    I recently checked my retirement account online before I went to a box store with someone. I hadn’t been in these stores for years because I used to stress shop as a pleasurable activity. Staying away from stores that had non essentials has been key to my happy minimalist lifestyle. It served as an anchor when I felt the pull to pleasure buy. Saying to myself how many hours of work that would cost was also helpful. Years of pleasure bargain shopping put my retirement way behind. I denied my addiction by saying it was all an incredible bargain. 🤦‍♀️for decades

      Love the idea to check an investment account or something that helps motivate you and remind you why it's worth it before going to a store like that 😊 I think avoiding these shops in general and sticking to the ones that just have the things I need will be really impactful for me too!
      Years of spending on things here and there has put me behind as well. But making those needed changes this year and working hard to shift my mindsets and emotions around spending. ✨

    I notice when Im focused on works, cooking and hobbies and dont go to stores i can really spend very little. Online shopping jas made it a bit harder. ❤but avoid places where you tend to spend mindlessly: like sales or tempting stores that tent to trigger you❤

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah such great advice! Online shopping definitely makes it a bit harder since it's so quick and easy to buy things online. But knowing when that mindless spending might happen and trying to avoid those stores or sites can really help! 😊

    My tip for people wanting to do a low buy year, would be to not buy physical items that you can bring home and clutter up your space with as a starting point, so if your out and need a pick me up you could get a coffee or snack so it can give you that little boost you need without spending a small fortune. Then after a while this habit could be dropped once your use to not buying physical things all the time.

      Love that idea, thanks so much! 🤍 Doing this no buy challenge this year has been so eye opening to my habits and mindset about spending and items. A lot more difficult than I thought it would be, but so thankful for all the amazing support and advice from everyone 😊

    I did a low-buy year in 2023 which was mostly successful. What it did was point out the areas that were my weaknesses. So, for 2024, I am doing a no-buy year. My worst overspending was on books, so this year... NO new books! I have lots to read and could get in the habit of using the library. My other problem was overspending when I shopped online. I was usually buyiing groceries or vitamins and would order extra random things just to get up to the "free shipping" threshold. So for 2024.... NO online shopping. I have been able to find everything I need in actual stores locally this month, so I don't think this will be a problem.

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад

      Congrats on a successful low buy year in 2023! 😄 Love that you were able to learn so much and take that into this year! Yes, same here when it comes to online shopping! It's so easy to just add some extra things here and there to get free shipping or because it's on sale or they recommend it. Trying to avoid Amazon for a while because it's just too easy to buy extra stuff on there haha! Love the idea of trying to get things locally at stores first before trying the online route 👍

      I second the library!! I've saved so much money. My library actually prints a "receipt" when you check out materials and shows you how much money it would've cost you to buy the same things. I love checking out movies as well as books.

    • @user-xz9my3si5w
      @user-xz9my3si5w 9 месяцев назад

      To avoid the free shipping trap I also fall for constantly, I've been getting into online stores that have a "Pick up" option! That way I can get the most of one item I want being on sale, and if there aren't any available stores for pick up nearby my daily routes it's also an opportunity to discover new places and go on a little trip within the city.

    Hi, there! New subscriber here! You wanna know what I heard in this video? Someone *taking responsibilities* for her actions! *GOALS* moving forward, and putting in place plans of actions!!! THATS AMAZING!!!! I'm only virtually yelling in caps bc I'm so excited you're starting your journey. Sometimes, for a lot of us, we were not taught frugal habits. It's not that our parents were lazy or bad parents, its just that.....well, they didn't really know either. Turns out they're just Mary & Tom from the block trynna get through the day. Yano?
    I think I'm in my 3rd year, roughly. I, also, am an impulse shopper extreme. I hated seeing my bank account everyday & now it's a place I actually LIKE to visit :D Like, it gives me motivation to see my progress.
    Teaching yourself discipline & contentment w/ what you have is SO important & I am SO proud of you for starting! Some quick tricks:
    Groceries: Consider curbside pick up. Someone else does your grocery shopping & you don't gotta fight the crowds. Order from the comfort of your home. Changed my life.
    I use cash envelopes. I never buy w/o money I don't already have.
    Picture whatever item you're trying to buy. Physically put the money in your hand and ask yourself.....do I want the money? Or do I want this item?
    Keep a donation box in every room. I LOVE throwing stuff out & in the box. It's a game. You can keep score.
    Create 15 minute cleaning sprees throughout the day so that it doesn't become overwhelming all at once.
    Ohmygosh, I sound like a know-it-all LOL I'm so sorry. But look, you are doing so well! Most people never even try!
    Did you know most Americans don't even have a $1000 emergency budget? Can you imagine!?
    Let that be your motivation. It is mine!
    Okay, I'm done. Sorry I wrote a book :D But hey! We all start somewhere. You are on the right track :) Keep going!

