Imagine you're living in some backwoods village and out of boredom as you dry clothes or whatever are watching the guy who has been chopping firewood for a while go at it. Then all of a sudden and without any warning, upon making contact with the next log the guy gets instantly turned to red paste and shot backwards with the force of a point-blank cannon blast, his detached hands still gripping the burrowed axe as smoke comically rises from the stubs.

Say what you will about his fitness to advise about how and when to use the Devil Axe, I think Mangs certainly has the most footage of anyone on RUclips regarding it, both successes and hilariously timed backfires
Although if I may offer some constructive criticism, any video about the Devil Axe is incomplete without Shadow Dragon's own translation of the Devil Axe village dialogue:
"Oh, ho ho! Don't you look young and full of life! Such a warm smile here deserves a nice reward. Here, take this axe- this EVIL abomination of an axe! Beware! Its blade drinks blood and devours flesh. I'd hate to see you come to any harm!"
Maybe review the history of support conversations? They gained a MASSIVE boost in focus in Awakening and Fates, after all.

In thracia 776 there is a joke character named Marty. Marty is a brigand with growths that guarantee he caps luck and constitution, this allows him to wield the devil axe without speed penalty and without the chance of it back firing. Negative x negative =positive

uh, no. 90% of this comment is wrong. marty isn't GUARANTEED to cap anything; he just has a very high chance of capping luck and con due to his high growths (50% and 75%). there's a difference between "guaranteed" and "extremely likely". not taking a speed penalty also doesn't mean shit when you have 0 base speed and a 15% speed growth. marty is never doubling anything whether he gets weighed down or not, and with his base skill of 0 and growth rate of 10% coupled with the devil axe's hit of 50, good luck getting him to hit the broad side of a barn with that thing. also, do you not know how math works? the devil axe's backfire rate is 21-luck%, not 20-luck%. you always have a minimum backfire rate of 1% no matter what. even the luckiest characters have a very small but very real chance of getting fucked when they use it.
I.E. The only weapon that allows walls to kill people.

Since you mentioned that the Devil Axe's chance of backfiring in PoR was unchanged, that ironically means you can use it as a regular axe without any risks if your luck is high enough, as the cap is 40.
Remember in the PME he gave the self made "Jagen" (the cavalier he JUST promoted) with almost 0 luck a devil axe then threw him into a boatful of enemies? I as hell do

Ive always imagined the devil axe not hurting the user via magic or anything, I just imagine them missing their shot and acidentally hitting themselves with the axe.

Each weapon type should have a "Devil" branch of weapons - they did that in the total overhaul "Dreams Of Five" for Fire Emblem 7.

As an update, we can use the devil axe once again in Fire Emblem Three Houses.
In this game, the devil axe does not have a backfire percentage, instead, it only deal ten points of damage to the user every time he use it.
In this game it could be obtainable at the Pagan Altar, in the DLC, but it also can be obtainable from a drop of an enemy at the side story "Rumored Nuptials" wich can be done between chapters 7 and 11 if you have Dorothea or Ingrid in your team.
In Three Houses, the Devil Axe is at his highest value, a total of 1,300 and has his most number of uses, 30 uses to be exactly, it also has 18 mights wich it was more damage than a silver axe, but it also has more weight, 14 weight, it also has 60 Hit and 0 Crit.
You should definitely do either a History of Jugdral or Tellius
I only use devil axe to break down walls and trees, because I can at least prevent any accidental critical hits.
I guess here's the best chance to share it, but I always thought it would be funny to see upgraded forms of the Devil Axe. Like a Demon Axe, which would have a high crit rate, but a %40 backfire rate, or a Satanic Axe, which would have a brave effect, but a %50 backfire rate.

Time for this video to be updated: Three Houses and Heroes brought this axe back, in differing ways.
In Three Houses, anyone with a D rank in axes can use it, but it has a 60% hit rate and only 30 uses, with the tradeoff being 18 might, which is raised to 21 if reforged, but it only damages the user for 10 hit points.
And in the 4.2.0 update of Fire Emblem Heroes, this is the personal weapon of Barst which during combat he gains Atk/Spd/Def/Res+4 but if he attacked it deals 4 damage to him, it is exclusive to him and when refined it gives him Wrath 3.
Literally my fav Weapon in the franchise. I love Gambling in FE!
I gave that guy a devil axe in Echoes because I didn't know if I would get any more axe weapons in the game so I just gave it to him. he's probably not dead though. hopefully. I'm a monster!
In FE7, you can use it quite safely to break walls. It hurts a lot on the backfire due to walls having 0 defense, but it means there's no enemy to deal with, and no way to crit yourself. It was super useful for gaining safe weapon exp that way.
Hate the axe, but I love using the devil sword especially with thieves
Now the Devil Axe first appeared in Shouzou Kaga's mind. It looked and worked way different than it does now. Originally, the handle of the axe had spike that you would have to impale your hands on to hold it, and every time you hit it returned the damage receive by the enemy divided by 2.
This was eventually changed, why is unknown. But for that, most are grateful.

