      It was really funny when they played it on the UK “Top of the pops”, and they knew it was a song of two halves, a quiet one and a brutal metal riffing half. So they were going to play the quiet half, weren’t they, the BBC is kinda scared of metal. So Jamie Theakston introduces it and it’s the second half, from the twin guitar harmonic solo! “Darkness, imprisoning me, all that I see, absolute horror!” Obviously by accident. And they get to the end and Theakston and the audience look shell shocked! They are not ready for “Buddadabudda-Chang budda-Chang budda-Chang!” Hetfield monster riff. “Ooh er! Says Theakston, “That’s a bit heavy for me!”

    This video is really unsettling. I remember seeing it for the first time on MTV when I was around 5 years old, ('89) and it creeped me out then and still does. Metallica caught shit over making a video - MTV was considered "selling out" to quote unquote 'real' metal bands and fans. This is the video Metallica came out with. People were on the fence about the movie scenes interrupting the song so they made an alternate video of just the band playing in a warehouse. This is the REAL video, the one that has more significant meaning.

    As others have mentioned its an anti-war novel from 1939 about a guy hit by an artillery shell losing his arms, legs, all his face (ears, eyes, teeth, tongue), and most of his lower groin area. His mind, however, is perfectly functional. He is a prisoner in his own body, fed through tubes, given air. He realizes he can communicate via morse code and asks for help, drifting between reality and fantasy (as he has nothing to base when he's awake or asleep). He asks to be put in a glass case and toured around the world to show the horrors of war, when the military declines, he asks to be killed. They decline that request too. It ends with him knowing he will live the rest of his natural life trapped in his prison.

    I'm happy to see this. I saw another father/daughter reaction to this video in which the daughter just didn't care at all. Understandable since Metal is an acquired taste, especially in these days when the genre is not nearly as popular as it was back when Metallica was good. Still, your daughter is so much more receptive to your tastes, which is such a beautiful thing. Many families, especially these days, tend to not connect anymore, and it's almost like we're all just strangers to each other. You two will be able to share these memories of listening to this together for years to come. Take it from someone who was never able to connect: It is hell being alone, in many ways as hellish as the soldier in this music video experiences. Never take each other for granted!

    Alright, I just have to say that this song is in no way mainstream because it isn't a 2 minute, catchy song. To me it is one of the most beautifully written metal songs even to this day. The guitar intro captures the aesthetic perfectly and every other part from the lyrics to the aggressive breakdown to the drum solo interlude to the outro solo, every part has a role in the song that no other metal band has been able to capture quite like them.

    I have 13 different recordings of this song, in its single form alone, all the way from little 3" CDs in card sleeves to 12" picture discs (Mint, NRFB!), unique foreign issues and the "2 of One" VHS! I think it was the first song I learned to play on guitar (never anywhere near as well as Kirk of course). Like I've said before, Justice was my first album too, and remains a firm favourite.
    They won a grammy for this song, and yes, I would say it helped propel them from darlings of thrash metal to mainstream metal monsters. There's a reverse snobbery in metal fandom where bands are punished for becoming popular. People equate "popular" to "mainstream", and then surmise that mainstream is the antithesis of cool. Some even say a band has "sold out" just because their latest album went platinum. What nonsense is this? I think this is very unfair.
    Anyway, I don't think you mentioned it, but an interesting fact is that they actually bought the entire rights to the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" just so they wouldn't have to keep paying royalties!
    Great reaction as always guys. Keep them coming!

      One-Eye bs, you can hear Cliff great on those albums, the only way you can’t hear it is if you don’t, a typical music fan might not hear it but anyone that plays or understands music will have no issues.. bass played a lesser part in their music after Cliff but it’s still prevalent if you’re actually listening.. plus the focus of Metallica has always been guitars and drums because James and Lars are the writers of 99.9% of it all..

    • @davidvied2507
      @davidvied2507 5 лет назад +1

      TubetakerBHV the real reason the bass is non existent on AJFA is because of the frequencies of the mix, James guitars are scooped with the mids taken out, so it’s high gain with a heavy bottom, the bass gets lost because it occupies the same space, and with James ego during that period and being the main writer he’s obviously not gonna bend. Plus Metallica has always been all about guitars and drums, James and Lars drive the ship, they aren’t gonna let anyone really shine beyond themselves.. hence even clipping Kirks wings on the St Anger album with no solos.. they were huge egotistical asshats until that point and almost lost their band because of it

      My uncle was the same way, but far more closed-minded. It's the cross between his time as a cop as well as the military-style upbringing that grandpa raised him by.
      You know, that "Yes Sir!, No Sir!, Can't have any fun with a stick up your ass Sir!" 😒😒
      And no, I'm most definitely NOT knocking our military personnel. I have the highest respect for them. Our military personnel put their asses on the line every single day to ensure we have the freedom we enjoy.
      In fact, my grandpa was a WW2 vet. He served on a carrier, as the CMO as he said on the VERY rare times he talked at all about his war-time experience, but he never stated whether he was in the Atlantic or Pacific fleets.

    I've heard the bass-enhanced versions of all the songs off Justice, and it's strange, because I appreciate them and think they are better songs, but I still like the originals more because that's just the sound I heard when I fell in love with each song. I'd be interested to hear what Juliette thinks of Orion, and what her reaction to a Metallica instrumental would be. Or heck any instrumental at all. Hearing a song that doesn't have lyrics can make for an interesting reaction, especially for someone that is unfamiliar with instrumentals.

Creeping Death. What better way to learn the exodus from biblical history. Of course view point of a plague, but non the less an amazing song ,message, and epiphany. When i realized the connection. Wow!

  • @garyblackburn849
    @garyblackburn849 5 лет назад +3

    I personally give it a 100 in your meter. It is my favorite Metallica song by a long shot.
    One thing I wanted to comment on: when you said he was sending Morse code wanting to die he might have used a finger. He had no arms or legs, he was a blind deaf/mute with a head and torso. He was using his head jerks to send the Code; that's why sometimes you see him jerking his head up and back down quickly, to form letters.
    As to what others have commented on, I am torn between using this video as a reaction, as opposed to the studio version. The song is better to listen to on the studio, the video is better to give context to the lyrics and the message. I would probably lean towards studio version with lyrics as a reaction, but watch the video on your own after.

    My favorite Metallica tune is a tie between Damage, INC, and For Whom The Bell Tolls. Cliffs distorted bass intro on that one is effin sick!! Check out the live version from 1986. Cliff Burton was such a cool dude. He brought a smile to everyone face everyday. There is also a video called Cliff Burton Bass Solo, where he is shredding on a $3000 Rickenbacker bass. But what is even more amazing is in the live video of For Whom The Bell Tolls he is playing a $200 Aria Pro II bass. Pretty much considered a cheap garage banger, but in Cliff hands .... So AWESOME!

    You don't hear any bass here not because of Jason Newstead, but because Lars Ulrich was such a shit sometimes - Jason came into studio first, recorded all the bass tracks, impressing the studio stuff very much with his playng...and then came Lars and simply erased it! Well, that's what they say anyway, but the truth is, tey were always too hard on Jason, always trolling and abusing him - which he clearly didn't deserve...
