off day that night. He was really super nervous and kept forgetting lines. I don't know why. He should be used to it after 30 years on TV. I'm jealous of those kids in Arizona too. My school never had that.
You're subscribers are growing rapidly , are they not Anming ? This Shelter in Place here in Los Angeles is taking its toll . We will keep fighting and we will keep watching your videos !!
Yeah, it was growing extremely fast at the end of February at 700-1,000 new subs a day. It has slowed down a bit to 200-500 new subs per day. But it's still growing quite fast and will grow really rapidly again when I can start doing a few reaction videos (maybe May). Thanks for watching and glad to hear you are not giving up! Better days are on the horizon.
I love your videos. First thing I recognized seeing you was your awesome smile. Your canine teeth are a little bit longer and it gives you an interesting look. Kinda like a lionesse. Beautiful, or kawai. Most people from america have that all too white, artficial looking teeth. Like out of a catalogue. I like the more natural people, without tons of make up. Greetin s from Germany!👋👋
In my humble (North American) opinion, it's ok to have relations with people where the major motivation is improving language skills - on the conditions that a) you candidly express your wish to soak up their lingo, and b) you really do enjoy each other's company. What would be objectionable, imho, would be faking friendship when there is none. No one wants to be discarded when they cease to be useful!
I agree with you. I've had some classmates in China that clearly just wanted to hang out with me and walk with me because they wanted free English lessons. That never feels very good.
I say it’s very close because it’s the perspective of a ‘native’ per say since you’re indulged in it all day everyday and speak the language. I’m a bit jealous lol
Actually, I don't study Chinese or Japanese, I'm studying English, but your videos were so helpful to improve my ear skill, I hope to continue watching you... but your advices it's working with any language, thanks.
She is so cute. This footage was from a year ago, so I'm sure that she learned a lot more Chinese since then. I can't wait to go back and see what she learned.
How much did language school cost when you learnt Japanese. I really want to learn Japanese in Japan but the costs are so high. Keep up the great work Anming! Love from the UK
Language school in Tokyo was $500 (48,000 yen) per month for 15 hours of classes M-F. The housing costs here and food costs will vary a lot with your lifestyle and how far away from the city you are willing to live. If you live in a share house, the costs can be kept really low. You could find a cheaper school and housing in other cities, but Tokyo has its charms.
Kids learn really naturally. When Chinese kids learn Chinese they don't have to focus on the tones as much as us adult learners do. My cousin might not be Chinese, but she's learning in kind of the same way as Chinese kids do at school.
The school district I work for has a Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program, as well as a few surrounding school districts, starting from Transitional Kindergarten. I'm trying to teach my old brain some Japanese. I'm glad that you reiterated that it's hard work. You're right! And even more so when you're not immersed in an environment that uses the target language.
4:40 the male actor standing next to you was a leading role from 我爱我家 which I used to watch every day when I was little 😂 the female anchor is not a very famous one in China atm but I still remember she used to host a TV program named 三星智力快车 which I used to watch when I was in secondary school (a weekly contest for high school students that was sponsored by Samsung) 😂😂 and I also find your Chinese pronunciation is even better than then - they should invite you back to the stage given you are now a Senior 中国通 😄
I live in Phoenix and had no idea there were schools like that! That’s amazing, I’m so glad children here are being given those opportunities. I wish I would have started learning foreign languages so much earlier in life. I learned Spanish passively growing up here just by being exposed to so much Mexican culture, but forgot so much of it after not using it. And now only started taking studying other languages seriously a few years ago, I turn 30 soon and it seems to get harder to keep up the older I get lol
I started learning Spanish in Middle school, but I never took it very seriously or got very good at it. Don't worry, I taught people in their 80s English. Don't let yourself believe it's too late to learn.
Oriental Pearl Going on a couple years of Korean learning now and I’m low intermediate at the moment t so I’m getting there :) I’d like to start on Japanese again at some point since the grammar is so dang similar to korean it would seem like a travesty not to learn both haha. Thanks for the encouragement! It can get frustrating at points but learning is really so addicting. One step at a time :)
There is an illusion that getting into the local community can make someone master a language without serious practising. but as you suggested, you have put a huge amount of time ``behind the scene'' on collecting phrases, vocabularies and revising ..there is no shortcut for mastering a new language but consistent commitment.
