Agreed!
August 1, 2024 marks the end of my no-buy year. I've been working two jobs for several years, plus I've had part-time jobs on the side, and I had credit card debt, 0 savings... So I decided not to buy clothes, jewelry, hair and face care products, books, stationery for a month. I spent all my money on these things, and I didn't even use a third of them, I didn't read books, and I had 70 hair care products - how long does it take to use them up?)) In short, I liked my no-buy month, so I extended it to a no-buy year. During this time, I paid off my debt, saved some money, donated a lot of clothes, books, and other things, and used a lot of the cosmetics I already had. There were times when I couldn't resist buying something, but in fact, for a whole year it was very little - I bought 4 books, a handbag, and about 2-3 pieces of clothes in a second-hand store. Now waiting to start my second no-buy year)))
Congratulations! That's so major
I’m still working thru my shampoo & conditioner & all of my hand soaps & bathing soap ~ for me (both liquid & bar). I got all of the shampoo & conditioner when my son was 3 or 4 (he’s now 10) when Beauty Brands went out of business here in Oklahoma, so we’re talking BIG LITERS of each. I think I spent around $500 or so & most were 70%-90% off!!! & yes, I’m STILL going through it all. Granted I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week but that’s because it’s just healthier not to over wash it but still… 😂 Once you get your stuff all together organized & realize what you REALLY HAVE & HOW MUCH OF IT 😂 then you have to figure out what to do with it. & I’m too cheap to give the stuff I will actually go through away.
Wow!! Such an inspiration.
Soo proud of your hard work!
Congrats
watching every video on this concept to convince myself AND MY SUBCONSCIOUS that i don’y need to be spending all this money 😅
I’m about to do my first no spend month this June ! How was your experience?
And to answer your "did I fail?" Question I provide this quote I saw today!
"If you attempt anything meaningful in your life, you will fail, guaranteed. The question is, will you quit?"
Success is not the absence of failure or mistakes. Failure is PART OF reaching for success. Have a great day!
I use a separate email for any emails that I sign up for just for the coupons/discounts. I turn off the notifications for that email and just check it when I make a purposeful decision to shop there.
Genius idea
📝
I like this a lot! I was thinking the other day about how marketing is so similar to an abusive relationship, where someone else is trying SO hard to manipulate you into giving up something you have (money). I agree with what you said at the 4 minute mark - there's nothing wrong at all with buying new things as long as YOU are the one making the decision consciously, and you're not being manipulated or lulled into making a decision without thinking.
such an apt analogy
You succeeded. I need to try something similar. Since the pandemic my online shopping has increased significantly and I struggled to stop. Even as I click ‘submit order’ my inner voice is saying do I really need this…
Me too!! 🙃🥲😫
I realized that the ways I coped during the pandemic need to be unlearned now that we're outside in full force again
This video was so relatable for me! Thank you for reminding me that failures are ok, and not feeling like I’m the only one who commits to a low-buy, only to mindlessly buy something! 😂
I relate to so many of your triggers!! This was super validating to hear your perspective. I was also searching for more bipoc creators to learn from bc literally 90% of “no spend low spend” content is made by wealthy white women. I’m so glad I found your acct!
I'm a po white woman you would never think I 😢had a pennie why you say this
I love how you discovered yourself through your low buy. I’m starting a low buy in 2024 but have been in the mindset of a low buy since August. I’m excited to see where it takes me.
You got this!
Happy to have found this video…I’m currently on a no spend and boy it’s been interesting so far..before I spent money on books, bags, accessories, and more stuff.
Also I am a huge fan of Snoopy and love your sweatshirt!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I consider your minimal spending summer a complete success! It’s amazing what can happen once it’s realized that shopping and buying has become a habit that needs to be curtailed. My daughter has been on this journey for over a year now and is getting her finances in order. She’s in a much better financial situation than she was last year when she had more debt than money. It’s hard to stop paying attention to what influencers hawk on their channels. I’ve learned to ignore most of the hauls, etc because I can’t wear most of what they are showing due to severe skin allergies. But, every once in awhile, I’ll see something that gives me the ‘I Wants’. It’s hard not to rush to buy it.
You are not alone in capsule wardrobes being a path to secret spending. I realized that I am ten times more likely to go on a buying binge if I’m focus on trying to build a capsule wardrobe
No I definitely feel this. I'm definitely getting more intentional about what I buy. "Will I actually use or wear this? Do I actually like this or is it just because it's cheap or on sale? Can I plan out a new outfit immediately with this item?" If I hesitate or can't answer these questions, then I won't get it.
