12:47 That kid ain't right.
When I was editing this, I didn't notice his insane expression. Too Funny.
I had to pin it...can't stop laughing.
That's what 13 year old boys do. Kind of part goblin at that age.
You could have said "the kids aren't alright" and would have led to further music related dialogue..
@@disenfranchisedamerican6804 I think he was just doing his best Foghorn Leghorn imitation. No need to get so riled up about it.
8:02 the dad headbanging in the background is parenting done right
Ha, I didn't even notice that! Excellent!
I certainly did not see it ....only after this comment went back to check it out.....Dad Rocks !!!

Kids seem a bit disturbed and traumatized, which is the only proper response to this great, chilling video.
they just weren't shrooming and high as a kite like I was... :-) great reaction tho...
I’m 16 and I live for this music. It’s cool too see other people my age react to this because I don’t know anybody my age who likes metal.
Keep the metal flame alive! This song came out right after I graduated high school. Metal had really taken over around that time. Everyone I knew was into it!
Pass it around. Quality compositions are timeless.
It doesnt matter how old are you....Metal will always find a way!....and we are all a GREAT Family around the World!....Greatings from Germany (more than 40 Years Metal Fan)
Same dude!!
I'm 13 and metallica and other metal, grunge, and rock are awesome in my opinion
He's not in a coma, he is 100% sentient. Not of his body or his environment, but sentient of the fact that he has been completely mutilated and faced with the horrible realization that he can't communicate. He is in constant pain. That's how he knows he is alive. The visions of his father and the various conversations he has with him are a mixture of stepping in and out of consciousness. "Can't tell if this is true or dream. - nothing is real but pain, now"
In the book he was inculcated the idea of War as a glorious fight between good and evil. For the sake of democracy and patriotism. But now, war has left him with a permanent reminder that, besides the results of it, It will leave nothing but marked minds and bodies. War attracts young men and women with the promise of glory. But leaves them as permanent soldiers. Just like his situation. He is surrounded by people that believe themselves honorable arguing about what is best for him. While he begs for death with a voice that they can't hear. That is War. People killing each other in the name of other people that think they know what is best for them. And when they can finally understand him because of Morse code, when he begs for death, they disregard his opinion as immoral. They turn the lights off and walk away from the room, washing their hands. To repeat the same process over and over again.
The nurse tried to end his life, but the Dr's caught her and sent her away.
best explanation
Something tells me you know nothing of war. Your idealized explanation is stylized and biased. Each war is different, some are justified some not. War is much more than people killing other people. And there is nothing wrong with democracy and patriotism.
trapped in his own brain
That was the best comment and review of a movie I ever read !!!
Metallica- For Whom The Bell Tolls
Metallica- Master of Puppets
Metallica- Enter Sandman
Black Sabbath- Iron Man
Black Sabbath- Paranoid
and creeping death by metallica
Don't forget, "Seek and Destroy!!!"
Jim Ackerman my actual list would be like 50+ songs so I had to narrow it down to just a few lol
Iron man by black sabbath, then the induction of Ozzy to the rock and roll hall of fame.
Both the metallica cover, then Ozzy singing iron man with metallica.
Fade to black?
He was a soldier....lost arms and legs ....all we had left was his mind thinking...very, very, utterly sad. killer video! Kids are GREAT and I love seeing dad in backround...incredible video, love it!
He also lost the front of his skull and his hearing.
-"Don't you have some message for him, Padre?
-"He is the product of YOUR profession, not mine."
What a line.
I love that line. It's probably my favorite of all.
Used and then left to rot, as we usually see when it comes to so called pride of serving your country
That movie has a lot of really powerful dialog and imagery. It's actually very disturbing.
@@neilpatrickhairless,
... which is a big pay of what makes it great. "A Boy and His Dog" is similarly disturbing, and it also stars Jason Robards.
@@johnwilliamblackned4341 while that may be the case in some/many veterans that isn't what's happened here.
By the "warrior profession" the man would be dead and passed on.
