This may sound kinda weird, but I needed Berserk. I needed to see Guts let go of his rage and make a conscious choice to move on and live with his trauma without being defined by it. Because I needed to do that too. I started reading Berserk at one of the lowest points in my life, I was suicidal, I had barely repressed memories bubbling to the surface. Seeing him come to terms with his childhood and deal with how it affected his development gave me an emotional template to follow. A few years later I met a girl in highschool, we fell in love, and she confided in me that she had been raped the previous year. I remember that time as a whirlpool of highs and lows, the joy and excitement of new love contrasted with unimaginable rage and feelings of impotence and helplessness. As I kept reading, I saw a character I admired going on an emotional journey similar to mine yet again, and it helped, it really did. Ultimately, think Berserk transcends the grim-dark nihilism of its early arcs and becomes a deeply humanistic story about the value of found family and finding new reasons to live.
Thank you, Kentaro Miura, for being the best therapist I never hired.

The reason I identify with the way Miura handles the progression of guts over time is because its so damn realistic. Even in the real world, we are constantly told to not struggle, and to never face what makes us tick. Seeing Guts not only survive, but vehemently contest with all of the suffering he is subject to, is amazing. Kind of spiritual, in a way. I've never seen a piece of writing other than Berserk perfectly encapsulate the terrible process of having your convictions tested. On a purely philosophical level, this manga is in its own league. We truly are not going to be alive for anything that even comes close. Living with the hole in my chest and actively trying to embody the teachings of this manga is my own personal way of Honoring Miura for everything he's done for me.

Yes there are some gruesome stuff that happens but all in all the story telling is made to get you to think about this stuff. The lost children arc is one that I feel gets neglected too much. Terrific enemy design, a great look into Guts' darker side, but also hints at the strong soul he has.

    • @brancolt_
      @brancolt_ 5 лет назад +357

It also reaffirms his strong attachment to the concept of childhood. Even though he hates apostles no questions asked, he screws up three perfect oportunities to kill Rosine because of her childlike appearance. Throughout this arc he tries his best to make Jill avoid him by stating he wouldn't stop his sword if she was in the way, but it's a lie, he just wants her to stay away from such dangers. The spirits in this arc take the form of the dead child apostle spawns and Guts gets visibly disturbed. And even if the reader doesn't get this, the last pages with him comforting Jill with his black cloak, warning her of the darkness around him will surely get through.
This is important because it perfectly solidfiies Guts as a protector first and a rage monster second, for the next arc. When he comes to the conclusion that his travels during the last 2 years searching for revenge were wasted and he finds fulfilment in protecting the now broken Casca, even though "the sword feels heavier" and he feels hopelessness, it's his duty and his purpose. From then on, all of his actions during battle are devoted to protecting those around him.

Did anyone else realize how the scenes of Guts vs Griffith 1 and 2 are opposite in someways. Griffith fought Guts to make him join the hawks and it was sunny outside on a hill with the whole band watching. Casca being upset because Griffith is treating Guts like no one else. The second time they fought on a hill but this time it's snowing and Guts is fighting to leave the hawks. Also Casca is upset again but this time she doesn't want them to fight and she doesn't want Guts to leave. Berserk is truly magnificent.

    • @Creedinger
      @Creedinger 5 лет назад +71

This is one of the saddest themes of berserk. At first Casca is in love with Griffith and sees Guts as a danger to griffith and the group. She is dependent on Griffith as he is the leader of the person cult. Throughout the series she sees Guts positive influence to her and the group as a whole and she sees that his feelings for the group are more genuine than Griffiths.
Casca realizes the dynamics between Guts Griffith and the group so it is not only that she does not want Guts to leave when she does not want them to fight. During the Eclipse she cries out for Guts but not Griffith and we all know how this turned out and in which situation casca was within the next arc and it also strings me when I see casca crying out for Griffith whenever she sees him.

What I loved most about Berserk my first time going through it, was how during the Golden age arc everything seemed like fairly normal dark fantasy, with a rough and gritty medieval setting where besides the guy swinging around a big sword around like it was a kitchen knife seemed fairly accurate to that era. Then, to see it all go wrong, to see those hints that the world wasn't quite as you thought, like when we meet Zodd for the first time, and the skull knight, it leads you on like that's all this story will ever be, and then BAM the god hand moment hits us right as the cast are at their lowest, with their charismatic leader crippled beyond repair and our protagonist ready to head off on his own, everything is turned upside down entirely. I love how you as a viewer get lead on with these expectations of how things are and will turn out, only to get the whole thing flipped upside down and turned on it's head. For me it was such a shock, people who've watched GOT or something for the first time likely experienced something similar, it was raw disbelief of what I was seeing, I couldn't even imagine a story unfolding in such a way prior to discovering it. I was complete and utterly blindsided and loved every damn second. It was that moment that I knew I would love berserk until the end of my days. That to me was the real genius.

ok clearly you missed the point of the modern continuations. Obviously the remakes were made using PS2 graphics in order to not only show us truly what Gut's feels on the inside, but to also make us physically suffer along with him. The cutty lack of inbetween frames despite the project being almost entirely in CG with occasional anime overlays is also to show us that at the core of our being, we are all missing just a couple "inbetween frames". Its due to those choppy motions and downright unwatchable fight scenes that make the modern TV adaptions such a meta-defining experience beyond what any other sort of cinema medium has to offer. Not unlike watching shrek in 4D and being sneezed on (but that's for another time.)