      Aww thank you so much, you are so sweet! Yes, after years of ignoring the issues and being to scared finally taking accountability and realizing that I got myself into this situation and I can absolutely get myself out of it and into a much better one! 👍
      I've spent so long being scared to look at my bank account and stressed or overwhelmed by the debt but now taking it head on and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. Can't wait to get to the place of being excited to see my account every day and so encouraged and motivated by all the progress and amazing support and love from everyone! 😊
      Absolutely LOVE your tips and going to try those! I think they are going to be game changers! Thanks so much for your incredible comment, loved reading it and so thankful for the support and encouragement! 💖

    Great tips! I'm doing a mix of no buy and low buy for the first few months of this year. The "use up what you have rule" combined with the "take inventory" tip make the biggest difference for me. I feel you with the candles. Last year I did a candle no buy and it took me almost a year to go through my candle inventory! My focus category right now is lotion off all types. Inventory really opened my eyes to how much I already have and now I have the mental rules in place to put off buying more of it.

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад

      So glad those tips were helpful and made a difference! They have been big ones for me! 😊 Ok glad I'm not the only one with a giant candle stash lol! Before trying this low buy year, I didn't realize how much inventory I had of things like candles, skincare, and food products that I need to use up. Excited to see how the year goes and work my way through all those candles haha! 😂

    I found with shopping, the best way for me is to go to grocery stores that only sell groceries/home necessities. Helps me not spend on anything unnecessary. (So no Target, no Wal-Mart.)
    Now I’m so obsessed with saving my money, I have to force myself to buy things I actually need lol.
    I also have no credit card debt, and have figured out how to use my credit cards for all my expenses to get cash back/points. I only buy things that I can pay for right them and there, so I immediately pay off my credit card as soon as the purchases processes to make sure I don’t get charged any interest.

      @LMicFin6224 such great ideas and tips, thanks so much! Love the idea of paying off the credit card right away (not just once a month or the minimum) to avoid the interest and debt that it can bring 😊 I'm definitely going to try that!

    I just paused a membership I’ve been thinking about pausing lately after listening to you, thank you for helping give me that push!
    I’ve been budgeting since 2013 and used to be so obsessed with it so I tweaked it and developed it for years until I finally figured out the best system to always stay ahead. Save up enough money you need in a month, then transfer it over to use when you start a new month and use that amount as your budget (zero based budget). Then keep track of how much you make during that month and boom! That’s the money you have for the next month’s budget. (What you make in January = February’s budget) but you have to save first before starting it that way so you don’t fall behind.
    I love to move my plants around as decor 🪴 I love your plant with the lights in the corner!

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад +2

      Aww I'm so glad this was helpful and able to give you that push to pause that membership! 😊 I've gotten so much great value and ideas from videos that other creators made on this topic and hope this video can add to that 💖
      Such a great point about zero based budgeting! I spent years trying to find the best system and tweaking and obsessing over my budget until I found the same things and also found that in order to make it sustainable and something I can stick to and keep up with, I need to keep it simple and not overcomplicate my budget (which isn't easy since I tend to overthink and overcomplicate things 😂).
      Yes, love moving my plants around too! 🪴 Aww thanks so much, I think I like it too and will keep it there for now 🌴

    Love these tips! The part about planning is so on point. For the last year or so, my boyfriend and I have used a white board on our fridge that tells us what to use up. So those items are front and center, and it reminds us to use what we have.

    I’m doing a low buy year and it’s going amazing so far! Writing out my “why” and my guidelines has been super helpful. Also, surrounding yourself with like-minded people can be very helpful. I have low buy allies at work, home, with family, and with friends.
    Right now my siblings and I are doing a pantry challenge where all your meals come primarily out of your pantry, fridge and freezer. This challenge has helped us spend a minuscule amount on food in January, and we’ve eaten like kings, with homemade corn tortillas, bread, English muffins, bagels, rolls, pita bread, so many simple delicious meals with rice, veggies, and beans cooked from dried.
    I just increased my retirement contribution to the max for my age ($30,500) and I’m going to aggressively start paying down my mortgage.
    I love being super intentional about what I spend money on, what comes into my home, and what leaves it.
    For me, the most important thing is having a compelling why. My why is so clear and so powerful to me, and that’s making all the difference compared to past attempts at reducing consumption and spending.

