I would love to learn Chinese!! there’s actually a lot of Chinese people in Mexico, I live in Mexicali, Baja California and we have the largest Chinatown in Mexico, so I grew up eating Chinese food!! hahahah which is actually kinda like our traditional food here! it’s everywhere and really really delicious perhaps Mexicali’s most unique claim to fame comes courtesy of our Chinese immigrants. The Chinese began arriving to the Imperial Valley region in the mid to late 1800s to build the railroad and then as workers for the Colorado River Land Company, a U.S. company that designed and constructed the extensive irrigation system in the Mexicali Valley. Many of the workers who came to the region to work, were forced to leave the U.S. after their contract ended. Instead of returning to China, many settled just over the border in Mexicali and concentrated in a neighborhood that became known as “La Chinesca.” Today, La Chinesca is the largest Chinatown in all of Mexico. At one time in the early 1900s, the Chinese outnumbered the Mexicans in Mexicali three to one.there are more than 200 Chinese restaurants that are found around the city, there’s a lot of history hahahah it will be really cool if one day you can come here and surprise them with your Chinese and taste the delicious food!! At first I wanted to write that salary in Mexico is probably low, but then searched a bit and found a figure of average USD 16k a year and that's more than I make in Europe, lol. Yet the minimum wage is 130 peso per day, and that's like $6, which is pretty bad. So very confusing information, probably there is some big class/pay divide causing this.
There's plenty of mom and pop Chinese restaurants that you can get a plate for $7 in so cal. It's the chain restaurants that cost more and aren't as great. Although less risk of tummy issues because of generic consistency
@@_APV_ Mexico is a pretty poor country. In hub cities it might be more aligned with global salaries, but a big majority of the country is small towns that don't make much money. When visiting family me and my sinlings would be dumbfounded by how much USD gets you there. A pound of freshly made tortillas are like $1 usd. This video made me so happy, it’s sort of reminded me of when I was staying in Muncar, East Java and I met a local woman who 30 years earlier had learned English and French from Expat families living in her area (back then she was in Banyuwangi). She was so happy to get to use English again, and even made a few jokes about how her husband had no idea what we were saying
4:33 he says something so interesting. It’s not something I’ve seen happen almost ever. He says “I Havnt seen so many” (referring to Chinese people in Mexico) this is wild because it actually shows that his native language of English is now being effected by the other languages he has learned and his time spent immersed in other cultures (rather than his native tongue effecting those new languages). An American would very rarely say “I’ve not seen so many” we would say “I’ve not seen many” or “I’ve hardly seen any” etc. But non native English speakers say “I’ve not seen so many” rather frequently. That’s how deep he is into other languages and cultures they’re effecting the way he thinks about his own native tongue
to the people confused why they call him a genius while being able to do the same or more than him heres the explanation being a polyglot is normal in their culture and to be a genius you must be above average if everyone can do it is it not average? so for an american someone whos culture it is to not speak any other language this man is absolutely above average therefore a genius
Many native speakers say his tone is very good, that his Mandarin at least is not like someone struggling to get by, but fluent. While these owners do speak English, nobody would ever mistake them for being fluent or doing it in the native accent like he does (no disrespect meant at all, i can barely speak one language myself, so they're all impressive to me).

How did you get the Southeast Asian accent?
I'm Mexican, I also speak some English but thanks to you I'm now motivated to learn Chinese, thanks for the inspiration !
It’s been 2 years, have you learned Chinese? :)
His ass didn’t learn shit😂😂
At one time in the early 1900s, the Chinese outnumbered the Mexicans in Mexicali three to one.there are more than 200 Chinese restaurants that are found around the city, there’s a lot of history hahahah
it will be really cool if one day you can come here and surprise them with your Chinese and taste the delicious food!!
Oh and of course they also speak Spanish!! como tú!! Woahh increíble! si algún día decides venir eres bienvenido y tu esposa también!! 🤍
That's where I am from and most of my family. It's a great town

Yup!! I'm from Mexicali and definitely a lot of Chinese people there, I heard Pancho Villa was chasing them out of Mexico back in some war but they got stuck in Mexicali trying to enter the U.S they also built tunnels for protection but definitely a lot of Chinese in Mexicali.. Just search "Los Chinos de Mexicali" and you will some videos it's crazy how they've kept tradition all this time..

It costs over $4 for McDonalds french fries in California, seeing a plate of homecooked food from a resturant under $15 dollars isnt going to happen here.....so seeing all that food for less than $5 is astonishing.
Bro i feel you chinese plate like that cost like 9-15$ here
At first I wanted to write that salary in Mexico is probably low, but then searched a bit and found a figure of average USD 16k a year and that's more than I make in Europe, lol.
Yet the minimum wage is 130 peso per day, and that's like $6, which is pretty bad. So very confusing information, probably there is some big class/pay divide causing this.
oh shut up there’s always $5 lunch specials of home cooked food everywhere u go...
There's plenty of mom and pop Chinese restaurants that you can get a plate for $7 in so cal. It's the chain restaurants that cost more and aren't as great. Although less risk of tummy issues because of generic consistency

Mexico is a pretty poor country. In hub cities it might be more aligned with global salaries, but a big majority of the country is small towns that don't make much money.
When visiting family me and my sinlings would be dumbfounded by how much USD gets you there. A pound of freshly made tortillas are like $1 usd. The same amount of crappy store tortillas here would be around $6+
Although, electronics and name brand clothing is around 10% to 20% more expensive in Mexico

So sweet! You made them so happy talking in their own language in a country that doesn't speak it. So sweet
OMG, xiaoman, he was quite unresponsive bordering on hostile and slowly warmed to you and realised that you have a unique ability to speak Mandarin and Cantonese. Hence his statement that his Mexican customers are jealous of your ability. Keep it up and stay safe. Enjoy your visit to Mexico.
That jealousy statement is pretty foul. He shouldn’t say that in a country that has allowed him to run a steady business in. If you were to say that to in any other country where diversity is at large racism would of been used as a tool. That derogatory statement was to be a non called one.
@@deathwish3496 Nonsense, he said it in jest as it is of no relevance whether the customers are able to speak Mandarin or not. You misconstrued his joking statement that was not intended to hurt or disparage any one. Please do not feign indignant where there should be none.
