Google are on a mission to make ALL sites on the internet use SSL. Soon, you'll pretty much NEED to have all your WordPress sites using HTTPS.
I see people tripping up on all sorts of steps of the process all the time. After helping at least someone fix SSL-related problems once a week, I thought it time to make a guide.
This is the ULTIMATE guide to switching a WordPress website to HTTPS-especially for non-coders.

I've only recently discovered Dave's excellent tutorials. They're concise, informative and delivered in a very professional way. I look after a couple of community websites that have no commercial intent. They are purely for our membership to find information about what's going on. I've purposely not switched on the search engine find facility so it doesn't skew my data.
But I'm aware that the new 'rules' on ssl still probably apply. I'm not sure but I think they do? The last thing I want is my elderly members being frightened off using our website because they see "not secure" messages popping up in front of their eyes as they browse. Let's hope I can follow Dave's advice and get rid of my worries on this topic. :-)

Thank you! I was having problems with my certificate being valid and everything in place but still getting a not secure symbol. you tutorial is the one thing that helped me solve my issue. And I love your humour by the way.
This video is excellent. It helped me overcome my fear. I have now switched four of my sites from http to https. I started with the one that was least critical. It went well though my hosting company wanted me to use both the Really Simple SSL plugin AND their own force SSL option - they surely have their reasons. One plugin's data got lost during the transition (Global Content Blocks) but I luckily noticed that with the first site. So when I got to the most critical site, I had prepared a table with all shortcuts and corresponding code. When the site was switched to https, I could recreate the three or four important Global Content Blocks (for AdSense ads). I will later replace Global Content Blocks with a new plugin. Thank you so much for this video, Dave! Very helpful.

Hi Dave, in the video you say that after entering a new https profile in the "Google search console" we should delete the old "http" ? I thought that we have to keep both profile ?

No you don't have to keep the old HTTP one now. The HTTPS URLs doesn't exist anymore, if you've followed the instructions.
You might be getting confused with how you are sometimes advised to keep profiles for a www AND a non-www version of your site. That's not a bad idea, although I personally don't bother.

WOW!! So I'm with DreamPress and they gave me this long list of things to do by adding a plugin for Let's Encrypt. Just spent two hours on it - even contacted live help. Watched this video and see I just had to go to Settings/General and add the letter s to my address. Thanks a bunch.

The only thing I ran into was that certbot didn't update the Apache configurations correctly.
It mixed the certificates and aliases in the SSL config file.

Using UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin would help if I update my wordpress to another version and something goes wrong? Copying files from FTP to computer has the same effect?

I watched number of videos online to solve the ssl problem, I still can't get the green padlock. But after watching your video and I change the elementor url from http to https, I got the green padlock. I just like to say, "your video was the only video that solved my problem at the end. so thank you very much!"
That's really great to hear! Yes, this is one of those jobs where you have to cover every single step, very easy to miss some of them. :)

You don't have to leave that plugin installed, no. Though if you installed Really Simple SSL you DO have to have that activated all the time.

Great tutorial. I am concerned about one issue and that is that the domain name is now different. Do all the backlinks going TO THE http address now not count? How does that affect rankings.
The Better Search Replace plugin doesn't allow me to make any changes to it, it only gives me the option to activate it. Will activating it automatically make the changes I need?
