      Oh wow! I think I am too much of a fashion lover to donate 90 percent but I am in awe of you doing so! I’d definitely like to streamline in the coming months/years. We need so much less than most of us have and I’ve always found aspects of minimalism really enticing. I certainly embrace trying to only buy things I really love or need, across multiple areas, not just clothes. Thanks for sharing ☺️ x

    I wish i could do this! I have developed an online shopping addiction throughout the pandemic. I know there's nothing i can order that will bring me happiness... but i keep testing the theory regardless 🙈 and as for makeup... i feel overwhelmed by my purchases.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +18

      Oh bless you! Honestly I would say first of all, this time has been horrible, for everyone. For a while I used food as my coping strategy until I recognised it was destructive and not helping. Sooo you’ve used shopping to cope, you won’t be alone, don’t beat yourself up, just make a different decision tomorrow. ☺️
      Makeup as you know was my downfall a few years back, I desperately wish I hadn’t done it, but I guess you just have to see it as a lesson learnt 🤷‍♀️ But I do empathise, sometimes I want to just throw all the excess I have away, my frugal self is forcing me to use up whatever I can but it’s taking FOREVER 😂
      One thing I can say about not shopping is it’s a bit like a muscle, the more you resist the stronger it gets. Xxx

      Sarah.... do you exercise? Addictions of any kind are caused by a lack of happy chemicals. If you create the necessary chemicals through exercise, it may help you to stop buying.

      Oh Sarah, how I relate. It’s gotten to the point that I stop everything, on baited breath, when a delivery truck is on my street- even when it’s not for me and I’m not expecting an order. Then when I do receive a delivery, it brings a flash of happiness and immediately gets tucked away with the rest of the things I don’t really use or need or sometimes even remember that I have. 😩
      To try to help myself, I’ve been repeating the phrase, “the answer is not in the delivery truck, the answer is not in the delivery truck…” every time I feel the desire for “stuff”. I don’t know what the “answer” is, but I’m determined to figure out how to fill this hole inside of me that doesn’t involve hyper-consumerism and I really hope you’re able to as well. Best wishes.

      I cought myself on this addiction too. I unsubscribed from news letters in my email. And I realized when I catch myself looking into online shopping, I usually do this when I am really bored or tired. So I put everything to my wishlist or basket and once it is done I turn off the phone :D So I dont buy it. I still waste a lot of time scrolling on shit, but at least I dont buy it, and I catch my self on doing this, so step by step.

      Research on youtube or learn something new new instead of buying online as it costs nothing.and a great distraction. Not judging as we have all been there and just need to retrain our minds If I really want something I take a photo of it on my phone and leave it there. and its like I have it. Days later I usually delete it as it was the urge at the time and days later its a distant want that I didn't need anyway I never buy souvenirs I only take photos of them. Its like tricking your mind that you have them and stops impulse buying Also I have always travelled caryon so I aren't tempted to bring stuff back for family and friends.as they get a post card instead. , Like when I went to Rome 2013 I went to the Vatican shop and bought and sent my postcards from the shop right at the top. It was great for the people I sent the post cards to but it was an experience trying to communicate with the Vatican nuns that ran it,, You can get so much joy out of experiences rather than things.

    That is so impressive! When I was younger I definitely fell into the trap of buying stuff because I liked it, but was absolutely not my style. I accumulated so many clothes that I hardly ever wore. I've gotten much much better about that. I've adopted the rule that if I don't feel giddy thinking about using it or wearing it, I'm not buying it. So now I have a much more functional wardrobe! I do think I still buy a bit too much though. That's my next goal :)

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jordan, thank you for watching! Oh I think we all did that when younger, buying clothes for a fantasy self, am certain you aren’t alone there 🤦‍♀️ my worst one in the past was buying things to slim into! That was such a waste of time and money, many of which are still in the wardrobe with tags and probably will have to be sold, probably for a fraction of what I paid for them. I think that’s a great rule and what I will be applying moving forward, unless I LOVE it and want to wear it tons then I can’t have it. I have lots of clothes already that I’m just meh about, or that will do, I don’t need more of those! Xx

