I would like to implement a no buy month every other month 😅 that's my goal for 2023. Sounds silly, but i think it's a good start. I'm not a huge consumer anymore, I've managed to keep under control my shopping habits in the past 2 years and I'm ok with that. 🙂

This is a great idea. I did a no buy for makeup Jan 2023, doing really well so far but I noticed I switched my energy to clothes. While it’s been a clothes low buy I was still buying a lot. For February I am going to attempt a complete no buy of clothes & makeup.

That's not silly at all! If that works for you, great.. I'm very curious as to what the average we spend on clothes per month is... The last two years was pretty heavy for me so I am implementing a no buy year- no more in 24! 😬

I have the opposite problem. I just can't bring myself to buy new clothes because I have panick attacks and I feel guility whenever I spend money😞. I should do like a "buy at lest 10 new clothing pieces this year, please!" challenge, but even thinking about it makes me feel sad.

Try buying second hand from charity shops. The cost is less, the money goes to a good cause, and you may save the item from landfill. Even if it's a wrong choice you have still done some good, and can donate it to charity to continue the good.

I also find it difficult to buy new clothes without having old ones getting damaged etc as per rule: two out one in (in my case I adapted 1 in 1 out… ). Buying an excellent quality helps (I don’t fancy second hand or pseudo sustainable green washing scam brands).

This is really hard for you. I also went through some "underconsumption", for want of a better word, to do with being a carer for a family member and not spending time or money on myself. But I got to a point where I was missing truly essential items, including waterproof footwear, so I had to bring things into balance and try to buy things I genuinely needed but not waste money.

I did a low buy challenge in 2021. I'm a fashion and style addict, but during the pandemic working from home I've realised, my wardrobe is enough for 3 lifes. I was "allowed" to buy replacements only for essential pieces, which wasn't the case, as even after decluttering few items I still had plenty to wear. I've got weak 2 times. Now I don't need any challenge as I become a better consumer, not at least thanks to your inspiration, Signe. I buy way less, but higher quality pieces, which I choose carefully without compromises. I'll never become a minimalist, as style is my passion and the way to express myself, but now I'm fine where I am. After this video I've counted my new items from 2022 out of curiosity (which wasn't had as I pin them to have all my wardrobe digital some day): 11 pieces (clothing, shoes, scarfs, gloves).

Thank you for helping shift my mind away from guilt. I'm pregnant right now, and we're pretty poor at this current time, so it was a strain just to get a handful of pregnancy items; and pretty soon I'll be post-partum! I've been so guilty over every cent I spend, regardless of how needful. So taking a "no-buy year" into a "rationally try to work with what you've got, but if you need it, you need it" was very freeing

I’m 64 and since my early 40’s I started investing in good quality long wearing classics. Being true to a colour palette I love and works for me. I can’t think of a year since then that I’ve bought over a dozen pieces of clothing. The exceptions are underwear and socks. Even socks though - I invested in Falke cashmere blend for winter and a pair can last over 5 years. Jeans felt problematic as the styles change so much often: low rise, Mom jeans, skinny legs, wide legs but I realized a good classic cut Jean never really loses its style. I have a collection of scarves to add colour and liven up outfits. I’ve been wearing the same blundstones for 8 years - almost time for a new pair. I have a giant very furry dog that I spend a lot of my life with so as clothes wear they become clothes to wear when adventuring with the dog. I can’t tell you how light it feels to get up in the morning and love everything in my closet. It took a journey like the one Signe is on to get there but I love the results. I, too, will buy second hand but only to get exactly the quality and item I’m looking for. Great video Signe with lots of good information.

