    I haven't read it, but I was so surprised. Especially since you and Mike (from Mike's Book review) generally agree on these types of books and he was so hyped. Ah well, a shame you did not like it. Hope I'll do better as I've recently bought it. Thanks for the honest review!

    I disagree on the likeability of the MC, but I understand you point. He isn't very unique. He isn't funny. He is a bad guy. But I love the unwavering mob boss! He isn't very interesting, but he is consistent. I think it fits the tone very well!

    You should check out the audio for Lost man’s lane by Scott Carson. It’s a great audiobook. It’s narrated by Corey Brill he does a phenomenal job. The book Is fantastic on its own, but his narration makes it 100 Times better. His performance has mesmerizing and captivating. I literally don’t wanna stop listening once I start.

    Completely agree with everything you said. For me the author did rip off Peaky Blinders and then make it fantasy. It really annoyed me he used the same first name.
    I found it to be fun, entertaining but not memorable.
    I will say the later books are better than Peaky Blinders (I found the show lost its way with where to go but these books do the later story better)

    Sorry you didn't enjoy this one. In my opinion, this book was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I just bought the next one, Priest of Lies, and will read that as my next read. I read the physical book so perhaps that is the difference. I loved Tomas Piety and Bloody Anne as comrades as well as I need to find out more about the mysterious Billy the Boy.

    This was also not my kind of book. And by all accounts I should've liked it. I feel like the perspective and the writing missed the mark.
    I have two other series. Gentlemen Basterds, which I DNF'ed after book one because it was over written and I completely missed the heist it's supposed to be about (not to mention the fact that Locke keeps mentioning how much he saw as a kid but we NEVER get actual memories about the supposed things he saw before he was like 5 and joined the gangs). And The Green Bone Saga, which I loved for the most part. I had some issues with the pacing and characters Jade Legacy. I tend to like gritty grimdark a lot. Not this one.
    And because you mentioned it: The audiobook is definitely the reason I finished it. The audio was great, but only so much can be done with tthe source material if it isn't for you.
    Have you read The Raven's Mark trilogy by Ed MacDonald? I really enjoyed that. It has a bit of the "this is a debut" going on, especially with the first book. But that's fine because this was the author's debut and it was still good. Book one (Blackwing) mainly suffers from unnecessary swearing and rude language but it's not overly hard to look past since it's not offensive, just a bit unnecessary.
    The Mark Lawrence comment does make think that the book does remind a bit of how Book of the Ancester is told. That the only series of his I've read and gave all of them 4 stars. McLean might've been trying to emulate that style of writing a POV but just missed the mark a tiny little bit at most of the important points and so the effect isn't entirely as intended. This reminds me of when I was reading the horror book The Ritual by Adam Nevill where the writing style keeps missing the marks on atmosphere just a little bit every single time and it's very clear he's trying to pull a specific thing off, he just doesn't have the skill to do it. When I read reviews I discovered the writing style was emulated from someone else. This made so much sense and it's a shame because for me "The Ritual" had 0 atmosphere and I could see what the author was trying to do. Had it worked, the atmosphere would've been amazing. It's a bit similar with this book and POV character.
    Also yes to it just being bros doing bad stuff. The heisting was mainly just killing random people who seem to be physically in the way because they want to continue living their lives.

    • @ammalyrical5646
      @ammalyrical5646 2 месяца назад

      Gave this one 3 stars btw. And I think that's mainly because of its length. I gave Locke Lamora 2 because it's so long and overwritten and I had to give it three shots to finish it. This one I DNF'ed 0 times, but I was close a couple of times. I mainly continued because it wasn't that long and I had the audiobook. And yet I also think the audiobook negatively impacted my enjoyment. At least that's what if felt like when I wrote my review that I just looked up again. Now I would have to reread book one to even continue the series which I don't want to do so I guess this is a permanent DNF now.
      I'll go back to Lilith Saintcrow's mediocre, but entertaining urban demon hunter fantasy that released in 2006 now. At least that gives me what I expect and I'm entertained by it.
      It also has pretty good PTSD rep and the lead is bi, which I did not expect from a 2006 traditionally published book. I'm talking about the series Dante Valentine here btw and Dante is a woman (I thought it was a man before I started reading, but I like it this way too).
