The 991.2 is still the best modern 911 you can buy over the 992. The build quality, design, and higher quality materials are better in the 991.2 than a similar spec 992. I sold my 992 and went back to a 991.2 and that is saying a lot.
Another great review. A perfect combination of useful facts and informed opinion. Once again, Thomas demonstrates how a RUclips car review should be done.
This was the review that made me buy my first Porsche in 2017. It was exactly the same car…a 991.2 Carrera 4S Cabriole but with the performance pack from Porsche the so called Werksleistungssteigerung with 450PS…a GTS engine in a Carrera S…midnight blue metallic and the chalk/blue interior…loved it❤
Easily the best 911 review I have seen and certainly the most detailed. I’m a huge 911 fan so I watch a lot of reviews and wish I could afford one. I have had both a 986 & a 987s Boxster both of which I loved but just not a 911.
I'm usually no fan of 911s (I prefer more radical design changes) , but the new details make the exterior a lot nicer. The roof closed looks really well designed as well. And as always, best reviews on RUclips!
I have been looking forward to this review since you told me about it :P I love the 4S, especially the cabriolet, and I think this generation of 911s look amazing. You can definitely tell it's turbocharged from the sound, especially on the drive by's. However the biggest put off, just like every Porsche ever made, is the options list. Like you said, a 130,000 euro car not having a rear view camera is ridiculous, and I remember when my grandparents were getting theirs specked up, Porsche wanted a few thousand pounds for red stitching in the seats back in 2007! However other than that, they are great cars and so was this review :P
Loved the review, especially your reaction in the tunnel. I think in normal mode the exhaust sound does not need to be loud. It's about fast but comfortable driving.
+Autogefühl Great timing. The yellow is nice, but I'm with you on the blue. Except, I'd get the darker shade. Love your bag and "smaller people" comment. I don't even think you could safely put a 6 year old back there. For those traveling across Europe or just Germany, are there places to rent a 911?
A very objective and well rounded review Thomas. Well done. It's far from the first one I've read but the first I'll comment on. Some comments in response to your questions and a few other points :- - The Spyder wheels do look good but are a bit too "busy" and would be a pain to clean; I prefer to the standard Carrera S wheels, the optional satin platinum finish would be a good match for this yellow Cab. - Yes I like the Sport Design wing mirrors too, probably an option I would tick even though they are £365 in the UK - 03:54 I might have misunderstood you, but unless you select the sports exhaust option, the exhausts are not central; they are at the outside, left and right similar to the 991.1. The standard Carrera and CS are slightly different but neither are central. - 17:40 PDCC is more than damper setting; it's an active system that keeps the car flatter while cornering. Standard on the Turbo S, optional now on the Carrera S. I'd be interested to hear if you felt any difference on the road. I've tried it on the track and it works well, but not sure if road speeds would justify the high cost, as it has to be ordered with the rear axle steering. - Throttle Blipping comes with the Sport Chrono Pack; nice feature for sure but must be relatively low cost to Porsche - it should be standard in my opinion, or at least a low cost option outside of the SC package. As for the yellow, it would not be my choice but I have to say it sort of works and I like the matching seat belts. Ignoring the infotainment systems, for pure driving pleasure, how does this 991.2 compare with the white Carrera GTS convertible you tested last year I think; which one would you choose for a Sunday afternoon blast? Regards.
I agree, the loud car thing is obnoxious, not exciting to me at all. The car is enough without all that noise. I don't understand why people think that is great. It's just noise. That is one of the things I like about Porsches is that you have the power and luxury without all that noise.
"silently and comfortably" are not words I would like to connect with a Porsche 911 ;) Apart from I would prefer coupe instead, everything looks awesome on this car but sound. The N/A sound was so much better!
Don't really think that anybody will complain about the sound after watching this. :) As for the consumption of the engine, if you push it it eats even more, but I think for a calm ride, it eats less than before.
Just a correction on minute 3:52 to 3:59. The Exhaust is centered ONLY in the cars that have PSE. You can have a S without PSE and the exhaust would be located on the sides not in the center. Regards.