I did a no buy in 2018 as a shopping detox. It worked! Plus I saved a ton of money. I realized how much I have. My style has changed ( going to retire soon) and I tried to do a low buy in 2022 of 12 items but I bought 30 but mostly second hand. I think a no buy is better for me. This year I made a list of what I need (4 items) and I will see if I stick to it. Bottom line, bring mindful about what we buy is the key objective. I think we have to forgive ourselves, especially when we enjoy fashion. I highly recommend clothing swaps! Fun way to get “ new to me” items and save clothing from landfill. Thanks Signe for what you do! 💚💚💚

Thank you for including the comment about postpartum body. After my first, I wound up back at the same weight, same size, but different proportions (I joke my hips dropped 2"...but it's true!). I've always struggled with jeans fitting, but now that it is exaggerated, I know that I CANNOT buy jeans/pants that have less than a 13" front rise - and back rise needs to be pretty lengthy, too. I appreciate channels like yours and others that talk about fashion in a sustainable way, so I can change the programming of "consuming more is the way to find the perfect clothes" to being patient, loving what I already have, finding things that work for me (NOT making "me" work to fit into things), and - as you mentioned today - learning that I might need to finetune my "enough is enough" mentality. Hard to do in the current culture, but sounds like it could refresh my soul.

Thanks for your frank discussion of this topic. For my personality and context, 'no buy' tends to evoke a sense of scarcity which I find not particularly wholesome. What i do instead is to take it slow (like, I can stalk an item and leave the window open on my computer for a month), be aware of cycles (we moved somewhere new, needed to redecorate and buy more winter clothes but now that's mostly done), and also purchase with the flows of nature (I tend to try to stock up on anything I buy online before the worst of winter hits, so I don't have to be retrieving and processing packages in minus 30 Celsius). All of that sort of naturally leads to a 'low buy' situation at certain times, and more abundant 'feast buying' at other times. It's an experiment.

Im used to be an shopping addict but even then i didnt buy senselessly. I very rarely had regrets because im very conscious of being wasteful not just with clothes, shoes etc but food and life in general. The difference now us during and after the pandemic when i wznt able to shop in store my shopping (ive had many bad experiences with online shopping)slowed and it didnt make any impact on my life. I started a no buy year and failed on day one. I've got a second hand scarf saved that I really want to buy but I'm resisting it. I'm thinking of changing my no buy to a low buy and giving myself £1 'pocket money' each day. That way, for every pound I want to spend I'll have to wait the same number of days before buying that item so a £50 item of clothing will require a 50 day wait to evaluate whether it's still something I want to buy.

Ive been working on honing my style, knowing what works, what I ACTUALLY wear and getting disciplined about only purchasing items that fit those requirements. Then I moved onto no impulse buying, only buying items I had identified as missing or that after deliberation decided would truly bring me joy and would stay in my wardrobe for the long haul. Now I am moving towards purchasing as close to 100% thrifted/pre loved as I can feasibly get. I’ve also begun learning to knit and sew so that I can also utilize thrifted fabrics and good quality yarns to make myself items exactly as I want them. Honestly, when it takes you such a long period of time and care to make the item, you’re going to appreciate it a lot more. I heard the best advice from a dietician years ago: “You can have whatever you want. There’s just one caveat: you have to make it yourself. So if you want ice cream, have ice cream. But make it yourself from scratch.” When you think about the time and effort that goes into making food from scratch, you’re not going to just down it all in one go and you’re going to think twice about how much do you really want it before even making it. I’ve adopted that into my life as much as time allows and it’s made a massive impact on the quality of our eating habits. Now I want to incorporate that ethos into my wardrobe as well. I have no delusions that I am going to transform into a seamstress anytime soon. But if I can decide, for example, that all my knitwear will be ones I make myself only, well, I am going to take a lot of time and care to ensure it’s a design I know I will want in my wardrobe for years to come, I will source the best quality wool, and I will take extra good care of the finished product and will appreciate it all the more. I’m already planning a few items for summer that I can make myself from thrifted items/fabrics for the summer months. I don’t know how successful or sustainable this will be, but I am going to give it a go and see. Honestly, it’s not even clothing that’s the biggest challenge for me, it’s footwear. I really struggle with identifying what I truly need and what is the most versatile options and commit to saving up to buy really good quality versions of those. It’s the one category where trends get me every time. So, that’s also one of my intentions for this next phase: buy only good quality footwear, no more cheap disposable trend led options.

Love the video! I decided to do a no buy January in December. I have a saving goal I want to hit by this summer for my student loans so I am going to try month by month to not buy but save. And then this is also helping me double check if I really need or just want an item. I also unfollowed a ton of brands on instagram and just added their business to a list so I can look them up in the future. Much less temptations!

