    Outstanding review. To answer your question: I have a 2012 (991) c2s. That is exactly the configuration I like. I also have a Cayenne so I don't need 4 wheel drive. I live in Colorado, which is not convertible country. I suppose, money being no object, my dream 911 would be the GT-3 with pdk.

    RWD, Atlanta, I'm a purist and a GT3 is the best example of what a Porsche is. The AWD cars are great but for me a C2S, GTS, or any GT car are the ones for me.

    i really loved the 3.8L, revved so freely and had a proper H6 sound, so far from what i have heard its not as good but it does not sound terrible.

    Very good review!
    If I were to get one it'd be a 2WD manual Carrera S with sport package *and* the obligatory sport exhaust. But I won't because I just bought a 991.1 GTS (manual) and I know the NA 3.8l sounds so much better :)
    I think manual is a must have because these cars are so fast, rowing your gears is the only way to enjoy it and still keep your driver license (unless you track it)

    MotomanTV, thank you so much for your informative videos. It was watching your, and other people’s videos which helped me choose and spec my Porsche 911 Carrera. I went for the base model; more than quick enough for me. But I did go for the Sports Chrono package, which works exceptionally well aligned with the PDK. Living in South Africa, I went for the 2 wheel drive, as we never get the sort of winter weather that some others may expect. I love this car, it is everything and more than I expected. Just a huge pleasure to drive, either over a switchback mountain pass, or on a long run across the country. I can load lots into it (including 2 adults, with wheelchairs and luggage!), and drive 1000 miles in comfort.

    I would prefer the AWD since it allows you to drive it easier when the weather is not all that great, and I also like the slightly flared rear haunches you see on the 4, 4s and turbos. I don't have one yet, but perhaps in the future. I'm writing from Minnesota.

    2019 991.2 4 gts, pdk.
    Southeast USA.
    Older now, like some of the perks, but nit a fan of the 992 or RWS.
    991.2 is perfect blend of tech, quality, etc, for me. I like everything better about the last gen except power advantage, but that's easily obtained if desired.
    No plans to change.

    4 wheel drive would be a preferred choice for me but not for the reasons you would think. I have never owned a Porsche before. I live in NY, NY and most here get the 4 wheel drive since they drive it all season. I have another vehicle that handles bad weather so I WAS sold on getting a 2 wheel drive of the MKII until.... I saw a 4S. The 4S sports a different rear and I found I liked the design better than the one on the S. It's similar in some ways to the MKI's design, which I really liked. I wasn't planning on drifting around the corners in Manhattan anyways so I switched my order to a 4S. I suppose if I feel I'm missing out on anything I can always trade in!

    If I were to buy a Porsche 911 I would need to get the Carrera 4S Targa. With the 4WD I could use it all year round without worry about the weather or road conditions. With the Targa I would also get most of the benefit of a convertible and that stylish roll bar without the compromised rear visibility or road noise. For reference I'm 19 and live in the wonderfully snowy Michigan and while I personally have not owned a Porsche my father used to own a Boxster and a 991 Turbo that I was occasionally allowed to drive

    991Cs. 2 wheel drive more fun overall dynamic driving. 4 wheel drive adds weight, but not necessarily winterizes the car for Midwest winter. If awe does not convert car into daily driver in winter, (which it does not - unlike Turbo S) 2wd best bet. Summer of 2018 full redesign is worth waiting for, until then 991cs rocks onward.

    Austria: 2 wheel dirve. Why? A 911 has enough traction due to the engine beeing mounted in the back + because of the sophisticated electronics nowadays you don't really need four wheel drive to get you out of trouble. Spare the extra weight of the four wheel drive system...

  • @cambur7855

    I would prefer the 2WD because of the lighter weight, and agility induced in the back. I have owned a 2002 Boxster, 2010 Cayenne, 2014 Cayman, 2014 Cayenne and now currently driving the new 718 Cayman S and a 1991 911 Targa Carrera 2.

    If I were to get a Porsche, yes I would get this new .2 model. Give it pdk, leave the exhaust at that, get a dark Brown interior with wooden trim inserts, and the carbon gray, why more power, better dynamics etc, but I can't the roads here are spoilt to the extend that top speed would be 60kmph on a ford ranger, so on a 911 that is almost 32kmph, so I'll just enjoy the video, which is great. love the detail.

    First, your awesomeness is beyond compare - You and Tiff Needell would make for a pretty fun combination and an eventual revival of Fifth Gear. OK! I am about to embark on the first purchase that makes me want to get up in the night and do a little dance - A Manual 718 Cayman S - and I can't figure out if the Chrono Package is worth getting with the manual transmission given that most of the benefits are centered around the faster shifting on the PDK. Apologies for posting this question on the 911 review, but i figured 911 buyers might have the same question.

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  8 лет назад

      First off, thanks for the kind words . . . Second, let's put a pin in this conversation as I will - sadly - not be driving the 718 until September so don't have a real answer for you at this point . . . That said, keep in mind, the SportChrono package does include adjustable engine mounts which do improve stiffness and thus acceleration overall.

