An error from Ryan here in the idea that Gimli expected Moria to still be a going concern. Gimli expected that Balin had taken Moria, after the events of the Hobbit, thousands of years later. The fall of Moria, and the existence of *something*, not necessarily a Balrog, known as Durin's bane, was well established.

    • @cmsg77
      @cmsg77 14 дней назад +4

Plausibly, Ryan meant that if the Balrog were 'known' at this time, then Gimli would not imagine Balin's colony would be a success, but if Gimli knew, Balin would know, and would not have ventured the matter. Ultimately, the comment doesn't make sense in this interpretation.
Fundamentally the premise in LOTR is that *something* happened, and that 'something' is lost to history. Given the extreme depth of time, this is consistent with ... well, nearly anything that is not observed by 'immortal' (or as Tolkien would have it, co-longeval with the life of Arda) characters.

Well in the books Gimli didn't really expect Balin to have succeeded. He knew Balin hadn't been heard from in many years and was not surprised by the state of Moria the way he is in the movies.

@@jakedixon448 was trying to be (and this is no criticism) slightly gentler than that. I do very much enjoy Ryan's videos, by and large, but I would caution him on commentary of this sort, which requires a very detailed knowledge. I would not say that the video suggests not having read the books (LOTR, at any rate). There's a lot in there and I could believe that someone who has read LOTR and Silmarillion more than once could get this wrong. I am something of a completionist, and expect only a handful of commentators satisfy my Niggling mind.

Is it not correct that 16 were made for the elves before the three that Celebrimbor made with the knowledge to do so alone?
Still, Sauron in one way and/or form, definitely had a "hand" in making them without a doubt, just might not have literally forged those three.

    • @director5193
      @director5193 12 дней назад +5

Actually helped, he taught Celebrimbor and gave some technology. The exact creation of the rings is not described. But the elven rings were linked to the One Ring, the elves did not wear them until the One Ring was lost. And in LotR the rings on the hands of Galadriel/Elrond/Gandalf were seen only by Frodo, as he was the bearer of the One Ring, for the other creatures the Elven rings remained invisible.
In the TV show they also made the Elven rings themselves, Sauron had fled by then.

I’d love some of you to have been alive in the 80’s when Fantasy and Sci-fi had the budget of a thimble. And when I could only dream of them actually adapting my favourite book beyond a cartoon that only covered half of it. So not only have I had three amazing films, another three good films (The Hobbit should have been two films) and a series based on the appendices and other writings that I read and thought “I’d love to see this adapted one day” and now that’s what we are getting, and whilst Tolkien himself didn’t go into detail but sketched out with dates and events. Only when we get to Numenor do we get anything of any weight. So as kong as they hit the right event "beats" they can fill in the rest to make it an entertaining narrative. I enjoyed S1, it introduced characters, worlds, a mystery that kept people thinking, and culminated with a revelation, a huge setpiece and an important part of Tolkien's lore in the forging of the three Elven Rings.
S2 will build on that, and there are several events that should take place during this season and by this trailer probably will.

Thinking the stranger is one of the blue wizards. You pointed out Gandalf arrived much later than this & pointed out that the stranger is far in the east. The blue wizards arrived long before Gandalf & headed east, later returning west only to be sent east again by Saruman. The stranger is doing everything that the blue wizards are meant to do. Also, the staff “thing” isn’t exclusive to Gandalf, it’s reasonable to assume all 5 wizards would use the same actions for spells as we know they each had a staff from Saruman asking Gandalf if he demanded the 5 Staffs in Return of the King

The story in which the blue wizards arrived first seems to be the story being told, which is the story where the blue wizards head east then west, then sent east again by Saruman. You are talking about the story where all 5 arrived together, from Unfinished Tales again, that does not appear to be the story they’re using. Isildur and his father, Elendil, were present at the Last Alliance. As was Elrond and King Gil-Galad.
We get to see the formative years as father and son in Rings of Power, but we saw in the prologue of Fellowship of the Ring film their deaths and how the Ring corrupted Isildur in his grief after wounding Sauron.
We also see Elrond’s mentorship under High King Gil-Galad. Elrond, of course, is present through most of the fighting against Sauron’s forces in the Second Age as Gil-Galad’s Herald, and inherits Vilya from Gil-Galad when the King is slain at the Last Alliance.
I predict these two scenes of Isildur and Elrond obtaining their Rings of Power will be the final episode of the series, a compare and contrast exercise for the viewer, then finishing with Elrond coaxing Isildur to follow him to Oroduin, presumably to “cast it into the fire! Destroy it!” But Isildur won’t be able to, of course.