Great self accountability system
I don't think you failed at all. You may have not reached all you expectations but you put in the effort and disciplined yourself! This video is very important to me because it made me realize my bad spending habits and how i lie to myself so i can purchase more and more things.
Thank you so much!
This video came right on time! “Impulsive” is my middle name 🤦🏾♀️.. you did amazing! 🥰💙
Yay! Thank you!
@@ALove4Me 🥰
And on cue, the Ulta & Temu ads play 😂😂😂. I really enjoyed this content. Yes, you succeeded. For one, the goal was not deprivation. Two, you gained wisdom and introspection even in the "oops" realizations. Additionally, sharing the oops heightens your accountability moving forward. truly appreciate your methodical approach instead of just saying, "I on a no buy" in general and without a measurable plan of action. Thank you for sharing jewels that I will certainly apply, such as the unfollowing/unsubscribing from traps & triggers in the forms of hauls, under 40, and other advertisements. I can always depend on you for practicality 💯💪🏾🤓
Thank you so much! Your comment drove home the main point of this exercise. Thanks for the reminder that perfection is not required.
I don’t think purchasing a few items makes it a failed attempt. I really think that completely cutting yourself off is a mistake.
The best thing I’ve ever done is unsubscribe from all the emails and turn off app notifications!
Well done ❤
I needed to be reminded of this soooo bad! lol My impulsive shopping was definitely out of control this summer and I lost focus of my long term goals for saving towards my relocation plans. Getting back on track as we speak. Thanks Achia 👍🏾👍🏾
I totally understand veering off the path you set for yourself. This definitely helped me get on track with saving my One Month Fund.
ah i loved this video so much. thanks for the honesty! I'm doing a replacements-only no-buy year, and I also bought stuff three times now without even stopping to think. the capsule wardrobe lie is so so so accurate too. and I really wanted to hug you when you said that the expenses on experiences are what keep us from being lonely - so so true! and such valuable insight. I buy all this stuff to make myself feel more perfect/"appropriate" and LOVABLE when in fact none of the stuff will ever love me back.
You 100% succeeded. One item a month, you rocked it. I've been doing low spends but books are my downfall as well. You have a TBR shelf. I have a TBR closet. Thankfully 90% thrifted. After the holidays I plan on a no spent. Definitely will have enough reading material. 🤞😉😊
😂 I will never judge a fellow book lover
I'm starting a no buy for the rest of this year, this was very helpful! I always joke that I store all my books at the library. 📚
Glad it was helpful!
I love that you posted about this! Clearly I am a little late but I have been interested in doing a No Spend/Low Spend year to deal with some on my impulse buying or spending to "fix my problems"
Thank you! I'm doing the same thing starting today. I have everything I need for myself for at LEAST a month, so I'll start there and extend to 3 months as it is feasible. My boyfriend said he would do the same thing. No buying for ourselves for 1-3 months.
Smart! That 's what I did. I started with 30 days and realized that I could and should keep going. Y'all got this!
I would recommend for books to go to your local library,it saves you money and once you read it you can return it back. If you end up liking the book and could see yourself reading it again then you can purchase it.
I loved this video . I am a senior and love fashion. I have much more than enough for my simple retired lifestyle. I am addicted to fashion and influencers. I actually stopped a holiday movie last night- " Holiday in Handcuffs" because I loved the cable knit sweater like zippered hoodies that the mom character was wearing , to google them. I tried for about 10 minutes, gave up and went back to finish the movie. Have to stop my clothes cravings.
You definitely succeeded💯, especially because you now know your triggers. My issue has been subscriptions to so many things... I just started going through them all and seeing what is actually necessary & getting rid of those that aren't.
yes everything is a subscription nowadays. I was looking at that 8 sleep thing that all the influencers are talking about and it is an subscription service too. The base price was like $3000 and if you want the thing to work you have to pay another $25 to get is to work smdh. These brands keep trying.
Thank you for mentioning that your spending aligns better now with your values. I am about to start a 6-month no buy and hadn’t considered that. Honestly, that concept will likely be one of the strongest guiding forces that get me through! ❤
You got this!
