    1:10 and the tears already start... I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 50 now and have had battled depression all my life yet this song is my life line...

      @@seelenwinter6662 this is their second album, not their first. also, usually the 3rd or 4th album is the best. the first 2 albums are usually used to find their own real sound, rather than trying to imitate other bands. most people also get better at writing songs as they write more songs, and get better at their instruments, and learn from their experience of the previous songs they've written. in metallica's case its more of the latter, where they just got better at their instruments and better at writing songs...they always had their own sound. but yeah, usually the 3rd or 4th album is their best if youre a good band. a one hit wonder band will obviously only have one good album, their first.

    Story behind this song: in early 80's Metallica was on the beginning of career. One day someone stolen all the equipment of band and they were nearly to give up. They wrote this song after all of that for the new album. Song is much more darker than a real story.

      I don't know....maybe? I think the early albums were recorded with a Mark III head. A buddy of mine had a dead mint Mark III 1/2 back in 1998 and it had that early Metallica tone....just dripping with it. I wasn't interested in the amp at the time....but knew it was a killer piece. Looking back now....I wish I bought it and just saved it.....I'm sure it's worth a tone of cash. I lost a Soldano SLO100 1/2 stack (in snake skin). $1800. When I came back the next day....she was gone!

    • @Dalonghair
      @Dalonghair 4 года назад

      Jeremy Hanson
      They were depressed by the theft of their valuable equipment and these lyrics are quite clearly a suicide note. That’s not to say any of them were suicidal, but the depression they felt ended up being influential for this song.
      Regardless, it’s a song _about_ suicide, not glorifying or capitalizing on it.

    @gregorykenfield3134 4 года назад +24

    I agree with your Dad...this is also my favorite Metallica song, and arguably my favorite album (this or Master of Puppets).
    You correctly identified the meaning of the song by the end...it deals with suicide. I once read an interview with the band from about the period when this song was released...in the interview, one of the band members said something to the effect that they liked to write about things that frightened them (such as depression and suicide, in this case). The song fades out at the end (fades to black) to signify the person committing suicide and dying.
    One minor correction...I have found that many reaction channels make the mistake of describing a song as "getting faster" in tempo when it isn't...the song gets LOUDER, but the tempo is unchanged (until the end section, in this case). What we're describing is a change in dynamics, not tempo.
    God bless!

    This song is about being depressed due to the band’s equipment being stolen in Boston. They were supposed to leave the next day to continue their European leg of the tour. Anthrax stepped up and lent the band some equipment to continue. This is a story that James told in regards to the song. Ride the lightening was a very dark album. Kirk stated that the band was depressed because they were homesick. The album was recorded in Denmark if I’m not mistaken. I read all of this in a blog written from interviews taken from the band. Please excuse me if I’m wrong in any of these occurrences.

    The band has said that this song is about an incident early in their career maybe when most or all of their band equipment was stolen including their favorite Marshall amps.
    The vocals are going (I think) through a studio audio effect called a reverse gate where the note fades before the note instead of fading out at the end of the note. When I was your age I wanted to know stuff like that and I hope you do too.

    Fade to Black is a song about depression, leading to suicide. The song starts by a person asking what the true meaning of life is, and eventually coming to the conclusion that there is none. From this they spiral deep into a point of depression and cant get out. Eventually they go to end everything, ut as they do so they realize the meaning of life and doesn't wish to die, but it is to late and the Reaper is at the door. As they die they realize life is worth living and shouldn't be thrown away, but they are already dying and cant do anything but say goodbye to the world they know, and embrace what comes next. Suicide is no joke, and I hope no one ever has to think about it, but I know my hope is lost, but to you reading this, know that you matter, to me and many more you matter and deserve to live.

And one of the first songs by them I ever heard...an uncle of mine gave me a whole load of mix tapes that he'd made (this would've been around 1990), and this song was on it. I was...9 years old. And I was stunned. This song is one of the few that I'd heard back then that made me actively WANT to learn how to play the guitar (and I eventually did), just because of how musical and intricate the intro and solos and stuff were.

    In the song james is singing of TWO deaths: the first is the spiritual death of himself that follows a life of pain, leaving him an empty shell with only his agony to fill it with. The second death is essentually his suicide.

    "Fade to Black" is a song and the first power ballad by American heavy metal band Metallica, released as the first promotional single from its second studio album, Ride the Lightning. The song was ranked as having the 24th best guitar solo ever by Guitar World readers.
    Ride the Lightning was their 2nd album(1984). But The lyrics itself suggest it's a *story of a man contemplating, and eventually committing suicide,* as I recall.
    *Remember,* with hard rock and heavy metal, expect many songs that can be based on stories with deep lyrics, some might even be based on true events, some might give off positive messages.
    Take Megadeth for example with their song "*Of mice and men."* it basically tells Dave Mustsine's life from his early career as a musicians, about his past struggles and life events, saying live your life, live it well and make the right decisions in So doing.
    So, if you want, try to look up the song/music video Megadeth - *of mice and men.*
    Very good tune 😎

    The layering of one's voice is James hetfield the lead guitarist but he's really the background guitarist he sings and it was laid over so that means it was done in the studio to sound like an echo it's only his voice

    You guys nailed the meaning. Watch James Hetfield absent. He was raised in a strict Christian scientist home where family is all and total rejection of modern medicine. Then his dad up and split unexpectedly, leaving his mom to handle everything. They sunk into total poverty…then his mom got Cancer. And being a Christian Scientist, she refused any treatment, and he watched her just die away, pretty heavy!!! After that, he was pretty much homeless, crashing on friends couches, and very determined to make it big. Really check out James Hetfields story!!!!

    From what I heard, the band was kicked out of their manager’s house for breaking stuff and drinking all of his wine in his cabinet. James (the singer) and Lars (the drummer) were obsessed with death at the time and James fell into a depression and felt like he just wanted to kill himself so I guess this song was about him committing suicide. Kinda like a musical suicide note. That’s just what I read 🤷🏼‍♂️. Not sure how true it is. That’s something you can look up to see just how true it is. If it is true, I’m glad he never committed suicide and they’re still bringing albums out to this day. I saw them in concert in 2018 to promote their newest album. What an awesome show.

    Honestly I think it is great that kids of your age in todays world are reacting to music like this and further back in the years because really it helps you learn about how music and other things were like for older people, music in the 70's for instance was really different compared to what music is today there is no heart in todays music which is kind of sad but back then groups sang with all their heart and feelings, listen to Led Zeppelin for instance Stairway to Heaven for instance lyrics version im sure you will understand it and really listen to the vocals and instrumentals of it im sure your parents raised you well and you will feel the music inside

    as far as metallica goes you cant really go wrong on picking a song to react to 'one' 'sad but true' 'master of puppets' 'for whom the bell tolls' 'welcome home(sanitarium)' ' the unforgiven(1 2 or 3)' 'enter sand man' 'the day that never comes' 'spit out the bone' 'low mans lyric' all great songs to get going with. . all great musical peices, metallica are masters of change ups and melodic rifts.. and all with deep lyrical content. . metallica truly are the mountaintop of metal

    Missing one inside of me, means he's lost his self.
    It's a song purely about depression and how it takes away the person you once were.
    It's one of those songs like 'Don't give up,' that's saved a lot of people. That's the power of music and literature. It helps you feel that you're not alone.

    This song is about suicide.
    When it came out there was some controversy over it and some parents accused Metallica of promoting suicide, but the band members said that it was exactly the opposite.
    By making a song about the pain someone suicidal feels, they wanted to bring attention to it.
    And they wrote this song they were not even 21.
    The guys are musical geniuses.