    • @JadRaouda
      @JadRaouda 8 лет назад

      ...the dynamic mounts do look like they're worth it. The rev matching might also help teach me how to heel and toe in other modes (which is one of the goals of this purchase) by getting me used to the sound. Now the question is 19" vs 20s...the Internet seems so divided! Thanks for the help! I should get my first ever Porsche (or car with more than 200 hp and less than 4 doors) in November and will chime in as soon as I have an educated opinion.

    Hi Motoman,
    i am havin a macan turbo.
    i would choose the 2 wheel drive simply because it is more fun and i live in Abu Dhabi where it rains twice a year.
    I have a Question: I Have been offered a 2017 carrera S and a 2016 GTS with aerokit for the same price(both with pdk). WHICH one should I pick? the turbo lag on my macan bothers me tiny bit especially when coming out of corners where it is noticable, and i am tending to go for the gts but i love the new steering wheel and the new features of the 2017 model. i usually keep my cars for 2 years. can you help me choosing the best one? thanks

    • @hsuhaochang
      @hsuhaochang 8 лет назад

      +Rachid Rezgui I just test drive a 2015 porsche carrera S and I was a little bit disappointing. Yes, it didn't have the turbo lag but you need to rev up to 4500rpm to get the real power out which isn't practical for daily use. I'd suggest you to try it out yourself since this drive dynamic preference is very personal. Good luck

    As I listened you explain the two different compressor wheel diameters, I wondered if someone bought a base Carrera, if they then changed the compressor from the S, would it then increase the kilowatts and torque?

  • @dougmaverick3287
    @dougmaverick3287 4 года назад

    I'm surprised as an experienced car reviewer you don't know that you don't slam the hood or trunk on Porsche sports cars because they're made of aluminum and they can bend easily.
    The proper technique is to bring the hood or trunk down until it touches the latch mechanism and then you push it down until you hear a click.

    I would get a RWD one just for the tail out fun. The 4 wheel drive is the more sensible option but these are normally second cars so your main car is the sensible one and this should be as much fun as possible.
    I am from the UK and I drive a Porsche 911 996.2 C2 which is a manual RWD with a 3.6l NA engine. I also have a BMW 5 series (F10) for my family/work car.

    • @dtschlack
      @dtschlack 4 года назад

      more sensible?

    • @noobymcnoobs
      @noobymcnoobs 4 года назад

      Donald Schlack yes I would say 4wd is the more sensible car as it sticks to the toad better in the wet and cold which is a sensible car to have but the 2wd model is a bit more of a handful and more likely to lose the back end and get a bit sideways. Sliding the back end of the car is less safe and slower but it’s fun. You can be safe and sensible or lairy ad more fun in a C2.

    From the UK, but living most of the year in Spain. I would definitely not go for any of these options, I would rather go for a Cayman GTS and tick all of the options. Except for the carbon buckets, they are not comfortable at all. Have driven the 991 and 991.2 and prefer the latter, but chassis vise, I would rather spend my money on a Cayman GTS, which have the best chassis of anything out there, just after the GT4. It's lighter, more nimble, fantastic steering rack, even though I wish Porsche would go back to hydraulic steering, and fantastic traction out of the corners. And that where I do believe there only one Porsche which is better, the 991.2 with awd and rear wheel steering. It shoots out of the corners, but sorry Porsche, I will still go for the Cayman GTS fully speced as it is a hell of a lot of car and fun for the money.

    I like to track the car from time to time and I find the C4S to be cheating. So living in a non snowy climate (for the most part) and driving this as a weekend car, I would buy the C2S (currently own a 997.2 C2S). IF, I had to contend with snow and this was "must drive" daily driver, it would be the C4S.

  • @TheWetdog2

    I would prefer all wheel drive for the basic reason that i live in CT, it snows, i would want to still drive the car! if it was rear wheel drive I would never be able to keep the car straight in the snow at least not with that much torque. Also you mentioned the rear wheel drive is faster by 2/10 of a millisecond. I have not owned a Porsche, but I have a GTI which is very similar contrary to some belief.

    Love the Graphite Metallic & the wheels combination… The white\grey interior ruins it though.
    Hat's off to Porsche, they put a lot of work & effort into the .2 series.
    I got surprised at first when you said they made PASM a standard option & started to doubt everything in my life…. Porsche made a previously-expensive-option a standard feature! I was like wo! Porsche is being suspiciously generous (especially in light of a current "predicament") … but then you said, "Optional Suspension" & everything was whole again lol
    I agree regarding the grille, not a fan.
    Too bad its lightly spec'd, I was hoping for season 6's first Options Game!
    My pick would be the 4S in the same color & dubs as this one, but with a panoramic roof & a completely different interior.
    (& then swap out the rear bumper for new Turbo S')
    I went with a '4' because I love the flared fenders & widened rear (insert Sir Mix A Lot song here)
    The reason I'd go for a Coupe with a panoramic roof instead of the magnificent Targa is because the fabric roof doesn't handle the weather elements very well. Remember that blue Boxter with a red top I sent you photos of last year? I saw it again last week when I was home & that roof was filled with stains, dirt & whatnot …. My OCD kicked in immediately.
    As always, excellent work M! And I love the location, reminds me of NFS : Hot Pursuit II, I miss that game.