Griffith is a coward. Not only does he turn self-destructive when Guts leave, as if it was a surprise, but he accept the illusion put forth by the apostles that his only option to achieve his dream is through yielding to them and therefore to what they call causality. So he capitulates his free will to the apostles who tricked him and sacrifice the people who actually helped him and actually could produce the outcome of making his dream reality, unlike the apostles who consume him, his friends and their dreams. In a way he didn't believe enough in his dream or that he deserved it so he destroyed it when Guts left.
Perhaps he knew that Guts was the only one truly capable of materializing his dreams as he did not yield to the apostles or anyone else for that matter.

The problem is that the detail of Berserk is really intimidating. It'd take so much time that it would have to be the only thing the studio worked on. Also it'd probably have to be 3D. It also would have to be seasonal, probably 12 episodes a season and one season a year, so it would require them to commit to it for YEARS. Assuming they're adapting 400 chapters at the pace of 2 chapters an episode with 12 episode seasons, it would about 17 years to finish. For a studio to work on nothing but Berserk for 17 years is unrealistic at best.

The thing is, it needs to be hand-drawn, which is pretty untenable in the modern anime landscape. The act of hand-drawing and actually painting would give those environments a gritty, lived-in feel that usually looks a little phony in computer 2-D animation. And the budget to create that level of detail would have to be out of this world. The only way I think it would happen is if a Berserk fan became a billionaire, and then funded the whole thing with his/her own money.

Berserk has changed so many of our lives over these years, and for some, it has even been our sole saving grace. Miura poured everything he had into this story, and it will forever go down in history as one of, if not the best, manga ever written.
I don't remember where this quote came from, I think it has been warped over the years, but it went something like this:
"People die three times. The first is when their body and mind cease to function. The second is when they are consigned to the grave. The third is when their name is forgotten. Some people only face the first two. Isn't that beautiful?"
Miura will never face the third death, and will forever be remembered for generations to come.
Rest in Peace forevermore, Kentaro Miura.

41 minutes in, but I've been thinking about what you said about Guts being nothing to Griffith. I think the opposite, Guts is the only person in the whole world who is anything but a tool to Griffith. ( Very late at night, this train of thought has kept me up so expect spelling errors and I also expect I've forgotten things I should've mentioned. )
Every person Griffith ever interacts with is but a tool to him, he sees himself as superior to everyone in every way. He sees himself as the perfect human/being and when Guts decides to leave in the Golden Age arc, Griffith goes to punish and reclaim his best tool by besting Guts in combat. But, Guts wins. In that moment, in Griffith's eyes Guts is elevated to Griffith's status. He is no longer his best tool but a human worth his respect. And at the same time, this human, the only one Griffith has ever considered his equal, in Griffith's eyes, betray him by leaving. The perfect image Griffith has of himself has cracked. A tiny crack is enough to ruin perfection. This leads to Griffith's path of self destruction, feelings of unworthiness and shattered self esteem overtakes Griffith. He tries to remedy this by sleeping with the princess, but it does nothing for him but leave him feeling more hollow.
He continues having these feelings of not being worthy of the goal he set up for himself as he's being tortured, but yet he does not completely break because even if he deems himself unworthy of his dream he still wishes for it. When he is saved by Guts and the rest, a hope comes to life within him. Maybe he is not unworthy, the only man he ever considered his equal ( or atleast extremely close to being equal ) came back to him after all, came back to serve him. The hope is there but he's still plagued by worries of not being worthy, of being not perfect. So when the wagons stop and he is alone with Casca, ( who used to be his second most useful tool, now his most useful as he no longer considers Guts a mere tool ) he seeks confirmation of him being worthy and perfect, the man who can use his tools however he wants, by attempting to rape her. If he had succeeded, if she had let him, in his mind he would be above Guts in the hierarchy again, and his confidence would be restored. ( He knew about Guts and Casca's romatic relationship, that is why he needed to show to himself that if Casca relented to his advance he was more valuable than even the one she loved. He wasn't romantically interested in Casca in any way, this was just an attempt at proving his power. )
But Casca refused him and stopped him. She even took pity on him and held him in her arms. This was the final straw. This was when he saw no hope of ever achieving his dream with the band of the hawk. And all those worries that plagued him twisted into a need for revenge, revenge on Guts who he blamed for his fall from grace.
Fast forward to after Griffith's transformation, he appears fully demon but I'd say the actions he took after his transformation proved that humanity still resided within him, still there because of Guts not having been sacrificed yet. What remained of Griffith's humanity however was his respect of Guts, need of revenge and need to prove himself as one who controls others as if they're mere tools in his hands for his own ambitions. Him raping Casca fulfilled both of these needs. He did not and does not care about Casca in the least, even if she disobeyed him, she was still not elevated to the same position as Guts in his eyes due to her taking pity on him and staying loyal. Casca was simply a tool to fulfill his needs.
If Griffith had not cared about Guts at all, if he had seen him as nothing more than a tool, he would not have still felt the need for revenge against Guts. He would've simply killed Guts and Casca right there to fully complete the ritual. Did raping Casca serve his ambition, his dream in any way? Did taking revenge on Guts instead of just killing him serve his goal in any way? No, those were acts of his lingering human emotions.
In Griffith's/Femto's mind Guts is still the most respectable human he has ever met. Even further than that, he considers Guts to be the only human he has ever met, not just another tool for him to use and discard. Guts is Griffith's last connection to humanity, if Guts dies, Femto is complete and Griffith is no more. His need for revenge fulfilled, he no longer has any ill feelings towards Guts. The only emotions he has left towards him is respect, even if Griffith/Femto denies it. Behind his perfect emotionless mask, still lies a crack.

