Bonjour Signe, I'm from France and these are traditionally our main wardrobe principles:
    - buy only what you need and what suits you and your lifestyle,
    - choose quality over quantity,
    - choose items that you can keep for a long time,
    - less is more,
    - be presentable, chic and comfortable at home too.
    - take care of your wardrobe items (and what you own in general)
This is what my beloved parents taught me many decades ago on this topic, and I've loved applying their guidelines all my life. Whenever I tried to disregard them, I regretted it! So I'm always delighted to hear your principles, excellent advice, and see that you are never judgmental. Being mindful of the planet, its resources and its/our/our children's future is also always on top of your list and I love this. You are doing an excellent job! 💌💯

I think French people approach clothes like food. It’s a lifestyle not a diet. If you choose something that is true to you then it will do all of the wonderful things. I too love taking care of my clothes. I’ve always found it soothing in a hectic life. Please correct me if I have misinterpreted the culture. I’m from the south and have never lived in France. My grandmother made formal gowns and wedding gowns so I was taught respect for line and quality from a very young age. Applying to myself has been a journey. I think presentable could be a white tee shirt that fits beautifully and a strand of pearls. It could be a cozy sweater with a scarf or earrings. It could be a silk shirt and jeans. What do you actually like to wear?

Previous years, like around 10 or so, have all been low-buy or no-buy years due to economics, lifestyle, and health. This was the first year that I was able to make it a high-buy year, mainly because most of my wardrobe consisted of pajamas and yoga pants. I took the time this year to really delve into my personal style, my body type, my colouring, etc. I planned out what I needed and checked on what I had and made a comprehensive list. I then went off and started to fill that list.
An example would be jeans. I didn't have one pair at all. So I bought two - one distressed and casual and the other a dark wash and more formal. I also wanted a blazer but finding a good quality women's plus size blazer in small'ish town Alberta was quite the challenge. I ended up finding a tweed, moderate quality men's blazer at a second hand store while visiting a larger center. In this manner I've been curating my closet. I've given away a lot of the things that didn't suit me or did not fit. I've stashed away a tote of clothing to try on next spring and decide on then.
This year my biggest take-away has been that finding a style, cut, etc that works for you can not only elevate your look but can also elevate your sense of self. Dressing in a way that makes me feel confident has been a game changer for me.

I live in a smallish town in BC but recently found an amazing full length wool/cashmere wrap coat from Pringles of Scotland that fits perfectly, in a consignment shop here in town. And, I've stopped impulse buying. That's been my biggest accomplishment.

I don't but clothes but I do buy fabric and sew my clothes and many of your ideas work in this world too. Quality fabrics, proper techniques and instead of buying a new pattern all the time I prefer to make changes to existing patterns. I can take a favorite tee shirt pattern and adjust the neckline, lengthen the sleeves, make it more boxy or fitted, cropped or longer. I can take many patterns and change them up to look completely different. Your content even helps people like me because it can be overwhelming with new patterns coming out every season. Find your style and be true to yourself so you don't end up sewing things you never wear. Thank you.

I never found a pair of jeans that even came close to fitting me, despite 50 years of looking, buying, then rejecting them, I’m 62. I recently had a new idea - I tried a pair of men’s. They fit perfectly! But, they don’t have the feminine styling like the smaller, higher pockets that women’s have. So, at least I have one basic pair, in a darker denim wash, if necessary for the situations where nothing else will work, like clearing or walking through brush, but mostly I have worked around this problem all my life with stretchy or silky trousers, skirts and dresses. (I have a straightish shape, with skinny hips, bottom and thighs and a poorly defined waist). One pair of jeans enough, I haven’t cleared brushy areas for decades, anyway, since a back injury. But for bonfires or campfires, rustic barbecues or other outdoorsy-type occasions, jeans are the most appropriate option.

It's clear you know your stuff when it comes to colour, the sweater suits you perfectly! The last point really resonated with me, it's exciting to add something new to your wardrobe but how much of a difference will that piece really make overall? I feel like nothing I could buy from now on will make much of a dent so it's time to stop buying and work with what I already have.

the “high contrast” principle truly works. I now have “pandemic white” hair, which I love. No more hair dye, just a great cut. That said, black & white look fantastic on me now. I found that the red/pink spectrum and turquoise are great as they bring a healthy glow to my skin. Now I stick to the high contrast b&w with pops of color. I’ve been able to donate clothing items that don’t meet my style. That was a big clothing pile I donated. With those non-complimentary pieces gone I was worried at first. But now it seems I have so much more to wear. I feel like I have more room in my closet and more to wear, strange but true. ❤ love your channel. Thanks for great advice.