I’m proud of myself for the low buy year 2022. I bought 9 items that weren’t replacements (like underwear and socks.) One item was a mistake because the color isn’t flattering for me. Two items I altered because they didn’t look right on me. They are better now. I learned I need to carefully view the item on my body, for fit, silhouette, color, length, proportion. One of the best ways at the store is by taking photos in front of a mirror. Thanks for encouraging us to consume less And more thoughtfully.

After my dryer chewed up 75% of my clothes I was extremely upset but once I dealt with my feelings about having less I was able to wear what I had left and was actually a lot happier. Not having to think about what I wanted to wear and of course less laundry to do has all been positives. I think being realistic about the things you need to add to your wardrobe or replace can be fun but once you get to a point where you have too much than it really weighs you down. I bought a new shirt just last month in about 3 years now 😂 my only weakness now is handbags and I think I’m actually not as bad as I thought. I guess my point after my long winded story is that we learn by trial and error and as long as we are making progress and being honest with ourselves that’s all we can do 💜

It is helping me be more intentional with my purchases. I mean asking do I already have something that can be used instead. Do I just want it because it is on sale? I am learning a lot about myself. As my body does not change significantly through years, I’ve found approach which suits me the best. It is to buy with future in mind.
If the piece at a first glance is not going to last at least three years in my wardrobe, no matter why (poor quality, discomfort, overly exaggerated trendiness, out of my general style), I won’t buy it.
I usually wait before buying to make up my mind, look through my wardrobe and think if new item will work well with my other items. This also means I prefer to buy less items of better quality. It doesn’t mean I have little to no clothing, in fact throughout years I’ve accumulated enough to wear different looks and be happy about myself.
Most of items live in my wardrobe 5 years, some are here longer than decade now. Some of my handbags are about two decades old. If maintained properly, clothing and accessories could last quite a lot.
The only thing that can affect this approach is significant body change. I had to replace most of my shoes two years ago, because my feet changed with age and became wider, so all of my made-to-order high heels were no longer wearable. Also, I no longer can wear very high heels which I was a big fan of back in 2000-2010. So I decided to let go. I gave away 20+ pairs of shoes and replaced them with 11 new pairs, which included classic pumps, open toe sandals, ankle boots, knee high boots and winter boots. Those fit me great and will keep me covered at least five more years, I hope so.

I am curious; with a goal of only 10 to 12 new items this year have you thought about where you want to focus your color purchases? For example t-shirts or jewelry to bring more color around your face, or handbags and shoes for pops of color. Just wondering if this is something you have analyzed and planned for.

    • @UseLess_dk
      @UseLess_dk  Год назад +2

Great question! It is indeed going to be colour focused as that’s where I feel I have the biggest “gap” in my wardrobe right now, and wearing more colour is where I see myself heading this year. I’ve got enough neutrals already, so those will be on a low! 🙏🏻

Kudos to you 🎉 I too took the challenge and must say I failed miserably (bought over 100 new items 🥴) I went in with the completely wrong mindset but I can still say it definitely helped me to be more accountable for my behaviors and curbed my appetite for new if not just out of sheer disgust at my own gross negligence. I’ve managed to get through January with only 3 new items (one of which was a replacement) which is huge considering this time last year I already had 9 new things. I’m proud of my growth and of what I’ve learned and you were a big influence, so thank you 🤍

I do not buy much in the first place, so a no-buy is not for me. What I will try to do this year, is to be more mindful about what I buy, I have made some purchases that went "wrong". I have either bought the wrong size, or the item did not really fit me. But instead of returning it, I tried to make it work, but it did not work out. And to sell clothes where I live is almost impossible, and just donating the clothes is also not good, knowing that just a small percent of donated clothes will be sold. So I will try to do better this year!

  • @juliecarns
    @juliecarns Год назад

The no-buy challenge is not a solution for over-spending.
In 2022, I found a new-to-me resale shop and am blessed to have found a long new pleated black skirt, new Ralph Lauren black handbag, new blue stripe open neckline shirt that a wore 2-3 times a week and it still looks great. I also found beautiful luxury marked down to $10 from $120-$100. Used rain boots, used garden pants to tuck in boots, used linen dress to wear over this and a couple hats on resale.
Only buying used is not the answer either because you can spend an exorbitant amount on a resale item.
Knowing your best colors, true style, fit and lifestyle clothing needs is absolutely important.
Finally, finding your self worth in yourself not your clothes is vital.