It's "modern medicine" keeping him unnaturally "alive" and trapped within his fragment of a body.
Hey, this time there's a REASON that Claire can't hear the bass!
Ha.. so true. PoorJason
Jon-Paul Maki This might sound like blasphemy, to Metallica fans…, but they could remaster this, and just pull the bass fader up a little bit… I’m not talking about re-recording it. I’m not talking about redoing parts. I’m just talking about re-mixing it. Add some EQ... That’s always been my only problem with this song. It could be so much heavier, if it didn’t sound like it was being performed through to tin cans, connected by a string.
@@TheAcgtrs There's only one problem with that.
Lars.
@@TheAcgtrs Here ya go. ruclips.net/video/CiaJ5V4M_8c/видео.html
Guitar noodle Thank you, sounds so much better. The only thing that would improve that is to turn Lars down a notch. I like hard hitting drums, but his always seem obnoxiously loud, especially on newer material where you can actually hear the drum track clipping *cough* Death Magnetic *cough*
"For Democracy, any man would give his only begotten son."
Walker: "Wait, what?"

I’m 17 and i love Metallica. I love how their transitions and how melodic they can be. I remember this was the first song I heard from Metallica when I was in elementary school. To this day I’m still listening to real music.
Give or take the video, but "One" the song is a masterpiece!
Take, i find the talking from the movie really obscures the music. The music without the movie is epic.
I had a thought, since Claire says she can never hear bass. Metallica -- For Whom the Bell Tolls, Day on the Green 1985. Opening with Cliff Burton's classic bass solo.
Or possibly the 1983 live performance of Anastasia Pulling Teeth. That was effing lit!.
They should watch For Whom the Bell Tolls Day on the Green. I wanna see how they react to Cliff just shredding while headbanging
Or anything by Motorhead.
I am not sure if she is old enough for that!
PLEASE DO DAY ON THE GREEN!!!!!
So 30 years ago I was 17 when this came out. This video along with the music brings out so many things. I don't remember getting as emotional over this video when I was that young. Now even during your reaction video, brings the lump in my throat with the tragedy of what soldiers go through during war. Without the video it is just an awesome song still to this day. I know during your first watch you did not understand the gravity of the situation. It is a LOT to take in. Cheers!
Mk
Hi
the video shows footage of a young soldier who has been wounded in battle, he's blind, can not speak, has no arms/legs, but fully awake, just unable to respond. the lyrics are of what may be his thoughts as he lays there a prisoner trapped inside his own body, completely dependent on others to live.
I love this song! It has been one of my favorites of Metallica. I’m glad you chose this, I enjoy seeing your reactions to great music. I went to a Metallica concert not too long ago and they included “One” on their setlist...along with many other great Metallica masterpieces! Glad you guys enjoyed this, and continue reacting to great music.
Note to Dad: Please make sure they understand that this is the price of freedom.
Dad here...Their grandfather is a veteran. They can't quite grasp the full sacrifice of freedom, but they are raised to respect and honor those who put their lives on the line for our freedom.
I would like to thank the father of these 2 for allowing them to take part in these reactions, it’s very refreshing.
I was 12 when this video came out. I think I had a similar reaction, though I think I was really fascinated by the double bass interlude. I'd never heard anything like it before. Been a Metallica fan ever since.
And a metal head was born, with a frozen cup in hand.
It's so great to see the younger generations find, explore, and enjoy this music. Keep it up totally enjoy watching your videos.
At 16 years old i don’t think i could get so close to the meaning of the song like Claire did, great job guys🤘🏾
The movie embedded in the video is called Johnny Got His Gun. It was partially the inspiration for the song. Hetfield and Ulrich wrote it as an anti-war song but Ulrich saw the movie and realized the movie was similar in the narrative they wanted to get out and thus they incorporated the movie into the video. You'll notice that everything that happened to Johnny is what they sing about:
"Darkness imprisoning me,
all that I see,
absolute horror,
I can not live,
I can not die,
trapped in myself,
Body my holding cell.