It's really neat to learn about this somewhat obscureish weapon as well as the fact that FE7's was the best incarnation, tho i still never used the thing and probably still wont, but this video makes me tempted to try it sometime.

..........Then in Fates, they not only made it the only dark tome available in the game, but they completely nerfed the shit out of it: you can no longer critical hit, proc attack skills (such as Luna or Rend Heaven, for example), and you can't double with it, either. And funnily enough, despite all that, it still maintains being a useful weapon, I guess because the ability to restore HP with each attack is pretty overpowered

The Devil Axe in Three Houses is really great. It works like the Berserker Axe, in that it deals 10 non-lethal damage to the user after every round of combat, which actually makes it a useful strategic tool for activating HP-based skills such as Vantage, Wrath, Balthus's personal ability, and the Defiant skills.
You know, there are a lot of weapons that let me down in Fire Emblem over the years.
Killer Weapons? Eh, who needs crits anyways?
Spears? You didn't need to land that ranged attack.
Short Bow? More like "Short time in my inventory before I sell it", amirite?
But the Devil Axe? Never lets me down. It spills blood like it's hungry for it, it makes fights infinitely more exciting, and someone always regrets it when its swung.
I bet Mangs was so sad when he learned how the Devil Weapons worked in Three Houses.
What are you talking about in Echoes? That dude in the village was infinitely lucky for anyone to waste time giving him an axe. Its totally not like Alm and Celica had anything better to do. The nameless villager would have been fine.

You know, when I first saw the thumbnail before you revealed the Devil Axe, I thought it was History of Dark Magic.
Just a suggestion, but why not that be the next History Of? I mean, besides the great lore it has brought to the series, its evolution from an enemy only weapon to a player weapon, and even a glitch weapon, has been really neat in my opinion.
The devil axe has always taken that last spot in my axe user's inventory. It's only to be used when no other axe would secure the kill, and it's a do-or-die situation. It can genuinely have only 2 durability and it's effect will remain the same
I really loved this video and personally I always keep away from the Devil Axe but if I’m feeling confident in any of my Fire Emblem play throughs I might use it a bit with extra caution. Very great and informative video Mangs! I kind of wish we had more high risk/high reward weapons in the series.

Its the only attacking Staff in the game and ignores enemy Res like the old Luna tome did, but it has a chance to either hurt you instead, or heal the enemy instead.

Whenever I have a goddess idol in fire emblem sealed sword I use it all on Gonzalez then have him equip with devil axe. Results was staggering. It was like having Durban the berserker in my party.

I gave one to Ogma in FE 12 just incase there's an enemy who happens to need the extra few damage points to finish off, and I didn't feel like using a more useful weapon. I got lucky the one time it backfired, and the enemy missed, but I still had to restart that chapter when just about all my other useful characters died. I guess it really is cursed.

Aren't there Devil Swords in the earlier Fire Emblem games? Pretty sure you saw those on Enemy thieves in Mystery of the emblem.

Well, not sure how close it is to the FE11 Devil Axe, due to the weapon being totally re-tooled. I still wound up pretty much calling it Petra's personal weapon, since she's fairly good at axeplay, I gave it to her and she cleaned shop. TWO RUNS IN A ROW.

Interesting note about the Devil Sword: Marth can use it with no penalty, because his massive luck and free all+2 meant he was likely to hit 30+2 luck. Although, by the time he has it, he'll probably have the Falchion already...
Who uses Marth tho. When I play he is mostly busy visiting villages opening chests and moving at max speed towards the throne.
I usually try to use him early because his lack of promotion gains can leave him falling behind, so a few additional levels can keep that at bay to an extent.

That "strange pose" from FE9 is the T-pose: the default, unanimated state of a 3D model. It's never seen during normal play, since characters are normally always animated. Fun find!
The devil axe returns in Three Houses, but its mechanics are more similar to the ones in Fates.
I get the feeling that dread fighters who could use the Devil Ax without backfire risks were an enemy only class.