Clothing is my week spot, so I tried a no buy for a year. It was really hard and I was really unhappy. It happened that I went on a vacation trip and bought two nice lingerie sets there as a memory. I really felt guilty within the first days, but than I realised, that simply my body changed and have gained weight. And I haven’t worn comfy underwear in a long time because I wasn’t allowing myself to buy new clothing in this no buy year. Wearing comfy underwear gave me so much joy and confidence that it clicked: I needed to declutter my wardrobe much more than a no buy. I shouldn’t buy excessively but I shouldn’t force myself to wear not fitting clothes and forbid myself to buy clothes that fit me. After radically downsizing my closet to only the clothes that are fitting I‘m now so happy. It’s a real small capsule, but it fits my lifestyle and my body. Since then I haven’t forced me into a no buy, but I also experienced that I didn’t have the urge any more to shop. Because there are only fitting clothes, there’s no need to „fix“ a look. When there is really something missing I write it down in my notebook and go on a „hunt“. I let my closet, my lifestyle and my body define what I need. And it turns out I added only a few really needed pieces and I rather buy nothing than compromise. I‘m also not so afraid any more about gaining or loosing weight. Because my wardrobe is now so small and I’m satisfied, I know buying new clothes after a body change won’t financially be a destaster. Your content really helped me a lot to curate a good capsule and also your no buy inspired me to my no buy. And I think I wouldn’t have gotten to the point that what I needed was a radical downsize and appreciate my body, without this no buy. So thank you a lot for this video!

I definitely went on a low buy during 2020 and 2021. Until last year in January I realised I don’t have anything to wear, my clothes were worn out. By around end of last year I started buying all the essentials I would need in 2023 and now I’m trying to repair my older outfits. Now most of them look as good as new. But my style and body has also changed…luckily some of the clothes were neutral enough to go through every style changes😅😅 Fast forward to today…I do not need to buy new clothes except for 1 stripped outfit. Maybe I should try second hand clothes?

Forcing myself to go on a low-buy with anything in my wardrobe (this includes handbags, shoes, and other accessories) has helped me so much whenever I become too hung up on wanting more of something. I'm also starting to really track my purchases and put myself on a budget whenever I can.
So, while I know I don't want to sacrifice quality when it comes to my style and my budget (my budget can sometimes fluctuate depending on what I'm looking for), I'm finding that procrastination kind of helps me with gaining that perspective on whether or not it's worth it. This especially helps when I want to play with different trends that I see within the influencer community. Thank you for sharing your own insights and experiences, Signe! 😊

Before that, my parents would only give me new clothes once a year and it was only a few pieces. So I was really excited when I could afford to buy something more frequently. Even though I never had a shopping spree, I accumulated clothing with time and even more since I would hand wash them so they could last longer... Well, anyways, going back to my what my parents did I now only buy once or twice year.

I associate not buying wardrobe items with the two times, each years-long, when I really had nothing, not even one item of outerwear (jacket or coat) for winter, only one pair each of jeans and shoes, etc. It didn’t feel good then, and I’m not going to do it again. I suppose I developed a scarcity-mindset, but I discovered that can’t be happy with really having nothing but three outfits to wear. I enjoy having abundance and selection in my wardrobe now, but I try to buy responsibly, for one thing I don’t buy any synthetic fabrics or plastic footwear, they don’t have any future, except in landfills. A simple cashmere sweater, 100% cotton straight-leg jeans, good leather footwear or silk shirt will appeal to another wearer if I decided to move it out of my own wardrobe, a trendy polyester blouse or top won’t. Natural-fiber fabrics can also be recycled and are biodegradable, even blends with a few per ent of a synthetic aren’t. I also choose classic styles with the intention of wearing them forever, and, mostly, I can and do. I do get tempted to buy fast-fashion, so I try to not look at those websites too often. The great styles and low prices are enticing.
