I used to take 1mg a day for 2 years. It stabilizes and helped my hair loss but had some side effects (low libido/watery semen), then I found their videos and upon watching, I tried taking it 3 times per week. Same results and lower my side effects. In 2021, I started to take 1 mg once a week, just to minimize all the side effects, and it works just fine. Same results, less side effects. I now take 1mg once a week.

After about 19 year of 1 MG a day, I dropped to 1 MG Monday, Wednesday and Friday about 6 months ago and have not experienced any changes in my hair. Side effects stopped after about a week after I started 19 years ago. Wish I would have heard of a possible MWF routine years ago. Over 69 years old now and hair is great.

@@mateowhitley9880 As soon as I saw the video that said 3 times a week was enough to prevent hair loss, I stopped the daily dosing. No gradual transition. Its worked for me. No hair loss. Think this is one of the better youtube channels regarding finasteride. So many youtibers talking about it giving the wrong information. People with no real knowledge of the product. Thanks for the information has helped me so much. Also think the way you are prescribing the tablet is so much better and looking at the actual person needs instead of just saying her you go. Definately a good channel.

I do around 0.8 to 1.2mg per day. I buy the medicine Proscar, which is made of finasteride. The reason it is called Proscar is because it is made for prostate problems and has therefore a higher dosage - one pill is 5mg. But what I do is I cut one pill in 4 pieces. As a result a bit of the medicine is lost in small crumbles, but I also get 4 pieces of finasteride which are individually around 1mg. Why do I do this? Because it's way cheaper. It costs me 3 euros per month. If only I had started 5 years ago... now I could've avoided my hair transplant and all that money and emotional trauma.
I think this was my biggest mistake I made when back in 1999 I went on 1.25mg a day and definitely caused many side effects but I was scared to stop because I didn't want to loose hair. I think the problem is that everyone starts on 1mg and probably in most cases is not necessarily by the research we are finding out these days. Everyone thinks more is better and it's not always the case. Little and often is better than to much in a short time. If you over fertiliser your lawn at home you will burn it, but little and often will always give better results in Grass.
@@kylekeenan3485 things have changed with finastride dosages over the years. I’ve been having good results with 0.25mg/day. I also use minox once a day and microneedle every 7-10 days but it’s good so far. Posting monthly updates.
How can you recommend off label dosing (3x per week) when the original propecia study was done at 1mg daily? How are you able to say that the level of DHT has been adequately reduced at the follicle? You can't measure that right? So how do you measure the hair stabilization in your patient?
I'm also curious about this. I know there is one study indicating that 0.2 mg daily or 0.5 mg every other day may be almost as effective as 1 mg daily, but that's just one study.
You need to do a video on body hair transplants and how effective they are, especially with someone with retrograde alopecia and with a significant amount of body hair
started off like a banshee at 1 mg per day-- way too much[ im 62] groggy, lethargic, water retention , messing with hormones. now im 0.5 every 2nd day-- 2 mg's- ish per week... way easier on the system he's right you don't NEED 1mg a day , it stays in the tissue for 30 days.
Today I have just started taking Fin 3mg in week and i was already using minoxidil for 6 months. I must say minoxidil doesn't stop the hairloss as i noticed but rather it stimulate the old hairs to grow thicker. Still my hair falls everytime i wash my hair and apply mino onto scalp. So, am hoping finastride will work well. Hope i don't get any side effects 🤞
@@LUIS7SUAREZ71 Right now its almost 1 month on fin and I take 4 times a week. For now I have more shedding almost 50 hair a day and i guess its due to finastride. Hoping for best results
Could you do a video addressing hair transplants and skin/scalp conditions such as psoriasis/excema/dermatitis etc. Would love hear your expert opinion on the matter. Excellent channel and content btw 👍🏻
What i’ve notice being on fin for 4 and a half months was still shedding and no improvement in the front region. I was so worried about this. But I have been taking 0.25mlg a day which is only 1.75mlg a week. I am now gonna try the 3mlg a week dose and see how that goes!
Initially you might shed hair rapidly as the hair follicle goes thru its cycle however the newer hair will grow and take it's place and will be thicker and darker. Same thing happens with minoxidil when you first take it
My understanding is, finas usually doesn't help much with the front; but it's most helpful on the crown. I'm a few months in, 0.5mg per day and the crown is getting fuller. The front is not noticeable yet. Oh, and no shedding for me. 🤷
Great video. I've taken as little as 1mg every 4 days and while my hair loss stabilizes, I still start to experience side effects (chest swelling) after about six months. I'm going to try just 1mg once a week and see how I do. Finasteride is a pretty strong drug (long half-life in the skin).