I love the tip about spending according to your values! I'm gonna take that with me (:
I don’t think you failed at all! I think you learned so much from this experience, even the impulse purchases. And you gained so much awareness, therefore, you succeeded!
I like this video I’m going to try this for three months. I really want to save more money. Thanks for sharing.
You learned and made changes!!! I found myself getting caught up and realized I had clothes from COVID which still had the tags on them. That was an eye opener for me and I made changes!!
It’s wild how much COVID continues to affect our lives
Girl you NEED to look into your local library scheme if you want to spend less on books. You can get physical books ebooks and audiobooks from your local library and if you don’t like or finish it who cares it’s free. The library saves me SO much money and is a whole hobby in itself
Girll u are so real!! I’m in the same phase trying to minimize spendings, focussing on quality, longevity and meaningful things. Pls keep this going
thanks for watching!
Anything learned is a success! Way to go. Proud of you! 🔥
I only buy necessities. Pay the bills. I’m a single mother. So what people are calling a challenge is how I live.
Honest , to the point and absolutely lovely ! Amazing video
This video was SO helpful, frank, down to earth. Excited to do a low buy month.
Glad it was helpful!
You keep going. Ty for your honesty, I resonated with what you said.
Came across your video today. Your honesty is inspiring. I need to reassess and realign my No/Low Buy Year habits. Thank you! 😊
THanks for watching!
Loving the snoppy sweater and thanks for sharing this video
This summer I was saving for college, and I noticed I was too tempted to rationalize things like "oh it's for a birthday gift" "oh I've always wanted this" "oh" "oh" until I saw how those all added upp and how nice that would be in my savings instead, and finally went "oh..."
I allotted myself $75 for the whole summer, let everyone know, and included every discretionary expense for it. Even if I wanted to go a free event, so long as it wasn't mandatory like work or school, I included the cost of parking and took it from my $75. Any food I ate out, any snacks I bought, all of that was taken from discretionary spending. I literally became the "we have food at home" parent but to myself ❤ I couldn't justify large purchases with $75 for the whole summer. To me, $15 became a HUGE purchase, and I really thought about what I was doing😮😮 An easy dinner or meal I would've eaten became waiting to eat at home. It was honestly such a slay for me, and I basically hit 5k in savings (again, if I had controlled spending sooner it could've easily been 6k imo, which is massive difference when you make a low wage).
Anyways, totally agree with the sentiment of this video!! I'm actually investing in retirement now at 18 like I always wanted, I have a savings fund, and I looked forward to self auditing and taking care of my life.
Nice job making good choices early in life!
I started going to the library for books!
I've been impulsive buying and impulsively binging social media and streaming. It's a hard habit to break after the breakdown my my marriage and mental health. I've given myself another goal to focus on now which involves building health and building wealth. If it's not contributing to my health or wealth why am I buying it/investing my time into it?
Sometimes you need a coping mechanism when going through very stressful moments in life, so don't forget to give yourself grace
I love that you did this and was intentional and noticed where you could improve. Very positive!
thank you for watching!
I needed to hear this. My birthday is coming up and I wish I could go stay in a hotel somewhere, but because of my impulse spending I won't be able to do that.
Good on you for recognizing limitations you unintentionally put on yourself
I love your video! I had to subscribe because I rarely see other sistahs participate in the movement. Also you're in Atlanta, so that's amazing! I appreciate your honesty about your journey, and I don't believe you failed because you learned so much from your journey.
Thanks for subbing!
You did not fail, you had a few mishaps, but look at all the stuff you did not buy...
This I call Wisdom
I love this video. The influencer community is getting wack lol especially when you grow up and value money, I don’t even call myself a influencer anymore but just a content creator because I don’t want to keep influencing people to spend their hard earned money.
I totally get you
Thank you for this video I’m starting a no buy challenge myself this month to save money to replace the guitar that was stolen from me and to realign myself with my values. I feel trapped, as many of us do, and I want my life back. Congratulations on your journey, I did subscribe to your channel 🌷🫶🏻
You can do it! and thank you for subscribing!
