TF2's Strange Problem (And How To Fix It)

  • I've always been disappointed by how many TF2 weapons can't be strange. Some of them, namely the reskins, are as such because of licensing issues... but what about the rest? I often hear that certain weapons don't have anything meaningful to track, but I strongly disagree. I think every weapon has a relevant metric that a strange version could count, which is what I want to go through. Let me know if you have better ideas for any of them!

    Strange disguise kit would probably be pretty straight forward: one point for every kill or destruction while disguised

    Funny thing about Strange Shields: They track melee kills too, which makes it immensely frustrating if you use a Shield/Sword combo consistently and both are strange because you have a shield with like 20 more kills than your sword because some spy ran out and got bopped or you charged at an enemy sniper and accidentally killed him or something.

      you shield has 20 more kills than your sword because you killed 20 more people with your shield equipped.

      Didn’t they change this though? I have way more melee kills on my demo melees than kills on my shield. Then again I have been playing for more than a decade

      ​@@vinstaal0it used to only track shield bash kills, but they changed it to also track melee kills a while ago. Annoyed the shit out of me because it meant my strange targe, which had like 100 kills on it, lost its funny status when comparing it to my eyelander. But this was as you said, probably changed over a decade ago now.

    One things I've always wanted for my Rocket Jumper and Gunboats is a strange that keeps track of distance traveled, similar to whatever system the achievements use to determine that for the parachute achievement. I feel like that would be even more interesting than just a base stat of how many times I rocket jumped, though having both present would be really cool

    I think we need strange parts for Saxton Hale kills and Zombie kills to coincide with the new gamemodes we've been getting recently. The closest you can get at the moment is a strange filter to a specific map for any of the modes, but that obviously only tracks one specific map rather than the entire gamemode.

    I feel like an Ap Sap should count how long it has talked along with building destroyed. Also I think the Ap Sap should be a Red Tape Recorder resikin but that’s unrelated.

      I have over 1 million seconds cloaked on my strange invis watch. Would be way more as I got it the day they dropped, but I haven't played nearly as much as I used to.

    I think another good strange part would be "deaths with full meter" and/or "deaths while meter active". It'd be a funny way to track, for instance, how many times you've died with full Uber as a medic or times you died with full mmph

    I know I'm off on a tangent, but at 2:10 I love how you instinctively turned to save your teleporter, saw that it was getting sapped by an RTR, and so ignored it and returned your attention to the sentry.
    Bet the match was half over by the time you needed to break that sapper.

    Some weapons have genuine reasons as to why they don’t have stranges, at least in the case of promotional weapons and specifically the Vita-Saw, all having to do with copyright issues.
    Edit: Also yes this heavily bums me out because I have a pro ks three rune blade named “Caliburn” that will never be strange and I will be eternally sad.

    Something you can track on the jumper stuff is the distance traveled. There is an achievement for it, so it's not like they can't track it

    I'm thinking with the Fan O' War it should be Marked-for-Death kill assists and shields be charge kills. Also, speaking of low counts, imagine Short Stop push kill count. In fact, imagine a general count for environment kills.

    There’s another unmentioned that you didn’t cover- Strange Haunteds, being topical for Halloween.
    Strange Haunted items were and are limited Strange versions of Halloween cosmetics that were once obtainable from special unlocked Halloween crates obtained during Scream Fortress 2014, and are now only obtainable from the Haunted Gift Cauldron- in short they’re something everyone already has heard of or has gotten.
    The issue with Strange Haunteds is that for whatever reason, Valve forced them to be equipped with a Strange Filter (an item similar to a part that makes your strange track progress on only a specific map, which nobody but collectors ever even try because why would you, and really should be more gamemode focused like the competitive strange filter, the only one of its kind)
    The strange filter is for carnival of carnage yet without the unique tagline filtered weapons get, so you can only get kills on that one map. It also comes pre-loaded with 2 added strange parts: Bumper Car Kills (for the minigames) and Carnival Games Won (also for minigames)
    Their potential is vastly underutilized by being forcibly stitched to a single map in addition to the lack of being able to get any Strange Haunteds since their crates haven’t dropped in years, and they’re highly expensive. In my eyes, it would be better if they removed the filter and the strange parts, but made the primary into ‘Points earned during Halloween’, and also making them have a chance to drop from the Pumpkin Packages given by the Contracts.
    This would breathe them new life, make them actually useful and exciting to receive, and even open the door for more Halloween-related strange parts (there are already filters for most Community Halloween Maps)
    Possible Parts could include:
    Bosses Beaten (Monoculous, Merasmus, HHH)
    Spells Cast
    Skeletons Slaughtered/Monsters Slain (last one being for custom community npc enemies like the Scarecrows on Farmageddon)
    Crumpkins Collected
    Pumpkin Bomb Kills
    Spooked Kills (players scared by HHH/Ghosts)
    Thrillers Danced
    Souls Collected (like gargoyle except on cosmetic)
    Halloween Assists
    Halloween Minigames Won (Gravestone/Bonesaw end of round minigames, Carnival of Carnage)
    Underworld Escapes
    Bombinomicon Explosions (by the badge item and possibly his bomb spell in Ghost Fort for funzies)
    Island Loot Claimed (for end of round on old official valve maps)
    Death Pits Fallen Into
    And many, many more!

    I have a Wrap assasin with around 190 kills, 180 being heavies
    I also have a Holy mackerel with a Halloween war paint that tracks Kills during Hallowee, Full Moon and Robots killed during Halloween (I have 600+ robots, started this October)

    Quick note
    The wrenches count sentry kills as their primary strange stat and melee kills as it's secondary stat
    So the short circuit could probably swap it's counters around too

    Oddly enough, the primary stat tracked by the Holiday Punch is how many enemies you’ve forced into laughter (“Tickle Fights Won”), while Kills are a secondary.

