I get those same chills 30 years later
Soon as the tune started up I had them all up my spine
30 years! I seen early Metallica with Cliff open for Iron Maiden. Getting frickin old.
Chills every time
I do too also. Crazy how the time flies. I remember being in 8th grade and running over to my friends house to watch headbangers ball to watch the video drop.
Every time.
Thats not a song, thats an experience.
Damn real
@@TheAdventuresofTNT oh i loved your reactions and critic in general!
@@TheAdventuresofTNT She nailed it. It's such an amazing play of artistry in the music versus the terror of the story. I think the guitar solo saved her from being permanently traumatized!
It's a song! And I listen to it's to sleep . Is beautiful! 😘😘
I love when intelligent people react to this video! She really gets it.
Yeah, this is one where listening to just the music and listening for a message brings you to completely different conclusions
I chilled when she said "I get chills." I'll never forget when the Headbangers Ball premiered this video.
Head bangers ball....HBB every Sat night...... Back when MTV was in its prime...... Good reaction
Lee Foo I was in 6th grade when the video premiered. I was at a friend’s birthday party sleepover and we stayed up to watch it. If i remember correctly, MTV aired twice that night on HB. Amazing times
It is still gut wrenching. Still real. Still a travisty of what goes on as we speak. Wars started by men who never ho for money we never see😢😢😡😡
Yup....I was 17....
Fuck yeah.. that comment takes me back... thanks
This song is a masterpiece. I still blast it to this day. N I'm 50 🤣😂 I was 19 when this album dropped. Sat 7th row center stage at starwood amphitheatre when they came to Nashville when they toured for this album. Ticket cost me 17.50 n those days of cheap tickets are long gone.
Casting couch: “hot ebony has an eargasm reacting to metallica one”

😂😂😂
Damn that's hot

😂😂😂
It’s an insanely good song. It still gets me when I hear it and I’ve heard it hundreds of times over the years.
But, it"s lack of BASS
Carlos David Jaimes doesn’t need it
@@lillliillliliizz485 fuck u bruh, bass is the shit that gives power to metal, i didn't really like this album untill i found "And Justice For *JASON*"
“He is a product of your profession, not mine...”
Get that beautiful lady some drums! I’ve seen a dozen reactions to this song and this was my favorite. She went from wanting to headband to being submerged in the story, back to rocking, back to the story. Loved the expressions and the emotion! By the way, I’m Metallica all the way,,, nobody better!
If you didn't hear the lyrics fully, I would strongly suggest at least a couple more listening sessions. This song is simply incredible. IMO, this is one of the greatest rock anthems ever written. A metal masterpiece.
Her reaction to the fast bits were just pure joy to watch. The attempted air drums were great as well.
This is a reaction by Metallica on a old movie and book called "Johnny got his gun" The clips are from that movie
The book is great. Read it.
Movie was banned by the US Gvt. Because they considered it a protest anti war propaganda.... I bought a copy on ebay for 39 bucks...... Around 1997..... Sold it fot 69.... Winner
@@viclagina347 The movie is almost fucking impossible to find and watch digitally especially if you live in Finland like me but gladly somehow I got my hands on it digitally
Metallica owns the rights to the movie . They had to buy it to use the movie in their video
This is the greatest of ALL thrash metal songs, ever written. This song is the one that got me into the genre. In the early 80's I was into the "hair bands", and ... I had disregarded "thrash-bands" as 'over-distorted-screaming noise'.
A friend of mine talked me into , actually, LISTENING to the song, and processing what I heard. I was blown away !! It was so deep, and mind blowing !! These guys actually sat down and wrote a song that required deep thought!!
I had never imagined that a thrash band could put together such a masterpiece. From that moment on, Metallica had a new fan !!
You just broke that down better than most of the "Metal Heads" that I grew up with.Great reaction!!!
This was Metallica's first official video. James Hetfield said they wanted to wait until they had something worthwhile to say. Love the video and the reaction. Thanks for sharing. 🤘🤘
Still have the VHS tape of it they sold. No other band sold the videos for songs back then.

