The series opens to Bob Dylan’s Every Grain of Sand. Now Dylan is a born-again Christian and this is one of his most spiritual songs. The lyrics talk about hitting his low point, the moment of confession-when he can see the Master’s hand in all of nature, in every grain of sand.
This has a lot of meanings for Moon Knight, and the villain Arthur Harrow. In the comics, Moon Knight was a mercenary named Marc Spector who died in the desert, and was resurrected by Konshu, the Egyptian god of the moon.
This was Marc's low point, his moment of confession, when he had a religious conversion to serve Konshu. Much like Saul, in the Bible, was struck blind by God and became the apostle Paul. The show seems like it’s going to be about faith in gods, and serving their will.
For instance, look at what Harrow does in this very first scene. He conducts a kind of ceremony for himself. He uses this glass of water to make a chime. This is similar to eastern meditation techniques, where chimes are used to harmonize the soul. In some parts of the world this sound can mean good luck or prosperity, or it can be a signal as a warning sign.
In christianity, water is also a symbol of purity, meant to cleanse. There’s holy water, and baptism. And the breaking of glass in a towel is reminiscent of a jewish wedding tradition that symbolizes the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. The couple is starting their journey together, but they must also reflect on what has been lost. Broken glass has evolved over time to become a symbol of renewal and hope.
This is reminiscent of fire walking, the ritual where one walks across hot coals. This is a way to show your faith-it’s a rite of passage to show devotion. By walking on shattered glass, Harrow is demonstrating to his god Ammit that he will endure any trial for her benefit.
And don’t worry we’re going to explain all the Egyptian gods and their symbolism later in the video. Now in the comics, Harrow isn’t a religious leader, he’s a former scientist who studied pain therapy.
And we meet Stephen Grant, set to the song A Man Without Love, by Humperdinck. The song’s meaning is more obvious-Stephen’s condition keeps him from being with anyone, so he is lonely-a man without love. Stephen suffers from dissociative identity disorder, or DID-what’s commonly called multiple personality disorder.
In the comics, Moon Knight is a former mercenary named Marc Spector who pledged to serve Konshu-the Egyptian god of the moon. To do this, he created new identities-a playboy named Stephen Grant, a cab driver named Jake Lockely, and the hero Moon Knight-and later, another masked hero, Mr. Knight. Now these identities also reflect the many phases of the moon-just as, in Egyptian lore, Konshu has four different aspects: traveller," "Embracer," "Pathfinder," and "Defender."
Now, in the comics, Marc trying to maintain these various identities eventually led him to develop DID-or, he had it all along, or it was caused by Konshu-the details are left murky on purpose.
But Stephen has no idea that he has DID. He wakes up in strange places, and probably assumes that he’s been kidnapped. So he uses tape to create a seal on the door, sand to catch any footprints, and a combination lock to keep him in his bed.
In the comics, Stephen is a fake identity used to finance Moon Knight’s activities. Here, it seems like the Stephen identity is used for cover. He calls his mother’s voicemail twice, and gets postcards from her. I think that these cards are actually from Marc, as a way to make Stephen think he has lived a normal life.

I'd say more Flagellation than fire walking
The Arabic song in the date scene about a woman dreams of boat with her loved one
Surely if all you can own land in Scotland and be called a lord then everyone who owns a house is Scotland would be a lord or lady? I have been to Glasgow and can’t say it’s the House of Lords. So just a novelty right
The biggest villain in this episode was the waiter who first ripped Steven off by telling him the most expensive steak was a centre cut fillet rather than the end cut filet mignon. Then he followed this up by recommending Steven have his steak cooked 'well done'...which is truly an evil thing to do.
"Stirred or shaken"
"Do I look like I care?"
When he said "Ok well done" I instantly thinked: Dude he just got dumped, why do you hate him so much?!

