2019 Chevrolet Colorado - The no-nonsense midsize truck

  • Chevrolet’s Colorado competes in the revived midsize truck segment, which includes a number of more recently updated pickups. Its available turbo-diesel engine’s best-in-class towing capacity and the ZR2’s off-roading chops are strengths, but the Colorado generally costs as much as or more than competitors other than the new Jeep Gladiator.
Shop for the new 2019 Chevrolet Colorado on CarGurus: cargur.us/vyXFM
The 2019 Colorado offers two cab styles, two box lengths, three engines, and five trim levels, as well as rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, providing options to meet a wide variety of needs with prices ranging from $21,300 to $42,900, not including the $1,095 destination fee. Its base inline 4-cylinder offers 250 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, a more popular 3.6-liter V6 puts out 308 hp and 275 lb-ft, and its 2.8-liter turbo-diesel makes 181 hp and 369 lb-ft.
The Colorado keeps things simple, featuring straightforward looks and an interior focused on practicality rather than style. It doesn’t offer the sort of luxurious materials and features that have become popular in higher-end full-size trucks, and while it includes Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 touchscreen system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, it’s not very high tech. I got my 18' Z71 (loaded) for $32.5. That is without any advertised discounts!
I now have 34k miles on the truck and LOVE IT! It has been great for commute, towing, family trips with 02 kids in the back, and off-roading (Mostly deep fluff sand on the beach).

Love mine. Had always been a Jeep/Ford guy but will never go back. I love my 6.7 F-450 and when I want to tow, it's a beast. But this is a nice weekend truck, daily and camping truck. Nice change of pace.

I’m on my second Colorado, not due to anything but the first was an Ext Cab, that was a Z71,4x4, V6, the wife used to commute to work and we used together on all trips with a 4,000 lbs Travel Trailer, along with enough stuff to scale in on a Cat Scale at just over 9,500 lbs CGVW. WE Put 48,000 miles trouble free exploratory and fun since new. All while getting 17 city, 26 hyw at the speed limits and averaged 13 on a 4,000 mile camping trip. But now that we are both retired and moved to a new home in Central Florida from Massachusetts, we only need one vehicle, so we bought a new 2019 Colorado Crew Cab W/T 4x4, V6, with everything I need and nothing I don’t! Like W/T Convenience Package, W/T Appearance Package, Tow Package, in white with grey interior all for just over 31k out the door! Plus Trailer Brake Control, along with the three new skid plates the dealer installed for me from AEV that they made for the ZR2 Bison! Plus a bed liner with storage compartments! All for that great price! Sure I could have bought another Z71, but they are at least 35k! Before all the added stuff!! So instead of leather heated seats we have vinyl and cloth, plus no carpet! But I still have enough money left to add some nice front coil overs to level an add suspension travel! Plus with just the 16” Aluminum Wheels that comes with the Appearance Package nice 31” tires cost less! On top of all that the dealer threw in an 84 mo 100,000 Bumper to Bumper Warranty! When the time came to go looking at Crew Cab Trucks, we had decided to go mid sized, so we spent a month looking and test driving! The wife really wanted a Gladiator, until that is she drove it! Sure they are arguably better off road, but on road, especially towing? The steering is all over the place and you must be on it all the time. The Ranger is plenty powerful but rides hard and steering is numb, plus fit an finish is bad! Especially where the tailgate meets the bed floor! You can easily fit two fingers in the gap! The Tacoma is a good truck, but they feel like you’re sitting on the floor and ride hard with grabby brakes. Where as the Colorado rides, steers and especially stops very well!

I got my 2019 crew cab summit white LT 2wd V6 with the convenience and towing package for under 26K before tax/license. I installed nerf bars myself, got a Rhino spray on bed liner, and tinted my front windows to match the factory tint on the rear windows. So far this truck has been amazing!

I feel like he failed on researching the pricing. 42k is a lot for a midsize z71, but his test truck is as pricey as you can get for a z71. The Midnight Edition is pretty much top of the pricing. If you are looking at your average Z71 v6 with most of those same options (minus the Midnight Edition) you are looking at 35-38k. Much more in line with the Toyota. It's a good solid truck. Had mine for a couple years now (paid 32K with all the same options except Midnight), and have had no major issues. It does have a little lag on the accelerator, but when it kicks in on the highway it really does haul ass. Been the perfect balance of daily driver and 4 wheel drive explorer.

I have this exact truck in the 2017 model, the first year the 8 speed trans was introduced. After 20,000 miles the torque converter would shudder and shake the trans when cruising and developed extremely hard shifts both up and down. I took it in and all the dealer's done so far is flush the trans and put a heavier weight fluid. Apparently this is a common issue with this 8 speed

As a owner of 2018 colorado lt with v6 I am very pleased only only a couple if issues. Main issue is that gear shifter location sucks. The crash system is a bit touchy in traffic. But otherwise I enjoying it at almost 20k I am averaging 20 combined with my foot not getting heavy. It drops to 16 if I spend a week heavy dragging stop light to stop light. My extended cab 2wd lt trim has 8 inch upgrade screen and recommend it. Out of 10 I would give it 8.5 stars

Have had my ColoradoZ71 with the duramax for just over 3 months now.Love It. It rides firm and well controlled. The engine is very smooth and strong on hills it just keeps going and hardly needs to shift with all that torque. Just came back from a 1300 mile trip from Pa to Illinois and back and averaged 30.8mpg travelling around 74mph. The a.c. had no problem keeping us comfortable even with the high 80s to low 90s temps. Around home I seldom get less than 26mpg.

I have always been a Toyota guy but ended up selling my Tacoma double cab 4x4 which I had bought brand new in 2004 just so I could update our vehicles. I later bought a new 2018 Chevy 2500hd 4x4 and bought the wife a new 2017 Toyota 4Runner 4x4. Bought both in 2017. Ended up trading in the 2500 for a 2019 Chevy Colorado Red Line 4x4. The wife ended up driving the Colorado for a bit to try it out. The wife now prefers to drive my Colorado on a daily basis and I am stuck with the 4runner LOL. Happy wife happy life I guess.

If you aren’t familiar with the issue or aren’t sure what to watch for, the best description I can give is that it feels similar to having a manual transmission in too high a gear. A shuddering/chugging that seems to radiate from the center of the vehicle outward under acceleration.

They did not fix the problem for 2019. Last loaner I was given while my Colorado was in the shop yet again, was a 2019 Silverado with just over 2k miles on it. Transmission was actually having worse symptoms in the Silverado than the Colorado I had just dropped off.
Update: Colorado is going in again this month. I now have independent mechanics who are confirming that despite what GM is telling me, the transmission does indeed need to be replaced and they are willing to back what they say. GM is just trying to pass the repair bills on to their customers by band-aiding the issues until the warranty runs out.

You call that simple and no nonsense? I’m still rockin a 06’ Dakota with 89,000 miles and a simple 4.7 V8 magnum. Mid-level trim only got you a 5spd. auto. trans, color matching bumpers, fog lights, cloth interior, manual sliding rear window, and power front windows with CD player. This price and features of midsize truck today are that of a luxury vehicle.