No problem! By the way, during the video you said the car was a little quiter (which is normal since it´s turbocharged) but with the PSE Activated it really makes a diference. DId you had the PSE activated (by pressing the the button)? For some stupid reason, Porsche decided that you have to toutch the button so that the PSE is active. Everytime you turn off the ignition, so does the PSE. Regards. Glad i could help.
+Paulo Rangel yes indeed. YOu either hit the button or with Sport mode, it gets active automatically. In the sound check part, I first had the button off, then on. All driving scenes from the outside always on.
Great review Thomas. One tip, when you mentioned that other new colour (the blue you liked) you should show a pic of that colour so everyone can see without having to click somewhere else to see it.
@zaphod2 Please check your google+ message settings, cant directly respond! Answer here: If you drive at same performance output, the new engine consumes less. But that wont happen. More power means more consumption, and you will drive that car at higher performance even if you dont intend to :) Rear axle: no not in this very car
Tomas, very nice review. If I could just suggest some small improvements: 1. We say "what it will look like" not "how..." 2. Nobody says AWD as individual letters because it is actually longer than saying "all wheel drive", 3. You say "litre" as "litter" - it should be as if it was written "leeter". Good luck with your next reviews, I'm waiting for the Giulia:)
Don't understand the people who complain that with the new turbochargers Porsche has spoiled the beautiful and authentic exhaust note of the 911 :D First of all, boxer engines have never sounded really great. Secondly - as I could tell from the review, the engine actually sounds amazingly!
the boxter/cayman 3.4 flat 6 from the carrera sounds amazing every reviewer say the same thing, drive one with active exhaust and you'll see what people are talking about.
Great review Thomas ! As a Porsche ( and Autogefuhl fanatic ! ) , I was excited to hear your impression of the new turbo charged engine. Sounds like lots of torque wherever and whenever you want it. Still curious if you detected any turbo lag , however. Love the new infotainment display. Looks sleek and modern. Having owned 3 Porsches , currently a Cayman GTS and a Macan S, I can say that driving these vehicles is the highlight of my day. Perhaps there is a Carrera S cabrio in my future now ! Keep the amazing reviews coming !
Hello Thomas! I'm a yank/cowboy from the U.S. west. Love your "eye" for the vehicles you review. Is it possible to see the BMW 440 convertible w/x-drive! Saw your convertible of the 4 series, but we don't get the options of "large" diesels! Regardless, really enjoy your reviews!
Thomas, not all the exhausts are central. That is the optional sports exhaust. Otherwise it's two pipes for the Carrera and four for the S, but split to the outside like the 991.1.
+Autogefühl Thomas, Of this, am certain. Even checked on Porsche.de to see if there was a different standard for Germany. The center exhaust is an option on the Carerra, Carerra S and even the Carerra 4S. It SHOULD be standard but in the tradition of Porsche charging you for everything, it is not, sadly. :-)
I think when it comes to sound, enthusiasts still want to hear the engine. In a perfect world, the comfort setting in this car would be as it is but it would in the 'wild' setting would become nice and loud (which I guess this car accomplishes). A setting in between wouldn't hurt either. Personally, I don't feel the loud setting in a lot of these cars with adjustable exhaust modes is loud enough.
Tomas excellent review, dialogue and the right amount of details. Very much enjoyed. I own a 997 4S Cabrio and love it- your thoughts on PSM, Sport Plus are similar to mine. The only thing I wish mine was yellow! though Miami blue is a hot color too.

Thomas, do the review of the new ford focus with 1.5 litre diesel engine. And the new fiat 500x and it can be interesting to compare it with his brother jeep renegade. Think about it.
How is the Turbo consuming more ? I know it can consume more than a n/a engine, but when you don`t drive too hard it should be more efficient. Concerning the color, nice to see it in the review, but i wouldn`t want to look at yellow daily if it was my car. Also, did the test car have rear axle steering ?
Sir i forgot to ask you do all the Carrera S Models have wider back wings on them ? Like on the GTS model please let me know. Kind regards Harry. PS Thomas i like the White & Carman Red colours.
Surprisingly, that is combined with All Wheel Drive. All AWD models have 44 mm wider rear bumbers plus the connecting LED strip between the tail lights
I really dont like the hunchback that forms when you remove the roof of the 911. If i wanted a convertible 911, i'd go for the Targa. It looks 100 times better and more special if you ask me.
