So to, in essence, wrap up this short little thread; i just finished the main series. It was pretty damn good. Seed of Destruction was a hard read, took me a bit to get into it and i kept getting distracted by other matters (mostly my fault) but when starting Strange Places i was immediately sucked in, finishing it in about 2 days and then moving directly onto The Wild Hunt- finished in 1, and a few hours ago i began Hellboy in Hell and just now finished it. A little rocky at first (by my own hand) but was held pretty tightly until the final omnibus. I know theres more and I read out of order due the one shots and short stories inbetween Strange Places and The Wild Hunt- hell the reason I started reading Hellboy (Hellboy In Mexico) wasn’t even in the omnibus set (go figure haha) along with The Devil You Know but i doubt ill find a time where i do go back and find/read those to understand the rest of the story, because for now im damn satisfied with the story i read- at least the parts of it i did.
TLDR: it was great, but there was no hellboy in mexico

And Hellboy does literally all of that, but for me it was more Heroic to see an extremely reserved and sad dude dig himself out from his own horrible circumstances and never dragging anyone down with him because of it. That’s a very nice way to look at a hero

What I personally love about Hellboy, is how he is effortlessly badass, and also completly lame, in such an endearing way.
In a vaccum, a gunsling demon detective who sawed off his own horns and fights monsters on the regular is such a cool concept, but then you hear him say the corniest one-liners, like he _wants_ to sound badass. It grounds him in a really nice way.
I also love how *nice* he is: he's a bit grumpy and quite stoic, sure, but from the first comic you see how much he cares for other people, how he chooses to be good in spite of his fate (and how much it fucks him over). He's also good with kids, quite patient, and barely curses, which you don't expect from a guy with his looks.
Mike Mignola could have so easily gone with the "badass male power fantasy that treats everyone like shit" trope, but instead he made one of my favorite comic characters.

I feel like Hellboy breaks so many molds. From it's abstract presentation in art to how Hellboy interacts with the world around him. It's a one of a kind series in my opinion and one that should have a light casted on it more often. Lots of people were disappointed by the last film, but at least we got two good ones, two solid animated films, and a great TV pilot of Screw On Head. Hellboy sadly has never enjoyed a good video game outing. Despite the material offering plenty of potential for a great video game adaptation. Unfortunately, the gaming world has not show any interest in adapting Hellboy. A shame since the game could be a tapestry of exploration, unique character/world interactions, and unique combat.

It’s one of the best stories ever told, let alone among American comic books, where it’s typical to maintain the status quo and completely undo any changes made to the characters and lore.
Hellboy is amazing because the story is allowed to progress and Hellboy himself turns corners of character progression and is never reset. Those are the same things that attracted me to Invincible and they’re the things that separate the masterworks in comics from the politicized, vapid corporate schlock Marvel and DC are pushing out.

It taught me that even though the world is full of so many snakes and monsters - we can beat every last one of them down into submission. I sometimes even think that all of this fight happen internally with our thoughts. We fight of so
many bad thoughts that are toxic to us. We should fight them off one by one without mercy until we are happy with life. No matter how dark it can be - be thankful of the simplest things. As simple as being able to breath with our nose or even being able to taste how sweet a mango fruit can be. That is the ultimate emotional strength. It got me emotional sometimes. After reading Hellboy, I've noticed some similar themes between it and Berserk. Like going against fate and destiny, forging your own path, the protagonist loses an eye, and both use large weapons to fight their enemies. And both can be mistaken as the bad guy.
Edit: You made a great Hellboy video. There are few videos discussing the greatness of the Hellboy comic, and I wish more more content creators would make analysis videos on Hellboy. It's truly a great series and one I would recommend to anyone who likes Berserk. Also you earned yourself a subscriber!

In the early 2000s I first read “The Chained Coffin and Others” and I always tell folks to start there. The stories are perfect for setting up HB’s character and how he exists as only a part of that weird paranormal world. Also, The Wolves of Saint August is some of Mignola’s best art/writing. It makes reading his origin later even more engaging because you are now more invested into the character and world.
    Furthermore, Lobster Johnson rules.

So having never read Berserk, I'm not sure of the comparisons. But HellBoy is a masterpiece. Wasn't aware of all the controversy surrounding the editor. I managed to read the story in chunks with the trades and now I'm finding there's a lot of HellBoy outside of the main story arc for me to read which again I'm acquiring in chunks. My favorite story arc so far is "Darkness Calls". That whole thing with the Baba Yaga, Koschei the Deathless and Vasilisa is epic on a level few stories achieve. It's making me want to delve deeper into Russian folklore and read the original versions of these characters.

Hellboy's reluctance to take the clear path to do whatever he wants really sets him apart and character development. This definitely has some shonen parallels. The religious / occult aspects and comedic dark mood of hellboy remind me of chainsawman, and hellboy's episodic wandering from place to place nature remind of BLAME! Hellboy. I can see several parallels on berserk with some western comics (art/script) like Prince Valiant, the Roy Thomas/John Buscema long run on Conan, Alfredo Alcala's Voltar and specially Elric by Michael Moorcock's (Stormbringer, Melniboné and the way that society works just to point two examples). Of course they're both forerunners of sword and sorcery/dark fantasy genre as a whole so obviously everyone after them will have some percent of influence, even Tolkien read Conan, but never on hellboy. What always bringed me to Mignola's work was his huge research on folklore from everywhere. Really nice video

The only Manga I have ever desired to and gone out of my way to read was Berserk and similarly the only Comic being Hellboy.
Berserk was for it's story and because of it's influence and all the usual reasons people hype the hell out of it. Reading it for the art was secondary, I only found out it's art was top notch quite a while after I had learned through cultural osmosis how great the rest of it was.
Hellboy however was purely for aesthetic reasons, I always liked Hellboys design and I loved Mike's artstyle, aside from cool demon man hunts mythological monsters and occult stuff as a paranormal government agent I kinda knew nothing going in so it's fun to see the two compared here despite me seeking them out for different reasons.

    You can't Compare them.
Because if there are Good Manga's, then there are Good Comics as well.
If Manga has The Best Stories such as Berzerk, that doesn't mean that Comics are complete BS.
There are a lot of things that make them diffrent.
    Diffrent Concepts, Habits etc.

In the novels three of his companions that have never met each other before meet in a bar, waiting for Baltimore to arrive they each tell their stories of how they came into contact with the man.