How reaction videos should be like.....THIS.
So many people are wanting just to get their numbers up and make cash without giving two shits about the song content. Here, you took the time to listen and then share your point of view with your audience. Nice work y'all!
It’s hard to watch/listen to “One” without having teary eyes, for me at least. I’ve seen plenty of people damaged beyond repair in the Balkan wars, and it makes your chest spastic. Excellent reaction, very visceral and honest, and like someone mentioned, it’s not “fluffed up”, just to plow through and add an extra watching and a like. Please keep doing this - I’m hitting a subscribe button!
The move Johnny got his gun is one of the most gut wrenching films I have ever watched. That and Iphigenia are two of my favorite movies, they both display a discomfort you cannot look away from or find any where else in film. (that I've seen).
Metallica are masters at conveying a feeling. Their ballad songs are just awesome, and get me really emotional. My other favourite is fade to black.
Love the Western Balkans, beautiful people and countries.
The first time I watched this video I teared up.... it rammed home the futility of war and the cost to all the men and women who fight in these conflicts. Most of all I felt his helplessness at not being able to help himself or do anything about his condition. This is probably my favourite Metallica track ever.
Thankful to never had to see any combat but I did serve in the army. Gut wrenching for me and has been for years. Can only imagine how hard it impacts you. Wish you al the best... one veteran to another even if from across the pond.
Hey Tasha,
Very interesting interpretation you gave. As a Metallica fan, I can break down the ‘message’ or ‘story’ to this song/video. The movie clips in the video are from a movie called “Johnny Got His Gun” that’s about WWI. What you interpreted as ‘in between’ or a ‘coma’ was close-the patient is actually conscious the entire time. His wounds are loss of legs, arms, sight, hearing, and speech. If you remember, he was using Morse code for S.O.S. and ‘kill me.’
The band had seen the movie and wondered what it’d be like to have all senses taken away-basically a ‘piece of meat’ as drummer Lars Ulrich put it..
Well done! Great job!
@dfss csss You're 100% correct.
That rapid-fire second half of the song goes for 3 straight minutes without stopping. One of the greatest sections to any song ever.
Hands down probably THE best Metallica reaction video I’ve ever watched! When this album came out in ‘89, I felt the exact same way. Pretty much changed the way I shred the guitar! Thanks! Keep em coming!
The clips are from the movie “Johnny get your gun” but to this day one of the most moving metal songs about war and a soldiers life to current day ..
This girl is cuter than a speckled pup, and she knows good metal.
you actually had a very beautiful interpolation of this. The nurse was his girl that he left behind that helped him die. She was a true flower.
Man you spoiled me the movie :(
He didn't die. She tried to kill him and put him out of his misery and the priest stopped her. Then the priest put the blinds down on the window and locked the door. Afterwards, they never let another nurse care for him because they were afraid someone else might try. So sad part is, he lived the rest of his days trapped in his own head. Alone.
@@jasonhitchcock8911 It wasn't the priest that stopped her. It was the doctor.
@@joshburns4611 Yeah, that's right. I don't know why I said priest by mistake? Maybe it was because I was drinking and mind wasn't that clear.
You have just listened to One...now you are One of us...
Awesome reaction. Loved seeing your face and reactions during the song. One of my very favorites. Kudos to you young lady.
I Played this song for a friend that likes Pop and she asked "Why is metal always so dark and depressing?" The best answer I can give is that life is not always rainbows and kittens, Happy endings and true love. Justice and fairness often do not prevail. There is darkness and pain. Evil and tragedy. Death and loss. Singing and writing about these things (and listening to them) is an act of defiance and for those of us that love it, it is cathartic, not depressing. This is not exact but it is as close as I can come to describing something so overwhelmingly personal and emotional.
I like it when you said he is between earth and heaven. He was trapped in his own body yet could not participate in this world. Yet being aware of his situation is like him looking down from heaven.