Hey Doctors, Been following you guys for a while now and enjoying all the valuable content. Could you possibly cover the topic of thyroid hormone production in relation to androgenic alopecia? From what I know it is currently a debated topic. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and also suffer from male pattern baldness. A low functioning thyroid causes a low amount of progesterone. Progesterone blocks DHT production just as finasteride does. Is it possible that a lack of natural progesterone in men due to low functioning thyroid could cause the exacerbation of male pattern baldness especially in young men? Thanks!
@@smartpoint604 If you suspect hair loss, see a doctor and get a finasteride subscription. The earlier you start treatment the earlier you halt further follicle miniaturization (har loss).
The point here would be how a patient evaluates if his alopecy is stabilized or not. Here in Germany i have no specialist in my town amd it is hard to evaluate it before it is "too late". I am thinking about people like me which has been taking finasteride for 4-5 years and maybe is one of this 36% to whom finasteride is not enough to stabilize his alopecy.
How did you get the finasteride without a prescription? Maybe take the plunge and go see a specialist in the closest town if possible and then maybe in 6 months see him/her again and then do online sessions instead once they know your situation

You guys are a godsend. I'm gobbling up your vids here. I'm a middle aged guy with Norwood 2, so holding in there pretty good naturally. I figure if it's taken this long to wear the follicles down, they can't be that sensitive to DHT. So considering testosterone declines as we age, and I'm doin fairly well naturally, what are your thoughts on taking 0.5mg once per week? And providing there's a positive response, cycling off fin until hair suggests slight miniturisation again and then going back on it?
0.5mg per week is like taking nothing at all. 🤣 Why even bother at that point? 🤣 That's like pissing in the ocean; not enough to make any difference. 🤣
@@Asiansxsymbol hence the question 😂. With diminishing returns, 0.5 is essentially as potent as 1mg and lasts in the skin for 3 - 4 days, which I'd say is still a significant reduction. Still I'll look into topical, thanks
@@machietheapachie7214 I've seen many people on the comment sections saying that by taking 0,5mg only once a week has been beneficial. Altough the half life of Finasteride is quite short (only 4 to 7 hours) it still remains active in the skin TISSUE for around 3 to 5 days. This is exactly as you suggested. I think this is why taking a low dose once or twice a week can bring benefits to many people.
@@rollingstart_90s thanks for confirming that. Still trying to get my head around it as it seems to be all or nothing within the community, but it seems to me that ironically the best candidates are those who don't really need it. I think of a boat with a hole analogy. The hole (dht receptor) can be small or big (insensitive/sensitive) and few or many, with the amount of water (dht) coming in varying person to person, and with a person (tolerance/nutrition/health) onboard with a bucket dishing it back out. We can presume that every man is losing his hair, whether obvious or not, so the question is not IF you lose it but WHEN regarding the rate of loss. As such, considering the strength of fin, I'd imaging that someone holding ground into middle age without aid should respond very well to it, even at once per week as even that should allow the man in the boat to tip the scales in favour of growth (hair cycles to reverse to original strength). Then again, I could be talking out my hole lol
Just got my prescription. I’m 30 years old and I opted to go with the Hims chew blend. Each tablet has both 1.1mg finasteride, 3mg of minoxidil and 3mg biotin. I plan on starting with only twice per week and see how that goes for a year. I will have more than enough biotin based on recommended dosage, but I will also use minoxidil foam on my days off. But 2.2 of finasteride per week seems like a fair start. I really don’t want to exceed 3.3 per week considering I plan to take this for life. I just hope 2mg is enough.
Have started taking finastride 1mg every day for the past 4 months and I had 0 side effects so far. Hair shedding stabilized after 1st week. I'm now in my 2nd week where I cut down to 1mg every 2 days, haven't noticed any difference whatsoever.
I’m a 50 year old bodybuilder who has been on weekly injections of 300mg of testosterone enanthate since 2012. I still have a good amount of hair. Would taking finesteride while on my dose of test cause any issues with my hair. The goal, of course, is to keep what I have but I’m reading conflicting reports of taking finesteride with test….some saying it’s perfectly fine, others saying it may actually accelerate hair loss?