This is a GREAT video! You succeeded in my eyes. Even tho you purchased 3 things it was much less than you would have purchased had you not went on that journey. I find myself in a lot of what you said. I track my expenses and spend way too much on groceries and personal. I make a list for the store and still buy more lol....and it's just me here! And me and Amazon are BFF so I spend too much there also. I'm going to try this for September and see how I do. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
this is such an important video. thank you
I'm Red, and I'm a beauty junkie! I love buying skin care and beauty products 😮even when I don't need it!! I'm broke. 😢
I like your sincerity
Wow! Thanks, I needed to hear that because it is just ridiculous how many clothes are in my closet, with tags on them.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm encouraged! Good for you :)
Yay! Thank you!
yes it's totally addictive to use up products! then not to replace the tertiary or auxiliary products we don't really need 😁
Where is your Snoopy jumper/sweater from? I absolutely love it! I've definitely started doing no-spend weeks. I also keep 0% at home as I no longer drink, so if I ever feel like it, I'll pop one of those open!
It's old from Zara
The saved money can be put towards the mortgage ;)! WOW
I truly needed to find you and your content. Thanks so much!!
Happy to help!
I love that Snoopy sweatshirt. Where from?
I am so glad I found your channel through AfrickanHairGod. Life is different when you are 40+ so I appreciate a RUclipsr with substance.
Thank you for sticking around! I bought the sweatshirt from Zara a year or two ago
This was really inspiring and insightful! Thank you very much for putting this out there.
Awesome and very inspiring video!!!!! Thank you 🎉
So glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, I need to try, only purchase necessities and read the 📚 I already have also.
You can do it!
All great advice
New subbie here!!! Really enjoyed your video.
Thanks for subbing!
imo, congratulations!!! you were highly successful!! You gained more clarity and joy (in parts thanks to noticing your 'mistakes')...
Thank you so much!!
Omg….. I needed this video. Thank you 🙏🏾
No problem 😊
Excellent video thank for sharing
I'm glad you liked it!
❤❤yay!!!!! No amazon. Me too
You have to get a library card, sis!!
Success! I need to follow your lead! Great video!
Thank you!
Books is my thing too haha
I think you succeeded. I need to do this too. I've been influenced in the best way!
Wonderful!
I plan to do a no buy year in 2025 but I’m gonna stock up on essentials like laundry detergent, beauty/healthcare products to last for awhile so I don’t need to spend money besides food & bills
Yeah but don’t. It’s FUN to use things up completely and run out, when you’re used to clutter and stockpiles.
Ok I have to do this too 😭 starts June 2024
How did it go?
Wow I love this
There's a beautiful children's book called Ox Cart Man about a colonial farmer going to the market annually, he brought home a pot for his wife, a needle for his daughter, a knife for his son, and a pound of peppermint candy. I love reading it, I'd like to live it..
Thanks for sharing!
I live this way anyway because I have a mortgage and student loans. I can go a few years without buying clothes. I don’t drink or smoke. It actually amazes me that people shop as much as they do. If my clothes fit me, why buy more? I don’t get my hair or nails done either. I don’t buy jewelry either. I watch TikTok for entertainment. Social media is entertainment for me.
to each their own
I don’t even buy stuff and I loved this video!
Thank you so much!
i'm gonna try this
I never buy clothes, shoes, coats, purses, wallets, makeup. Love lots $$ instead.
Good for you
Scythe is sooo good! Read that series 😊
Will do!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
“That’s just the fiction” lol 😂
no buy awesome when your in a country that barely takes u.s. debit and credit cards lol. thanks for the vid!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
I'm an impulsive buyer especially earrings perfumes and groceries for recipes 😢😢. I don't want that anymore 😊
I totally get you. I encourage you to learn your triggers so that you can start to actively decide when to purchase
The library is your friend.
😂yes the books I agree
Great video
Thanks!
You were successful :)
I bought a book in 3 years and felt it was a waste of
Interesting
Your tax $$$ support libraries. I stopped buying books a long time ago when I came to this reality!
I was going to say the same thing
Great minds think alike!@@confessionsofajadedoptimist
I love libraries too
so what did your friends and family think? so common for family do side eye you while you gain a fat retirement/bank account and their drowining.
everytime i hear capsule wardrobe, lol.....that was a store called casual corner back in the day for the modern 80'-902s working woman.
I didn't tell them and they didn't notice
👍🏻🛎️🙂
Hello
Do you want intro outro banner 💜
Nah, but thanks
I unsubscribe from these ad emails then they wait a few months and start up all over again. Uggh
It's so frustrating! I know I unsubscribe and end up having to do so again and again.
I just paid all the bills.. 😅I'm not spending no money [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅]😅😅
