SSL on Wordpress? - How I activate HTTPS on WordPress Sites. No plugin required

SSL is becoming more important with secure sites becoming the standard and costs of SSL certificates becoming less. There are different ways to setup SSL on a WordPress site and after doing a few different ways and working with hosting support, here's the method I've landed on. I like it because it doesn't require a plugin to be left active.

My wordpress wont allow me to add the "S" in the address box, the box is grayed out.. Any ideas?
It seems that means the site URL is set somewhere else. More info here: wordpress.org/support/topic/cannot-change-site-address-or-url-in-wp-settings/

I used certbot to create a certificate for my website but now it is messed up. I set up a domain through google domains and have a daemon that is updating my dynamic IP through google's API. It shows a white page with information that proves its connecting to the webpage but Its mostly white with some random text elements and i cant access any pages except the first one. its like the page loads but not all the way. every other page gives "oops, that page could not be found" It was working (albeit still showing http and insecure) so I changed the WP domain name in the settings from http to https. Thats when this started. I am unable to access the wp-admin, even on my lan so now i cant change it back. I dont really want to reinstall wordpress. I did not install any ssl apps in wordpress so maybe its eliminating everything that doesnt come through https. If theres a way to change a config file to change the domain name without having to log in to wp then where is it located? Help is greatly appreciated. The webpage is www.andrewsdiyprojects.com You have to put www to get it to work however.

The site seems to be loading fine at HTTPS but there's no content on the 2 pages. If I wanted to change the site URL for WordPress without accessing the site, I would go into the database and edit it in the wp-config file. I don't see any evidence that you have a WordPress site though. It appears you're using Google Sites which I don't have muchexperience with.

For anybody who knows a bit about web hosting or building websites this is simple. For the average person however it isn't. It assumes a lot of knowledge. Troubleshooting errors for example from Why not Padlock can be complicated and most beginners wont even know where to start...Video is OK

Error: Invalid Intermediate::You have an invalid or missing intermediate (bundle) certificate. This may not break your padlock on all browsers, but will on others. Please contact your SSL Vendor for assistance with this error.

Ryan, do you know what to do if we let our SSL expire on our Wordpress site that has a force ssl plugin. Now, I cant get into the website Dashboard !
You could renew the SSL or on the warning page you can proceed to the site by clicking Advanced or something like that depending on browser.

I can't answer that. It depends if your website is on WWW or non-www. It probably doesn't matter because it likely is setup to redirect. It's best to enter the one that shows up when you go to your site.

Check the steps again to see if you missed something. Or you'll have to contact your host for support. It works as you can see from the many commenters who've used it.

July 2020 - Just wanted to pop in and say I followed this and used the plugin suggested and it worked first time. This was on a multisite so I had to manually use phpmyadmin to edit the options for the home and site values for each but it worked a treat first time no messing around. I then disabled the search and replace plugin. Thank you buddy!

Do you deactivate the search and replace plugin after? Or leave it activated? Will it slow my website down?
Good question - I typically deactivate it and you could even remove it if you don't expect to remove it again. I don't think it will slow down your site if it's inactive but better to remove or pause it.

I'm not recommending a plugin but a process. It should work for your multi-site too.
I uploaded a SSL Plugin to move the entire site to SSL but it ended up slowing my website. So I deactivated and uninstalled it. After using this method, my site is secure and the speed went back to being fast. THANK YOU!
Awesome! I don't think most SSL plugins will slow down your site but why risk it if you don't need them at all. Glad it worked for you.

Sounds like a problem! You need access to your admin to make these and many other changes obviously.

In htaccess file adding the 2 lines of code, spacing of characters is very important. Its difficult to tell spacing in the video. Look at some similar lines of code in your .htaccess file to compare spaces are in same places, like in front of [R,L]. Mine got error without the space. After fixed spacing works great!
It seemed to work for others OK. I have the exact text in my video description.

No - that's pretty strange. I'm wondering if you don't have Admin access to WordPress. When you have lower permissions, you don't have access to all WordPress admin sections

It works. I do it multiple times per week and just did it 15 minutes ago on a site. There are lots of commenters who are using it successfully. You may want to double-check the steps. You may have gone wrong somewhere.

Pricing on SSL is a little confusing. Free certificates are often shared. I noticed this on my site a few weeks ago that my free SSL certificate through Cloudflare was shared with 30 other sites including some of a questionable nature. I decided to pay for my own dedicated SSL cert. There are also domain-validated and organization-validated (better) certificates that most larger companies have. My understanding is that the actual security will be the same on most certificates but the level of verification is higher for the the more expensive certificates which should allow for more trust from your visitors.

what happens if I then uninstall the plugin?
Which plugin are you referring to? The process I describe doesn't require plugins but if you're using a plugin for SSL security and then uninstall it, your site will no longer be secure.

Oh, no you can deactivate/remove that plugin. It makes a permanent change to the site so removing it will not remove the change.

Now I have another problem, I change the url http by https, and every time I'm going to make some movement within the site, the session closes automatically. and i try to put it back in http, but now this change has no effect