    We could also use an MVM Damage Dealt To Tanks strange part, mostly because I want to show off a strange Bushwacka with hundreds of thousands of tank damage (I like to play anti-tank Sniper whenever possible)
    Edit: Also we need more weapon-specific Strangifiers. I have a ProKS Collector's Disciplinary Action that I would absolutely LOVE to have as Strange, but there's no DA strangifier.

    Things like the jumper weapons should have a stat like “distance traveled while blast jumping” because just tracking the times launched off of the ground would probably ignore wall jumps, pogos, and other things like that.

    I would love that Afterburn Kills Strange Part, as currently I have to use a "Burning Players Killed" part on my s.f. Huntsman, which kind of does track how many kills I got with flaming arrows, but not entirely.
    An afterburn kills strange part would allow me to only track kills I got with flaming arrows, as it would only track my own afterburn kills and thus only my flaming arrow kills.

    I definitely do believe there should be some stats that some weapons can track instead of kills or in addition to them. Examples include times teleported to an exit with the eureka effect’s reload key, or buildings of each type built with any other wrench.

    My first thought for the parachute, thermal thruster, rocket/sticky jumper was "distance traveled". And for the demoknight boots, seconds spent charging / distance charged.

    Fun fact, mini-crit kills are already tracked by the Critical Kills part, which would make one surrounded around mini-crits specifically redundant

    Some of these stats are already tracked in game for some of the achievements (i.e. distance traveled for both Soldier and Demo achievements with the parachute, the FaN environmental kill achievement) so it would likely be easy to implement.

    Another thing you could do with the gunboats is track the meters that you've flown while in the air using them.

    For the jumper weapons. Distance traveled would be a cool stat to track.
    Also I would love the strange count for honorable duels won just for melee weapons in general. It's not every day you have a true melee duel with someone. Most of the time they'd rather shoot you first before they finally pull out their melee.

    I would also like trackers for "Splash damage kills" and "times fired". I could finally track how many times I killed people with rollers, but it would also track people I killed while hitting their team mates, I guess. And putting "times fired" and "times hit" on a weapons sounds really funny.

    I think it'd be better if the Pain Train counted time capturing a relevant objective rather than specific points captured

    Stat clocks are so cool, I want one on my sandvich that tracks every time i eat it. Preferably nearby the spot where heavy bites so a piece of it is missing after use.

    Full Moon kill strange part has been on my Strange Rocket Launcher since I got the rocket. It's super niche and cool at the same time, also i renamed my rocket to have moon-related name so it fits even better

    We also need a strange part for multi-kills, aka weapons that get additional kills with 0.1 seconds of the original kill. This could be used on all explosive weapons, weapons that can AoE taunt kill, and the Machina/Shooting Star.

    Dragon's Fury my beloved. I'd pay decent cash for a Strange version of it. Also odd how it has one singular war paint. It's less paintable than a fish.

    For a small time there was a bug that allowed you to apply a nameless Strangifier to any item in the game. A Pseudo Universal Strangifier. There currently exist a number of Strange Crates and PDAs. Because of the way stat tracking in TF2 works, the Strange PDA actually tracks sentry kills.

    The jetpack and rocket jumper should have "total distance flown" because there's a mechanism in the game to track that (currently used for like 1 achievement.)

    Really loved this video as someone who also only plays with weapons that are Strange and have a bunch of Strange parts.
    Some things to mention:
    The Disciplinary Action already counts players whipped so I'm not really sure what the "Allies Motivated" tracker would do that you proposed.
    Giving the Vaccinator damage resisted could be a good addition or critical hits denied for the Vac or Battalions backup.
    Also Valve, please add more Strange parts as well as Strange filters for TF2's official maps rather than just the community made maps. I would like to track kills and sentry kills only on Dustbowl please.

    I also think a metric for the cozy camper that you could track is how many flinches you've negated by having the camper equipped. could a cool stat for my hard-scoping friends lol

    I think backstab kills isn't necessary because the knives do so low damage close up that unlike headshot kills for snipers, where you could reasonably get a high amount without actually being good enough to hit headshots, that isn't really possible for the knife so around 95% of kills are backstabs anyways.

    A change that should be done on the strange part Gib Kills is it should also be able to add on the detonator. Tried a few years ago when I mainly used my strange detonator but bought that strangepart to find out I was fooled by Valve

    I feel like a great way to give out new strangifiers and strange parts is with a new mvm tour, I mean strangifiers already have gray mans logo on it and depending on how rare they are I could see it rivaling two cities as a lot of peoples main tour

    I hope they'll rework how counting kills works in VS Saxton Hale, as currently the only way to level up your vsh-map-filtered strange is to be the one to last-hit Hale. Giving that there's only 1 Hale per round and 22 other Mercs, the challenge is a bit too much.
    And by "they" I mean Valve, because doing it with VScript on the map's end would make more problems than it solves.

    For the gunboats you can make it show how much damage it has reduced when you blast jump every time and for cozy camper you can make it show how much health it has healed you in total and for the darwins it is the same as gunboats, showing how much fire damage it has reduced.

    I for one always liked the idea of strangifiers. I put in all this work playing and trading to actually craft the weapons using the weapon crafting system, but if I want to count my kills with it I'm SOL? Nah, slap a Strangifier on it and now I have a self-crafted Strange Air Strike.