Landmine
has taken my sight,
taken my speech,
taken my hearing,
taken my arms,
taken my legs,
taken my soul,
left me with life in hell.
Those lyrics are exactly describing Johnny in the movie. That's why the face mask. He essentially has no face to speak of and not only is it antiseptic for him it's also for others so they don't have to see him.
All wars are messed up, but WW I was very, very, very messed up.

I am the same as your Dad lol. Love him rocking out in the back at 8:03
First time watching you guys but that intro is purely wholesome. “We react to music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s”. And you were born in the mid to late 2000’s I’m guessing? That’s rare that you see younger people nowadays actually actively seeking out music from that long ago, especially young kids, and especially a girl as well lol. Your parents must be real proud of you two that you aren’t stuck in the mainstream music of the 2000’s to current and that you have not only a broad musical appreciation, but that you actually go out on your own to seek that music out and that it’s not just “oh I heard this song on the radio or in a movie and it happened to be from the 70’s” or something like that. Awesome to see
My dad showed this video to me when I was a kid. I'll never forget it! Keep the metal alive kids!
Dave Mustiane taught James Hetfield how to play what is called Spider Chords. You need to check out Megadeth.
Hi Claire, you are improving your modulation smiles ! :) , Nice Metalica React ! Muy Bien! Hugs from Argentina.
I was 13 when I went to my first Metallica concert back in 92. Watching you two discovering this song for the first time brought back memories of me hearing "One" for the first time. I remember thinking that it was the coolest thing I had ever heard and also being creeped out at the same time. Keep rockin!
“This young man will be as unfeeling - as unthinking - as the dead; until the day he joins them.” The realities of war wounded.
Y’all should check out “Holy Wars... The Punishment Due” by Megadeth. Sheer thrash metal bliss!
I remember the first time I saw this video on MTV. It was also my first experience hearing Metallica. I remember thinking "what the hell was that??". But I knew I loved it.
It's cool that you guys want to give us viewers a name. So many options, but don't stress over it, something will happen naturally, at the right time. I personally have no good ideas in mind.
As a father, I am proud to see young kids like yourselves listening to great music like this and giving an intelligent opinion on it!

When you get a minute, listen to the live recording off of S&M. The orchestra adds some interesting color.
Heard this in concert back in 2009. In person, this song is shattering.
The book Johnny Got His Gun is even weirder yet. Neither is really mainstream. The book uses alot of weirdly written sentence structures and metaphors and double meanings everywhere. The movie is played more surrealist and has a interesting design choice with most scenes in black and white, and color was used for scenes that were flashbacks or dream sequences. A good juxtaposition of the bright colorfulness of life and the dark dismal horror of a hellish existence being trapped in a state that you can't understand or really cope with, or escape from for that matter.
It's actually my favorite book of all time. I first tried reading it after this album came out, at age 13. I got through three chapters, set the book down, and cried. It took me a few months to actually pick it back up and finish it, and I was completely depressed. But it's an important book that I think everyone should read.
@@calebleland8390 Have you seen the movie?
Congrats for not stopping the song and letting it play through and enjoy it the right way! Good job. It makes a difference to not stop the song. We are your Teachers.
Great video, it's refreshing to see your honest, in-the-moment reactions to songs like this. I was your age when this came out, Metallica was on the verge of becoming the biggest band on the planet, and I had pretty much the same reaction the first time I saw this video. Intense. Keep up the reactions. Subbed!
Welcome to the family
You defenitivly should listen to Metallica - Master of Puppets
Seeing that live was amazing
What's up Claire and Walker?? I love your channel! You react to "stuff" pretty good! I'm a metal head, so I love it when you react to metal, hard rock, and classic rock! How about some ACDC? I recommend a song off the album "Powerage," with singer Bon Scott, and a song off "Back in Black" with lead singer Brian Johnson. These guys have been around for about 50 years. It's cool you guys want to react to Maiden and Metallica, and rightly so...but you guys should definitely react to music for the bands that paved the way for Maiden and Metallica! Keep reacting Claire 16 and Walker 13!
