American Speaks Chinese Befriends Japanese Chinatown: Speaking Fluent Chinese in Tokyo Japan
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- I often walk around Ikebukuro in Tokyo, Japan listening in on the conversations of Chinese people around me. They have a sense of security in Japan knowing that the locals don't understand their language. Little do they know that there is a rising number of Japanese and American people learning to speak fluent Chinese. Today, I revisited Chinatown and went to eat some delicious Chinese street food. People were quite shocked when a Chinese-speaking American walked in to chat. It's fun to get these big reactions by acting completely normal.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

Please, no more mask comments on my old videos. There were barely any corona cases in Tokyo at the time of filming this. Only half of Japanese people were wearing masks outside in early March. Only Chinese immigrants were all wearing them all the time so this video gives you a false sense of the environment in Tokyo at that time. The corona situation has changed a lot now and I wear a mask on camera, when I used to take it off on camera before. Please be aware that this was filmed long before things got serious. Context is key. -Anming
Your chinese is so good ...very very standard
I am from The Netherlands and was in Japan in 1978 for my apprenticeship. At that time it was already common to wear a mask if you have cold. I had some hay fever, I was sneezing and someone asked me whether I should wear a mask.
stay safe
美國人哪有這麼漂亮,你在美國的身材算是太瘦了,我美國同事都是胖的,屁股也超大,在德州屁股大有肉是很美的。
I had spent 6 months in China . I was one day I was looking for foreigners to speak English..Everyone I came across same reaction. 😂😂😂
You make friends with people so easily, really admire you, not everyone is able to do it. Cheers
I used to be very shy. Teaching English helped improve my social skills a lot!
Ditto! I'm an introvert by nature. I like this channel for many reasons and it's nice to see how the other half lives and interacts..
When you can speak another language, you open a door to another world.
And when you can speak their language with their accent perfectly... You stole their hearth ..
My native language is Serbian but i am fluent in English. Also know Italian and German and i know little, Japanese language.
But yes, that statement is true not just in communication with people but also for example searching over google, much more data is in English then in Serbian.
I'm brazilian. My life changed completely ever since I learned fluent english. So much access to new cultures, books and interesting people. Currently studying japanese, and I'm having just as much fun opening this door as I did with english. I can see why polyglots just keep learning. The more someone is different from us, the more we can learn from them. So learning a new language is a great way to find more people.
@@igormalusevic *than , sorry grammar nazi
For real. I speak Japanese and english. UwU
To be fluent in two very difficult languages, incredible.
Chinese and English?
gerard burton I guess it depends on how you differentiate between “fluent” vs “conversational”
@@gaijinhakase1575 to be fluent is to be conversational, fluency is nothing less than just having the enough knowledge to communicate naturally with natives and non-natives
@@badmharya no, that’s called “conversational” which is not “fluent”. The order is conversational -> fluent -> native
@@gaijinhakase1575 "Conversational" is a BS classification which cant even really be quantified. Its what the RUclips Polyglots use to claim they know a language much better than they do. Theyd likely fail a B1 test in the languages they claim to be "conversational" in, and A2 is still beginner level.
All the women serving you were lovely, I felt genuine warmth there and they wanted to converse too which is not always the case.
Once again you are a star, many of us are watching your clips and thinking bloody heck, I would not be able to start up a chat with an English speaker with such effortless charm.
I wasn't good at chatting with people until I became an English teacher. It really helped me gain better social skills.
@@OrientalPearl Any tips on that then? For me personally, Starting and continuing a conversation is the hard part. I can be social at work with customers, but that's mostly because they're forced to interact with me. But by myself, I'm all clammed up in my own shell.
Naritori Hello!! I’m a native speaker of American English and I learned to speak Spanish fluently. I always tried to begin conversations with people in public. I would start by positioning myself in a situation that would make sense to speak with them. For example, if they were looking at canned vegetables, I would also look and then ask a question, just like Oriental Pearl did in this video! My next recommendation is that you have a “speech” prepared in the language you want to practice. What I mean by “speech” is a few sentences you can tell about yourself immediately that you memorize and it is what you begin the conversation with after saying hello. For example, “My name is Naritori and I hope you don’t mind if I talk in English with you. I am learning English and I enjoy it. I need to practice more.” That way, people know they should not speak too fast and it will not seem weird if you do not understand them right away. You can try to control the conversation by being the person to ask most of the questions, like Oriental Pearl. Good questions like: What is your name? Where are you from? Do you speak other languages? How old are you? (Be careful about this question! I would t ask someone who is an elder but someone who appears more your age, or maybe don’t ask it at all.) I hope this helps a little bit!
at 6:36, the girl jumping around and clapping her hands because they gave the answer away, had me rolling LOLLLLL
that women was so cute, all the people there seemed really nice
Please excuse the spelling mistakes in the subtitles. I tried to get this video out fast and stayed up until 4 am. And the software doesn't have spell check. It's grueling awful work to do the subtitles. It takes 3 or 4 hours and it's the worst part of making the video. Any recommendations for simple subtitle software? Also, I hope everyone is learning a little bit about China and Japan in each video. I love these countries very much and purposefully add a little bit of info along with the jokes. I hope you have the chance to come to Tokyo. It’s such an international city. -Anming
Been to Tokyo. Very CLEAN city. They say Singapore is clean, but I've been there. Japan is the CLEANEST of all the 25+ countries that I've been to.

