Why I Left YouTube for 3 Years... and What's Coming Next

  • Hey there! You might have noticed I’ve been away from RUclips for over 3 years now, which is crazy.
    I get asked all the time where I’ve been, when am I coming back to RUclips, which builder I’m using and teaching now.... all that stuff.
    So before I crank up the channel again, I thought I’d very quickly make a more personal video, to answer all those questions in one place.
    And you might be surprised by some of the answers.

    Wonderful to see you back, Dave! I always enjoyed your content and your approach to teaching it...somehow, you just clicked with me. I'm sticking with Elementor. I find it works well for my needs and I'm still growing. I can dissect code well, but creating from scratch just frustrates me. In my SEO days, I got exposed to a variety of builders like Beaver Builder, Divi, and Visual Builder...all just gave me the willies. Elementor has matured well over the last couple of years, albeit painfully, but I feel it's still a very strong tool for many. I'm really looking forward to seeing you here again, especially if you are covering Elementor. Cheers!

    • @DaveFoy
      @DaveFoy  10 месяцев назад +1

      Great to hear from you too, Jim! I hear from a lot of people that they just don't need or want to build from scratch with bare building blocks, and that's totally cool. It's exactly what I was getting at in this video. There's room for everyone, thankfully. :)
      I had a similar experience when I had a phase of a few years doing SEO as well. It was that, and also working with non-coder designers, that exposed me to page builders in the first place, but I was hand-coding before that.
      Elementor's definitely had a painful few years, I couldn't use it. But I'm liking a lot of what I'm seeing at the moment, definitely going in the right direction.

    • @Jim.Hummel
      @Jim.Hummel 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@DaveFoy - I think Elementor has finally grown out of its adolescence and now can play with the more senior crowd.
      I admire hand-coders but code doesn't click with everyone (like me!). I struggle with creating code but am decent at troubleshooting existing code. It is what it is...
      I'm delving into CSS more as I occasionally hit brick walls with Elementor widgets and a bit of CSS is quicker than juggling settings back and forth.

    My team is still loving Elementor. Especially with the new flex box features, it's faster than ever for us to build with it.
    If you decided to create an updated version of your Elementor course, I'd buy it in a heart beat. I still train new team members using NSWP because even though Elementor is very different now, the best practices you teach about efficient page building still apply.
    That said, an updated flex box course for Elementor would be so amazing. Glad to have you back Dave!

    Well Said Dave. It gets really frustrating in communities when people start bashing other development environments. Some builders royally do my head in but if others like them, great!
    Personally, if those that push a builder suddenly had everyone jump on board, they probably would not like it as variation is where it is at and we all know it (and should let it be).

      @@DaveFoy NSWP and the Funnel Builder course were two of the most comprehensive and digestible courses I have ever done. I did feel it was a bit of a dark day when you left Elementor after getting me addicted to the page builder - so I can't tell you how delighted I was to hear you may eventually be returning to make some new content on elementor. Just like you cannot drive two cars at once you have to decide on Page Builder and go with it. It is too big of an investment in both money and more importantly - time to develop any real commercial proficiency in it. Bricks and other page builders may still be a "Bridge too Far" for me at this point in time.

    What was the reason why you switched from webflow back to Wordpress? I see a huge advantage in the fact that you don't have any plugin updates or compatibility problems with webflow. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @DaveFoy
      @DaveFoy  2 месяца назад +1

      Because the lack of plugins ended up being a big problem in reality. I hit so many cases where I'd be able to install a (often) free plugin and have the functionality I need. Also, I didn't like where the pricing was going, especially if your site got popular or you needed more dynamic data. In the end, I decided my heart was with open source WP, not a closed solution. But... there are no perfect solutions. Ultimately, you have to decide which compromises you're willing to accept.

      I'm currently "stuck" in Elementor as my main builder, and have also been dabbling with other builders, as well as the GutenTurd tools, but like you, I'm not feeling it yet. I picked up Bricks on day one to support the project, and have been waiting for it to mature before I get stuck in. It seems that time might be now.

    • @RichardWadeUK
      @RichardWadeUK 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@DaveFoy Elementor does most things, but it went down a bad path for a while, hence your moving away, and it was quite stagnant in enhancements and you need a bunch of different plugins/tools to solve issues and complete projects which should be built in by now (especially for dynamic content - which seems to be gradually resolving). Then there is the annual subscription - I like LTD's to control the overhead.
      The biggest punch in the face early on was removing my unlimited license and capping to 1000 websites - which in the scheme of things, isn't the end of the world but it's also the principle of being missold a product