    Apologies for the changing lighting in this one - it started to rain whilst filming this!
    P.S for those of you who have been with me for some time, I did do a similar video to this a year ago when I hadn't bought anything for a year (can you believe its been a year since then?!), but that video had sound and quality issues, so one year on I thought it was a great time to update this and delete the old one. Hope you can still take something positive from this video! xx

    Another great video! I’ve stopped buying clothes, makeup and perfumes sometime last year. This year I only bought 4 pairs of shorts to wear at home and a pair of summer pants. I saved so much money for other things that I actually need - new camera and laptop. Would love to see more minimalism and declutter content

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +1

      Hi Kat! It’s so staggering how much money you can save when you put your mind to it isn’t it?! In a few days I won’t have bought anything (bar some personal hygiene products that had ran out like shampoo and face wash) for an entire year and the savings I’ve made are crazy!! You’ve done so well not buying much, I know so many have filled the boredom with online shopping and deliveries, but you are so right, often we shop for things we don’t really need out of habit and deny ourselves the things we really do NEED! Will keep the content coming, current sat coming up with ideas and have a few days over Easter so hoping to film then if it’s not too noisy where I live ☺️ xx

    • @katch7309
      @katch7309 3 года назад

      Exactly that! My problem is boredom shopping too and especially last year during the lockdowns. My obsession was fragrance. I was horrified when I calculated how much I spent in the first few months of the pandemic and how many hours of hard work were wasted on just stuff. Just to reiterate - I love your content. I feel like we are on the same wavelength when it comes to consumerism.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +3

      Oh I know that feeling, when I look back on my crazy few months buying makeup, it makes me feel genuinely sick when I tot up the money spent! I think there’s a genuine balance that we don’t see often online, there’s nothing wrong with owning things, you don’t need to only have one cup and plate 😂 but equally having a closet a la Mariah Carey shouldn’t be lusted after, it’s completely unrealistic! Also I think there’s not enough open conversations about money and saving, it’s not ‘cool’, living for today and buying the latest thing seems to be in, but saving money can be sooo freeing and give you genuine options that the latest Gucci belt never could.

    Being from the USA, I had about 200 things and worn 10-20 regularly. I couldn’t go a week without washing because I would “have nothing to wear.” You really inspired me. I sold 90% on thred up and used the money to buy 2 Christy Dawn dresses. I haven’t bought anything since then. Now I have a special wardrobe that I love and no anxiety wondering what I’m going to wear.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      Thanks so much for sharing Nellie. You've hit the nail on the head here - I don't really advocate never buying anything ever, or saving money at all costs - just not buying the things you don't need/truly care for, because it allows for more of the things you do love, even if they are more expensive. Better to have just a few things you love, even if they are more costly per item, than tons of cheaper items that just hang there unused and unloved. I'm aiming over the next year to slowly declutter and rework my wardrobe so that I end up where you are, that I have just things I really love and enjoy wearing.

    I buy new jeans only when they wear out beyond fixing after I’ve mended them, it seems to be about every 5 years. I sew classic shape tops that I wear for about a decade straight. My grandma was all about having enough items that can be mixed and worn minimally so as not to have to wash them frequently. I think the only things I’ve purchased in the last year and a half have been replacement undergarments.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +1

      Classic shapes are an absolute winner. Now I’m not a million miles from fitting into my old clothes, because I purchased mainly classic styles, I probably won’t NEED to buy much, if anything for some time to come. My gran was a seamstress and like you say you can repair so much if you know how. It’s a shame we don’t teach these things in school anymore - it can save money! Sadly my jeans were past saving, they had had a few little repairs along the way in the past 😂

