White Guy Orders Chinese Food in Mexico in Mandarin, Spanish, Cantonese

- I’m living in the small town of Tulum, Mexico and recently I decided to try the town’s only Chinese restaurant. So I went and ordered in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese. The food was amazing! And it was really great to have a funny and interesting conversation with the owners of the restaurant. It was also really cool to experience Mexican Chinese food for the first time, which as a branch of Chinese Latino food more generally actually proved to be really delicious. Stay tuned with my videos as I’m practicing a whole bunch of languages here in Tulum!

Learning Spanish through Stories?
The course I used initially to give me a good foundation in Spanish was called “Spanish Uncovered” by the polyglot Olly Richards, which is a way to learn Spanish naturally through stories. I really enjoyed it, and it seems to be an excellent way to get a good foundation in a new language. bit.ly/3pPB0we

The restaurant owner is no less of a genius than Xiaoma himself. He speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Spanish. #Respect :)
And most likely Toisanese too because that Cantonese accent sound so strong

The first guy was really trying to practice his English with you. It goes both ways. You gotta let the people practice with you too.
That's something my German and Japanese teachers would tell the class, if you're visiting and they hear you speak English, they won't let you practice your German or Japanese, because they'll want to practice their English on you lol
This is heavily edited down. He just didn’t show all of that, I’m sure.
Exactly, it works both ways. You speak Spanish and they speak English - win win! ;D
@@MisterDibitybopty It works best if it goes in the same language both ways, in this case English. Then you can actively hear words from a native speaker. That's at least my experience learning different languages.

I like it how the Chinese guy doesn’t even care and talks all aggressive to him and he’s like bro do you want rice or no
Lmao, that’s just how we talk😂😂 people always say we sound like we’re arguing when we’re just having a normal conversation.
@@angelina_allanson8759 yeah because every time there's a fourth tone after a few thirds it sounds like something intense is happening in English intonation lol.
That is (unfortunately) pretty standard in the Chinese culture. Not so much aggressive but abrupt is more how you would look at it. Not meant as a slight or anything but just the natural demeanor.
When u can’t understand Chinese dialect it simply sounds like people are arguing with one another when they are just having normal conversation. That’s just how we communicate with one another in Chinese dialects.
It’s probably because in English we use tone (sing-songy) to soften our polite conversation, while in Chinese tones are unavailable for that function.
Found it funny he tried to impress them with his mandarin and they were like, that’s cool bro. DO YOU WANT RICE OR NOODLES!!
Chinese people are business first
RICE OR NOODLES? "Just add whatever." SPICY OR NOT? I dont even remember if Xiaoma replied to that 😂

@@GlennTheSadMarinersFan yep :)
I would say that genius is a deliberate translation error
Yes, I think he is super smart as well, but I think its funny when other people who can speak just as many languages start saying that to him. I know it's because he has the accent down, that's what throws them beyond his language skills alone.
It's the lower expectation of being a white American. I throw out two words in Chinese and everyone says omg omg omg, meanwhile they're speaking 4 languages/dialects perfectly. I think it's because if you're a white American everyone else just speaks English to you, so when you show you've put in the effort to learn another language, even only a little bit, they are surprised and/or appreciative.
He better post a “Going to China, eating Mexican food and ordering in Spanish “ 😂

As a Mexican I can confirm Mexicans love Chinese food.
Most people know what Chinese and Mexican (and TexMex) and Italian food is like now.
But I wonder how many are familiar with Cajun food, probably the best food America has to offer. I'd have to guess at least some parts of Mexico have some Cajun restaurants.
Go to Mexicali
I can also confirm this. In addition most Mexicans where I live also love the vietnamese food.

I love how Chinese people got this attitude at first then he breaks through by speaking their language. And they are so happy to talk to him and it gives them joy to be able to speak in their natural tongue. This is what the world needs right now pure joy and happiness through communication and traditions
I would love to learn Chinese!! there’s actually a lot of Chinese people in Mexico, I live in Mexicali, Baja California and we have the largest Chinatown in Mexico, so I grew up eating Chinese food!! hahahah which is actually kinda like our traditional food here! it’s everywhere and really really delicious perhaps Mexicali’s most unique claim to fame comes courtesy of our Chinese immigrants.
The Chinese began arriving to the Imperial Valley region in the mid to late 1800s to build the railroad and then as workers for the Colorado River Land Company, a U.S. company that designed and constructed the extensive irrigation system in the Mexicali Valley. Many of the workers who came to the region to work, were forced to leave the U.S. after their contract ended. Instead of returning to China, many settled just over the border in Mexicali and concentrated in a neighborhood that became known as “La Chinesca.” Today, La Chinesca is the largest Chinatown in all of Mexico. At one time in the early 1900s, the Chinese outnumbered the Mexicans in Mexicali three to one.there are more than 200 Chinese restaurants that are found around the city, there’s a lot of history hahahah
it will be really cool if one day you can come here and surprise them with your Chinese and taste the delicious food!!
Oh and of course they also speak Spanish!! como tú!! Woahh increíble! si algún día decides venir eres bienvenido y tu esposa también!! 🤍

4:33 he says something so interesting. It’s not something I’ve seen happen almost ever. He says “I Havnt seen so many” (referring to Chinese people in Mexico) this is wild because it actually shows that his native language of English is now being effected by the other languages he has learned and his time spent immersed in other cultures (rather than his native tongue effecting those new languages). An American would very rarely say “I’ve not seen so many” we would say “I’ve not seen many” or “I’ve hardly seen any” etc. But non native English speakers say “I’ve not seen so many” rather frequently. That’s how deep he is into other languages and cultures they’re effecting the way he thinks about his own native tongue

The northern part of México is where we have a lot of Chinese immigrants. There's a lot of interesting stories about how the chinese culture made an impact on Northern Mexico's culture. For example, in my hometown Guasave, you can fish a looooot of what we call Botete, the very exotic Fugu :P
Before the Chinese arrived to Guasave, we didn't eat Botete (This was around early 1900's), beacuse we thought it was poisonous, and it is, but the Chinese taught the people of Guasave and other towns in Sinaloa how to remove the poisonous gland and make delicious dishes with it :P
Also there's a border city called Mexicali which is famous for having the best Chinese Food in México.
And that's just the start :P if you wanna know more to convince you to visit Sinaloa and other northerns states, i'd be glad to tell you more about it.

I admire you so much, it’s so cool to be able to take on such difficult languages!! I wish I had the brain wiring for other languages, I’ve tried several time but just can’t seem to get it.
It is amazing how multilingual he is. I was impressed before but now Spanish too🤯
When I was a teenager visiting family in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora (shout out!).. my little brain was rattled, while out shopping in el centro I walked into a shop owned and operated by an Asian family. Asians living in Mexico, speaking Spanish? "Me no sabo!"
My world view has drastically changed since then, and continues to evolve along the way as I learn about the histories of particular people, places, and purpose of events around the earth.
Dude that was one of the most interesting things I've seen you do/go.
Chinese people talking spanish was wild. I got a kick out of it. Love your videos.
I am mexican and understand spanish. I guess that's why i enjoyed it lol.
Be safe....
I'm from Mexico and I think Mexicans would love you! I'm actually part Chinese from my mother, unfortunately I can't speak Chinese, but I can speak English and Spanish.
Out of ALL your videos, THIS is my favorite one.
This was a great video, nice exchanges and conversation.