One of the few songs on “Justice” where you can hear the bass.
That was one of the highest quality reactions I’ve ever seen, the sound was great. We’re practically neighbors,so hey from Clemson,SC.
GO GAMECOCKS!
When you know what the book/film is about, it adds so much more context to the song and you can really appreciate how deep it actually is
This song is based on a book/movie called Johnny Got His Gun from 1939. It's about a soldier who had his arms and legs blown off. His sight, hearing, and speech was destroyed as well. All he knows is pain, and the doctors are keeping him alive as an attraction. He bangs his head on his pillow in Morse Code for months saying "kill me" over and over and over. A nurse tried to do that in empathy, but is stopped. He is forced to live out his life in that situation.
This is one of my most favorite songs, and one of Metallica's best IMO.
“IM NOT DONE TALKING”, I fuckin spit out my drink 😂😂😂😂😂
Metallica one was always my favorite Metallica song growing up. But, after serving 2 tours in iraq and over a decade in the military its also my worst fear. Watching the video and listening to it damn near brings tears to my eyes, the chills remain throughout the whole thing. One of the best songs ever written.
This is the only reaction that didnt pause in between the song..👍👍👍
Your interpretation of this song is unconventional but I also find it refreshing to be honest. I always took the song to be very literal, to just be about the horror of what it would be like to exists as someone with no arms, no legs, no sight, no voice. But I think your interpretation is very plausible, to be about the sensation of helplessness in general but using this war-amps situation as a metaphor.
Ive been listening to this band for many years but I like your take on the song. Great video!
It's a BOOK called "Johnny Got His Gun." Read the book. So much more intense than the movie.
Celestial Death96 Literally, you cared enough to reply.
@Celestial Death96 You care enough to keep replying.
I don't care what your phone does. Maybe you should learn how to adjust the settings? My original reply wasn't to you.
And yes, I speak English and understand the literal AND figurative meaning of the word "literally.". You obviously have no clue.
Celestial Death96 And you. I can do this all day/week/month/year if you'd like.
These lyrics:
Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech, taken my hearing
Taken my arms, taken my legs
Taken my soul, left me with life in Hell
Are so strong, so good and are so Metallica
Best thing I ever saw was 3 black women pull up when I was working at burger King drive through cranking up Ride the lightning by Metallica!! Hell yeah!!!
One Metallica song I recommend is "Until it Sleeps". If I understand it right, Lars, wrote it due to his moms struggle with cancer.
For me, it fits my health situation.
I have toxic metal, poisoning due to removing WWI and WWII,mines and, bombs in Europe in the late 80's.
Until it Sleeps, reminds me I have to keep fighting, not only for myself, but my loved ones
It Was actually James who wrote the song. It was about his mother and her fight with cancer and her lack of medical treatment due to her Christian Science belief . That God with heal her. Its also about james struggle with god and religion. I am sure I may be missing some info. My memory is based on the VH1 behind the music with Metallica I seen some 10+ years ago.. The video for the song is amazing..
@@DeathisRedemption i think the song you're refering to here is The god that failed and not untill it sleeps.
@@Poobaya Both songs have a similar meaning, The God That Failed is more driven to the religion of Hetfield´s mom, Until It Sleeps talks more about the cancer itself.
Hope you’re ok, mate
Hang in there Jerry.
We love you man, G-d bless you
After decades of listening to this song, it still gives me
chills. I’ll be listening to this shit till the end
The 1971 movie which this song is based on is available on RUclips, called "Johnny Got His Gun".
In the movie, he was hit by a mortar round (in the original book, it was a landmine). His entire face (including eyes, ears and lower jaw), arms and legs were blown off.
Furthermore, the doctor believed due to massive brain damage, that he was unable to think or feel, and that any movements were involuntary twitches.
Not only was the doctor wrong about all of that, but for a significant part of the movie, the patient was fully awake, conscious, and as aware as someone could possibly be without the use of four of their five senses. It's a very sad and frustrating story.