Putting more time and attention into our wardrobes before buying really pays off. I have hurriedly ordered items without really thinking them through, only to discover I already bought the exact same item! During the lockdown, I was just ordering things a bit thoughtlessly because I felt I needed new things to break up the terrible boredom and isolation. I wasted money and resources, I realize now, but I try not to blame myself too much because the shopping did help me get through a very difficult time, I was completely isolated for more than two years. But, I’m working on eliminating this type of unhealthy reaction to difficult circumstances. (Unfortunately, I had to stop my essential daily walks during lockdown, which really contributed to the depression that led to the shopping binge).

I think that was a very common reaction during the worst of covid; fear, boredom, isolation, and anticipation of scarcity are tough to fight! The one thing that helped me stop the cycle was being a volunteer in the Moderna study. Those scientists were so inspiring, and it was so rewarding! Im hoping to join an RSV study next. Helps refocus my buying impulse by feeling more purposeful!

It was good to finally learn your name, Signe. I wondered what it was. Sustainability is always great. A lot of my wardrobe was purchased at a consignment shop. I also know how to sew and look forward to making my own clothes to add to what I already have. A couple years ago I took an old black wool jacket and added silver ribbon to the shoulder seams,, side seams, and top of pockets. Than if found some buttons to add more flair. It was styled with a single button closure, but I bought 2 extra ones that can be worn with it as add-on later when I shrink enough to wear the jacket with front folded over. The buttons are a great style with a pearlized light interior with what seems like a silver braided type exterior edge. then I bought matching smaller buttons to add 2 on each sleeve as if they had been there already. Another fun garment a friend helped me with was to take a thin silky like navy blue skirt to which we added multiple very long scarves sewn horizontally around the skirt, into something inspired by Vogue magazine. I actually wore the scarf skirt on a trip to an art museum with a nephew of mine back n 2019. It was a big hit with museum employees, as you can well imagine. I am so thankful for your ethic of buying and using less. I get turned off by RUclipsrs who have a closet as big as my one bedroom apartment. I am 78 and have a great sense of my own style and look forward to enhancing my wardrobe, while getting my weight back down to where it should be. I have a black silk tuxedo I bought in 1984 and had lost enough weight to be almost back into it. Thanks so much for being you, Signe, and I look forward to more of your posts on here.

Thank you Signe, I have recently learned the concept of Contrast Dressing. I really didn’t realize there was a name for it. I too love solids and found myself looking very monochromatic. So I have added texture (lace blouse/textured sweater), shape variation (like a boxy sweater or high low hemline on a top) to help me look like I tried. I also have started paying attention to necklines and sleeve shapes. The boot thing has been very difficult this season. I have ordered one pair of boots (synthetic tan color) in a higher quality brand. Comfort has been a huge issue for me. So I am really going to take my time to find the perfect black bootie. I have also realized it’s ok for me to have a few extra pair of shoes than I originally thought I needed. It’s been fun learning along the way. I am in my late 50’s and a size 14 (American sizing) so shopping and finding the best brands has been challenging at times. I appreciate all of your hard work in helping with your great videos & insight. It’s helped me put things into perspective when I feel stumped. 😅❤😊 Wardrobe Hugs to you 🤗👖from California

Agree with everything. I've just deleted items off my wishlist l, they became irrelevant surprisingly fast (6-12 months). And I hear you about sometimes having to go for new items from conventional brands, if it means you get lots of wear out of them. In the past I've bought several items from sustainable brands, or second hand, to fill a wardrobe gap, even though they weren't quite right, and regretted the waste of resources and money later on. You've got to mix different strategies to reduce your consumption, different things will work for different people.

I occasionally add in an item or accessory in pink, red, orange, purple or yellow, however, I end up get tired of these items more quickly. That really is a nice color on you! I can relate to the jeans after pregnancy crisis! I’ve had three kids and currently have no jeans that fit properly... although I was never very good at finding clothes that fit before pregnancy either. But now it’s REALLY hard.

I struggled with guilt this year about the very large donations I made of used clothing to a local charity. I'm only 4 ft 10 inches tall and lost about 45 lbs over the last two years. Good, right? But major body change, so many of my clothes just were so large they were just beyond altering. I hope all my donations aren't in a land fill somewhere. I read that selling was better to insure that doesn't happen, but I just didn't have the time or stamina to try to sell. I altered everything I could, and much of what I've bought for replacement is second hand, but not always; it's tougher to find quality petite size second hand. And when you lose a lot of weight, it's tempting to buy the new shiny outfit in your new small size. But it's a process, right? Your channel helps! Thank you!

