  • Lowen is a very weird unit, unanimously consider good by the community but also seen as pretty middling. I intend to explore my feelings on FE7's third cav.
    Special thanks to ‪@JonoabboFE‬ for the sad Lowen clip from our FE7 Buy Our Units series.

    I like the comparison between oswin and lowen. Sure, part of it is because they compete over the first knight crest, but I also think they are polar opposites in every way except tanking hits. Lowen has high move, rescue drop utility and canto, but is low level with middling bases and iffy growths. Meanwhile oswin is a low move unit who is hard to rescue due to his weight, yet has great bases and a high level that makes him easy to utilize and give the knight crest. Ultimately, they end up sharing near identical positions where everyone around them needs their utility, and so there's little to no reason not to try to use them.
    This video really explains why I like lowen so much. He isn't over the top in any way, not breaking the game or anything, but he just has access to the bare minimum of almost every good tool. Canto - check. 7 move - check. Fire affinity? Check. He always has utility, despite his flaws, and I love that, as it encourages me to use a plethora of tools to strategize with him as opposed to just send him forward and win - and should he get blessed with his level ups, I'll have a beast of a paladin for later - if not, I'll still make the most of what he offers until a unit can come to take his place.

    • @shignificent
      @shignificent 10 месяцев назад

      What do the different affinities do? I still have no idea😊

    • @isuckatgaming1873
      @isuckatgaming1873 10 месяцев назад +3

      @shignificent so when you do supports with different units, the affinities give different bonuses - these include damage dealt, damage taken, avoid, critical avoid, crit chance, and accuracy. Fire affinity just happens to give the best combat bonuses of the affinities, with plus .5 attack, 2.5 accuracy, 2.5 avoid, and 2.5 critical per support level.
      Generally, the worst affinity is ice as it only gives defensive buffs. Since both attack and defense buffs only increase by half a point in level, it's best to match supports with someone who shares an affinity or similar bonuses. A dual fire support, like lowen and rebecca, gives both of then a bonus 3 damage at max rank, as compared to a bonus of 1.5 (rounded down to 1) when paired with Marcus.
      Lastly, characters who share an affinity with the tactician get a bonus 5 points to hit and avoid. That isn't exclusive to fire, so chose your affinity according to who you feel needs it most.

    This was very insightful. So many people say he's high-tier, so I used him on my first playthrough when FE7 came to Switch Online. He was so good at first, so it was easy to feed him exp, so he was my first promotion of the caveliers. But once I got Sain back he quickly overshadowed Lowen very quickly. I then decided to make him an axe-user, as I only had a trained Dorcas at that point, but he had such horrible hit rate it only made him worse lmao

    @fangiscool1 10 месяцев назад +5

    He feels mid because he generally falls off late-game. But he's considered good because he's one of the best early game units (as pointed out here) and remains solid through the mid-game. If you get lucky, he won't fall off, but if he doesn't, there's plenty of other late game units to field. Falling off doesn't make him mid or bad, but it definitely makes him feel that way

    Uhm you described him really well and the title is spot on. I love Sain and Kent as characters, but after playing HHM so many times without Lyn mode, I believe Lowen is very important if you want to clear the early game reliably and within reasonable time to keep your sanity. Also, Isadora with a body ring and an angelic robe is your best bet for a 2nd paladin by the time she joins. Lowen will get doubled by Lloyd's crew, Kent will never do meaningful damage and Sain, while being the best, might not hit doubling benchmarks. I also liked the comparison with Oswin. Very good video! Kepp going!

    I really enjoy using Lowen on my fe7 playthroughs. I think the thing that really makes him feel so meh is his poor strength since it is rare for him to kill anything. However, his defence and speed are often good enough to engage in a lot of combat without straight up one rounding everything like Marcus might making it harder for him to suffer from success and easier for him to set up kills for other project characters. Also, because he doesn't kill and still doubles, it is not too hard to train his axe rank.

    It's really funny to me that Lowen is 'slow', as in my experience with Lowen he was REALLY good - my first FE7 playthrough saw him capping speed and defense during the endgame, with plenty of respectable strength to one-round enemies hard enough I had to intentionally keep him out of some combats. This was probably helped by the fact I lost Marcus early on so he took over as my main Paladin, but I ended up having the exact opposite excitement curve and was always hype to use him as my reliable boss-killer, and specifically gave him my dragon kill in honor of his service.
    Nothing can dampen my appreciation of the yellow-armored Paladin with zero characterization. His rise to fill Marcus's spot and become indisputably my strongest unit was a glorious story.

    I really don't think the devs expected people to pretty much always skip Lyn mode, because, if you don't, both Kent and Sain look *so* much better compared to if you skip it.
    Also you can totally cheese with the arena and knights crest and enter hector hard mode with them as a 20:1 paladin which totally trivializes a lot of the game, even if you play standard from the moment you start Hector's story, which is hilarious.😂

    Lowen is pretty much a case study for value of availability. Like if he and Sain started at the same time, I cannot imagine many people would ever choose Lowen to feed experience into as Sain rarely ever feels mid. But he doesn't he has several chapters to get well-ahead of Sain and thus is generally considered the better option (assuming no Lyn mode).

