    Fade to Black would be a good one for you to react to. It's got a lot of beautiful guitar work that you'd not expect from a "metal" band, goes through several movements like classical (A hallmark of Metallica's first three albums), and has a sad tone despite actually being an uplifting story about someone contemplating suicide, and then changing their mind.
    Master's message of the LIES that lead people into drug addiction also has a undertone related to religious addiction many people miss. Both peddle lies to keep people on their knees in servitude, "consuming the product" as it were. "Where's the dreams that I've been after? You promised only lies". People even bullshit themselves into it with the classic "it could never happen to me". A harsh truth is that it could happen to anyone.
    Wizard's first rule: People are dumb, they'll believe something because they want it to be true, or worse are afraid it might be true.
    George Carlin: And that's why we bullshit ourselves.
    But it's something about early Metallica in general where they would take subjects -- suicide, drug addiction, death -- and actually treat them in respectful, and often uplifting and inspiring ways. That's why as a teen and/or young adult at the time those albums came out it was so infuriating when people were protesting saying this type of music glorified these things; because the dirtbags predators trying to make a name for themselves as "moral guardians" never even bothered listening or understanding the lyrics they were criticizing.
    Kind of like when the New York Times called Run DMC's lyrics degrading and horrifying, as they're singing about how you should stay in school and go to college (not a joke) and how pathetic dropouts were (also not kidding) or baking Duncin Hines cakes. (REALLY not f***ing kidding). Real threatening dangerous stuff right there.
    Kind of like today. More things change, the more they stay the same. Can't blame the parents, or preachers, or politicians, or the individual... or the constant shoveling of dung society as a whole heaps atop the average person. No, let's blame it all on music, TV, and video games.

    • @BlackieNuff
      @BlackieNuff 5 лет назад +3

      Mmm, no. Fade To Black does NOT tell of any reconsideration.
      The song speaks about contemplating, attempting, and succeeding at suicide.
      "No one but me can save myself BUT IT'S TOO LATE"
      "Now I can't think, think why I should even try"
      "Yesterday seems as though it never existed"
      "Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye... goodbye"
      The "changing of mind" you are thinking of is from all the FANS who were in that dark place seriously thinking about ending their lives, and then reconsidered suicide upon hearing the song.

      Yesterday seems as if it never existed -- aka it wasn't that bad, I'm over it.
      Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye. -- telling death goodbye, not the world.
      The previous line, "Now I can't think. think why I should even try" -- try to save himself, or kill himself?
      Although it's not even about suicide, it's about starting over from scratch, a fresh start... after having a guitar amp stolen. Is it even worth the effort.

    • @BlackieNuff
      @BlackieNuff 5 лет назад +1

      Hmmm. I never thought of it that way. I suppose it makes more sense that way, lol. I assumed the song ended tragic and that is what made the fans think "whoa, maybe I won't", but your explanation sounds more likely to inspire a change of heart.
      My bad. :-P

    • @jerrycampbell5010
      @jerrycampbell5010 5 лет назад +2

      "No one but me can save myself, but it's too late. Now I can't think why I should even try." He can't think of a reason to even try saving himself. It's too late for that.
      "Death greets me warm" means that he feels as though death is embracing him and welcoming him, like an old friend. He is saying goodbye to the world and going with death. It's very straightforward.
      Even the title, "Fade to Black," is a reference to dying; everything going black.
      I know that James was upset about a stolen guitar amp at the time, but the song isn't literally about a guitar amp. James took the depression that he was feeling over the incident and used it as inspiration to write a very dark song.

    • @BlackieNuff
      @BlackieNuff 5 лет назад +3

      @ Jerry Campbell
      I knew it! After looking over Knight's interpretation again, and actually listening to the song for my self again, I see his version is just a snowflake's spin on the actual "message". Nice effort to candy-ass it, but no dice.
      Well, I'm back to believing it to be about suicide, and following through on it. As I always had, as it always was, and still is.
      Thanks Jerry. :-D

    Great video, "Fade to Black" is their best song (IMHO). Master of Puppets is a very close second though followed by Dyers Eve. Great analysis, I was so relieved she didn't get the "Chop your breakfast on a mirror" line. The first solo (played by James by the way) is the high and the second solo is the crash and frantic search for more. She's a smart cookie, soon she'll be wearing a leather rocker jacket and getting skull tattoos... LoL!

    This song is a genius masterclass of how lyrics and music can come together to tell the whole story. It is pure genius. How, as you alluded to, the music goes with the lyrics so well. The crazy crave of the drugs and finally getting the hit ( the beginning ) then the dreamy high as the drug hits you ( the slower more melodic middle ) then you come crashing down again craving more and more until it takes over your life to the point of death ( the finale ). I keep saying it because its true, its just a pure masterclass of music and lyrics gelling together perfectly. Genius, pure genius.