Couple reasons...1mg lowers DHT more on a single day than 0.5mg does, the uniformity of the pill being split, and the cumulative effect of taking it more times a week
1] Dose response (self-explanatory and if it isn't you must do more of your own research to understand this concept) & 2] convenience (always knowing it's exactly 1mg vs 0.5mg where when you cut can never be 100% precise that you cut into two perfectly 0.5mg pieces it's probably 0.53 one time and 0.47 the other etc over time that becomes inconsistent dosing which no doctor would support vs knowing exact dosing every time)
As i understand, finestride has a cumulative effect in the body. As you take it, it will build in your system. I was on it for over a year, suffered some side effects and had to taper down as I learned more. This drug stays in ur system for a while once youve been on it for long enough. I took almost a month off to clean out my system, then went on 1ml EOD (I buy generic proscar @ 5mg/tab and cut it into quarters, this saves me a lot of $$$) so far hair seems the same. I didnt have any major fallout during my 1 month time off. But daily or EOD seems less a factor as to overall finestride ingestion in a certain period. I just look at my comb or brush and observe fallout ( which is normal) as well as scalp observation... so far all seems the same, using approx 1/2 the amount, saving money and side effects subsided.
Thanks for the info, a collection of information like this from lots of people will be really helpful. Im considering doing something like 3 weeks on 1 week off etc as alternatives to manage my amount over a period.
@@kylekeenan3485 look into Saw Palmetto too. It has properties that aid in hair grow and DHT blocking like finestride... im even thinking cycling back and forth between the 2. Does taking 1.25mg 3x a week have huge difference in comparison to taking 1mg 3x a week? I'm planning to take the generic 5mg finasteride and cut it into quarters instead of the 1mg Propecia because it is a lot cheaper.
They've done a video on this already. Disclaimer obviously talk to your own doctor/do your own research of course don't just trust me on the internet but in general from what I've seen on this channel and understood about dose response curves it's not a big deal to do what you are planning.

