    Exaclty, you can hear a through line from one tansition to the next, and once you've heard the song 10's of time, you hear it coming. Just like when you watch one of your favorite movies you've seen 10s of times, you can't wait for the next scene that you remember, is your favorite., and the build up is money.

    This is my favorite SOAD song because of the contrasting aggression and melancholy. The harmonies are so beautiful and so human that they always touch my heart. Great analysis, Bethany, especially your breakdown of the transitions. A fun followup to this would be Halocene's outstanding cover featuring guest singers Violet Orlandi and Lauren Babic. They put just enough polish on it to get them 13M views. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/vUpcCN_PWYw/видео.html

      That’s great. Means you didn’t have to wait for new releases, you came in with a big library already there. Somehow, Nirvana passed me by completely. Hadn’t even heard a song until I heard smells like teen spirit and I lost my damn mind in nirvana for years and decided to join a band and became a pretty shitty guitarist. Just good enough to charm an emo girl was what I aimed for and just about what I got. Barely.

    The original title of this song was "Suicide" but the studios, somewhat understandably, couldn't allow this. So Serj, tongue in cheek, named it " CHOP" as in "CUT OUT" and "SUEY" as in "SUICIDE"-- with a reference at 2:00 eating Chinese takeout visibly unamused.

      This is actually not the case, although I always thought it was i.e. the studio not allowing it. Serj said that it was the bands decision to change it in his autobiography. He preferred the new title and as well as the original not being a great title anyway, he said it was because the song isn't about Suicide anyway.

    • @RFC3514
      @RFC3514 Месяц назад +1

Rick told him to go into his library and randomly choose a book. If I remember correctly, Serj blindly chose a Bible and randomly fell on this line. I love SOAD and Rick Rubin, and it is yet another cool story about them.

      I think you’re projecting a bit, based on your own memories around that time lol. I’m not American and I didn’t get that sense from this album. Frustration, anger, sadness sure, but SOAD has always been a political band singing about all the greed and pain in the world

    My mom died when this song came out. Didn't know the meaning or context, but the singing of "when angels deserve to die".... it was gut-wrenching. This song will always bring me to tears! SOAD is a brilliant group with incredible songs and messages.

      It's about blaming those that have suffered mental illness, drug addiction, or anything really, and committed suicide as if they deserved it in some way. They make a LOT of commentary on life and politics in their lyrics and this points to how we don't show enough love and compassion to those that suffer in life. Rather those people get blamed for their situation.
      Just noticed you said 'didn't' so you probably already know but I'll reply anyway in case others don't.

    The producer of this track said that Serj couldn't come up with an ending for the song, so he took him into his personal library and told him to just pick up any book and flip to a random page and read it to get his juices flowing. Serj happened to pick up the Bible and flipped to the passage: "“Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! ' And having said this he breathed his last”. He liked the phrase so much, and it fit the theme of the song so well, that he just took the words verbatim and created that crazy ending.

    All the members of SoaD are ethnic Armenians. They all were going to the same Armenian private school in Hollywood and they absolutely are bringing Armenian ethnic traditions into their music and intertwining those with all the Nu/Alt Metal, Prog elements etc. They have broken the fifteen-year-old radio silence to record a couple of songs when there was war between Armenia and Turkiye-backed Azerbaijan. I may be mistaken, but I think that they have also played a free show in the capital Yerevan in support of their people.
    Daron Malakian - the guitarist and back-vocalist/later co-vocalist - has created his own project after SoaD has stopped actively writing together named Scars of Broadway. You may want to check out the music video for the composition "Lives" for some Armenian imagery and lyrical themes.
    Nice reaction btw. You hardly ever disappoint.

    fun fact: the song use to be called suicide, but the label really didn't like that and made them change it since it was always going to be the single. They came up with the name Chop Suey because the song is very choppy ( i'm pretty sure this is right, feel free to correct me) and suey because......suicide, suey, get it? It's also why there is that random ass scene of everyone eating chop suey in the video.
