the fact that this book was written first person from the POV of kinch and not the author buehlman will never stop being impressive. the descriptions, thoughts, phrases, everything. best first person book i think i've ever read without a doubt. the author absolutely became kinch in his writing and it was amazing to read.

As you did, I thought this would be a 5 star read for you. This has been on my TBR for over a year now and I'm still excited to jump into it. I've heard really good things about this author.

I actually just finished this recently myself, and felt much the same. I went in with very high expectations, which may have hurt the overall experience, but I definitely still enjoyed it. I loved Buehlman's prose and a lot of the worldbuilding but felt like it lost the plot a bit towards the end as well as not fleshing things out as much as I wanted. I'm still looking forward to any further books in the series, whenever they may come out, and I've added a few of Buehlman's other books to my ever-growing TBR.
Oh, and you nailed echelon... I heard it plenty of times in the military!

This is in my top 5 for this year! Absolutely loved it. It's currently edged out by "The Night Ship" but definitely a favorite for 2023.

If you enjoy horror his earlier work is fun. I know Between Two Fires gets mentioned a lot but i also thought his vampire book The lesser dead was fun.

I'm waiting for it on kindle from my library and looking forward to reading. I enjoyed Locke Lamora, so fingers crossed I'll enjoy this. Currently reading Sixteen ways.....

I disagree about the ending. I loved it, start to finish. I highly recommend the audiobook read by the author, himself. He also reads his book, Lesser Dead- both of these are read masterfully and greatly enhance the experience of the story.

Couldn't agree more with this review. I loved the first half but unfortunately didn't end up finishing because, basically I, got bored :(

I read this back in March, with more casual expectations and I thought it was alright. The characters and tone kind of felt a bit all over the place and it didn't seem like Buehlman had a direction for the story. There were some good moments though, and the worldbuilding was very well done.
    Good review man!

I completely agree with this review. I would like to recommend a great stand alone fantasy book, 2017 "Battle Mage" by Peter A. Flannery. I don't think I've seen any reviews for it, and it was really good!

Thought the book was a 3/5, it was an entertaining and fun read. The book isn’t pushing any huge bounds, but it’s a decent, typical fantasy story.

I bought this book several months ago. I attempted to read it and just got really annoyed. I do not like flashbacks, and I don't like action being interrupted. I hate when an author tells me how something is going to end and then going back and showing how that happened. Like on the island with the boat and the people after them. I still have the book, and I plan to try it again when I am in the mood for something like it. I may have to switch to audio though. Listening to you though makes me think maybe I stopped reading just a tad too soon, because I prefer a very linear story.

Please tell me you're going to read Between Two Fires next! Despite what people may say, it felt more like a fantasy book to me than a horror.

Book was decent imo. Wasnt too fond of the episodic chapters and the humor felt kinda forced to me. Also i usually like more "brutal" stories than this lol. But overall not a bad read.

I wanted to like this book so much. My one and only DNF. Story was good but I could not stand the writing style. Pretentious prose is what it felt like. The author was a big modern renaissance guy and it bleeds through the pages and not in a god way for me.

Yeah this book is almost entirely based on writing style. The plot is forgettable, so if you didn't love the writing you would hate this book I'm sure!

    Too vulgar and greasy humor.
    Drop it on 1/3
Maybe when I was 16 I would have liked this book