@@Jackshephardlostie Yes, but keep in mind that a decrease of DHT can also lead to an increase in testosterone with the risk of aromatization. A small risk but neverthless present.
If I take 1mg/3g week and experience some regrowth, is it possible to achieve even better results by upping the dose closer to 1mg (or 0,7 which Dr. Knudsen said was where the full effect kicked in)? Or it possible that one may need a higher dose over time, and therefore should try increasing to 1mg if side-effect free to avoid slowly loosing more hair?
I took Finasteride 1mg for 3 weeks every other day. At first I didn't notice but one side effect I've noticed is a disconnect in my orgasm when ejaculating. This means in the past I used to experience ejaculations mentally where it almost made my eyes roll back now there's is this numb feeling where ejaculating feels just like taking a piss. I did some research on this and recently in many european countries they are gathering testimonials from men taking Finasteride experiencing side effect ranging from suicide ideation, impotency, low libido etc. And they have finally labeled the condition as "Post Finasteride Syndrome (PFS)" with no current cure and lasting for up 10 years after discontinuation at any dosing level. So I think for now I'm gonna stop taking it in hope that my side effect goes away and science comes up with a cure for hair loss 😐
Is a little bit of Anedonia a sign of the body saying "ok man, im kinda depressed now, hair loss is Completely inhibited" Or depression doesnt even mean the Finasteride is at its max dose for Propecia?
Isn't there a laboratory blood test that may tell the level of DHT in a particular individual? If it's there why can't we have standard prescriptions of FINESTERIDE for specific levels of DHT?
There is a specific exam. But from what I've read, it's not effective because the DHT in the blood is different from the amount of DHT in the scalp. So the exam is not 100% reliable.
I've just had a consultation with a Hair loss practice, and they said they would prescribe me half a 5mg tablet every other day, which equates to around 1.25mg a day. Is this too much? Only way to tell is to remove the intervention and see if these "white patches" subside. Stop Finasteride for a a month, let it wash out of your system entirely and assess the spots. If they're gone, then you know it was bc of Finasteride. If not, then it's possible Fiansteride caused them. However, white patches in your skin aren't typically a side effect of Fin.

Personally I think it just varies from person to person have seen guys have great hair until their 40s and then thin out. To be honest I think it just depends what pattern of hair loss is in your genetics, some are destined to go full bald and others just go thin and the other hair won’t fall out. Like maybe if you lose what you were meant to lose in your 20s and 30s it might not get any worse for years like my grandad had thinned out from I guess late 20s to 30s and he had that same amount of hair for most of his life until he was very old and lost a little bit more but that was when he was like 80s-90s

There shouldn't be any shedding because they both contain finasteride. If you were to switch to Dutasteride, then yeah, there will be some shedding at first.
HI! Thank you for the all of the informative videos! Question: If you develop side effects from finasteride after a prolonged period of taking the drug, is it worth trying it again at a lower dosage? Don't delayed side effects mean that it took a while for it to build in your body, so if you came back at a lower dosage you would still experience side effects once it built up to that point again?
You can take a break every 5-6 months for 1 month, 2 if you think it's better, that will clear the finasteride out of your system and then you start again. Also, yes, you can try lower dosages

Doesn’t seem frequent enough to me. If you have no sides taking it twice a week you won’t have them taking it 5 times either. Why would you put your hair at such a risk? Good luck with the fight!
i really do not understand that. because if we look at the dosage papers. even 0.2 has almost the same effect as the full dose. why he thinks its different from person to person?
Because it is different. Maybe one guy needs 65 percent of his DHT reduced to stop hairloss and another guy needs 99 percent of his DHT reduced in order to stop hairloss. A lot of people need more than finasteride to stop hairloss which is why people use dutasteride.
TL;DR- I dropped lots of weight and stopped weight training and started developing finasteride side effects even on lower doses. Full comment- I have some personal experience that might be interesting to look into which, not being an expert, I feel has value discussing. I started finasteride a while ago on 1mg every day and had been taking this for over a year and a half with no side affects. At the time and throughout I weighed roughly between 84-90kg at 180cm and was definitely overweight but also doing a good amount of weight training and had reasonable amounts of muscle as well as fat. During Covid in the UK I had to stop weight training but I started doing more cardio. In essence now I weigh 73kg with significant losses in both muscle mass and body fat. Interestingly around this time and for the last few months I noticed I was getting side affects, mainly the ones related to sexual performance and urinary discomfort. I came off Finasteride for a month and noticed improvements in all symptoms. I then restarted the treatment but at 3 times a week but noticed the symptoms returning but slightly milder. I am planning to drop down to 1mg twice a week to see if these improve. So far I have noticed no negative changes in my hair retention and no increase in shedding from the decreased dose. I wonder if there’s a two way correlation in the respect to overall body weight and dosage requirements as well as total amounts of testosterone and side affects. I believe i have currently lower total testosterone levels than before since I am carrying far less muscle mass and hadn’t been weight training at all until quite recently which is also known to increase total testosterone. I know this comment is long but hopefully something to talk about!
So why do we have to cut up the finasteride pills ourselves? Why don't the drug companies make finasteride available in fractions of a milliliter if dosing by fractions is so common?

