@@thepharmacist4651 that's how many tickets were sold. More people came and he said they decided to just let the gates open. So there's more than 500,000.
The stage itself was even shaped to help amplify the sound. Also, estimates of the amount of people there range between 750,000 and 2 million. Nobody is quite sure. lol
Concerts this size always have delay speaker towers in the audience. The sound coming out of those speakers are delayed so that the sound coming from the front of house PA matches as it reaches the back of the audience, otherwise the sound would have an echo effect for the people at the back.
1.6 million people showed up for this concert. One of the biggest in rock history. Every song they do here is a banger but my favorite from this show was 'Creeping Death". Imagine what it felt like to hear over a million Russians yelling "Die! Die! Die!" with James & the boys. :-)
Here's an AMAZING reaction. Three years ago, at the age of 50, I discovered Metallica. Now I grew up with an awareness of them, but I doubt I could have named one song the did until my discovery. I highly recommend their "Through the Never" movie. I enjoyed that movie alot.
That short and sweet intro, before ENTER SANDMAN kicks off, is ACTUALLY Ennio Morricone's track - The Ecstacy Of Gold (METALLICA DID A COVER OF THIS SONG, DURING DEATH MAGNETIC's TOUR, at them concert at Copenhagen (Denmark), on 2008/2009!!!!!!!!)
Monsters Of Rock tour!!! If I remember right, the Russian government used their military for crowd control, but you can see the troops saying "F" it and rocking out, too... Nice reaction! Peace! Cheers!!!
@Scott ?????? No Gorbachev led his people to freedom, Reagan had nothing to do with it, He was just along for the ride. In fact the UK had more to do with the fall of the Iron Curtain than the US did
This event was historical for the time. 1.6 Million people....and this is only 3rd on the all time list of crowds at an open air concert. #1 is Rod Stewart at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a crowd of 3.5 Million in 1994. #2 was Jean Michel Jarre in 1997 also in Russia, like that Metallica show, with 3.5 Million.
Actually there were 1.6 million people in the crowd that day (and most of them came just for Metallica). The Soviet Union was about to fall and the concert was held on a former military testing ground. Pantera, AC/DC and a local band, The Black Crowes, also played. One of the biggest concerts known to mankind. It was a celebration. 51 people died due to pressure, most likely. The military first didn’t know how to react to the crowd’s behavior, but as you can see, the stopped hitting and joined the crowd during Metallica’s set. A truly memorable, important and magical day.
1.6 million tickets sold, the crowd was over 2 million. Because how are 10,000 troops going to say no to almost a million people who turned up to stand at the back and watch for free?
I've been front row center at a Metallica concert General admission Took me awhile to make it to thee front but I did before the first song and never left
What you hear at first is the theme to the Clint Eastwood movie The Good, The Bad , and The Ugly. It's worth noting that my favorite hockey team uses this song ( the studio version) as their entrance theme when they hit the ice to start the game
I've heard numbers from a couple million to nine million. It's somewhere in between i guess but still the biggest happening in recorded history! Thanks for playing!
Love watching you guys enjoy the music I grew up with and going at it with an open mind. Tasha you are so pretty, my love to you both, thanks for the videos.
They were so good live. That's far from their best...go back in time from here and watch pretty much any live performances of their best songs. The skill to make that fast tempo, organized wall of sound live, and absolutely nail it, amazes me every time.
You have to understand these people were told to stay in line and not to express yourself for decades. Now all the sudden Metallic is pulling this pen up excitement out. Really cool stuff to see! BTW.... I love the girl's reaction to this. She's adorable, expecially when she headbanged, haha.
this is what happens when a repressive government has the cold war end, the wall come down, and allows it's people to listen to rock and roll bands from around the world! I know a song no one has really reacted to it was spyhunter by project 86 and even has a interesting video that has a cliffhanger ending if you could react to it that'd be great

The Russian army was there for crowd control. And, used helicopters for crowd control. Once the music started many of the soldiers just went nuts and joined the concert. This was held at an empty airfield. You know the crowd is big when they are the horizon.
Without this song and the black album I don't know if I would have started my love affair with Metallica at the time I did. The two things that stand out to me about that album are 1) a comment I heard from Scott Ian/Antrhax about saying yes, Metallica sold out, they sold out every show after that album hit and 2) once you do their back catalog from this album you will notice how they changed in style but you can also tell someone actually did the hard work on getting James to sing better and producing their sound better.