    I loved this and the bit of fact that only 54% of what we own doesn’t get worn. I can attest to that for sure. I packed away 2 boxes of clothes. And from what is in my closet I’ve decluttered multiple times throughout 2020. That was the goal. I did shop for undergarments and socks last summer (2020) only because I hadn’t purchased any in 3 years. As for clothing I waited until December 2020 and bought 1 pair of leggings, a classic white buttoned down long sleeve blouse and 1 pair of black winter boots, 2 pairs of running shoes (got them on sale) and a track suit (got on sale). That was it. No new makeup, skincare, shampoo/conditioner because I had enough and I had a pixie cut that’s been growing out so not much product is needed there. I did get a sunscreen though that I’ve almost completely used up.
    But I did treat myself to new haircut in 2021, a nice shampoo for my scalp and some nice moisturizers and a couple tinted mineral sunscreens and then went completely mad and purchased 6 bottles of perfume. 😂

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +2

      Hi Zari, thanks for watching! I agree, even weight gain aside I know I have items in my wardrobe that I probably won’t wear again, but letting go can feel so hard! I will purchase items in the not so distant future as I haven’t bought much even prior to this no buy - and moving towards my 40s now, style changes. But I’m hoping to be able to rework a lot of what I have - adding a blazer over a dress, or a fine knit jumper underneath.
      Oh that did make me laugh! Perfume haul indeed 😂 have to admit I love a lovely fragrance, the blurry collection behind me in this video can attest to that! Xx

      Hi Cathryn, thank you for watching. I can relate completely, whilst the option for online shopping is great, I’m one of those people who still enjoys bricks and mortar stores, to be able to feel the fabric, see how it fits etc. So many times items I’ve lusted after when I saw them online completely lost their sparkle once I saw them in real life in the store. I think returning is much more of a pain when you can’t just go to a physical store and get your money back too. X

    I've stopped buying clothes. It's a sickness and a very unnecessary bad habit. Some of it's boredom and lack of other things to do. Some of myparents clothes are up to 35 years old and still good. You wear the same clothes regardless of how many you have. Keep out of the clothes shops and stop looking online, even at second hand apps like Vinted.

    Another great video. I have a rule now that I have lost 27kgs and gone down three dress sizes. My rule helping me to declutter are any clothes 16-12 are out and any clothes I have in 10 -8 that aren't silk, cotton and merino are also out includes blends. I have replaced all my old clothes over the last 18months with near new clothes from Ebay and not really charity shops as they are full of fast fashion clothes now. I purchased these preowned items from selling my larger or items made from the Blends, viscose and other fast fashion fabrics as they itch my skin. Some fabrics are made part by using plastic bottles. I only have 4 pairs of shoes all leather and my Levi jeans and Jackets that I have had for over 10-20 years that have been well looked after and stood the test of time. I think people have to change their mindset, I have had the same mindset. for years, when I have been on holidays or just visiting friends and family and that is nobody really cares what you dress like. It's Also who cares if you have worn a dress twice in a week. dress it up or down to change the look. Its just madness as not a competition. I lost friends in my late teens and early twenties prior marriage as I didn't keep up with the "jones" so to speak. My attitude is we all are equal your clothes don't define you. People love or like you because of you and not what you wear. I came from 11 kids and was happy to just have hand me downs and a good meal each night. People have to control their own way of thinking. Maybe covit has been a reset for the world and people have gone back to the basics and the things in life that really matter to them. Only my opinion.