Chinese here, I personally think there is a translation wrong with what the host was saying by"zi ji jie shao ba", which was translated as "introduce yourself" by this lady, and this makes the host sound like he was giving an order while the truth is if you have a knowledge of Chinese grammars, you would simply notice there is a translation miss of the line. The last word of the line "ba" works to express a speaker's mood of uncertainty or suggestion without real meaning. That is why I believe "you d better do a self-introduction" that is a more proper way of translation for the above line.
Ok, no problem. I have knowledge of Chinese grammar. I wrote the subtitles. It just seemed funny that he said that after Chun ni said: 我想隆重地介绍我的大棒..." and then goes to me the English teacher 自己介绍吧。Maybe I'm being too hard on Mr. Yang. He was really nervous that night for some reason.
I feel like “you’d better do a self introduction” feels more like an order in English than a simple “introduce yourself” ... what about something like “care to introduce yourself?” or something similar? I don’t know Chinese so I’m only saying this based off of how it comes off in English when written, just to me personally.
Hannah B He was a little nervous that night. You can see it when he ran up on stage. I’m sure he didn’t try to be unkind. It came off a little strange though when he said it. But that was just the rehearsal. None of that was even in the show,
Oriental Pearl yeah it didn’t seem too bad to me, it looked like everyone was a bit nervous! I was just going off of what OP here was saying about the translation since I really have no clue about Chinese lol, only how I feel things come across in English. Based on how you translated what he said, I didn’t think it sounded bad, just a bit straight forward and blunt due to nerves or any other kinds of issues that can come up on big productions like that
Thanks so much! There will be more Toby scenes when I get back to China. Right now he can't return to Japan and I can't return to China, so we are just using Skype to talk until I can go back. I want to do a lot of videos about the huge Japanese community in Shanghai.
oh cool im from Arizona northern AZ my mother in law is Thai we used to get a lot of people who speak Chinese coming to the Thai restaurant she and her friend run so i wanted to try and use that as an opportunity to practice unfortunately thanks to the issue we all know and love that dried up but its starting to slowly pick back up i cant wait to start practicing.
that's cool AZ is offering that. When I was in grade school we took spanish in the 3rd grade (one year) and I didn't get a chance to learn another language until high school when I took german for 2 yrs. My daughter didn't take any language classes. I guess it wasn't a priority here in Oregon.
Chinese101 is good. It has everything to learn the language. I love to use the record mode and to compare my voice with the native pronunciation and check the wave form of it. English not my first language.

Your Mandarin pronunciation is wow.... perfect! I am also learning both languages and I live in Japan. You have inspired me a lot!
Cheers
Wow, I'm glad that you were in Australia before the country locked the boarder.
@@OrientalPearl yeah, hopefully things get better soon so I can experience Australia lol
Glad to see you are well, sending love and best wishes to you from the UK, stay safe xx
Thank you! I'm going through old video footage to put these together now. Good thing I have a ton of old footage.
I live in Tucson, Arizona and many people like to learn Chinese here too.
Me too! But I am learning Japanese.
Good! That's the most important message of this video. The more you put into learning, the more you get out of it.
thank you for sharing these experiences. I REALLY appreciate it. I would love to go to a language school. I live in arizona and it was cool seeing you out and about here!
Love this VLOG..!!! Especially, your funny sound effects... LOL..!!! 😂😂😂 Might I add, you look absolutely stunning in that golden dress... It suits you well...
Thanks so much! Sometimes the sounds effects help convey the mood better. Too bad they didn't let me keep the dress.
You go Girl, AWESOME !!!!
I had no idea you were from Phoenix! I'm also from Phoenix and I recently discovered your channel lately. Your positive attitude is contagious. I'm hoping to work in Japan in September, but I'm anxiously waiting to see how this coronavirus situation ends up.
