  • WEREWOLF BY NIGHT takes the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the depths of horror--as an homage to the black and white heyday of the monster movie genre in the 40s and 50s. Marvel's "Special Presentation" includes a TON of MCU Easter Eggs, including connection to Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, Loki, and of course...Kang the Conqueror and BLADE.

    #WereWolfByNight #EsterEggs #Marvel
Jack Russel’s Werewolf first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #2 in 1972. Jack Russell inherited a curse from his father. A curse that began on his 18th birthday, making it to where on every full moon Jack transforms into a Werewolf. In the comics he’s had interaction with chara cters such as Morbious, Spider-Woman, and Iron Man. And has served as a member of Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
Midnight Suns is a team of primarily supernatural Marvel heroes who go up against supernatural threats. A direction the MCU seems to be going in with characters like Werewolf, Moonknight, and Blade. In fact we made a video breaking down how Pmarvel is obviously building up to a Midnight Suns movie, with Blade, Werewolf by night, Moon Knight, Agatha Harkness, and-we guessed it-Elsa Bloodstone. [spaceballs when you’re right clip, I’ll find]
Now if Werewolf by Night sounds familiar, you’ve likely heard that his solo comic featured the first appearance of Moon knight. [clip, something funny with Stephen maybe]. There were lots of QR codes in the series that took you to his first appearance, 1975’s Werewolf by night number 32. People really bought 34 issues of comic about a werewolf. .
Doug: It was a different time.
Hopefully we’ll see Jack Russell’s Werewolf and Moonknight go toe to toe in a future MCU project, and then eventually work together in something like Midnight Suns. [clip]
Werewolf by Night is labeled as a “Marvel Studios Special Presentation” It is done in the vein of a classic 1930’s horror film. [clip]
But it takes place in the present day MCU. And according to Kevin Feige, we are being introduced to a new world that will play an important role in the future of the MCU. [clip]
The film opens with the Marvel Studios intro in black and white being interrupted by scratch marks and roars. Perhaps indicating that the Werewolf is clawing his way into the MCU.
We then see a drawing of the original six Avengers. Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, and Thor. I think it’s interesting that even though three of these characters have died, the MCU still showcases these six Avengers as the team.
We’ve also seen the original six featured recently in some knock off merch in She-Hulk. [clip]
This to me plays into the fact that we don’t really have a team of Avengers at the moment. [clip, Talos “where are the Avengers” Far From Home.]
Next we can see a drawing of a monster. This text near it translates to “a winged monster of virtue…effectively and completely corrupts.”
We can also see a drawing labeled faces of the moon. Of course in reference to a full moon triggering the transformation of Werewolves. The faces of the moon could also be a nod to Moon Knight. IN the comics, at one point-his powers were tied directly to the phases of the moon. But in later years the phases became more of a metaphor for his dissociative Identity disorder [clip],
More monsters arefeatured as the narrator talks about the monster hunters. Specifically the Bloodstones [who control the quote “powerful, supernatural, relic” the Bloodstone. ]
Now in the comics we have several red stones and gems that have come into play. Such as the Reality Stone and the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. Then there are the Blood Stones, a group of five stones that the sorcerer, Belasco of the Corrupted, used to open portals between Earth and Limbo. Limbo being a dimension of demons we may have gotten a glimpse of in She-Hulk. [clip]
But we think the bloodstone is almost certainly based on the bloodgem. A gem that survived the collapse of one universe and traveled through time and space, eventually landing amidst the big bang of the 616 Marvel comics universe. [clip, Wong Big Bang Infinity Stones.]
The bloodgem eventually winds up on earth in 8250 B.C.
In fact if this bloodstone has a similar origi than it can tie directly into WandaVision, chaos magic, and the scarlet with.

I like that they were so committed to the black and white gag that they not only had the photographic grain and lint you on old movie film, but also the little burn in the top right corner that signaled a change in movie reels. Also Swamp thing and Man thing are said to be more likely inspired by much earlier comics, It (1940) or possibly The Heap (1942).

I think the film being in black and white represents the monster hunters' black-and-white thinking regarding monsters. To them "monsters" are all bad and can't be good guys like Jack and Ted. The scene with Esla Bloodstone where the film turns to full colour is showing how her views on monsters has changed.

It was the best episode yet of the Disney + MARVEL series. Satisfying for the content allowed, I could do with more next time. A constructed tale in decent time to involve enough exposition to clue you in on the proceedings moving the story forward using lore any film buff would find familiar. Black and white gives it a cinematic field of Abbott and Costello meets Lon Chaney. In black and white the camera is able to let actors be dramatic in close-ups, where you see what they see by their expressions. When the acting is good It's so exhilarating. Cut the corpse reading the will last testament and hunt out and it's 🤌🏽

    2 Easter eggs:
    1. The white circles that flash every now and again are homage to cigarette burns. Way back in black and white film era filmmakers smoked so much that it damaged the film from the cameras making those white circles.
    2. Elsa aka Laura Donnelly played a werewolf herself and Merlin's love interest way back in 2009 in BBC Merlin.

  • @Macknzie
    @Macknzie Год назад +1

One thing you missed: there's a "cigarette burn" sequence, at least two (I think only two). The first was just after the initial encounter between the axe guy and Elsa. The second was the scene where they were captured. These are marks in the top right of the frame meant to indicate in old theaters when to change the reels. Obviously, this one was artificially inserted to mimic old film movies. Nice touch, chef's kiss.

Don't think that vampire is Dracula its more like Nosferatu or his species of ancient vampire. Its fangs are at the front and not in the K9 position like Dracula. Also I know you said that the tapestry character looked like the comic Gorr, but as this is MCU and we've seen what Gorr looks in MCU, have to say it looks identical to Tarn the uncaring of Aarakko from the X-men comics. Must say this show impressed me how it totally match the genre and feel it was aiming for of the classic B&W monster movies of the era and tbh (obviously down to modern makeup, prosthetics and cgi) improved on them to a degree. Can clearly see marvel moving on with this multi-pronged approach covering as many genres as they can. Sci-fi space, magic and fantasy, horror, action adventure, sitcom, adult viewing only (hoping this will be what deadpool is) and the classic Superhero stories. So they literally have all bases covered content wise. IMO phase 4 is test the waters phase see what works and not multiverse so much as multigenre. Obviously to see which ones land and are gonna make them the money.