    I am in the process of catching myself and stopping my online shopping habit between Poshmark and Mercari. It is unreal now looking at the amount of money I have spent and could’ve saved… And some I have to pay down. I just watched your video about recession and it hit me like a brick in the stomach, but in the best way. When you shop online, you are just paying for the clothing item but you’re also paying for shipping. I wonder how much I am paying just in the shipping fees to get it to me… Only to have many things not work out and then have to resell, only getting part of what I paid back. I’ve never had an addiction like this before and it is a bit scary to navigate getting myself out of it. It has definitely caused some issues in my marriage due to the financial component. That was all quite transparent!
    I Love secondhand shopping and finding really quality things for less. This is part of the addiction I think. As a result of frequent secondhand shopping in my local thrift stores, I have realized that many pieces that were trendy months or a year or two prior end up saturating the thrift stores. I have found a few things that were trendy, dropped off, then came back and ended up suiting me well in my personal style so I was able to really save a lot of money on something I really like and wear. Now, instead of thrift shopping, I Will open up my closet to look through what I have, try things on, and figure out new combinations. I have found that this really helps curb my appetite to shop. When I want to get on my phone and shop Poshmark, I will click on a RUclips video like this and listen to it instead or music while I do some dress up. I know it sounds silly but it really does work and helps me enjoy what I have. In my search for an effortless and easy wardrobe that I can just put things on and look great in so I have time to live the rest of my life, I have actually become quite consumed to the point where all I do is think about clothing and shopping to make it all “just right”. That is what I would call silly! Nothing else I will also do is just put my phone down and go grab my book and read for at least five minutes. Often times I find myself reading much longer than that! Similar to getting up and doing a work out without over thinking and talking myself out of it, I put my phone down and just grab them book. Anyway, thank you for sharing on your channel with all of us and being so open about your experiences!

I maybe will in the future as you’re not the only one who has asked, but if I’m honest my weight is something I’ve been uncomfortable talking about over the years, especially as someone who struggled with BDD. I can say it was pretty boring though, lots of veggies, portion control, minimal sugar, watching simple carb intake and consistency over time. It did take few months but got there in the end. I put a little back on at Christmas (as we often do) but the simple consistent approach seems to work best for me. Hope that helps x

    I had a splurge on M&S and Esprit when they had a sale on, that was the only time I spent on clothes in the last year (excluding basic undies). I am ashamed to say two of the tops I bought I am not even sure I like now, and I've not even worn them :-)

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +1

      Oh no!!!! What a shame! I think that’s probably one of the things that’s helped me not shop too, I like to be able to easily take things back to store, or if I’m honest try on in store if possible so I don’t even take something home that doesn’t fit properly or whatever. I’m no angel, I’ve got two dresses hung in my wardrobe that I bought to ‘slim into’ a few years back. I’m not far off them fitting now, they are lovely and I will probably wear them and enjoy them once they fit, but I wish I hadn’t bought them as my style has changed a bit since then and I’d potentially buy something different now 🤷‍♀️

    I’ve been on a low buy and I had to replace multiple pairs of jeans in the last few months as they all developed holes (five pairs) - absolutely fine since have been wearing them for around 5yrs. But, fast forward, relalised the first pair of Levis were actually too big and sit way too high on my waist that I can’t wear them without pulling them up constantly, so bought another pair, this time from J Brand, on try on they were perfect, as soon as I wore them for a few minutes, after taking the tags off, they fit terribly and are falling off my bum. I am gutted. I need to try and take them in somehow. I just can’t believe two for two, the fit is terrible.

I have lots of clothes, many of which I still like and won’t be getting rid of, but because of that it wouldn’t be a bad idea for me to set some sort of rule about what new comes into my wardrobe, hence me mentioning good quality items that I love 😊. I’m so happy to hear people like yourself mention second hand, so many items have good life left in them even if someone else doesn’t want them, especially if they are good quality and not cheap fast fashion xx

It’s swings and roundabouts at times too as I ended up not buying much clothing in the following years, but now I’m buying quite a bit as things have simply worn out. I guess the most important thing is knowing why you are buying (not being ruled by emotions) and being mindful.

However, our family relocated from sunny Phoenix, AZ to the cold snow Shenandoah Valley in Virginia so I'm giving myself a pass for what I spent on clothing for myself and my whole family. We had little need for super warm cloths in AZ and in VA it snows and is very cold. Well, very cold to this AZ girl lol
    But now my wardrobe includes warmer clothing so other than my alway growing kids I should be good to not clothing shop for some time.