Loved your reaction again:) keep it up:)
"One" is my favorite Metallica song. It's about a soldier who lost his arms, legs vision and hearing. Speech too. He was just laying there helpless. All he wanted that would give him peace, is death. Sad but powerful song.
Very powerful! What torture that would be.

Another solid choice my friends. Metallica were at the top of their game during this time. Great band.
Im glad to see you guy's enjoying the music I grew up on. Keep rocking !
Again love your videos.
There’s a reason why you can barely hear the bass, and it is the same reason why you can hear so much of the battery. It has to do with Metallica’s history and the death of their previous bassist (Cliff Burton). Jason Newsted as the new member of the band was not that well received by Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield for a while (They kinda bullied him and not gave him his props, but they eventually changed their attitude towards him). Particularly in this album, Lars wanted his battery to sound in a very particular way and in order to do so, they had to “sacrifice” the bass lines. “And justice for all” was recorded like that on purpose. Keep the reactions guys!!! You rock 🎸🤟
Thank's for the react! Your dad headbanging in the background killed me Hahaha, reminded me of my dad. 🤣 if you take requests, you should react to stone temple pilots, they are from the 90s.

"don't be loud" lol i like that right at the beginning, most people who don't know metallica think they're just noise though, but if you pay attention to their lyrics the majority of their songs have some kind of msg or meaning to them

You should react to YYZ by Rush (Live)
great videos my friends...good analysis...and awesome to see such young people liking Metallica...

It’s about a guy who gets his arms & legs blown off by a landmine. Left blind, mute, helpless, unable to cry for help, everything destroyed, but still fully aware and in pain.
IRON MAIDEN songs ALEXANDER THE GREAT and CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED
Definitely these over The Trooper lol. Maiden has so many better songs than Run To The Hills and The Trooper! I suggested Revelations from their Flight 666 DVD last time.
2 Minutes To Midnight, it’s actually fairly underrated, the musicianship on that song is as close to perfect as it gets. Steve’s bass track on 2MTM is possibly one of his best, along with Nicko’s drumming, Dave and Adrian’s guitar work and Bruce’s vocals, it’s easily one of the best in terms of musicianship. It’s certainly more than just Adrian’s simple yet awesome main riff.
I think they would enjoy the changes through the song too, from the main riff to the half-time pre-chorus, in to the chorus and then the soloing. And Claire will definitely be able to hear the bass!
its not that hard to figure out, everything is right there in the lyrics and movie dialogue, just have to listen and pay attention
This is my second video of watching you guys. Metallica is my favourite band because of this song. I was 13 when I found them...22 years ago lol keep going!
I was 16 when I got into Metallica and it changed my life forever. The next year I saw them live in concert and they were amazing
Do you know you could get world history lessons told through music. Metallica has so many great songs and are the king's of heavy metal. Another good reaction by the "offspring." As far as a lable for us fans..just don't call me a Stan..lol
Tesla’s “Edison medicine” might be the ultimate history lesson of truth amazing Tesla died penniless

Love watching you both react ... reminds me of the time when i was in my teens...
The lyrics is about the guy in the bed. He got wounded in the explosions and he doesn’t know if he’s alive, dead, or dreaming. “I can’t remember anything can’t tell if this true or dream” that was mainly what he was thinking about.

It's from a movie called Johnny get your gun. The guy was blown up by a landmine in the war and it left him.. deaf, blind, mute and he lost all if his limbs.
I did the exact sane as the previous comment, loving your reactions more and more
Master of Puppets gets most people's #1 from Metallica, but for my money ...And Justice for All is peak Metallica.
They were angry over the loss of Cliff Burton and pushed thrash and technical writing as far as they could with this album.
They just forgot the bass...
...and justice for Jason All bass parts mixed back in correcting one of the dirtiest deeds in metal history
I was thinking you could call us your "QuaranTeens," since many of us will still be under quarantine for awhile. But that's kind of a temporary name. Hopefully.