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  9 месяцев назад +1

      Wow that is so incredible, I'm so encouraged and inspired by what you are doing! 😄 You are so right that having your "why" and letting that guide the decisions. Love that you have such an amazing support system as well! That is something I'm working on building and finding in this new city 🤗
      Love that pantry challenge idea! My husband and I did that a couple months ago and need to do that again!
      Thank you so much for all the amazing tips and inspiration and so excited to see what 2024 has in store for us all in this challenge! 💖

    Great video. I really love declutting and I’m getting to the point where I can almost say, I’m a minimalist. Its feels great and it has given me more sanity, money, and quality of life. I just want to affirm your points. If you can get a hold of one corner of your life, the next corner is easier. Small steps, make habits, know what you have, think about what you really need and what triggers your purchases, reuse, save your money to buy quality and, always take the wins no matter how big or how small. Again, great video.

    Great video. Thanks for the tips. I’m doing a low buy 2024 too so your tips are very helpful
    I’ve been journaling the low buy wins and lessons. And when I say journaling, I mean that I’m using Google Docs for free. It is a low buy year after all, so I decided NOT to buy yet another pretty notebook (Notebooks are definitely an area of weakness! Lol)
    I’ve been quite an emotional spender in the past. Documenting the process (what I bought, what I didn’t buy, what I was feeling, what kind of day I was having etc) has been very insightful. When I “slip up” I document an alternative approach for the next time, I find myself in a similar situation.
    I’m already amazed at my accomplishments for the year so far! Looking forward to what the rest of the year will bring

      That is such a great idea to document everything and what you are feeling when you buy or don't buy something and have that info to look back on for situations. So excited for what you have accomplished and definitely keep me updated on how the rest of the low buy year is going! 🙌

    I didn't even know that a term for this existed! My two biggest spending are books and coffee. The rule is that I'm not allowed to buy any new books. If I want to read, I have more than enough on my bookshelves. And if I didn't like it or didn't even finish it, I'm putting it into one the public bookshelves that are popular in my town. Those are also the only place I can get new books. The other big thing is coffee. For this year (aside from like coffee meet-ups with friends or studying at a café or sth similar), I'm only allowed to get coffee from home or from work (it's free!). I can bring a travel mug but tbh, I've never used it this last month. Not only do I save money, I also drink less and I sleep better!
    A thing that really helps me is a finance tracker on my bujo. I start with listing my income and then any monthly payments that stay the same, like rent or a netflix subscription. I total up the amount I have left, and from that, I'm taking a set amount of money that goes into my savings account. The leftover sum is the budget for the rest of the month. Before, I always spent the budget and barely had anything left at the end of the month to go to my savings. And another handy trick I found for me is a no spending calendar. Each day I haven't bought anything gets colored in and on days that I spent money, I write the total amount of that day in. For each month, I have a certain number of no spending days that I want to reach. This month it was 10 (which I reached!), so this month it's going to be 11. Colouring a small box each evening is something I really look forward to xD

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад

      Oh my gosh I LOVE all these tips and ideas! 💖 Yeah books and coffee have been big ones for me as well, so this year I mentioned in my no buy year video that I am only using the library for book and the Libby app for free audio books! And with getting coffee out or eating out I can only do with friends like you mentioned rather than just stopping by there on my own all the time. Helps me cut down on spending, caffeine, and makes me want to plan more meet ups with friends! 😊
      So true, starting out with putting money into savings is key or else there never seems to be any left at the end of the month. My husband and I have started doing that this year as well and starting off with putting the amount we need in savings and then budgeting with what's left
      I really liked that no spend calendar idea where you color in the days and list the amount spent on days where you did spend! I'm a visual person and having that somewhere I can see and fill it out each day would keep me motivated and be something to look forward to! 🙌 Thanks so much!

    I didn’t realize I was already doing a lot of these things you mentioned! Another one I like to do is making a list of “no buy” items in my phone so I can refer back to them and know that I absolutely have enough of that item in my inventory and don’t need any more. And I think going to the store and exercising that willpower of appreciating the pretty things and then leaving without purchasing is like a muscle that we have to work out every so often! It’s a skill. I’ve gotten much better at it, and I’d consider myself an impulse shopper sometimes in TJ Maxx or Target 😅 we can do this!