Black is a simple option because nearly every item comes in it, but it doesn’t really look good on most women. I don’t like it near my face at all, so I usually try to brighten black tops or dresses with jewelry, a scarf, or a white collar underneath. Black bottoms seem so basic, but I really prefer light colors for skirts and trousers, too. I do wear some black, I just try to keep it to a minimum. Many of the high-quality wardrobe items that I really love, like silk and good leather footwear, only come in black, it’s frustrating. I would happily wear white, taupe and cool pastels to mid-tones all the time, they are my most flattering hues.

that color looks great on you! i like black too, but it looks draining and harsh on me. i am trying to stop impulse buying and find that waiting longer is a good way to determine whether i really NEED it or not. my collection is looking great...now just to use them all and get creative.

My biggest struggles are fit because I’m short and accepting that you CANNOT buy time. When I buy something because my life is out of balance it is rarely an item I wear often or keep. I was trying to buy the life I wanted instead of altering the one I was living. Learning this has kept the Christmas season impulses very low. Taking the time to evaluate my body and accept that I want only soft clothes were the biggest wins this year.

I did purchase new clothes this year. Mostly because I was pregnant. But I tried to be mindful about it, I asked myself always if I am going to use and wear them moving forward and kept stuff in the basket for a longer time before placing my order.

I’m learning that I can rewear the most crazy item like a leopard print skirt ,in my wardrobe as long as I love it! Another thing is I can get a lot of wear out of something that is so casual, but I would like to define it more and make into something that looks more cool and effortless. Like maybe sweats that look good with a long jacket for instance. Another thing is I’m almost allergic to jeans, but I can’t quite grasp the concept of skirts, so I need to find better constructed pants/ slacks and I’m thinking Sézane has something close to what I like as far as style( I have an older style for my age) , but I’m not sure how sustainable it is or should I feel guilty trying something that I’m not sure is the right thing for my wardrobe ? I don’t have an extensive wardrobe, and I’m looking for good all year or a small ten item wardrobe that I can love for years to come. I have a tough time with tops, but love sweaters. How do I marry the two so I end up loving a good top?

I moved on a sailboat in 2021 and started sabbatical in 2022. It's definitely forced me into low buy and quality buy.
My struggles continue with items that I bought years ago and serve a purpose but don't match clothes well. For example, I bought a SPF lightweight jacket years ago in blues from Coolibar. There's nothing wrong with it and I need sun protection. But it also doesn't match or fit well with tops.

I’d say my biggest wardrobe pitfall now is being influenced by “current” colours vs what looks good on me. When I’m looking at my wardrobe, I don’t gravitate towards those colours that aren’t current even though I know they suit me. Anyone else find this? So I’m often looking for something current to wear and shopping for it. I look forward to your colour series to see if you have any tips about this? Idk, maybe it’s just ignoring social media…

I retire this year. Which means I don’t need workplace clothes. I stop buying blouses, dresses, suit pants, and shoes. It was hard and tempting whenever I saw beautiful pieces and super prices. I did buy a few new casual, active, and athleisure pieces to encourage me to change out of clothes I sleep in. It’s too easy to wear sweats 24/7. I started daily swimming since retiring therefore I bought bathing suits and rash guards to entice me to not give up.

I hit the stores to find my size and find some deals, it’s so hard across US brands to know what to buy used even season to season
Even the nicer brands are losing quality, things are hard to wash or don’t hold up well

What I learned last year was that I should avoid impulse purchases especially if it's something different from my usual style. Is it a good addition to my wardrobe or is it just the urge to reinvent myself (which I usually regret). Also thinking about how many of my current clothes I can wear with a new item. If I had to buy more new clothes to actually wear it, I shouldn't buy it.

Signe, not to sound negative, but a lot of "Influencers" use an inordinate amount of black and white in their outfit choices. They don't seem to put in the thought and creativity that you do as a professional. Great video.

Thank you for this video ! It is very motivating to see you reflect on the topic. As someone who moved to a more warm city I learned this year to have more balance in my closet season wise and let go of things that I had to much of for this climate... so that if I move again I will not feel again that my wardrobe can not serve me. I still have the four seasons but the spring is a bit hotter and the autumn and winter more mild... so I had to make a few ajustements here and there especially regarding footwear. Style wise, I was always a bit soft classic and a bit romantic... but I find myself leaning more towards soft classic. I am enjoying also more color than I used to and I definitely found that I prefer navy to black. Also I learned and experimented how much footwear can change or elevate an outfit. Thanks again for your work ! Thank you for sharing it with us ! Thank you for your activism ! Kisses and hugs from Marseille, France.