But it's much heavier and pricier :( I have to say though the yellow Targa 4 GTS is disgusting. As for the "bump" I absolutely love it. If I could keep it roof down forever I would ahah
Besten Dank!
I have a question, can you lower the seat back? like to take a nap or sleep in the car. I can imagine that in the 718 Boxster can't be done because of the little space.
i love your reviews so much, and your general thoughts on leather vs alcantara. i have a question though, if they gave u a choise would you take the old engine with the face lift or the one u drove with turbo? i mean i know eco turbo engines are the future but when you spend this kinda money on an exotic car like this do you miss the screaming exhaust?
i see, btw i really would like you to do a special porsche episode about options and accesories, im a big porsche fan cuz its the most drivable most practicle and most beautiful almost super/ sports car :)
Great review Thomas, thanks as always. Question, if your coming off SL R231, how would one find the seats (sport or sport plus) as well as comfort mode? Older 911 were always too stiff. Is this one more tolerable? Thanks!
So, after having reviewed the 911 convertible and the latest Boxster, what's your conclusion on how they compare? You already mentioned agility, wind features and performance, but my question would be: Is the 911 Convertible (in your opinion) worth the price tag, given that the Boxster already offers a lot for a lot less money?
hey, check out different Mercedes convertibles in our search: ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=mercedes+convertible+autogefuehl I would rather recommend a C-Class or E-Class convertible.
That's a shame really. I do agree with ur opinion on animal skin seats. Why do they do it? I think alcantara seats are the best u can buy nowadays. Hope Porsche will listen the customers.
I've always thought the rear seat area should be modified to eliminate the seats and provide additional storage instead. I'm surprised over time that Porsche hasn't done this; they're absolutely useless as seats. On a different note, it looks like you're in Leipzig, Germany!
Interesting to me that there are far fewer criticisms of the sound here relative to the 718, when in fact, to my ear having driven all back to back, they sound quite similar. Oh, but of course, only 4 cylinders in the 718; blah blah blah blah meaningless dribble.
the 991.2 sounds WAY better than the 718 Boxter/Caymans, even though they've all switched to turbos. I think this is Porsche's evil plan to get everyone to buy the more expensive model.
Warum haben die Designer bloß die "Hecklamellen" jetzt bloß vertikal gesetzt und aus schwarzem Plastik? Das sieht im Vergleich zu den früheren horizontalen Lamellen in der Farbe des Wagens scheisse aus.
I really like porsche but i dont like the interieur design of the car. The audi tt and new models have a better design of the interieur. of course the mission e from porsche was really beautifull. Same that they thit not put it in the new 911 or boxter.
Beautiful car. but for me a yellow car = NY Cab! i probably will never be able to afford one but just in case i will order the microfiber! no animal should be harmed, even for a Porsche!
The 991.2 is still the best modern 911 you can buy over the 992. The build quality, design, and higher quality materials are better in the 991.2 than a similar spec 992. I sold my 992 and went back to a 991.2 and that is saying a lot.
Love my 2019 991.2 4 gts coupe! No plans to change. Perfect fit for my tastes!!!
Another great review. A perfect combination of useful facts and informed opinion. Once again, Thomas demonstrates how a RUclips car review should be done.
+Ralph Drury way to go Ralph!
The engineering and design in Stuttgart is something to praise really , how is it that they can keen upgrading such a rounded car . Incredible !

Just a correction on minute 3:52 to 3:59. The Exhaust is centered ONLY in the cars that have PSE. You can have a S without PSE and the exhaust would be located on the sides not in the center. Regards.
+Paulo Rangel thanks! I've read that they changed that for the facelift for every model, must be wrong info then

Answer here: If you drive at same performance output, the new engine consumes less. But that wont happen. More power means more consumption, and you will drive that car at higher performance even if you dont intend to :)
Rear axle: no not in this very car
If you meant rear axle steering: for Gen. 2, you can't get PDCC without rear steering, so this car has PDCC and RAS.
Tomas, very nice review. If I could just suggest some small improvements: 1. We say "what it will look like" not "how..." 2. Thomas, do the review of the new ford focus with 1.5 litre diesel engine. And the new fiat 500x and it can be interesting to compare it with his brother jeep renegade. Think about it.