His British accent is awful lol
@@brandonking2679 Because Marc is an American so Steven having a bad accent makes sense and on top of that Oscar is doing multiple personalities with different accents, facial expressions, mannerisms, hairstyle, etc, stop complaining for something so little and enjoy the amazing acting he is doing.
Let's face it mate. Oscar is great in everything he's in. Seems like a good person in real life also.
14:47 that not the first time he hears the name Marc. Konshu tells him to surrender the body to Marc earlier. The call just makes him freaked out because he realizes that he wasn’t dreaming all that stuff earlier in the episode.

I actually teared up a bit as it hit him that he lost his chance with her. He is clearly miserable and had a shot at happiness that was stolen from him.
I mean tbh ,that shot was never his . he hardly even knows himself .
HE didn't. Marc or whoever the hell set that up hahahah
Steven didn't have a chance with the museum tramp as Mark probably originally engaged her. Dab your tears with papyrus.
@@orrytownes2766 I don't know if tramp is the right word. She seemed like a nice lady. Also, it doesn't really matter if he had a chance or not. HE thought he did.
@@Blasted2Oblivion course it matters. “Stephen was surprised by the very prospect because he would not have had the nerve to ask her, she would have rode over him with a chariot. His women comes later in the series.
When he wakes up in Germany, I don’t think he’s been knocked out but rather that he jumped from the window of the building (hence the broken jaw) which explains why the guards chased him. Marc probably went in the building, stole the golden insect, escaped by jumping through the window, passed-out from the fall (causing Steven to front).

The oddly specific reference to the Armenian Genocide was a nod to Oscar Isaac’s role in the film The Promise (about the Armenian Genocide). I highly recommend the film - it is a beautiful historical piece that will make you cry.
Oh I cried my eyes out and I don’t cry often
I remember reading a book in high school about the Armenian genocide and a boy who survived it and it was crushing to read. And all the System of a Down lyrics
@@ajzorger93 My grand mother survived from Armenians and Allied armies attack during the WW1... 1.3 million Turks died because of Armenians in Anatolia Turkey. Shame on you ryan
Dammit, Janet!!!
It's amazing what Issac can do with a great character and a decent script
Star Wars feels attacked lol. I felt so bad for Oscar seeing him so defeated and completely over the ROS in interviews.
How about when he played Ivan Ooze in X-Men Apocalypse?
That was even worse.
@@the503creepout7 eh. I and some others still enjoyed it
I really like the lack of MCU connections (FOR NOW) it allows us to focus on one character or more accurately 3 or 4 depending on whether jake Lockley shows up.
Bingo
I find it interesting that harrow didn’t even mention the blip though… what if that’s the “future of humanity” he’s talking about?🤔
I agree. MCU fans are mad, but the General Public is happy. This is completely anecdotal but a handful of my coworkers do not enjoy the MCU, they find it either too silly or too convoluted (which I will concede on the latter, e.g. if they jumped into Infinity War without watching at least like five movies it would be an awfully confusing movie).
However: they're willing to watch Moon Knight because not only is it standalone, but it's far darker and much more "grown up" than the rest of the MCU content.
@@rileyhughes5613 Was finding magical stones that original or difficult to follow tho?
@@versewonderstrikes5353 To reduce the plot to that would directly recycle back to their first complaint: that's an incredibly childish and silly premise when it's distilled to it's essence. "Magic stones go brr" for three hours is not an entertaining plot to most people lmao.
So yes you're correct, but that only further validates their distaste.
You've gotten the recent continuity a wee bit backwards around 10:47.
Khonshu didn't enter Marcs mind in order to weaken him and thus gave him multiple personalities. Marc already had DID from childhood, which is what allowed/encouraged Khonnshu to enter his mind when he was killed in Egypt. Kohnshu counted on Marc's mind being fractured and weak to make it easier to control him. It worked for a long time until Marc's Alters made peace with each other, forcing Big K to take a backseat.
We all knew Oscar Issac was going to kill it. Loved the cinematography. I can’t wait for more!