Oriental Pearl I took mandarin for two semesters and love picking out words I recognize 🥰🥰... I live in Kansas and have nobody to practice with :( the Chinese students at my university really don’t want to hang out with me so I’m slowly forgetting all that I leaned ... I’m not sure if they don’t like us or if they are scared of us or what it is all I know is they don’t want to have anything to do with me lol
I feel like I'm running out of oxygen just listening to the amount spoken lol.
Try doing the subtitles. ha!
@@OrientalPearl Hah!!!
I’ve been working really hard to get these videos out fast for you. I stayed up until 4 am last night to make this video and post it. I know a lot of the world can’t go out and do much nowadays because of the virus. I only go out once a day to eat now. I hope these videos entertain you while you are stuck at home.
Sorry about the spelling mistakes. Sometimes doing a video really fast sacrifices a little bit of the quality.
Oriental Pearl it’s not so bad in the UK at the mo only the people who have been to Italy or China or one of the other restricted countries are having to self isolate for two weeks. The government are having COBRA meetings (emergency) meetings almost every day and the spring budget (government spending plan) was released yesterday. They said they would allocate 3 billion GBP (I think it was 3) to helping healthcare and sick pay. The next 2 weeks will be the worse as that’s when they think it will reach its peak here. Thank you for your vids and stay safe and well. Lots of love from Leeds, Yorkshire.
321alison That still sounds really serious though. I have been watching the news about the situation in Europe. It escalated really fast. I hope the UK is in a safer position because like Japan it’s an island and it’s easier to isolate itself.
It’s gotten bad here in Norway, but I usually spend most of my life indoors anyway because I’m sick. I really enjoy your videos - they brighten up my day!

It is japanese and chinese politeness to be humble.
You captivated those ladies more with your charm, natural humility and authenticity more than your language skills! That's what sets you apart from others doing videos like this. You take us along for your experiences which is very pleasant. When you get back to the states you really need to setup a "Meet Anming" event!
That would be cool. I usually travel around Arizona and Michigan. I have family in both places.
@@OrientalPearl And I must add you'd be considered beautiful in any country, including USA.
She's obviously in search of the mysterious toilet roll.
It's with the mysterious hand sanitizer.😷
I love how you turn a negative into a positive, it’s inspired me to do the same, that way there’s no disappointments! We can enjoy what life throws at us! Thame care, good to see you still ok xx
That's right! Attitude is key.
I’ve been learning Japanese this past year, and you’ve inspired me to add Chinese to my studies! I’m also American x3 I’m from Texas. Tysm for your content. This has been my dream, to travel and communicate with those in a culture so incredibly different from my own. To share culture x) thank you, again
I am also learning Japanese, if you don't have any problem shall we learn together...
Wow same!!! I've been studying Japanese for a couple of months and am taking Chinese classes! And in Texas too 🤭😂
This video reminds me of myself quite a lot. A Chinese student who studies in Sweden but speaks English with a group of international students. The funny part is, usually, here I ask people for guessing my age, instead of my nationality and they always got wrong. XD. Although no doubt what you are doing is surely the next level. Really really impressive seeing you speaking both Chinese and Japanese so well! Really like what you are doing, please keep it up!
Seems all the Chinese and Japanese people you meet are very kind and friendly, and I love that in people :)
i love it when people can speak multiple langauges it allows closer interactions.
12:46 “I really don’t like attention... said no RUclipsr ever!!!” Haha 😂! At least you recognize that but stay humble! Great video as always!!! United States 🇺🇸, China 🇨🇳, Japan 🇯🇵 Give yourself credit goodlookin!!!
She seems to be getting prettier in every video.
Why do I think the same thing! I agree and i dont mean this in a rude manner. Anyways love the videos and wish one day I can furthef improve my Chinese.
that's because we are getting to know her better
It's all about lighting. The lighting is quite bad when it's cloudy like the last video. In some of the others it was too sunny and I kept squinting into the camera. This day was not too bright and not too dark. Perfect combination!

