- Today I went into Chinese Latino restaurants and ordered in Chinese and Spanish simultaneously. They were totally shocked! This is a rare type of restaurant in NYC combining cuisine from both China and Latin America, run by Chinese people who immigrated to or grew up in Spanish-speaking countries. They speak fluent Spanish, English, and usually Cantonese or Mandarin as well. There used to be a strong Cuban Chinese restaurant scene in NYC, but those restaurants are almost nonexistent now -- however, there are still several other Chinese Latino restaurants in NYC. The ones I visited include:

It's unbelievable how decent his Spanish is after just a few months
Once you learn one or two 2nd languages, it is easy to pick up another one. It is learning your second language that is the hardest. When I took Chinese, it was the girl who knew 11 languages that did the best. Spanish happens to be my second language. Chinese was the third one. I can't say I am fluent in either. I am impressed.

@@timroden6617 I hope that's true because I'd like to learn Mandarin. Spanish is my mother tongue, and even if he struggles here and there I'm still impressed. Spanish can be a tricky language, especially nouns and grammatical genders
Chinese is tricky on the vocabulary and pronunciation. Grammer is simple. The is no tenses.

Specifically the one where he orders a at a drive through. The lady didn't know he wasn't Chinese.

When I was at UCLA back in the '80s, I met a Chinese girl whose family migrated to Nicaragua a couple of generations ago and then later came to the United States. She invited me over to her home for a family party and it was very strange seeing all these Chinese people speaking Spanish to each other. Growing up, I was always used to being around Chinese people speaking Chinese at parties, so it was a very surreal experience.
@C.O. My gf was born and raised in an Orthodox Jewish community in Mexico City (her grandparents immigrated to Mexico came from Syria, Turkey and Poland). One of her best friends in NYC is Panamanian Chinese, and naturally, their common language is Spanish. But she gets "You don't look Mexican" and "How can you be Mexican?" all the time and her Chinese-Panamanian friend also gets "You can't be from Panama!" In New York especially, there is even more of a fixed idea of what a Mexican is "supposed" to look like, because the majority of Mexicans in the NYC area are from Puebla state and most people from there are mestizos with very obvious indigenous looks and short. Even they are sometimes incredulous that she is Mexican, because they tend to come from very small villages and often don't know much about the diversity of their own country, it seems. Like, being Jewish and Mexican seems a contradiction to them as much as it is to the dumb Americans.
I think on West Coast and in Southwest, more Anglos might know that Mexicans come in different sizes and hues. In NYC they have only been migrating here in large numbers since the 1990s, and like 75% come from Puebla
Im use to people speaking chinese to me mainly because I can listen and understand English but I can barely talk in it.

Seriously, it's frustrating when native English speakers think I'm dumb cause I have a slight accent and forget some common words but knowing 3 languages can be a bit difficult. I forget a word of one of them but remember the same word on the other two :/

@Robert Mustain I believe is that they don't take you seriously or when you share your opinion or thoughts, it doesn't have the same effect as a native speaker speaking their mind. I've experienced it in meetings and when I voice out my own thoughts, some people have a hard time keeping patient and would often dismiss or pass on the next. I had to work hard to improve my accent to a more native sounding accent(Standard American) and Ive noticed a stark difference and I started noticing that i'm more "heard". Idk if that makes sense sorry lol

I spent 6 years in US public schools learning Spanish and he steps in with two months of experience and has better spanish than most people at my entire school including myself.

You can always change it... There are lot's of free online courses. My wife learned webdesign, she is japanese and english teacher here in Japan, I am Brazillan and I am learning web marketing in the quarentine. We are doing it for 5 or 6 weeks and we are opening a new business from home already in the next two months. The hard part is start hahaha, after that it just goes. The life flies by like a jet airplane, the good news is that you are the captain! :)

He has a passion for linguistics. When you’re passionate about something it makes it easier to learn. Not taking away from the time and work he puts in to learning all of these languages and dialects. It’s amazing. I love this dude. He’s bringing people together.