My father was a Navy Corpsman from 68-88. He went from working in the burn ward of a military hospital to being attached to a Marine infantry regiment to working in a recruiting office to being a biomed tech at another naval hospital to finishing up his career in the hospital section of a Nimitz class carrier. Long after he retired and I joined the Army as a combat engineer we had a conversation about what he called the better off dead line:
As combat weapons are perfected and medical knowledge advance there is this constantly shifting better of dead line where we can save a person’s life but it leaves them in a state with little or no quality of life
The songs about a soldier who got blown up by a landmine, and his experiences afterwards.
I love rap. But you gotta give it up for music like this 👏 . Guitar Hero 3 for life 😂

I've seen quite a few of these reaction videos to this song and everyone always gets a big smile when Kirk plays his second solo. Haha!
The clips you were seeing was from a movie that he wrote the song One about , called Johnny got his gun The movie was made in 1971, I take it as men who came back from world war one with no arms no legs in the suffering they endured just to survive life after war... Lyrics land mines has taken my site taking my hearing taking my arms taking my legs taking my soul, Love the fact that you guys are appreciating people that can actually play instruments, regardless of what kind of music it is,there’s something about guitar bass drums and someone who can actually sing without autotune.. enjoying both of your reactions thanks for keeping us entertained in this crazy messed up world that’s happening now. Keep it up😀👊✌️❤️
Among the best metal ballads of all time. IMO, at the same level, I would include The Day That Never Comes, from Death Magnetic... God, those two together, followed by the Unforgivens = CHILLS and “a tiny splinter of metal” in my eyes... so many feelings, man! And you guys seem super cool and easy going. Keep the Metal filling your lives! Bless you, from Mexico City!
I’ve played that song a 1000 times or more, one of my favorite.. But watching you and listening to your perception of the meaning made me see this song differently.. When you said, “it’s giving me chills” at that very money I had chills too..Music brings people together..You guys are great!🎸🪕🎻🎺👍🏻🇺🇸
So glad you reacted to the full official video, it really sends home what this track is about.
Love that song. One of their best and a great call out of the reality of war .... there is no glory, only suffering.
Love your interpretation so I subbed & liked, this song is a masterpiece. My brother got a Metallica video tape called '2 of One' for his birthday around the late 80's, when he played it- it literally blew my mind. They played two versions of this song, the first one was a short version & then it was followed by a longer one, the 'One' you just watched. I loved the video, the music was so 'fitting' to it. I look forward to another reaction of yours, great work.
I love this! The video version of the song is unnecessarily disruptive, but I love this young couple enjoying older metal. One is one of the greatest songs of one of the greatest albums in rock history.
Describing war should ALWAYS be unnecessarily disruptive! It's the closest thing to hell on earth, and should be remembered that way as a deterrent to not enter future war's!...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇲🤠
I loved your reaction to this. I have the same reaction and virtually identical facial expressions every time I've heard this song over the last 30+ years. Really like all your videos 🤘🏼
I've always taken it as the literal landmine victim, but I can see where you're coming from with a more symbolic meaning. That's probably a good reason for an old rocker like me to watch these React videos.
I thought so too ! I get a kick out of my wife’s reactions. They are different even from my own.
Your reaction to the depth of this song was one of the greatest things I've ever seen ..........you TRULY GET IT AND APPRECIATED ITS CORE VALUES!!! This is coming from a hardcore Metallikat for the last 35 year's 👌👍👊👋👋👋👋😎✌💯💯💯💯
She is a natural at reaction vidz. She is so real. Love it
Been camping and hunting alot in Georgia , people in the country are fantastic, and the great state of Georgia, is fantastic with the pines swaying in the wind one more thing God bless America
Really enjoyed that, thanks. A truly amazing song on a musical & thematic level & heavy in every sense of the word.
Had a real casting couch vibe at the beginning
This shows a very SMART reaction. She understands the video and gets what they did with it.
