If you’re confused about episode 1, and what was happening to Oscar Isaac, we’ve put out a few explainer videos. But basically, in the comics, the character suffers from Dissociative Identity disorder, or DUD-commonly known as multiple personality disorder. So when Steven was speaking to his other self in the mirror, he was communicating with Marc Spector-the mercenary who became moon knight in the comics.
We begin with echoes of moon KNight’s fight with the jackal spirit that was doing the bidding of Ammit. And the camera begins moving across sand, making us think that this is the sands of the desert-and it turns out to be the sand surrounding Steven's bed. But-this does foreshadow the last show of the episode, which actually does end in Egypt.
When he wakes up, he first believes that the fight was all in his mind. [garth clip]
Then he looks at his reflection in his triple vanity, but we only see 2 reflections-because at this point, he’s only aware of one other identity-Marc. IN the comics, Marc has several identities. And we actually think that we’ve seen some major hints about one of the other ones in the series, which we’re going to go over in a video in just a couple days. But we can see hints of this third identity when the camera slowly moves and a 3rd reflection comes into frame-out of focus.
When he enters the museum, the camera hangs upside down, to show that his entire world is about to be twisted upside down.
The security guard still calls Steve by the wrong name. Which is probably a hint that sometimes Steven shows up here as one of his other identities. He warns the guard. Area 51 is the all-too real place where the government pretends to store alien tech to throw us off their scent. And MI-6 is the british spy agency that James Bond belongs to. Now in the comics there is another group called MI-13, composed of heroes like Blade, Black Knight, and Union jack. I’m bringing them up because we have a video coming out soon about how it looks like Blade is forming a similar team in England-the MCU’s version of the midnight sons.
I thought this large bank of monitors was an interesting design choice, because video footage is a way of looking at a past version of yourself-in many ways, another version of you. So this large bank of monitors reflects Steven's shattered psyche.
The hound of the Baskervilles is the first sherlock holmes mystery novel, about a scoopy-doo like murder where everyone blames a supernatural being, the cursed hound of the baskervilles. But it later turns out the hound was real, a human was behind the murder, you get it. Here the guard is saying that Steven is trying to say it’s supernatural, but it will all turn out to be his fault.
When Steven’s gets called into HR, he focuses on this water feature showing two different pools cascading downward. I could be reading too much into this, but I think there’s some symbolism here. After all, Steven is very fixated on this image. Water is often a metaphor for the soul. This water could represent the souk of mark and steven, and each pool is a different identity. The minds are connected, but apart. But the soul lives in both minds, and the soul has been promised to Konshu.
And when the meeting ends he has to surrender his name tag. In effect, surrendering his identity- a way of symbolizing he’s about to surrender his life of independence to Marc and Konshu. And also, Stephen sees his reflection in the desk, a way of hinting at his multiple identities.
There is also meaning in the Egyptian statue’s in the man’s office. This appears to be a god twitching the head of a crocodile. This could be Ammet, the villain of the show-or, it could be Sobek, the god of the nile.
But this painting is very interesting. It looks like Sekhmet. This Lion Goddess was a warrior, and the alter ego of Bast. Yes, the Best from black Panther [clip]. We put out a video last week discussing the connection between these gods, Black panther, and Bast.

Easter egg that was overlooked: Steven has a pyramid shaped paper wheight. later on when he is locked up inside a glass pyraimd it symbolizes that Steven is as significant as a paper wheight.
also - throughout this episode there were many shattered glass and fractured reflection which symbolizes a transition in the charecter state of mind.
One last thing: "Layla" is Arabic for Night. so in away our hero is married to the night

Well, a couple of things... you could think of a paper weight symbolizing stability - it literally holds documents down and prevents them from flying off in a breeze. The glass pyramid you mention could symbolize the concept of a glass house and throwing stones. Steven is often very quick to point out the faults of Marc while ignoring his own faults - he was incredibly trusting of Harrow in the beginning and willing to give Harrow the scarab jewelry without knowing anything about Harrow or the scarab.

I think it was significant that Harrow just outright murdered the homeless guy who found the scarab--he didn't even pretend to do the soul judging schtick he used in Episode 1. It's good evidence for the theory that Ammit's not truly judging anyone, but instead just helping Harrow kill people to make a point or when it's convenient.

@@andmicbro1 And when you think about it, justifying murder based on something you say the person will do in the future is the perfect excuse because there's no way to disprove it.
My mythology-loving daughter also pointed about that it's not really Ammit's job to judge souls; traditionally, Anubis is the judge and Ammit just the executioner. I wonder if the fact that Ammit is trying to steal Anubis's job will come up if/when we see the other gods in future episodes.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the "ooooh goat" part by Oscar Isaac wasn't scripted and that's why Ethan Hawke looks genuinely surprised. Also, I definitely think you’re right about a third identity. I’m not sure if they’ll ever tell us who the original identity is (I kind of hope they keep it a mystery forcing us to accept all his identities as valid) but Marc mentions “the one who owns this body” as if he was talking about someone else or another identity. Also Konshu says “you think you own this body?” which could mean he owns it because of the deal that was made but also could mean that there is or was another identity.

Perhaps even the first episode is when Steven gains control of the body for the first time. When he wakes up, he seems confused as to where he is and why he’s tied to the bed. My theory is that Marc moved to London and created the fake identity, Steven Grant, but due to his DID and fracturing of his mind, Steven was born into a full fledged alter and assumed the role based on what Marc had created. Also given that they’ve been pretty quite on Jake so far, maybe there was some sort of conflict between Jake and Marc and that lead to Marc taking the measures of trapping himself in his apartment at night.

i love the fact that ethan hawke has said he based harrow on david koresh, working the character from an easentially blank slate since he only makes one comic appearance... so hawke said when he thought of what epitomizes a great cult leader, he felt that david koresh was the one who fit the story best... imo, you can def. see the strong influence if you watch some old footage of koresh during the whole branch davidians nannerz back in the day...

It's obviously Marc at the end, not a third personality. He takes control from Steven and says he's going to finish this. That's why he isn't surprised he's in Cairo, he's going after the tomb of Ahmet which would obviously be in Egypt.

Moon Knight having moon-influenced strength isn't exclusive to the werewolf bite run. In the 1985 MK run, when the Khonshu priests convince him to serve again, they imbue him with increased strength under the moon. Several of those comics feature scenes of him surprised by or testing out this increased strength.

2 more easter eggs that I saw:
    1. When Steven gets sacked from his job, the man he is speaking to is wearing a sweatshirt from the National Art Gallery, not the national History museum - showing Steven's weak grasp on reality/what is true and false
    2. At the end, you can see in the mirror that Marc is wearing a Magen David (Star of David) necklace, the symbol of Judaism. We can therefore assume that it is Marc in that scene, as the comics know him as a Jewish character.

I used to live in London and I realised here that it's not the British Museum - it's the National Gallery (the HR guy has National Art Gallery on his jumper too although I'm pretty sure that's not the logo).
The British museum makes more sense for him to work at as that has the huge Egyptian exhibits but the National Gallery is in Trafalgar Square which is much more famous to an international audience than Holborn where the museum is. That's my take anyway.