Hi there, Quick Question: how likely is it that people with pre-existing Gynecomastia from puberty have it worsen using finasteride? Any feedback from you experience would be wonderful. Thanks (and thanks for such a great channel)
but what if one is having side effects, tries to lower the dose but experiances hairloss. wouldnt that be hard to come back from since the medication targets the hair at present
Its takes up to a year for normal hairloss to resume once you finish, so adjusting up and down on your doses is unlikely to cause any significant hairloss.
Even with 1mg of Finastride one can get the same side effects as 5mg dosage so I ssume there will always be side effects, there no such thing as 0.0% no side effects by indiviuals, right?
I used to take 1mg a day for 2 years. It stabilizes and helped my hair loss but had some side effects (low libido/watery semen), then I found their videos and upon watching, I tried taking it 3 times per week. I do around 0.8 to 1.2mg per day. I buy the medicine Proscar, which is made of finasteride.

Initially you might shed hair rapidly as the hair follicle goes thru its cycle however the newer hair will grow and take it's place and will be thicker and darker. Same thing happens with minoxidil when you first take it
Have you got any improvement in your hair density since changing the dosage?
My understanding is, finas usually doesn't help much with the front; but it's most helpful on the crown. I'm a few months in, 0.5mg per day and the crown is getting fuller. The front is not noticeable yet. Oh, and no shedding for me. 🤷

Been following you guys for a while now and enjoying all the valuable content.
Thanks!

In your case, I would try topical finasteride first. Almost as effective but with less chance of side effects.
1mg or 2mg per week is effective also I'm suffering from brain fog since 2013 before finasteride I learn to live with it no problem
Should a skinny and small person use less mg than a fat or tall person?
I have the same question I’m not even 5”6 lol
Just got my prescription. I’m 30 years old and I opted to go with the Hims chew blend. Each tablet has both 1.1mg finasteride, 3mg of minoxidil and 3mg biotin. I plan on starting with only twice per week and see how that goes for a year. I will have more than enough biotin based on recommended dosage, but I will also use minoxidil foam on my days off. But 2.2 of finasteride per week seems like a fair start. I really don’t want to exceed 3.3 per week considering I plan to take this for life. I just hope 2mg is enough.

You have suggested this in the past, but why is 3x1mg/week better than 6x0.5mg/week?
Couple reasons...1mg lowers DHT more on a single day than 0.5mg does, the uniformity of the pill being split, and the cumulative effect of taking it more times a week
@BenBenson it can be absorbed thru the skin, so no, the coating is there to protect it from the environment
@BenBenson Actually reason why it has a coating is it can absorb through your skin if you touch it
Quite simply...it doesn't matter what level is in the blood stream. It matters how much DHT is in the skin tissue.

There is a specific exam. But from what I've read, it's not effective because the DHT in the blood is different from the amount of DHT in the scalp. So the exam is not 100% reliable.

Hi Dr Vikram, Is there a required load phase period before reducing the dosage? Thanks
Iam 21, losing hair just like my dad did(same pattern). Used minoxidil for 3-4 months, stopped cuz it didn't feel like it's going to stop.
Then hopped on finasteride 3mg/week dosage.
At the same time around which I'm not sure before or after using it, small white patches started to form on my right arm.
Is this anyway linked to usage of fin.
I can't really visit a dermatologist because of rising covid cases in my country.
Can anyone help me, please?
Only way to tell is to remove the intervention and see if these "white patches" subside. Stop Finasteride for a a month, let it wash out of your system entirely and assess the spots. If they're gone, then you know it was bc of Finasteride. If not, then it's possible Fiansteride caused them. However, white patches in your skin aren't typically a side effect of Fin.
Any update?

