  • Eight seats per row, on a Boeing 767! That's not normal, seven seats would be normal. That was just the first clue as to what an awful product Ukraine International offers...but at least they're cheap!

    Now this is literally a war zone... So weird... air travel kind of represents the pinnacle of modern, advanced and civil society, the opposite of war and conflict... so to see a place that was previously covered in a casual tripreport with the usual modern airport buildings, lounges, talk about airplanes suddenly in the mids of a war zone is truly impactful...

      I've always said this too. In fact I openly scoff at the lofty claims of "Unity & Brotherhood" bandied about before & during the Olympic games; air travel is the _real_ unity, not a hypercommercialised quad-yearly exercise in soundbytes

      @@Daryanplays That's the point, you do realise? OP says "this is now," drawing the contrast between the peaceful times and the now, the modern world following the invasion. The point is to highlight that difference. And it really is something that highlights the impact and gravitas of airspace, of war and the necessity of peace (albeit slight exaggerated in my comment)

    Your plane’s had quite the history. It first flew for Royal Brunei registered V8-RBF with 23 business class and 182 economy. It was leased to Vietnam airlines in 1996 and returned in 1998. It was sold to the now-defunct AeroSvit and registered UR-AAI with no cabin changes. When Aerosvit went bankrupt in 2013 UIA bought it and then reconfigured and reregistered it to the current config.

  • @ZurichAirportSpotter
    @ZurichAirportSpotter 6 лет назад +79

    Very intersting trip report of this rather old-school way of air travel. The food looked quite nice though. I'm sure they're going to introduce a new cabin with the 777 next year.
    I just compared UIA prices on the route to Beijing with other european carriers, it appears to be one of the cheapest. Do you guys know the phrase "you get what you pay for"? Take your tablet with you and you've got enough entertainment. UIA will receive their first 777-200ER with new cabin soon, so it doesn't make sence to refit the old cabin for a few years as it's very expensive to do so. Apart from the missing personal IFE, UIA seems to offer a solid product nonetheless. If you want to fly cheap with all inclusive, go ahead an fly with subsidized gulf carriers like Emirates etc. But keep in mind that not all airlines got this method of finance to their advantage.

    • @simply_aviation
      @simply_aviation  6 лет назад +10

      +ZurichAirportSpotter Agree with all of it except the last two sentences, but that's another story. We always bring our own entertainment and in the video we didn't complain about the missing IFE. We merely pointed out that there is no IFE and that this is unusual nowadays, which is both true...

    • @ZurichAirportSpotter
      @ZurichAirportSpotter 6 лет назад +8

      Simply Aviation Don't get me wrong, I wasn't pointing at you and your notice about the IFE, but at the many comments below complaining about the dated cabin (probably wasn't clear enough from my side). It kind of annoys me how people expect best quality at low fares, this is an equation without solution imo. Well, regarding EK etc. we obviously have different oppinions, now you made me currious how your argumentation on that is ;)

    • @user-ee3jc7nl6g
      @user-ee3jc7nl6g 6 лет назад +1

      ZurichAirportSpotter UIA is going to get the 777-200ER, but they will leave 767-300ER for other long-haul flights (Toronto, Colombo, Delhi). So it will be better to refit the cabin, but your words about the price/service factor are right.

    I flew on UIA's 767 from JFK to KBP. Very outdated cabin. As seen in this video, the overhead bins are also really small. The crew had to pile handbags atop one another in the back galley during take off as there was no room for them in the overhead bins. The seats are extremely narrow. So much so that the thighs of my roommate we're touching mine (we were both average hight and weight). Also as mentioned in this video, there was very poor entertainment with the same 3 movies playing on a loop. With no map showing the progress of the flight, it felt endless. Although the service was quite average, it's an airlines equipment that makes or breaks a product. I'm really looking forward to UIAs 777s and I hope this will bring great improvement to the airline.

    Prices in € instead of ₴ is for purpose: most airline passengers are Ukrainians, and when they pay with their usual hryvnia bank cards, UIA's partner bank uses special conversion rate, up to 1.5 times higher than official one.
    UIA basically suck, they have constant problems with overbooking, shitty tariffs and the service is minus three out of ten.
    If you'll ever be back in Ukraine, try Motor Sich airlines. They use 40 year old soviet planes and this is not a luxury service, but a great attraction, and the plane itself is in-flight entertainment :D Flying those beasts is really exciting lol. And their prices are lower than UIA's and they actually do have some sort of service.

    Interesting trip report.. While IFE is important, more and more pax only use their tablets to watch saved content during a flight. Still IFE gives me a chance to enjoy a couple of recently released movies during a lh flight. I wouldn't mind trying UIA, for bargain bucket fare, Inc in business (business section was also rather dated)

    If you’ve ever took a train in Ukraine then it’s pretty normal to have one huge tv for everyone to watch instead of your own personal screen. So it doesn’t surprise me to see the same sort of get-up in their planes as well. Most Ukrainians sleep so in-flight entertainment isn’t a big deal. As long as they feed you, give you drinks then it keeps them happy. My wife traveled to Canada with me and she didn’t bother with the movies or tv shows even though she had her own screen. She was just enjoying the flight even though it was 10 hours from Vienna to Toronto. I couldn’t live without inflight entertainment even though most times I play my Nintendo switch or 3DS but if there’s a few movies I never seen then it’s nice to have at least the option. My wife wanted to take the direct flight from borispol to Toronto non-stop but knowing that the flight may have not had inflight entertainment made me choose otherwise. I love Ukraine though. Totally awesome place.