I remember when this video came out. Metalica were growing way bigger than anyone thought possible and they always held the oppinion that music videos were trivial and beneath them. So there was all this pressure to do something BIG and this is what they did. This was how they announced themselves to the wold at large. The song and video are works of art and I still got chills during your reaction! You got it right, BTW, he suffered an injury during war and left in a coma-like state where he couldn’t move his limbs or speak. I saw your hearts sink when you figured it out. Truly, a Rock Enthusiast.
Not that he COULDN'T move his limbs. He had no limbs.
Ahhhh seeing young kids headbanging and appreciating metal music! Bravo guys👏🏻
Just call us the "rock gods" lol
For we hand down the Sacred Songs of Legend to the next generation.
Should've done the lyric video, the dialogue cuts into the music, particularly Kirk's guitar too much and is more of a distraction from the song itself. It's a good video but not really great for reactions to the actual music.
It was good for them to see the serious repercussions of war. It works with the song and helped them get a sense of the purpose of the song i think.
3 Years Apart In that case I recommend Grip Inc. - Ostracized
It's a thrash metal band formed by Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo in the mid-90s and is about veterans who are left broke and homeless after military service. It's got an awesome beat to it, very catchy.
When they perform One live it starts with a huge light show, explosions, the sound of gunfire and helicopters, before the song begins. Awesome.
Y’all are awesome! Great job on the reacting videos. Love your choices...you are educating yourselves on great music. Saw the react video for Van Halen’s “Eruption”.
Metallica one? Awsome. The song is about teaching us to be fearless in life because life is a serious war that is always full of fun times 👍 pinkfloyd "marooned" next.
You should name your peeps "Jaromes" idk it's 5am and I'm high don't listen to me..
My Favorite song ever.
The book was written after World War 1, and is set during that war. It was released in paper one year before World War 2. The writer made the book into a movie around 1960 ir so.
It should be noted, in the movie Black and White is really. Grandish Color is fantasy. Normal Color is memory. The book is called "Jonny Got His Gun" after the patriotic song "Jonny Get Your Gun", which was popular during the first World War.
The lyrics are about a guy who stepped on a land mine. Left him with no arm and legs and deaf dumb and blind. The mean he can't even play pinball
You mean he is not the pinball wizard??
@@3YearsApart1613 More like the pinball.
I believe this is based off the book "Johnny got his Gun."
Do "Hurt" by Johnny Cash please. Thanks
What did he know, three cords?
@@bw4017 yes, turns out to be three more than you know.
Its a Nine Inch Nails cover. Watch it and learn.
Everyone has already mentioned this, but this music video is basically about a boy who was a soldier in World War I. He got hit by an artillery shell and lost his arms, legs, and entire face. He can still think and is alive, but cannot speak, see, or hear. He begs for death as he cannot live as such anymore, but they keep him alive. After shaking his head to signal SOS, they understand what he says, but cannot due to it not being "allowed."
Gonna be real, y'all should actually watch or read about "Johnny Get Your Gun". It's an anti-war movie about a soldier who stepped on a landmine and lost his arms, legs, face, etc. The book was actually so intense when it came out that the author was put on a watchlist and investigated by the FBI.
He was brought back to the US alive and they were convinced he was brain dead or in a perpetual vegetative state, however he was fully sentient. He wasn't aware of his surroundings and was unable to communicate for a long time. The thoughts you hear are him going through introspection. "How can you tell what is dream and what is real when you can't tell if you are asleep or awake?" Then he has a vision of a memory with his father and realizes that even if he can't do anything else he can communicate in morse code. He's in perpetual pain and wants them to put him out of his misery. When the army realizes he's still fully alive the general asks the pastor if he can offer him any words. The pastor replies "he's a product of your profession, not mine." Finally, at the end, the nurse disconnects him from life support and he dies. His sad and unceremonious death is juxtaposed against people singing a song that is supposed to honor soldiers, to "keep the home fires burning" for when they return.