I still remember when this video/song was first released on MTV (back when they actually played music videos). I was in high school and over at my good friends house. THIS song and video instantly made me a METALLICA fan !!!! \m/
The movie in the video is "Johnny got his Gun", with Jason Robards. The move and the song are diatribes on the evils of war and the physical and mental damages war does to soldiers...the move was an early 70's (I believe) anti Viet Nam (anti war) movie.
The movie is an adaptation of a 1939 book by the same name. I'm sure that the Vietnam war was a motivating factor in the production of the movie in 1971.
@@iammine8117 Was a book about WW1. we did a book report of it in high school.
You got it right. Next Metallica of a similar theme is Disposable Heroes!

Check out lars in seattle 89..guy was an animal
I like your interpretation. Basically though, the song was inspired by the film Johnny Got His Gun, which is where all the film clips are from. He's a young soldier severely injured in battle via a landmjne. He is completely cut off from all senses so he has no idea what is happening outside of his mind. And being stuck inside his mind, he doesn't know if he's awake, dreaming, etc. The only thing he has control over is the ability to move his head. The lyrics tell that story. I heard the song first and wasn't sure about the song meaning. But the video cleared it up and made the song more impactful.
Indeed.
Someone, severely inured in war, wishing he could die. Because all his humanity has been taken from him.
You guys are awesome. I love your reaction videos, and you are adorable together. Keep it up.
LMAOOOO that intro was funny as hell, you already know what the guy was doing 😭
:)
I like how you can still make your wife blush like that. Then you follow that with a Metallica video? I see you cousin 😉👍!!!
I count myself lucky that this was the first Metallica song I ever heard way way back then.
The most honest heart felt comment, well said
As James Hetfield said about this video: "I liked the fact that people didn't know what to say after they watched it..."
Sanitarium will still will always be my favorite song by metallica since I first had the pleasure of HEARING it in 1996!
That's my favorite Metallica song ever!
Video and song still makes me cry.
To me this song just explains how it feels to be suicidal.
it's baist of a novel and a movie Johny got his gun . it is a anti-war novel
i just loved your reaction towards the drums part
I commend you for not crying, I still can't make it through the video without breaking down :')
There's a great version of this story that was on a radio show in the early 1940's. It was of the "Arch Oboler's Plays" shows. James Cagney played Joe Bonham, the soldier whose inner voice you hear. Powerful shit.
The movie footage is from a 1971 movie, Johnnie's Got His Gun, an adaptation of the book.
it gives me the chills too ... it hits me right there!!!
I’ve been a Metallica fan for a long time and I really like your thoughts on this song. You really get it. For me, it’s definitely about an internal battle that he now has no choice but to fight. Great impression you got and you nailed it.
I just realized that the lars's drums start early in the music video.
Whata great way to make a reaction.
girl.... i saw the moment the song made you cry inside
Chills are exactly what you should feel.
One my favorite song of Metallica
This is one of my favorite songs from Metallica.
The song is about the terrible cost of war. It's based on the book and later movie adaptation called "Johnny got his gun" in which a WW1 Soldier steps on a mine and loses his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. He also loses his nerve endings and can no longer feel. Imagine that, being trapped within your own mind with no ability to experience or communicate with anything or anyone outside of your internal mind. The only voice he hears is the one he thinks to himself with, and over time he slowly begins to go insane from the solitude. Near the end a nurse tried to put him out of his misery, but she is stopped by the General, who locks him in a room to be kept as a freak of science for the rest of his natural life, slowly becoming more and more insane as the decades pass, never knowing if hes awake and thinking, or asleep and dreaming. For the rest of his time on earth he will be trapped in his own hell with no one there to help. It's probably the absolute worst thing that can happen to a human being. It's a real horror story.
I love it you nailed it right on !!!
One of the all time great rock songs
Everyone shit talked this album when it first came out, said they were sellouts. Now this album is regarded as one of their greats as it should be.
Jason said it best.. "yeah we sold out. Every fn seat to every fn show!" lol