And even now I tend to sit on a purchase for a little while, and a lot of the time that desire just dissipates. I still love clothes, I’ll likely never have a capsule wardrobe, but it’s changed my relationship with shopping for the better. I’m much more considered these days. Thanks for watching!

      I think its a hard time to sell at the moment. With so many of us stuck indoors, we aren't going to social events or often even workplaces where we might need/want clothes. I think this is probably impacting interest. I will probably sell some items, but waiting until we return to some form of normality where hopefully there will be a larger demand. xx

    I started adding up the money I spent monthly and it was embarassing for anyone else to see. But my daughter told me her total was even more. Over the course of 3 months I spent nearly 1500.00! A no buy challenge is just what I need.

      It’s so weird isn’t it?! I’ve used the same technique before and it can be incredibly eye opening. Spending money on clothes isn’t necessarily bad, but I realised I was telling myself I couldn’t afford certain things and yet spending freely on clothing in the past! The amount I had been spending would have covered some of the other things I wanted easily. Good luck with your no buy 😊

    I honestly don't understand why people buy loungewear. Just take your going out clothes that are a little old, faded or worn out and use them at home.
    That's what I do and I've saved a lot of money. Loungewear clothes are expensive.

      They indeed can be. I don’t understand the huge trend in relation to loungewear either. I do have one or two items that I suppose could be deemed ‘loungewear’ but they’re years & years old and were purchased before it really was a trend!

    "Noone buys from the charity shop." "Noone"? Really? Frankly, if people stopped buying clothes at retail prices, maybe the overpricing would stop.
    I used to think that thrift stores smelled bad, so I never bought anything at them. But when my financial situation changed for the worse, I started shopping there. I simply told myself to ignor the smell in order to take advantage of dirt cheap prices, things can be washed and smell fresh again, not a big deal. I was amazed at the great name bradd clothes and very low prices I found. Wish I would not have wasted big bucks for the years leading up to this epipheny.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +2

      You have taken what I said completely out of context here. I didn’t even say ‘no one buys from charity shops’ as a generalisation, only in relation to poor quality fast fashion that is so often donated. I’ve bought from charity shops in the past, I have several second hand dresses so it would be most odd for me to say that no one shops in them.
      What I said was poor quality items tend not to sell even in charity shops and they cannot be recycled due to the fabric composition. This is a fact. Peoples washed out misshapen poor quality fast fashion tends to end up in landfill even after donation.

      @@KirstyKirby I beg to differ about my first sentence in my comment. In fact, when I heard you say that, I replayed it to be sure I heard your Exact words. Plus I listened to your whole video before I responded, so that I could be sure I understood your whole context. Please watch your video. This was only the second video of yours I have watched. I base my comment on Only that video, not on what you may have said in any of your other videos.

      @@bque9444 I have watched it back to double check, despite already reading my original notes from this video.
      I stand by my comments. I was talking about poor quality garments and fast fashion in relation to peoples attitudes that it can just be donated.
      I said ‘a lot of that stuff thats misshapen and isn’t good quality, no one buys from the charity shop anyway’. This is true, many charity shops have been asking not to be donated poor items as they have to pay to store it, no one even wants it and then it has to be disposed of. You said yourself you’ve been amazed at the brand name clothing at great prices. No one is going to pay for a washed out Primark T Shirt no matter how much we try to rationalise buying lots of clothing by saying it can be donated.
      Again I have second hand items, I’m intending a trip to charity shops to look for a few bits of art for my new house, it would be very odd to suggest no one goes in them whilst simultaneously shopping in them.
      Edit - I’ve seen your edited comment. I wasn’t remotely referencing things I may have said in other videos. Only this one. The comment you were upset about was taken out of context. People do shop in charity shops, myself included from time to time, but people don’t tend to buy cheap poor quality rubbish from them, which is what I was discussing.