yeah, you have to admit though, this one is kind of on Tolkien for making the most well known part of his book (the dark lord on his dark throne poem) kind of imply that he did make them to trick the elves. You have to read quite a bit to know that that's not 100% how it went down.

Thanks for the positive attitude towards the show - I love LOTR books and the movie trilogy but I enjoyed the show as well... And I 'm willing to wait for more episodes to pass the final judgement. Which is often not the case with most of the fans... I thought that SW or ST fans were bad and not open to new ideas, but LOTR fans don't seem to be an exception.

At this point Mirkwood should still be called Greenwood the Great and shouldn't be dark and infested yet. And it is wayyyyyy to early for the Balrog to be showing up. And the reason the elvish rings were able to be used for good was because they were forged last without Sauron. They're tied with the rest through the skills used to create them, but he never touched them.

For those interested to know what the teaser showed.
    Siege of eregion
    Wizards in the east
Pharazon challenging manwe sulimo or his vassals(the great eagles)
    Sauron/celebrimbor dynamic
    Elrond leading gil galads army.
All of this happens and is written by Tolkien in the appendices,Unfinished Tales and Silmarillion. Don’t let some blind hater tell you if the show is good or not.

RoP1 is so laughably detached from Tolkien in terms of world, plot, themes, and characters - there’s no point in calling out specific lore issues.
Setting that aside, on its own merits: a very loose string of plot contrivances and generally shallow or one-note characters. A number of the actors did a fine job with what they had to work with, but good acting doesn’t fix a bad script/vision.
You want a good Tolkien adaptation? #1: 1981 BBC LOTR radio drama, Ian Holm as Frodo. #2 Bass-Rankin Return of the King. #3 Bakshi LOTR “part one”), #4 1977 Bass-Rankin Hobbit.

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the shot of the snowy tower is going to be a flashback to the creation of Durnost (where Galadriel was in the first episode of season 1), maybe the flashback is when Adar tries to kill Sauron since in the s2 BTS footage they've released in the last week they show Adar with snow on his coat.

I really do like the perspective of how and why places in season 1 looked a little too clean and how its gonna slowly change into darkness over most of it season by season as many places end up getting destroyed or corrupted . Its a little detail that i hope Amazon takes advantage of for the next few seasons. Like a scary Hourglass effect as time goes by, darkness creeps in episode by episode taking over the light

So many lore mistakes (talking about Ryan, because listing lore mistakes in the show would be WAY too exhausting)...
2:48 Ryan mentions Gandalf arriving a few thousand years early as breaking lore, but not the Harfoots breaking lore for the same reason.
4:02 Ryan is right to question the appearance of the balrog so early (he shows up in the 3rd Age), but Gimli (and everyone else) knows that Moria fell long before the Hobbit and Gimli was thinking his uncle Balin had retaken it. It is unclear who knew (if anyone) that Durin's Bane was a balrog.
6:20 Sauron did not gift the three rings to the elves. In the books/movies, they were made without his knowledge.
9:00 Gondor was not a city. Gondor was a nation - the Southern Kingdom established by Elendil and ruled jointly by Isildur and Anarion. The city is Minas Anor (later renamed to Minas Tirith).
10:50 In the books, it was the dwarves that came to the aid of the elves in Eregion against Sauron and allowed Elrond to escape.
11:20 Sauron fooled them in making the 16 rings (given to men and dwarves), he didn't know about the three until after he made th4e One. The elves instantly became aware of him and took their rings off. They didn't overcome his control, they avoided it. Only after he was defeated in the Battle of the Last Alliance did they dare put them on again.