Thanks so much! My mom and a lot of my family left Michigan and moved to Phoenix. I was born and raised in Michigan, but I go to Phoenix every year to visit family.
Really good video. I like your positive attitude, that's what brought me to your channel. Never give up!
So glad to hear that! Everyone could use a little more optimism nowadays.
Now I know why you are so fluent in all these languages... probably you are truly the inspiration that "what doesn't kill you makes you strong"!!
Thanks so much. I spend a lot of time studying.
How a beautiful thank you for sharing this lovely msg ❤️
Thanks! Anyone can study anywhere. This might give hope to people who think they need to move far away to study a language.
Firstly, I'm so proud your cousin can speak mandarin well.
Secondly, I saw you become emcee in China, and have to introduce yourself by asking for,the face so shock..haha.
3rdly,I long time didn't saw cactus since last saw in National Geographic when I'm still young.
Finally you did well in Violin too, nice to see your RUclips...very fun and funny.
But hopefully you can put some special words subtitle ...make more clear....may be tire for typing.Hope to see your more coming video...Anming
Yes, it was very hard to add subtitles to this footage. It's my least favorite part of making videos. And I have no subtitle making software.
Nothing replaces being there in the country of the language you want to learn.
🦊🐭🐼 Great Video Anming , Did you vacation in Arizona Recently ?
Ive been to Phonenix many times really nice place to visit . And also you looked fantastic on that Tv Show 😄
This Arizona footage was from last year. I have family in both Michigan and Arizona, so I went back to spend a month in each place.
Oh my gosh I am in Tucson, it is so awesome that your little cousin is learning Chinese! I think some private schools have that here but it’s not full on bilingual like that. Too cool
I'm really proud of her. I can't want to go back and see how much progress she has made.
Wow! That was awesome! What was the tv thing about anyway?? You are so amazing that you were even able to do that. Quite an accomplishment
Keep up the great work!!! ;)))
That would be cool. Let's see what kinds of opportunities there are when I get back to China.
@@OrientalPearl Yes, go for it, you can do it you're so talented & I know you'll make it fun!!!
We had Japanese classes at my high school... and I studied Spanish. lol
@@OrientalPearl lol
Wow, that is one of the best videos on your channel and you look so beautiful! 👍
I’m glad you went back and watched it.
Really Weldon. Love to watch your videos. Hope you come to london England one day. There is a chines town in central london too :-)
I had the chance to visit London in 2016, I missed the Chinatown. Now I have a reason to go right back! lol
That's wonderful performance by the children singing Mandarin song 😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏
Dam their houses are literally built in the desert !
That's Phoenix! It's really hot there right now.
The background music is from Bali!
Lol
Great work , & great video.
I teach Chinese, as my second job
LOL the suitcase!! That's fantastic!
On TV you get that serious look. :-)
Arizona is just too hot for me after living near the SoCal coast for most of my long life.
Although I must say a new level of respect is found for you after viewing this video.
I'm a reader and haven't owned a TV for > 30 years. We must stay active, that does include the brain.
Peace to you Anming.
Wow your cousin's school is very special and is offering her such a wonderful opportunity to learn a second language!
I think so too. She's going to be better than me soon. lol
Thanks for your learning advice.👍
Thanks for the advice in learning a new language ! I’m learning Hebrew and you give good advice on learning! תודה רבה /Thank you very much !
That is a really cool language to learn! I'm glad that you watched to the very end to get those tips. You can apply that to any language.
The music that plays in the beginning was so nice as an intro haha
Thanks. I spend a lot of time searching for music.
@@OrientalPearl It shows your appreciation and dedication to a different society! Thank you for sharing with us all!
You are my american passion 🇺🇸😍❤
That guy was rude but on the bright side your hair looked amazing. I'm very jealous of those kids early start in Arizona and I hope they all keep it up in the future. Looks like a great program.
He was having an off day that night. He was really super nervous and kept forgetting lines. I don't know why. He should be used to it after 30 years on TV. I'm jealous of those kids in Arizona too. My school never had that.