Nah I'm still really upset they cast him. I really wanted Shia Labeouf to play Moon Knight
The first time Steven hears his alter's name was not on the phone with Layla but when he woke up in Germany and Khonshu said to "give the body back to Mark".
The show’s depiction of D.I.D although a bit exaggerated, is incredibly accurate and very relatable so far. This comes from someone who has the disorder. Cant wait to see more!
What super power does your other personality have?
D.I.D doesn't turn you into an Egyptian God avatar?
Just wanted to ask, how does it all work irl? And also if you have been sent by any Egyptian god
@@icy_fire4080 I dont think Konshu has to do anything his discease
Konshu only want Mark Specter
so he just deal with DID situation of Mark
@@uvindukulathunga3860 They added DID to sound fancy nothing more . Just look at Hulk he got his superpower from gamma radiation but in real life it will give u terrible death.
It all just to sound interesting nothing to do with common sense.
Two things:
1) the scarab in ancient myths represented immortality/resurrection
2) Horus (Hru) was also known as an avenger since he "avenged" his father's, Osirius, death by Set (Horus' uncle). So since Khonshu is associated with Horus and going by that AKA, Moon Knight fits as a warrior for Khonshu. Fun fact: Hru was also ALSO known as the god of war (shout out to Kratos)
Bonus: Khonshu is also the god of time (sometimes called Chron, which we associate with Chronos, the greek god of time and one of the greatest game of all time Chrono Trigger) so that also goes with the passages of time Steven experiences
Like Steven, I'm a fan of Ancient Egyptian Mythology haha
Ra!!! Ra!!! Ra!!! The sun/son god???
There is a QR code on the wall when he is talking to the girl who put gum in the pyramid. It links to a digital version of Werewolf by Night 32.
Editor: "We need to give him a side kick, maybe someone he met in Europe?"
Comic Book writers in the 70s: "What about a French guy, we'll call him Frenchie...Frenchie DuChamp. That name sounds normal, right?"
...Moon Squire?
His name is Jean-Paul Duchamp. Frenchie is a nickname.
@@camkret4113 yes, clearly. But it’s it’s equivalent to calling him “Jack ‘USA’ Smith” if he was American. It smacks of supreme laziness.

Theory on Steven's mother: Ammit is referred to as a female deity, depicted with a crocodile head. At the end of each of his voicemails to his mother, Steven ends with "laters gators." He may have both gods raging within him with Ammit holding sway over Steven while Marc is aligned with Khonshu.
Ah, that sounds really interesting!
Such a great episode! Felt nothing like the MCU, & I think that's fantastic!
U don't like the MCU?
I didn't get that feeling
I knew I'm gonna love this
@@Zack-hb4eh I don’t think Denzy Canty meant that in a negative way. Understandably there has been criticism on how plenty of the MCU movies feeling similar to one another. There has been a couple here in the first episode of Moon Knight, but those gets outweigh by the tension the first episode brought, it’s very refreshing.
Give it time. Wandavision didn't feel like MCU at all until they went with the whole cgi magic blasty fight scene at the end.
Oscar Isaac continues to prove that he is a national treasure!! His acting is always phenomenal. Love this show already especially the part when the Mark Spector persona takes over Steven and becomes Moon Knight. So fucking badass🔥🔥
Well Khonshu's voice in Steven's mind reminded me of Venom talking to Eddie. Also somehow there's a tiny similarity how both have their superhero transformation, like Venom overtaking Eddie and Moonlight taking over Steven also both mention word PARASITE. Lol 😎
the goodbye to his mom being later GATOR is just another sweet croc reference.
I have a feeling it was actually Jake lockley that got the date with his co worker, just because Marc doesn’t seem like the type to waste his time for a date
Also I think Marc is married
also maybe jake is the a playboy since in the comics it was steven but maybe its jake here. why am i thinking like this
This kind of tracks, especially because it was Jake in the comics that fathered a child with Marc’s girlfriend and hid it from him for years.