    Just started watching this video and have it paused just when the song kicks in, and I have to say I am so glad you improved the way you record the audio. I am also so glad you didn't get offended when I suggested you do something about it a little while ago.
    While I have your attention maybe check out The Warning - Dust to Dust: ruclips.net/video/TeIbG8nkOiU/видео.html . An extremely talent band of teenage sisters (Now 19,17, 14) who got their start by cover "Enter Sandman- Metallica" on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/1boUYB9LFJY/видео.html when the were 14, 12 and 9. Have since released 3 albums, have two songs on the Rock Band video game, opened for Def Leppard and the Killers, and have played many large rock/metal festivals featuring many large rock/metal acts.
    They are mostly in not totally fan funded through Patreon, Kickstarter, GoFundMe and other crowdfunding platforms. They have turned down many lucrative offers by record companies a, talent tv shows, Disney etc., because they do not want to be prepacked, autotuned processed Barbie Dolls. When asked by a record exec if they would rather play in front of 12000 people or 12 they responded by say they would rather play in front of 12 if it meant they could record what they want, play what they want and wear what they want. In spite of not having a record label they do play in front of crowds much larger than 12000. Such integrity is rare especially for people so young.

    Thanks for these reactions! I appreciate the amateur touch that you have. Meaning, you show authentic curiosity and enthusiasm whereas some reaction videos here are getting boring because they get too pro and lose something essential with it. Good work!
    I would also like to make some recommendations:
    Rush: YYZ (Live in Rio). It is one of THE instrumental prog songs out there. Yet, there's a choir of thousands of people. 😉
    For heavier stuff, check The Bee by Amorphis. That's a song telling a tale from the national epic of Karelia and Finland so it has some history and poetic narrative for ya guys. 😘
    Then there's Steve Vai. Have a look at the live version of Tender Surrender to see what it means to make love to a guitar. 😅

    It's a bit amazing to me how dated that reference to "chopping your breakfast on a mirror" actually is. I mean, that was such a common, well known image (a meme, if you will) in the 80s that it was immediately recognizable as being a cocaine reference to just about anyone, even if they'd never done drugs or had any direct contact with drug culture. But I've seen several reactions to this song in recent months where that image meant nothing to the people reacting to it and they didn't get it. I don't know that this is a particularly meaningful observation, but I thought it was kind of interesting.

    • @ChemicalReactions

      I think it's because cocaine was everywhere in the 80s, where as now heroin is taking a back seat to meth. Kinda strange to think about, but you can almost record decades by which drug is 'king' at the time.

    The fact that she mentioned not completely "connecting" to it YET, maybe needing to listen to it a few times in different settings, is amazing. I went through a bunch of genre-phases in my childhood, every time I just discarded everything else. Each time I went from completely rejecting a genre, to enjoying it, to thinking I was "over" it. Now, I'm revisiting the stuff I used to love, and songs I never thought I'd like, and I'm discovering how much amazing music humans have made -- but it took me 30+ years to start being as open minded as she is.

      Pintsize I totally agree she should definitely sample some power metal but even with that it's better to start with something more accessible & maybe a bit more commercial like Helloween or Gamma Ray and THEN go deeper. Whenever I test out Power Metal on someone I always start with "I want out" and if they like that then I'll gradually get them to Keeper of the Seven Keys, lol. Too much too soon sometimes puts them off.

    You should introduce her to some of the live Cliff Burton bass solos that are on youtube. He was way ahead of his time and inspired so many people. To me he was to the bass what Jimi Hendrix was to guitar. They both died when they came onto the scene and began shaking up what people thought was the norm... they pushed the instrument into new areas. His presence I think is a good part of the reason why the best Metallica albums are the ones he was involved with. Some of his influence was still in And Justice even though he was dead by then.

    I've always thought of the sections of the song as like, the sudden introduction is the addictive hook, the first verses are the addiction, and then when it's cry of "Master! Masterr.. masterrrr...." is fading away it's like a withdrawal, the call of the master is fading, until finally you can have a happy, peaceful life again. Things are good, that soft, melodic portion there. But the call is never truly gone. It comes back, a relapse, looking to the master again for those promises, which you know are false, and you feel the judgement of the world laughing at your cries, but you can''t imagine anything else being able to fix you. So you need more, the high picks up, and up, and up with the solo at the end, faster and faster until there's nothing else. It's a life of death, but your master can help you die. The master has claimed another, and now rules you too.