  • @hadoukenfighter
    @hadoukenfighter 10 месяцев назад +3

    Honestly Lowen might never be in my "top 10 units i want to use for a run" but He rarely finds himself on the bench for me. The dude just has a nice package of high mobility and high durability, sure he isn't an offensive power house even by FE7 standards but as a certain man once said "It doesn't matter if he's not killing dozens of enemies in a turn, what matters is that he can survive being on the frontlines so he can actually obtain experience safely to become a great unit without much risk" So it ends up with Lowen being a growth unit on paper, but he's pretty consistent in regards to being able to preform his typical role of "move far, take hits, don't die" and I wish more people recognized this type of unit more often.
    Another thing that helps Lowen out is that FE7 is a game where you get better units as you progress into the game, so Lowen being one of your early game units that's going to be consistently good and with you until at least the late mid game can't be understated, for those first 4-5 chapters of the game Lowen will be your best unit not named Marcus and the third best unit isn't even close to him by a mile.

    I hate grinding and Lowen takes too long to reach ORKO for my tastes, but if you're willing to grind supports/levels Lowen is probably the best of the Knight Crest users. His supports give him sky-high offense, he's definitely the beefiest in terms of non-RES defense, and even though his SPD is somewhat sus he'll still easily double FE7's slow-ass enemies by the midgame.

    you know, my first ever impression of Lowen was... kind of bad, Sain and Kent got the experience form Lyn mode in my first playthrough, meaning they joined with way better stats than him once i got them back, then i did my "low tier" run and decided to give him a chance, and well, my experience was... underwhelming at best, i remember promoting him at 12 and he had something like 10 str and spd, he could never double nor kill and was pretty much a waste of a slot more times than not. Then i finally starting ironmanning FE7 on hard mode and my opinion definetly changed. When you don't have save states to cover your ass in case of a missplay your perception of a unit's usefulness drastically changes and suddenly Lowen's bulk and good enough bases where very needed, sword access means he can reliably fight all the early brigands and fighters, lances means he can access javelins for 1-2 range and then on promo he even gets axes for full WT control, he also got pretty stat blessed on my first attempt so that's something. so my opinion on Lowen definetly changed from when i first played FE7, do i like to use him? No, absolutely not, i'd much rather train Rebecca really, but given the options you get early game you kinda HAVE to use him otherwise you're better of Marcus soloing.

    Not FE6 because we already have good units in the early game.
    Also, I think that other training projects feels better because they don't have much comparison early on. I could argue that Erk is another Lowen, but I don't feel underwhelming using him because he is my only mage until raven's chapter.

    I'm glad Rath being able to ferry Hector and Oswin was brought up as a reason why Lowen is just serviceable/average at most things. He functions well enough and can play a utility/tank hybrid role if Lyn mode wasn't played before. If Lyn mode was played Kent/Sain just do more, Kent and Sain are more likely to double and 1 round enemies, can also rescue drop. They might be less durable but a few points of defense total over the course of the game only makes a difference if they fall short just a few hp and die. It's easy enough to play around when Oswin can hold a choke by himself most times.
    I usually play Lyn mode so I can get all hidden chapters and by wasting so much time the last couple maps in the mode get Kent/Sain up around LV8-10, and in shape to contribute immediately.

    well, honestly, i like a tank that can swoop around in the battlefield.also, i usually give all my dracoshield to him and he become insanely tanky that he can solo entire section if theres no mage. also, him not being able to double mean he got a lot of chip expierience thus make his growth twice as fast than other promoted unit. like, its insane how fast he is leveling up in my run, while he can give kill exp to other unit. but all in all, tbh, i use lowell because he is my favorite character in fe7 and i really like lowellxrebecca pairing, so much that it actually become my favorite in the franchise.

    Ok but legit, Lowen carried my run because everyone else had ABYSMAL resistance (meanwhile he had stupidly good res) and mages started getting ridiculous. If he had higher speed and more attack, he would've actually been a really good unit. Otherwise he just tanked some shots and did a bit of damage before someone else finished the job

    Not only do you make a 4:30 video about Lowen, you also hate Kent?
    You, sir, have perfect taste!
    (Sain would probably be your second Paladin if you went through Lyn Mode first, and probably a better one. I don't use Lowen because he's good though, but because he's based and foodpilled)

    I never understood why Kent gets all the hate everywhere. From all my HHM runs, the ones with Kent are always the most successful. that extra speed is just too valuable. (ofc only if you do lyn mode)

    I view Lowen as a kind of 'patchwork' unit; not the best, or in some cases, not very good at their jobs, but they have a highly valuable toolset, so I'll deploy them regardless.

    Great video. Definitely agree that Lowen is a very “FE7” character. An unflashy and dull character/unit for an unflashy and dull video game.

