Ortlieb's Quick Lock Systems Explained

- Ortlieb uses various Quick-Lock systems, with QL1 probably being the most well traveled attachment system for panniers in the world.
There are now many iterations, including QL1, QL2.1, QL3.1 and QLS. They all allow single handed removal of the pannier, and make up some of the most secure attachment systems out there.
This video explains the differences between them.

03:42 - QL2.1
06:32 - QL3.1

That's easily the best and most informative video on Ortlieb panniers. The tip about turning around the washer was particularly useful. Nice one. JP.
you are a champ. Easily and carefully you described them with critical differences. Thank you!
Great breakdown in these systems! I threw a QL 3 bracket in my Brompton luggage carrier and can now carry my Office Bag on that ad my nonfolding bike.
Thanks! very well explained. Good tip about pointing the QL1 lower retaining hook forward (vs aft), would've installed mine backwards if I hadn't watched this :-)
Awesome video. For someone just getting into this. You rock.
Very informative. Thank you!
thanks a lot, I didn't know how to move the hooks.
very useful post.
ciao from Venice, Italy.
Great overview! Thank you
Thanks, very useful explanation.
Great succinct review. Thank you.
thank you for this video, nice and professional! I just got the QL3.1 for my daily commuting and the QL 2.1 for bikepacking trips :)
yeah, I'm thinking of one both too before I go on a trail trip rather than 2 of the same. I want to commuter one for my regular city trips and the QL 3.1 seems way better for that.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Very informative! Thx
Really good informative film, could do with a few internal shots showing pockets and how the carry handles and straps work, that said bravo, super quality video and audio.
Is there a way to lock those bags to the rack to keep someone from stealing them when your off the bike?
Great vid!
very informative
Are you able to pop those little inserts out easily, say if you were to buy a new rack which had bigger bars?
good vid
7:50 you carry the QL3.1 bag by its locking wire instead of the normal handle that’s on top, and with some of the older QL systems, it seems those two are one and the same. So is that really safe? I bought a QL3.1 bag recently, and I’m unsure of how much force the wire can take. On the other hand, the top handle broke after a couple of uses so maybe I got it backward after all
I use the Office Bag QL3.1 and the wire definitely seems too fragile to lift it by, so I only use the carrying straps. If yours broke, contact Ortlieb because they're pretty good about honoring the warranty.
Yeah well spotted, the bag should definitely be carried by the carry handle and the wire is just there for opening the QL mechanism. That said, I’ve never come across a wire pulling out in our aftersales team so it’s probably a lot stronger than it looks. As per the other comment if your handle has broken it’s likely it’s easily repaired. If you are in the UK drop us a line; helpdesk@lyon.do.uk
Question: You've said the QL2.1 rail is much stiffer than the QL1 rail. How does the QL3.1 system compare on this front?
Your video (and pictures) show it doesn't have a(n external) rail joining the mounting points of the carry handle, which makes me wonder whether it perhaps has an internal reinforcement? Or will it just flop around a lot more?
My partner owns two ten-year old Back Roller Classics (QL1) which she uses every day on her commuter bicycle. She takes them on and off the bike multiple times a day. Over time the rails have definitely bowed, which i assume has occurred mostly when she is carrying laden bags.
By all accounts bags with the 3.1 hardware are nicer to carry around when shopping, etc. But I'm a bit concerned about how they handle weight.
Bonus points. Any thoughts about the Rack Three with its minimalist QL3.1 mounting points? Would I be right in guessing that compared to the rack and separate 3.1 mounting kit showed in your video that the top front mount would be in a similar spot, the bottom mount would be at a similar height, but further behind the axle, and that the back mount would be higher and perhaps a bit further forward?
I'd say the QL2.1 rail is the stiffest. The QL3.1 system is aimed more towards the commuter who don't tend to carry as much stuff as the cycle tourer.
Regarding your Rack Three query, I am not sure what you mean as the QL3.1 rail can be angled as appropriate so could mirror the Rack Three mounting points identically or be set up completely differently
@@LyonCycle Thanks for that. I finally found a QL3.1 pannier in store and, as you suggest, the QL2.1 rail does look significantly stiffer than on either the QL1 or QL3.1, which kind of makes the second part of my question moot. ;-)
What bike is that in the back?
so for a bike tour should I go with 2.1 or 3.1 system?
Definitely 2.1! It's much stronger.
QL3.1 is definitely tailored towards commuters, so QL2.1 is the one!
the new back roller pro does not fit well on the Tubus Grand Expedition. the bags dimensions are larger, and the lower 'hook' does not have optimal contact with the rack. have yet to do a fully loaded test.
Interesting! Have you tried turning the lower anchoring hook spacer by 90 degrees to gain an additional couple of mm? Or inverting the lower anchoring rail?
Have a look at the Tubus Tara, which has an 18kg payload but is currently quite difficult to find
@@LyonCycle thank You for Your answer🙂
I'm trying to attach the clip to the bag. Someone tried to steal my panniers. Help please
Snapped the clip on the Quick Lock system the first time I used it. Other than that, a fantastic product.
Camera for away from product
I didn't know David Bowie does review on Ortlieb products. JK, but seriously tho, you do look a bit like David Bowie. :) Thanks for the vid review.
Hi lots of really good information......one critisim ..sound quality.....terrible.can barely hear him
Peter, I couldn’t agree more. I messed up and my external mic wasn’t recording so it was built in camera sound unfortunately. Plus the estate around me is a building site! We have grand plans to improve our content though, watch this space
Arkel mounting system puts Ortlieb to shame
So Ortielb copied Arkel's cam-lock... good idea.
Upper income class folk are often making an effort to kill the dreams, besides also not spreading opportunity and wealth to the lower income class as THEY are also self centered and greedy and steal people's spirit of freedom from them.