    So the trees talk huh? I remember my first bong hit. I'd like the Carrera 2S please. Manual, sports package. The software tune/boost increases by just handing over your key fob to right tech/tuner are going to be amazing. Some are already stating the base 991.2 Carrera (non S) is "quicker" than the 991.1 S. I'm still not convinced on the sound differences between the NA and new turbos. BUT, turbos and eventually turbo hybrids are going to be the norm one day even in a plain old Toyota Camry...

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon 8 лет назад

      +Elie Nehme AWD isn't going to help you out of a situation anymore than looking further ahead when you are actually driving. AWD on sports cars really show their use when it comes to rain, snow and ice (and ascending hill climbs). Poor road surface conditions require you to simple plan in advanced, placing the car on a better piece of tarmac than you otherwise would.

    • @theresonly1truth138
      @theresonly1truth138 8 лет назад +1

      Rogue Qall thx for the reply, it makes sense, but awd i safer when it comes to avoiding crashes in a poor driving conditions. i know this from driving my STI ( no electronic stability control ) anyway, i am sure that the new tech. systems can outperform my car's stability even if it's a RWD. so a 911 2wd carrera is safer to drive than my Sti, but it needs time for me to acknowledge that there is little difference between the awd and rwd these days due to the active clever intervention of the systems.

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon 8 лет назад

      Elie Nehme I can't argue with that. And yes, I agree any possibility for more stability in compromised driving conditions is ALWAYS welcome. The Carrera 4S is a VERY capable car with easy performance though. Nice STi btw, I've got a soft pot for the station wagon version of the car in your pic xD

    Which Porsche I would choose. I chose Nissan GTR. I actually sold 911 turbo 997.1 6-sp manual (I use to have 996 turbo 6-sp manual too).
    I tried 911 Carrera S (991.1) and was disappointed how anemic it was, compared to 996 turbo and 997.1 turbo. Than I test drove Nissan GTR and I was shocked how fast that car was. A friend of mine who has Porsche 911 turbo 997.2 with double clutch agreed that GTR is faster than his turbo.
    Honestly for 100k+ you can buy much better cars than 911 Carrera S

      @@dtschlack I completely agree with you. That is why I traded my Nissan GTR for MB AMG GTR. When you reach some performance level it is not about speed any more.

    I'll play along... 2wd coupe, Atlanta area and presently own a MY98 911 (993) C2S coupe having ordered/spec'd new back in the day.... My wife drives the newer machines from a Boxster S, a 997.2 coupe and more recently the newer MY15 Boxster S w/PDK....The 2wd with manual gearbox 911 coupe expresses an old sckool dynamic character more so,,, than the slightly heavier 4wd PDK equipped cars.... My $.02......,,, P.S. ,,, I too like the Targa body style and in a Porsche dream world speak,, a 993 Targa would be the bomb! The 991.2 Targa appears ever-so-slightly bulky .....? No?

    Great quick update on this new Porsche! Thanks..
    I have had Porsche for 20years now. From a 996 till 997 CarreraS, and currently own GT3RS and a CayenneS. I'd regret not buying the 993 on the lot when I purchased my first 996. The water cooled motor was the latest new tech at the time. And now, I am holding on to my 997.2 GT3RS. Not keen on the new 991.1 and the 2 gen is just getting too big. Most importantly to me, I want to able to see the engine of the car not just seeing couple cooling fans under a cover lid. So, if for me to choose. I would take the two wheel drive system. Stick to the core Porsche design. Four wheel drive is just to sure footed, it takes the fun out of the thrills. Still remember the 993 was a fun car to drive. The rear can get out of line easily. Steering wheel set close to the Windsheild. I really like the 993 design and my 997.2 RS is the modern design water cooled motor of the 993. Porsche had lost me as a fan from 991 model.

    Carrera S, 2 wheel drive Cabriolet with PDK & sport exhaust. Not too far away from what I've got but wouldn't drive it in the winter anyway and I'm really old having shifted semis all my life and clutches are expensive wear item. (Personally it's not a sports car in my experience it it has a top but that is clearly just me.)

      You have to be there and tilt the seat way back, looking up into them (no top) and listen. Then you will/ or won't, understand.

    What I don't understand: The base + S already have turbos and they fit in the targa - but for 911 turbo, the lack of a targa version is supposedly explained due to space constraints / the turbos not fitting in the targa ! Do you believe that? Has anybody come across a better / the proper explanation as to why there is no targa turbo?

    Awesome review. I've been trying to decide on a 991 or 991.2 and on the AWD vs RWD, so this is a great help. I think the AWD is better because it's not just AWD to shorten the turning radius at low speeds, it also turns the wheels the same direction at high speeds. Kinda makes it even more fun, I think.