+drugari23 ok noting that on the list!
I think it's a bit weird to write 4/4 and 2/4 on the fuel gauge. 0, 1/2 and 1 would be maybe better?
How is the Turbo consuming more ? I know it can consume more than a n/a engine, but when you don`t drive too hard it should be more efficient.

you can flip the rear bench down to better put bags on it that you dont damage the seats
Very nice.
Race yellow... Best 911 colour IMHO... 👍

hey m8, most important is to go for base seats and not pick the sportier ones! Also try to go for the alcantara ones
Autogefühl thanks! So you say base seats and comfort mode in these newer models are not a big difference from SL, correct?
As close as it gets. A Mercedes SL will always be more comfortable.
Autogefühl you are the best, thanks
So, after having reviewed the 911 convertible and the latest Boxster, what's your conclusion on how they compare? You already mentioned agility, wind features and performance, but my question would be: Is the 911 Convertible (in your opinion) worth the price tag, given that the Boxster already offers a lot for a lot less money?
+Michael Gross hmmmm good question - think we need an extra video for that :)
Hi i am in btw getting the s550 convertible mercedes or 911 convertible (i know 2 totally differente style...) what wd you recomend me?
hey, check out different Mercedes convertibles in our search:
ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=mercedes+convertible+autogefuehl
I would rather recommend a C-Class or E-Class convertible.
Autogefühl no way why?? The S seems amazing with all the new features more luxury and tech than the bentley...
Is this everyday car Thomas?
hmm... theoretically possible, but not really..
So better choice would be Panamera for everyday driving?
Rather a Macan basis version. The Panamera is a no-go at the moment as it is only offered with animal skin seats
That's a shame really. I do agree with ur opinion on animal skin seats. Why do they do it? I think alcantara seats are the best u can buy nowadays.
Hope Porsche will listen the customers.
Anyone knows the code name of the wheels on this one?
Cooler Typ.
✌️😎
I've always thought the rear seat area should be modified to eliminate the seats and provide additional storage instead. I'm surprised over time that Porsche hasn't done this; they're absolutely useless as seats. On a different note, it looks like you're in Leipzig, Germany!
Good colour but I'd have Gentian Blue...😊
Do u know anything about the 991.2 GTS?
+dizzytdh gts versions are usually coming 1-2 years after new initial releases
+Autogefühl look that page got the paper for the GTS 2017 www.carscoops.com/2016/04/confirmed-2017-porsche-911-gts-facelift.html?m=1
"Someone obviously drove with this car 255km/h. I did not. I would never do that." LOL, if I got a Porsche press car I definitely would.
and that's why they trust us :)
I'll take a Carrera S coupe over this any day
K Uddin well some people like convertiblrs
fantastisch
+World Traveler东北 thx =)
Interesting to me that there are far fewer criticisms of the sound here relative to the 718, when in fact, to my ear having driven all back to back, they sound quite similar. Oh, but of course, only 4 cylinders in the 718; blah blah blah blah meaningless dribble.
the 991.2 sounds WAY better than the 718 Boxter/Caymans, even though they've all switched to turbos. I think this is Porsche's evil plan to get everyone to buy the more expensive model.
the only thing keeping me from really loving this machine is that it doesn't look like a human can fit in the backseat, what is it there for??
golf clubs. tiny dogs. rich guy stuff.
This yellow is not attractive. Porsche should change to a pastel yellow like a 65 vette
Beautiful car. but for me a yellow car = NY Cab! i probably will never be able to afford one but just in case i will order the microfiber! no animal should be harmed, even for a Porsche!
The USA version the KEY dont open the top 😡
+dizzytdh uh, safety regulation?
+Autogefühl i dont know ! I just test drive the 991.2 cab and the key dont have the buttom for the top like u got 😢
+dizzytdh: There is no extra button to open the top with the key. Just hit 'n hold the open button. Vice versa to close.
+Patrick Ickxs is no open buttom like ur key is just 3 buttom lock/unlock/trunk
+Patrick Ickxs ur got 4 buttom ..USA only 3
I've never like the looks of Porsche 911 cabriolet, they just look a bit strange.
you are a good looking guy.
thanks you! :)
Drive in essen :-)