Yeah, I never had a passion for language despite taking Spanish classes for 4 years in middle/high school. I didn't appreciate it until after the fact and 100% regret not taking it more seriously. It's also one of those things where you need to force yourself to immerse into the culture and practice it. If you're not using it on a daily language, you'll lose the talent really fast.
I type 1000x more than I write with a pen, and in my 30's I've noticed that my writing skills have gone to absolute shit. I dread anytime I have to fill out basic paperwork because my penmanship is embarrassing.

True, although two are because of her culture and the third is because she moved to another country, whereas he is in his "native" country. Context is important :)
Its still very impressive, but its very common to see some immigrants speak multiple languages because they basically had to, to live in whichever country they moved to. Its very rare for someone to approach you in THEIR native country and speak your native language especially if they are another race and or your native language is mainly only in one country, like chinese.
All Asians speak at least 3 languages I think..

Dude just had a full conversation in 3 different languages without missing a beat in between. Lol. That was freakin amazing. I knew there were Chinese Latinos, but actually seeing it happen in a restaurant of all places...WOW this blows my mind. It makes me even more motivated to learn both Spanish and Mandarin.
This is so cute. It goes to show how much people appreciate it when you take the time to learn their language and engage with them.
Instead for most of us, particularly English speaking natives(I'm one of them), we have a slight sense of arrogance not wanting to learn or just being plain down lazy.

Peruvian food is flat out amazing, an incredible mix of flavors.
Chinese Venezuelan food is amazing, it's really out of this world the flavor that is in there. I had Chinese Colombian and Chinese Ecuadorian food and it's really good as well. But my god, the way that their transform their original food to the paladar of the people that live on that country is amazing. I think that the original Chinese food is really spicy and for example in Ecuador is not that spirit at all lol

There is no data of native speakers of Arabic (dialect continuum), but it is believed to be in position #5 :)

I took six years of Spanish and can't speak it fluently. And definitely can't order food. Though I was close at some point, but if you don't use it, you lose it as they say.

I love how everyone was talking trash about the edits in the last spanish video he did... And now, BOOM fluid spanish!! 😂
I mean at one point I glanced at the subs and he wrote "I wanted to try" (past tense) in English when he was really using the present tense "Quiero.... Sí quiero probar un poco." He's still getting the idea across, but it's not the actual way to say that. What he's saying here is essentially "I want....Yes I want to try (in the sense of tasting; Spanish has multiple ways of saying "to try" based on the situation) a little." A little earlier he touches up his subs a bit again "Chinese and Latino food super interesting to me, so I wanted to try... (I discussed the second part earlier, but it's still relevant here). He says "comida chin... comida china hacina (I think he said hacina meaning pile of something here it's a little rough to make out; he could be saying hacienda which can mean ranch or farm in some countries and would make more sense) para mí es muy interesante... quiero (sentence from earlier). He's saying here "Chinese foo.. Chinese food for me is very interesting... I want... Yes I want to try a little" Notice that there isn't a connecting word here and the structure is a little strange. I don't really fault him for using it, (I use it myself (the whole para mí thing) as it's simpler than remembering how to use indirect object pronouns and it still gets the idea across) but his subs are touched up. Now I'm not saying it's not impressive, (he's still communicating what he means and that's what's most important) but I think this is much more of a realistic showing of where he's at than his video from before. I lived in (La candelaria) ,Caracas for 8 years , a lot of chinese people there , many restaurants and shops , but only a few spoke fluent spanish , mainly the youngsters.

There is a Malaysian family in the village of like 9k residents that my parents grew up in southern Mexico (puebla). They own a restaurant. Also saw a few chinese mexicans there in the city of Puebla.

His Spanish is really good especially considering that he's only been learning it for a couple of months. I think it's kind of cool that he keeps repeating words in Spanish the same way that native Mandarin speakers repeat words a lot, it's like he's so used to doing it in Chinese that he can't help but do it in Spanish.

@@jhoeofhoe I started studying spanish 2 years before the level my highschool taught them at just to flex on my classmates. Not having daily/frequent interactions in spanish makes it extremely hard to learn it.