    Besides the music at 6:36 being a tad too distracting (having lyrics didn't help), I loved the editing / presentation style you've used in this video.
    Having visual examples for every point, the gameplay sound just barely audible to help punctuate it, wide music variety (using Triangle Strategy was especially fitting for an FE video). The surrounding mess of Lowen sprites and portraits helped sell the uniquely awkward feel of this unit.
    And of course, we can't forget the brilliant laughs from 'dramatically' 'unmasking' his 'real' identity! Great work!

    I don’t think I’ve ever actually used Lowen simply because I prefer slower, tougher units like Oswin since I’m not really worried about a low turn count. If I bring a Paladin its usually Kent after training him up in Lyn mode because my Sain never seems to gain speed or resistance which makes him fall off really hard in the last few chapters

  • @avaliantsoul5408

    I always liked Lowen because he has my favorite stat. Defense. I am... mediocre at best at FE. I like my armor knights, and tanky units. Lowen fills that niche.
    Kent is by far the worst of the cavs, he's got hit rate, and that's it. Sain is alright, and my go-to IF I am playing through Lyn's mode, he hits like truck, if he hits. Lowen just usually hits, but not hard. but the fact he can survive multiple hits really helps given his move, which leaves him in more vulnerable positions (when I'm playing).
    also, I NEVER use that first knights crest on anyone but Oswin. Oswin is the GOAT, and I only beat the game the first time (I was like 8, I have improved since then) because of Oswin. To be fair, he was stat blessed. Dude had capped hp, strength, spd, def, and was like 2 points away from capping res.

    Very simple: Good unit, bad “unit feel.”
    He’s boring, but always worth training in HHM. I pretty much always get him 2 levels on his join map (Because why would I give up that exp to the axe bros, Rebecca or Elitrash?) and pray for strength and speed

    The first time I used Lowen was my most recent playthrough and all I remember is that he just sat there with middling stats and ate all damge with a gigantic HP bar.
    I mean he was *useful* but just like a slice of bread with only a dab of mayo on it, he was unspectacularly unexciting the entire time.

      I dunno mines a monster. he got high enough speed to double. his defense s about on par with a general and his res is at 14 for some reason. his strength is high to at 15. I got blessed I guess?

  • @giraffedragon6110
    @giraffedragon6110 2 месяца назад

    I don’t understand why people think Lowen is bad. He makes good immediate use of both the draco shield and the energy ring in his join chapter where no one doubles except for Marcus. Eliwood doesn’t take hits very well, Rebecca’s chip isn’t very substantial and the axe units… Dorcas can hit hard but not double and Bartre is a worse Dorcas who’s “supposed to get speed growths at 40%”
    In terms of doubling, eliwood just needs a point or two to start double and that goes for Lowen as well.
    Lowen however, can take hits like a fighter, do chip better than an archer, and just needs a few speed levels to consistently double most targets.
    Lowen allowed Marcus to be in 2 places at once.

    Even without Lyn mode I'd still always use Sain over Lowen. Dudes combat is mid of the highest caliber and his personality is even worse. Sain is the man

      I never understood why people slept on Lyn mode honestly. Normal mode maybe but you're genuinely missing out on heaps upon heaps of experience by skipping LHM, especially because the playthrough takes like an hour or two. I always end up with a Level 12 Sain with 15-ish strength promoted into a Paladin with nearly 20 strength and with Kent and Florina not being far off. Even if both Cavs are stat-screwed, they still have an insane early promotion.

  • @hunteraurzo

    Lowen as a unit is pretty interesting. He’s amazing yet underwhelming in multiple areas. I’d personally say he’s probably the most “balanced” cavalier in the game, where’s he’s not overpowered with enough strength and speed to one round, but not weak as paper. There’s also the fact that he has advantages like having a fire support and early game force deployment that add to his usefulness.
    I think one of the biggest issues of Lowen is his character for his personality and as a unit. Kent & Sain have a bigger role in Lyn mode, and are the games Cain and Abel archetype for FE7 (sorta). Players have a bigger attachment towards the two as a result, not to mention that Lyn mode gives them experience that the player may not want to “waste”. Kent & Sain are also one of your best options in Lyn mode, like commonly doubling Lyn mode enemies, or being reliable to tank, so they look better then Lowen by comparison. Lowen, meanwhile isn’t story important, and his biggest benefits such as his defense or his movement will have people compare him to characters like Oswin and Marcus, where he isn’t the best option. Kent & Sain just have more chances to look better than Lowen, when Lowen is just as good.
    Also for Kent, yeah Kent is pretty underwhelming, even though I like the dude. People say he’s the speedy one, but I always found Sain better in that role. Personally, I find him the Skilled one, which means his best benefit is Axes, but you need to promote him in order to get the best benefits of his stats. The Devil Axe certainly helps him, but I still find him underwhelming even with Lyn mode. That said, Kent supports Lyn, Sain, Fiora, Farina, Wallace and Heath, so 5/6 of his support options are actually worthwhile to get if you’re using him, since Anima makes a pretty good support bonus partner.