is there a age where the Baldness Gene kind of Turns Off ? for e.g at 45 Years Old or something ?
My doc says if you’re still with good hair at the age of 40, it’s very rare you progress to complete baldness, but it may still progress if you don’t take the meds
Mario not true
@Shane Very True ! I have see so many Guys at a Late Age even in their Fifties having Thinning and Gradually Hair Thinning Problem. So on one side the Dr says after 40's the Balding Gene kind of slows down and yet we see so many cases of Guys in their Fifties also having a Balding and Thinning problem ! So what is the case ? Does this goes on till the death of a Man ?
Personally I think it just varies from person to person have seen guys have great hair until their 40s and then thin out. To be honest I think it just depends what pattern of hair loss is in your genetics, some are destined to go full bald and others just go thin and the other hair won’t fall out. Like maybe if you lose what you were meant to lose in your 20s and 30s it might not get any worse for years like my grandad had thinned out from I guess late 20s to 30s and he had that same amount of hair for most of his life until he was very old and lost a little bit more but that was when he was like 80s-90s

Is it okay to take Finasteride 1.25mg every day except Sundays to reach a weekly total of 7.5mg, or will this irregular dosing disrupt my hormones?
Hello everyone, I've been using Finasteride 1mg 3 days a week with minoxidil 5% 2ml per day since November 2020
I had the initial shedding phase from minoxidil, and the hair started growing and become thicker.
In the last few weeks the hair started shedding a lot more than it used to shed. No changes in my diet, I'm very fit and no added stress in my life.
Is this a cyclical thing? I know the hair has a shedding phase, but could it be that I have more hair in this phase right now than I used to?
I started Finasteride, 1mg EOD in September 2020 and the past month I've been suffering from a heavy shed. It can take a VERY long time to see benefits and can be upwards of 2yrs until you're happy with results. Stick it out and see where you're at, at the one year mark.

Thank you for your informative video Dr. Jayaprakash and Dr. Knudsen! I'd like to ask for your advice. I'm on a 1 month break from propecia (I started taking finasteride 3 times per week about 5 months ago). After the break, I'm thinking about switching to proscar, due to the price difference. I heard that switching brands may cause intense shedding, but in this case, both the propecia and proscar have the same licencee company written on the box. After the 1 month break, if I continue with proscar instead, will I still be taking a risk of shedding or other side effects? I would appreciate your feedback.
u should never immediately stop taking fenas, minoxidil.......reduce there dosage gradually so that ur good can prepare it's self in between
There shouldn't be any shedding because they both contain finasteride. If you were to switch to Dutasteride, then yeah, there will be some shedding at first.

What about people who are taking Finasteride for hair loss _and_ an enlarged prostate? What dosage should they take? Thanks!

@@Sean-xr1xj did you really get side effects? Then try lower dose first
i really do not understand that. because if we look at the dosage papers. even 0.2 has almost the same effect as the full dose. why he thinks its different from person to person?
Because it is different. Maybe one guy needs 65 percent of his DHT reduced to stop hairloss and another guy needs 99 percent of his DHT reduced in order to stop hairloss. A lot of people need more than finasteride to stop hairloss which is why people use dutasteride.
TL;DR- I dropped lots of weight and stopped weight training and started developing finasteride side effects even on lower doses.
Full comment-
I have some personal experience that might be interesting to look into which, not being an expert, I feel has value discussing.
I know this comment is long but hopefully something to talk about!

but what if one is having side effects, tries to lower the dose but experiances hairloss. wouldnt that be hard to come back from since the medication targets the hair at present
Its takes up to a year for normal hairloss to resume once you finish, so adjusting up and down on your doses is unlikely to cause any significant hairloss.