@@jacmenz4113 thats what i was thinking. steven is the playboy and jake is the taxi man (or the street level chameleon- street level museum vendor in this case). so not that it matters but they couldve swapped those roles for whatever reason. This show was way more brutal than I anticipated, ok Marvel let's go!!
His suit is freaking sick one of the best in the MCU so far.
I never watched this channel until The Eternals movie, been hooked ever since.
You missed one, though it was very subtle. When he is in the museum with the lights out he walks by a statue or bust with half of a face missing. Steven then turns around and briefly his face lines up with the missing piece of the statue's head.
Interesting reaction to the broom salesperson in front of his apartment. In some cultures people will place an upside down broom near the door to repel unwanted guests or spirits
This was incredible. First of all, because I have zero knowledge about the character in the comics, I had zero expectations. That really kept my mind open.
The acting was amazing!!
And the way they portrayed Steven's blackouts was phenomenal.
You didn't highlight how all the reflections in the bathroom infinity sequence retreat, leaving only the three aspects and Steven. All three say something to Steven but the main conversation with the one on his left, which I assume is Mark. What is interesting is that the one on the right was not holding his arm like Steven, the reflection behind Steven and Mark were. This may suggest that there is another, more separate, identity yet to come to the fore (or it could just be editing but there are three faces of Oscar Isaac in the end credits - Steven, Mark and ?). All the reflections return when Steven cedes control to Mark, suggesting unity.
Another note; assuming that the bathroom scene is the day subsequent to his missed date on Sunday, Moon Knight makes his appearance on Monday which has it's etymological origin of diēs Lūnae (Latin) meaning "Day of the Moon".
As a side note, what kind of Museum has a back-room bathroom with 12 basins, tiled walls, polished metal paper-towel dispensers and gold-neon lit mirrors on three walls? The only entrance was through a service corridor so the museum must have a lot of staff and really, really like them...
The Scarab is likely a key to the "tomb" of Ammit (it's wings are popped out in the bloody aftermath scene in the village and in the end credits).
What was the city in the reflection of London in the end Credits?
I wonder if the imagery of the Moon in the end credits will change from a Waxing Crescent Moon to a Full Moon by the final episode?
OH MY GOD!!! FINALLYYY! This is literally the only time I have come across someone who also noticed that in the bathroom scene there were indeed 3 reflections. I searched everywhere to see if someone had talked about how we saw Jake in ep1 itself but I have found nothing so far lol
I suffer from BPD the slightly more aggressive version of DID, this show is so close to my heart now (def heavier than a feather lol) I loooooooved it.
BPD is Bi-Polar Disorder, RIGHT???
@@stephenfocosi7075 borderline personality disorder, but, they may use the same initials for both so I should have specified. That's on me.

This is the best episode of Marvel TV since Daredevil season 1
I'm so glad he didn't say Thanos after all those other evils
I like how the show doesn't feel like it belongs in the MCU, so it doesn't fall into that generic superhero feel that almost all MCU properties have now. I hope they start doing stand-alone feeling projects that still interact with the MCU but do their own thing. Think like having movies exactly like the old Blade movies but it does take place in the MCU.

I loved this 1st episode and this show so far and really enjoy F. Murray Abraham as Khonshu. Ethan Hawke as Authur Harrow feels terrifying which I enjoy with the tone of the series. Plus Oscar Isaac is casted perfectly casted as Moon Knight
1:30 Also in ancient Greece the people that were very successful put sharp objects (pieces of glass or sharp stones) in their shoes to avoid the wrath of the gods, because if you were really happy and successful the gods would be jealous and punish you for that...
When I saw the broken glass in the shoes scene, I immediately thought of Penance. Both the character and the action.
I relate to the character of Moonknight far too well, to the point it’s hard to read his comics. Kind of like how my brother doesn’t like watching movies or shows that deal with war or mass killings (like the show Punisher)… after he got out of the U.S. military (he’s now a citizen of Australia).