Amazing analysis. I have yet only watched the 97 anime. I'm starting to read the manga tho, so I dont really know a bunch about everything. Only considering the anime tho, griffith's humanity seems to be the worse aspect of him. Its becausr of his humanity that he sacrifices the band and rapes caska. A demon is a demon, if you consider it to be pure evil. However, the worse things Griffith does in the golden arc are due to his own humanity and his innability to deal with it. Maybe cause he thinks his goal is so noble that he sees himself as a demigod, just like his other "tools", and when he grasp his humanity, he feel very scared/angry or plain alien to it. Just like the scene in the river with caska when he scraches himself, with princess charlotte in bed, etc.
Again, I havent read the manga so I might be completely wrong. I'm just saying my thoughts from seeing the anime and some videos. I apologize if thats the case

My favorite aspect about Berserk, is how Guts' groupmates affect him. From Schierke, to Farnese, even to Isidro and Puck, they are all important in transitioning Guts from a rampaging delinquint with no hope to a genuinely good person. Without them, Guts would probably be a genuine psychopath or crazy lunatic by now, with all the light in his heart completely extinguished. Them together with Guts makes up the heart of Berserk if you ask me.

It was literally the first thing Griffith did before he had ascended to the god hand. Since sacrificing the band was at least partially done due to Griffiths' seething hatred for guts, I dont think he'd realized how little he cared until after he'd raped Casca. He was acting on the presumption that he was still his past self.

I dont think many people care too much about griffiths conquest and progress in berserk. The reason people read it is because they're interested in guts journey.
Here's an example for this point when guts left the band of the hawk were you more interested in what the band of the hawk was going to do next or where guts was going? I think most would say the later

When trying to explain what Berserk is, the closest western comparison I can think of is A Song of Ice and Fire.
Both long running, dark fantasy stories that are introduced as low fantasy and end up as high fantasy.
But the parallel between them that worries me is their release rate, but the conclusions when I examine them are polar.
I have accepted that GRRM will probably die before the end of the series, if not the next book, and with HBO's influence and the current cultural zeitgeist, I worry that the product in the end will be utter drivel.
With Mirua, I'm only worried that he might die before the story concludes, but whatever we get until whichever comes first, I have no doubt it will be anything less than amazing.

I really enjoyed reading berserk and every arc was really captivating for me. Seeing how much guts had grown from being barbaric to becoming more compassionate. The whole time reading after the golden age arc I found myself wanting to see guts just be happy, every time something seems to being going his way it ends up having some sort of horrific downside or repercussion for his action. That's what I find really intriguing the story isn't linear, him just to trying to get revenge, but contains many twists and turns.

Kinda disagree about the "guts is literally nothing to Griffith", Griffith even remembered Gut's "betryal" saying that guts of all people should understand why griffith did what he did.. He just moved on and left his humanity behind in favor of his dream, so he cant sympathize with anyone because he's above everyone. So yeah.. Guts is basically just a memory and a used stairstep after the eclipse.

I agree with the notion that Guts never meant anything to Griffith because it was only his pride he cared about and it showed at the end of golden age arc when Guts beat him and left. In my opinion Griffith couldn't handle being told no and shattered his already forming "god complex".