That's a good point. I am experimenting with subtitles and improving them in newer videos. Please check those new videos out and see if the subtitles are easier to read.
Shes the best speaker I've seen so far, alot of videos people only speak the very basics
Ha ha, this is nothing. I'm going to show you guys some really complex stuff in the near future. Chinese debating!
For some reason I enjoy these videos of Americans that speak Chinese or Japanese and there's quite a few of them at this point. However I really like your personality and the way you make conversation and you're probably my new favorite at this point. Looking forward for videos to come.
Thank you so much! I hope to add something unique to the bunch.
The first seller seems like a fun person
I'm loving these vids my sister, you are literally my hero and giving me so much courage to study chinese! Stay safe and well sweets.
I'm so glad to hear that! I got angry while learning Chinese many times. It's a tough battle, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I have watched many utubers so far telling they can speak like 10,11,12,13.... language but all their Chinese are not good . So,you are the first one am satisfied with .加油 !
I love China Yes! So happy. I thought I was the only one watching many of those feeling like.... hmmm. Anyway, I haven’t showed you anything difficult yet. I’ll be breaking out the academic Chinese soon. Keep watching!
I have seen the same thing hahaha. From those RUclipsrs, I think I’ve learned to limit myself to just a few languages and get truly good at them.
@@30803080308030803081 yes that's more better than knowing many languages
What a nice change from other RUclipsrs and their channels! It's so much fun and relaxing to watch!
I'm glad that this channel stands out. If we all do the same thing it's going to be really boring for you.
@@OrientalPearl Nice to watch a channel with real people being themselves. That's never boring! You also bring out the best in people. Keep up the good work!
Any foreigner: *could speak 3 sentences*
Native speakers: YOUR *language* IS BETTER THAN MINE
This is true at any level, beginner to advanced... same reaction lol
An average Indian know maximum 5 to 6 languages & minimum 3 languages...
You’re having fun, enjoying yourself, learning, and also expanding other people’s knowledge of other people. That’s what breaks down walls and prejudices! I appreciate that you go out of your way to learn and make friends.
Encountering a foreigner in a land far away from home who actually speaks the same language is always a delightful surprise.
Another accomplished mission!...
She was so cool. I love interacting with people like her! Wish there were more in the world, so open. I think it shows, that they don't expect Americans to be so cultural, which saddens me :(
You are a national treasure for the states. Thanks for representing us so well
Thank you so much! I was tired of people that set a bad example on RUclips. I decided to get in here and do some damage control. lol
this is late, but you are a treasure for japan and the US. i am surprised you havent been approached by the government(s)--both of them.
Please...Enjoy your gift. Your Chinese is amazing and it is such a joy to watch!!!!
Thank you so much. There will be a new video in 12 hours.
“I’m not considered to be that pretty in my country” omg lol she’s awesome that made me laugh.
Yeah, it's good that you've made peace with the constant questions about your Chinese. That's never going to end! So making the best of it is a good thing.

For all the nerds out there (I was one myself) - watch Anming's videos carefully. She skillfully approaches people in the right context, the right environment, and knows exactly when to break off the conversation. This is a high level of social intelligence that you can only learn from experience. Don't be afraid - learn, learn, learn!
I can watch these videos so many times, i dont know but it is so funny to see the reaction on people, and it is so fun to see when people around you try to pretend they dont look and listen to you 😄
I will make another one today.
Could you possibly put the captions in different colors? Makes it a bit easier to follow along. Great video 👍
Good advice. I need real subtitle software. It's painful to make all of these with the current software.
I'm glad you are starting to enjoy the attention! You obviously bring a lot of Chinese speakers joy when you speak to them, so it's good that now you are finally enjoying it too! And I love watching your videos as a way to help me practice my Chinese.

"I'm not considered to be that pretty in my country" I think you're absolutely stunning!