I thought of I think it's called self flagellation like Paul Bettany in Da Vinci Code. Obviously to a lesser degree, but the idea is the same.
I was thinking about that too. Like maybe he has to constantly pay for the sins he's committed or is yet to commit in order to serve Ammit without dying.
The glass thing is NOT a reference to Jewish faith. Harrow is an expert in the field of pain. It's about pain. The guy in this video doesn't know what he is talking about
@@bgrosland1986 I agree, it has Nothing to do with the Jewish faith. This show is a perfect example of what you can do with a good story and a name only. No crossovers, no known connection to any known Marvel property and it was still riveting. Bravo, Marvel.
Not an Easter Egg but a mistake rather; In the car chase scene you can see a little badge or marker on the bottom right side of the windshield of the truck and maybe the BMW, too. These cars have German plates in the episode. Yet, German cars do not have that sign, Hungarian cars do. So, you can tell that that scene was filmed in Hungary.

Ryan just FYI no tombs have been found in the pyramids, the Pharoahs were actually buried in the valley of the kings.
There are tombs in the pyramids. The Great Pyramid of Giza has at least two, the Queens Chamber and the Kings Chamber. The Kings Chamber has the remnants of a sarcophagus. They were both robbed long ago. Different Pharaoh's and Egyptian rulers are buried in the Valley of the Kings. There is a huge breadth of history that encompasses Egypt and the pyramids are just a small part.

Great point outs and explanations by the way. A lot of things other analysts didn’t point out/explain. Great work 👍🏼
It was a great episode and I can't wait for the next one, that's something I haven't said about the MCU shows we've had so far
17:22 I like to believe that the scale don't work because Ammit's scale only work for humans, but since Khonsu is in Steven's mind and is Steven at the some point, so it doesn't work on gods.
They're harder to notice than the Taweret ones, but there are also plush toys of Ammit in the gift shop, same scene. I'm loving all the Egyptian details! Can't wait for the next episode!
8:40 - Scarabs represent many things in Egyptian mythology. An important one is Khepri, the morning aspect of Ra, the sun god. He was a scarab (a dung beetle), and every morning he rolled the sun across the sky. He represented renewal and new beginnings.
17:45 - It’s a stuffed crocodile, and Sobek is a crocodile god. You keep mentioning alligators, but there are no alligators in Egypt. Only crocodiles.
17:55 - Khonshu is not an aspect of Horus. Khonshu gifted Horus an eye made of moonlight after Set tore one of his out.
Khonshu is also the god of time, which makes it ironic for Steven to keep losing time when Marc takes over. Especially since there is the myth of Nut gambling Khonshu for more time to have her children.
WHY DOES A CROCIDILE ALWAYS HAVE A SMILE??? EVERYTHING IS IN JEST/INGEST WITH IT!!!
What MCU character would you like to see Moon Knight team up with?
Black Knight
Ghost rider
Deadpool
Blade
Thor
The first episode was too good to just be "some streaming show" It's cinematic in all its glory. What an origins story!
This was awesome, I can’t wait for the rest of the episodes!
What did you think of the episode?
It was excellent
Hot fire!
I loved the "in medias res" feeling of this episode. It's so different for a superhero story.
In the Alps while he is running he goes through a a field of poppies. And poppies are simbol of dreams, sleep, or death (eternal sleep).
Good eyes, I didn't notice that. Thanks be to Dorothy of Oz to remind us of that fact!!!
I loved every minute tbh can't wait to see more
What amazing attention to detail. I love it!
I had a weird thought when I saw the bullet hole in the glass. It made me think of the shattered glass effect for the multiverse, and I thought to myself what if the different personalities were all multiverse versions of the same person. So in one universe that guy was Marc Spector, but in another he was Steven Grant, and so on, but now they're all trying to exist in the same person in the same universe.
Or it's just a hole from where a bullet was shot through some glass
I would be astonished if it were meant to be anything more than a bullet shot through some glass. I would consider it a stretch to assume it meant anything else.