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  9 месяцев назад

      Yay love that we are doing it together! Really like that idea of having a "no buy" list of items on my phone. Just made a list to remind myself! 🤍 You are so right about going to those stores and building up that will power being like a muscle. The last couple of times I have been in stores or shops where I normally would be tempted to get things I was able to appreciate it but leave without buying anything since I didn't need any of it. Felt so good and excited to keep building the low buy muscles haha! 😄

    Hobby Lobby is one of my favorite stores. I get a rush of dopamine just being in the store, lol. I've begun leaving my wallet in my vehicle if I'm not in need of something, or just take whatever amount of cash in that I'm willing to spend. The idea of having to walk back to my truck to get my card is enough to deter me from impulse buying.
    Having a specific thing that you want to save for helps as well. I want a racecar, so anytime I think about buying something I always ask myself if I need it. If not, I don't buy it, because...RACECAR.

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад

For me it's living abroad in Portugal with my husband, so I'm trying to remind myself of that amazing life goal we have planned whenever I want to spend money on something else 🤍

    4:38 um yes because there’s are so many accounts/influencers that just buy more and more unnecessary stuff and then I end up scrolling through Amazon. And yes TJ Maxx is my weakness 😂

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад +1

      Oh my gosh I know! Amazon is just so quick and easy and WAY too tempting for me, so I try to just avoid using it 😂 and TJ Maxx with the cute home stuff and candles, another weakness for me too haha! But I found not going online or to those stores makes such a big difference. Helps to not constantly see all those things I don't need! 😊

    I like your video I would love to shop my closet but I have gained weight and have tried to only buy a few things for my new body but the quality of the items that I have purchased are not the best so I now have to re-buy good quality pants and jeans.

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад +1

      I totally know where you're coming from! I did a closet declutter video a few weeks ago and a lot of the clothes I decluttered were because I have gained some weight in the past year as well and no longer fit a lot of my favorite pieces. I realized I have been buying low quality items as well so as I'm working on finding higher quality pieces that I love to replace them in the future 😊

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  10 месяцев назад

    Im currently on a mission to save up my emergency fund so my rule is that I will only buy 1 item (this year) that I actually need or want (like earphones or a lamp or smt like that) and Im am only allowed to attend one social (paying) event per month.
    Also no more books untio I read everything that I have.
    Clothes I have enough.
    So reallly stick to the basic necessity and not getting carried away with how fast people tend to spend money.
    Its very hard but as I keep track of my expenses and saving its highly motivating and rewarding!!!

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  9 месяцев назад +1

      Love your list and that you have a goal to keep you motivated for it! 🤗 Yeah I’m finding in the first couple months it’s been really challenging, but so worth it and crazy to realize how much I was spending without thinking about it! Excited to see what we can all accomplish this year with this challenge together 💖

    • @Mariamasmagnet
      @Mariamasmagnet 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@SamanthaRae. totally!! and once your start you never go back to the crazy spending. I think winning money is very necessary and you usually trade your time for that so for me it makes no sense that people spend it like crazy without being concious of where their money is going. But it's never too late to learn and keep improving our spending habits! And the relationship with money overall haha THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEO!

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Mariamasmagnet so true! I can tell my thought process, habits, and mindset have already changed so much and looking back can't believe all the crazy and thoughtless spending I was doing in the past ☹ But you are so right that it's never too late to start and continue learning and improving! 💖

    • @Mariamasmagnet
      @Mariamasmagnet 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@SamanthaRae. For sure! Even if you are concious you will make mistakes because that happens to me and to everyone that is in a financial journey towards their goals!
      For example, yesterday night I was craving macdonalds and I was like ok maybe with the coupons I can spend less than 10 swiss francs (I live in Switzerland) but then I checked my bank account at the moment and saw that last week I had MC and I didnt even remember it LOL. So I was like girl, get your ass home, you have food and you can cook!!! HAHAHAHAHHA and just today I got invited to an event that costs 10fr so im extremely happy that I didnt follow that impulse and that now I can afford that event that will be much more interesting and enjoyable than a burguer and fries.
      But also on the other hand, I went to the supermarket and bought something that wasnt on my list, which can be bad (for me) if I do it several times but it was something special and I felt like treating myself in that way.
      I know it's a lot of detail but for me it's crazy how our brain works and how powerful it is to actually think before jumping into the action!

    • @SamanthaRae.
      @SamanthaRae.  9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Mariamasmagnet yep I'm right there with you! It's been so crazy to just change my mindset and realize how often I would just spend and buy things without thinking about it! I definitely have not followed all the rules or goals I set up perfectly, but it's made such a difference and I am so much more mindful or what I do choose to spend on now 😊

    My only original advice : I tend to only buy clothes when I feel like I have plenty money and could easily finish the month even if I bought a certain sum of clothes. The solution I came up with : Everytime I am so consumerist that I ask myself the silly question "what could I possibly desire to acquire ?" I promised myself to transfer fifty euros to my savings account 😂
