I live in the neighborhood across the street, and was also an early customer. They are such nice people, and the food is amazing. This has been our go to BBQ since they opened, partly due to proximity, but mostly due to it being _excellent_ food.
This is probably my favourite Bon Appetit episode yet!! I'm Vietnamese Australian and this is my first time hearing a Viet person with a Southern accent. My parents also tried to flee Vietnam by boat and sacrificed everything for my siblings and myself - taking a risk and doing your absolute best in honour of their sacrifice hits really hard. I can feel so much love, passion and pride that Hong and Phong put into their food. Holding onto their culture while creating new opportunities for themselves. A story I see across so many immigrants, yet it never fails to inspire me. I hope I can try Brisket and Rice one day. Thank you for this one, Bon Appetit.
It was a pretty hard transition for them as well. They did not have any easy time assimilating, back in the 70’s and 80’s. . Culturally Texas was the polar opposite and there was a lot of animosity within the shrimping and fishing industries that they entered so it was rough going for them for quite a while and took amazing fortitude. They are a really vibrant part of the community now.
Our Asian community is huge here in Houston. We have a huge population of Vietnamese and Chinese. Plus other south asian countries. We have a lot of fusion Asian foods like viet-cajun, Mexican-sushi, Korean bbq/USA bbq and mixtures of various middle eastern, Asian, Caribbean, African, and latin ethnicities. It's more diverse than any other major city.
@matthewtanner5127 true you have Houston beat on the population of people not born there but the number of groups is still greater here. Also with our port, we have more ethnic ingredients here, meaning our food is more authentic.
I tried this place out in 2022 and I still think about that fried rice to this day 😭 Literally the best fried rice I've ever had and I promise I'm not over exaggerating
I agree. I love the fried rice here. I love the Chinese sausage used, and I like that they don't have Peas in them. Many restaurants make their fried rice without the Chinese sausage, and they add Peas as fillers. I am not a fan of those fried rices.
Kansas City "we have the best bbq.", Carolinas "No we have the best bbq" Memphis "Nice try were the best" Texas "You aren't even on the same level as our gas stations"

I absolutely love this! These two seem so genuine and down-to-earth. For someone like me, whose first language isn’t English, their strong Southern accents make it even more fascinating. Such a cool and unique combination!

His pricing is way too kind which is great for his community, but I watched a few episodes of "Food Truck Race" and selling a loaded fried rice for under $10 is wild, and with brisket at 11.25 is also jaw dropping. Like on that show 18 for rice and 25 for the brisket rice would be expected... at least. 7:29

This place is a staple for me. Easily some of the best BBQ I have ever had. They have dino ribs on Saturday first come first serve and everything on the menu is phenomenal. I can not recommend this place enough!
Not all rice is created equal. Living in Hawai'i and being influenced by asian culture, I can see why his rice and brisket is popular. We eat rice w/ everything here and just like he does, some places serve "fragrant" rice, sticky rice, local rice, hapa rice, and everything in between. Big ups to this bruddah...aloha!!
My coworkers and I ate there about two weeks ago based on a recommendation. It is absolutely legit! We will be regular customers! Word is getting out because there was a line out the door during lunch!

One of my fav's in Houston, it's delicious. Parking is getting tight now since they got Michelin designation, but worth the trouble if you are in the area
I heard that they are moving to a new location in April 2025, 2 miles away. The new location is supposed to have a bigger dining room and bigger parking lot.
I mean, the title is also somewhat misleading. It's not "at" a gas station. It's close to a gas station, but a completely separate store, with its own parking lot.
Just like the other dude in the comments said, if you live in the area, you just KNOW. Even Kansas City (thats known for its own type of BBQ) arguably the BEST BBQ is Joe's, it's a gas station...I feel like in the south you have certain unassuming places that look like they serve the same roadway garbage, just for it to have the best BBQ, soul food, or fried chicken you ever had.
I'm going to stop by next time I leave Traders Village. I have seen it many times, but never thought to try it out. Houston has gems all over the place so it's hard to try them all. But this will happen soon :)
If they are getting push backs for the Chinese sausages/lapcheung they could try dicing it up instead of slicing it. In Cantonese cooking lapcheung in thick slices is eaten with steam rice for the reason that it has a strong flavour to go with the plain and almost flavourless steamed rice, but if used in fried rice where the rice is already heavily flavoured with all the seasoning and eggs etc you would dice them to reduce the intensity of each pieces so you don’t get overwhelmed by the sweet taste of the lapcheung in each bite and get a more balanced flavour with each spoonful.
I love the Chinese sausage in their fried rice, so for me, I like them to be bigger cuts. I can understand that not everyone is used to it, since many restaurants don't use it in their fried rice.