I think it is interesting that this is one of the first times to have the hero have split personalities, since the most famous ones (like Gollum, and the Green Goblin) were villains.
Yeah unless you count hulk but yeah
Or David Haller from Marvel's Legion
@@nicktrujillo8516 true I forgot about professors son
@@valysheev But we never really saw Hulk and Banner talk besides a few scenes in Infinity War. They are mainly treated as two different characters.
@@Lord-Emperor-Vader oh I didn't know you just meant mcu?
That scene was so freaking sad, he played that so well, I honestly don’t think I can rewatch bc of it, like, I don’t wanna cry too
Such an awesome first episode cannot wait to see more
When he's running from the Jackal, he lines up with the bust of one of the statues for a brief moment. Who's the bust of?
That’s a great question
I noticed that too but thought it was more of a nod to Mark's/Steven's split (or "cracked") personalities
7:42, not a statue that's an actual person why would you leave a tip for a statue
8:32, he didn't get knocked out he jumped out the window those guys were shooting out of. The impact woke up Steven
Doug's "Wake me up, before you go go" Humming was the best part of this video ❤
This was rollercoaster of an episode and I loved it
he describe mummification to a kid and gets it wrong the organs were removed through an incision in the side the brain was removed through the nose but the Egyptians believed it was an unimportant organ the other organs were preserved the brain wasn't.
Sorry close but no cigar the pharaoh that Moon Knight tangles with in the comic is Rama-Tut who is a Kang which I suppose connects it with the Loki series plus in the comics Khonshu is the god of time.
The phone is not the first time he's heard the name Mark, when he wakes up in Germany Khonshu say to surrender the body to Mark.
The crocodile didn't move it was the werejackal moving behind the crocodile.
You missed another multi personality symbol he walks behind a statue with half a head there is one shot where you can only see half his face the rest is obscured by the statues half head giving him in effect two faces.
In the comics Moon Knight chases Kang across time and space to recover 4 artefacts that make up Khonshu's staff
i'm not really a fan of moon knight in the comics as i find that the character is lacking consistency, a interesting rogues gallery and proper identity to build new versions around, feel like it is the type of problem that leads to people falling in love with one depiction of the character only for the next edition to change to much from the last version that you end up losing interest or just get over all disappointed sooner or later as you no longer recognize the character anymore, but i will still give the show a chans, think it might be what the character needs to finally get a foundation to build him up better in the future, and from what i seen in this first episode i think it might be giving moon knight just what he needs as a character.
Hes the sort of character that has one strong gimmick. Is konshu real or a delusion? Once that question is answered there isnt much more to the character. But he looks cool and people like him so he gets put in stories with other characters until he gets shelved for a while only for the character to get a reboot title that may or may not answer the question of konshu differently than it was answered previously. Rinse. Repeat. 40 years later make a show with the same formula.
This sounds like much more of a complaint than i mean it to be. Im a fan of the character. Its just no one really seems to know where to take the character after tackling the konshu question.
Great vid. Enjoyed the 1st ep of Moon Knight
I like that you talk at a quick pace. I never have to up the playback speed.
Ryan, your eyes look like you've been crying. Are you ok, buddy?
he always looks high. doug probably was holding him at gunpoint or smth.
The fact that Oscar Isaac also plays Apocolypse is crazy! 10:25
Thank you, Warren Ellis, for your contribution!
This was the best & most through breakdown thus far
l LOVED IT FROM START TO FINISH...GREAT SHOW
Was it just me who thought it was weird that Steven's boss, Donna, wished it wasn't Steven? As if she knew about the multiple personality disorder.
As a English man from London his ascent just grates on me. Is it Essex, East end, Norfolk, West Country, south London?! Make up your mind! Swip swopping all the time.
Fun Fact: The artwork at 10:06 is from a MTG(Magic the gathering cardgame) playingcard, which is based or lean onto egyptian mythology called amonkhet.