@@OrientalPearl Maybe he'd just never worked with a foreigner before? Definitely seems weird with 30 years of experience though.
@@OrientalPearl
You should have charged people like that
恭喜撒花!相信你以后的咖位会越来越大的!Don't be discouraged and keep doing what you do!
谢谢,希望如此。
You’re videos are so informal!!
That's what I was going for. I figured I can't make a video better than National Geographic can, so why pretend to be them.
I heard that there are many people watching this to study English. That's great! I'm an English teacher. I want to help.
Your English is fine
this is about the dopest thing i have ever seen...
San Francisco public schools offers both Cantonese and Mandarin immersion schools for elementary students.
That's awesome!
Wow, Chinese/English bilingual K-12 in Phoenix??? Fascinating! Great opportunities there, far-sighted. Your cousin is adorable😍🤗💚🐦💚
Oriental Pearl, I haven’t come across it in your videos yet, so can you please tell me which Japanese school you attended in Tokyo?
How did your cousin tackle the tones? I always thought they were one of the hardest parts of Mandarin
Kids learn really naturally. When Chinese kids learn Chinese they don't have to focus on the tones as much as us adult learners do. My cousin might not be Chinese, but she's learning in kind of the same way as Chinese kids do at school.
很惊讶,视频开始这些小朋友唱的那首儿歌居然也是我女儿幼儿园在教的,完全同步国内啊,他们太可爱太棒了。
哇塞,有意思。美国和中国小朋友同声唱歌!
That's cool. It seems that most people watching these videos are interested in Japanese. I will be doing some more Japanese language videos.
@@OrientalPearl Looking forward to it! I know you said you took Chinese lessons. Did you take Japanese lessons as well? What about the JLPT exams?
4:40 the male actor standing next to you was a leading role from 我爱我家 which I used to watch every day when I was little 😂 the female anchor is not a very famous one in China atm but I still remember she used to host a TV program named 三星智力快车 which I used to watch when I was in secondary school (a weekly contest for high school students that was sponsored by Samsung) 😂😂 and I also find your Chinese pronunciation is even better than then - they should invite you back to the stage given you are now a Senior 中国通 😄
PS: i like your story with Toby 30yo hahaha 😄可愛いねー❣️
I would probably go back if they invited me to. That's cool that you recognized the hosts on the show!
You're a real show girl ... wow. 🤗
There is an illusion that getting into the local community can make someone master a language without serious practising. but as you suggested, you have put a huge amount of time ``behind the scene'' on collecting phrases, vocabularies and revising ..there is no shortcut for mastering a new language but consistent commitment.
You're right. There is no shortcut. Hard work is a must.
@@OrientalPearl 我的搭档
Based on how you translated what he said, I didn’t think it sounded bad, just a bit straight forward and blunt due to nerves or any other kinds of issues that can come up on big productions like that
Wow..I'm in love.
YAY TOBY Reference! Still watching, still a huge Anming Fan! :D
over 18K subs! WOOT WOOT!
My mom and many family members are living in Phoenix.
your fantastic , very genuine
You're my inspiration
The mama song is really good! If I don't look at it while listening I might think it's a kindergarten in China!
Yeah, I thought their pronunciation was really good too.
The background music at the beginning of this video, is it Balinese gamelan? Btw, plenty of Chinese, Japanese, Australian, and Americans in Bali 😊
I just picked it because it sounded cool.
@@OrientalPearl Bali is cool 😊
I am trading a Like on your video for your 5 tips for language learning. Keep it up, I am a fan.
Awesome, thank you! I will be sure to give more tips in future videos.
that's cool AZ is offering that. When I was in grade school we took spanish in the 3rd grade (one year) and I didn't get a chance to learn another language until high school when I took german for 2 yrs. My daughter didn't take any language classes. I guess it wasn't a priority here in Oregon.
I took Spanish too! It looks like Chinese classes are popping up all over the US now.
Chinese101 is good. It has everything to learn the language. I love to use the record mode and to compare my voice with the native pronunciation and check the wave form of it. English not my first language.
Wow, I haven't used that feature before, but that sounds really cool.
