One of my favourite fantasy book series in recent years. The later books confirm how easily Thomas can jump between gangsterism and politics. No surprise, maybe! The magic never really comes to the fore; it sort of remains a background threat mostly - but not always, it has its moments. I also had the advantage (?!) of never having watched the TV series, Peaky Blinders, so I never got to see an overlap in themes. I’d also recommend the Low Town trilogy by Daniel Polansky, which also features an ex soldier, now gangster, drug dealer, in a seedy district of a city. Magic-lite. Sounds similar but quite different characterisations and the main character is more of a loner than godfather.
Yeah I definitely think not watching Peaky Blinders helps! I have read the second one and I loved that one. It wasn’t super similar to the show, which was great. I’ve had Low Town on my bookshelves for a few years. I cannot wait to get to it. I wanted to read Polansky’s standalone’s first, and I think I’m going to start his duology before I get to Low Town. I know I’m going to love it though!
YES more love for War for the Rose Throne please!! I think you will be extremely pleased with the direction this series goes in, it truly only gets better and better. And ugh Bloody Anne is the best! Also, I really need to watch Peaky Blinders, shame on me for not having done so already oops 🤣🥲
Yeah you definitely should watch the show, esp as you’ve finished this series! It’s so good! I’ve read the second book (need to film my review) but spoiler alert, I loved it quite a bit more. It was so good. I’ll be picking up the third book this month. Bloody Anne for the win haha!
It sounded interesting, but I think I may give it a pass - I haven't seen Peaky Blinders, I know it won't affect, but I think it's not the right moment for a book like this. In any case, I really love your style for reviewing; you avoid spoilers but somehow manage to say everything I need to see whether I want to read it or not! Happy reading, Zara!
Thanks for sharing another amazing and fantastic book 📖 for me to read and I am looking forward to it prayers and blessings for you and your family love your Aussie family friend and supporte John ❤❤❤
Great review, Zara. I've only seen one episode of Peaky Blinders so maybe my lack of knowledge and experience with that show will lead to a less jarring experience. I did try to read it earlier this year but I was committed to too many series at the time.
i agree i didnt finish the third book but the second one was better, still if im not invested in the characters i dong care much about the plot so the hole series was not worth it for me@@bookswithzara
I have a hard time finding TV series that keep my interest, but Peaky Blinders held my attention for more episodes than most - it's very well done.
It really is! Everything is perfectly executed.

@@bookswithzaraYeah I think I saw your rating for that second book on GR, made me SO happy!! Can't wait for the review :)

Yeah I think that will help! I did finish book 2 recently, which I did like a lot more. Mainly because it veered away from the show.
As long as I can play the music from Peaky Blinders as I read it
That’s a requirement!
This series was pretty mid tbh i dnf and never finished it, characters felt very one dimensional, reads like a script for a tv show
I will say book two is a lot better. I read it in like 2 days.