Ultimately this story is extremely anti-war. Showing that war is gruesome and while this may be an extreme case there are tons of people who come home from overseas with permanent, irreparable damage to their body and/or their mind. It's powerful and tragic.
This is a great reaction video you guys, clicked on it as soon as i saw it! One of my all time and the very first Metal song i ever heard, it's kinda of a paradox because y'all had the exact same reaction that i did when i first saw them on TV, and that was when they performed One on the 1989 Grammy Awards, i was around your ages, 12 years old and didn't know anything about Metallica except all the High School kids were wearing their ".. And Justice For All" shirts, almost everybody was wearing that shirt, the same one that the drummer Lars is wearing in that video! and the bass player Jason's wearing a Cap'n Crunch shirt and screaming his head off in some parts! was watching the Grammys that years and they announced Metallica was going to play next, i watched them play that song live on TV, was totally shocked and from that point on since then became a Metallica fan! i suggest you check that out, Metallica One 1989 Grammy Awards on you tube, Definitely worth checking out, It's cool too when you watch it because they were performing it in front of all the big celebrity musicians and actors, and you get a real reaction from the Singer/Guitarist James Hetfield, he was very nervous at first, but by that heavy scary part, they OWNED that stage and they were on fire!!! however, i always had mixed feelings about that music video, yeah it's cool that it was their first one, the scenes match the song well but they probably should've scaled back on some of that dialogue, a little too much and kinda takes away from the song, that's at least how i feel about it, but It's really cool kids your age checking and reacting to this music, seeing what it was really about back then, hard to believe it's been over 30 years since this came out, they still perform that song awesome now, finally saw them in 2009, that song still gets a huge reaction from the fans!, great reaction video kids🤘👍👌, and like your Dad in the background, i was headbanging too, he was really going nuts back there😂👍, can't help it,It's a classic killer badass masterpiece!!
The band was so reluctant to make a music video. It was a pretty good choice to start with.
Awesome Song. Saw them live a couple of years ago...this song is incredible live! 😁
This is my favorite song from them
Yup, this song is about a soldier fighting in a war and a mortar blows off in his face. He can't hear, see, smell, taste and he doesn't have arms or legs. He comes out of a coma in a hospital. During the time he is in the hospital he reflects on his life and things his father told him. Eventually the doctors get worried because he's having spasms all the time, but he doesn't seem to be dying. They call in the general and he can't figure it out either but the soldier with the general recognizes it. "It's Morse code," he says. The general asks what he is saying and the soldier looks for a minute and then says, "He is saying K-I-L-L- M-E over and over again."
As I recall, the lyrics are based on the *1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo,* which is about World War I. A specific passage that inspired the song is: "How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to one shot. But if he does win, you'll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I'd read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn't believe it, cos it's a million to one. But a million to ONE always leaves one. I'd never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. One."
James Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older half brother, David Hale, who was also in a band.
In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun then got made into a movie that was directed by Trumbo starring Timothy Bottoms and Jason Robards. The video for the song itself uses images and monologues from that movie.
This was the first single released by the band to feature bassist Jason Newsted, who continued playing with Metallica until 2001. You have to listen *very carefully* to hear his playing, however, since the bass was buried in the mix.
To me this is the best Metallica song ever. Great reaction. Keel it up.
I got introduced to Metallica through the black album when I was 12. I listened to thi song and watched the video when I was 15. Had a deep impact. I doubt I will introduce my kids listen to music like this until they turn 18! , because it is very Dark and Bleak.
❤ hearing you guys listening to our (old) music that makes u think and feel....😭😭 sorry just hear the first RIP makes me cry.
This song gives me the chills every time
you guys are kool ...and i think it's funny when your dad pops up in your videos...stay kool lil budz!
To answer your question about the big bump he is laying under - it is an old form of respirator called an iron lung. Before modern ones were invented to help a patient keep breathing, they used a form of pressure fluctuations to virtually force air in and out and keep people alive. A lot of people that had polio and other diseases before vaccines were invented lived in them for years or the rest of their lives.
I remember when this came out, we were excited as it was their first video.
