I usually ask myself if I have anything in my closet that is similar to the items that I want to purchase, if I truly love that piece or I just want to follow the trend, and if that piece is in my budget. I just recently discovered your channel and I love it! Keep up with the good work and have a nice day!!
Zoey Tran thank you Zoey! These are perfect rules! I need to shop my closet some more to deter any temptations I might come across too - it can be fun!
Taking my husband shopping with me. He reminds me that I already have something similar to what I just grabbed and he is picky, he tries to find something negative about the item so I end up not getting it Haha. Funny but it helps me with my shopping habits :)
I’m not ready for no buy just yet but I’ve set up rules when it comes to shopping. For clothes, nothing more than $20 for an item. And I ask my self will I wear this item within a week. As far as makeup the only thing I’m allowed to buy are lashes bc I literally so much makeup.
I try to only buy either ethically produced clothes OR from environment-friendlier materials (organic cotton, Lyocell, Linen, etc.). I simply can't afford many of them, and it hurts my H&M-Teenager-Heart to spend so much on one piece, so I reeaally make sure it's a perfect fit for me :) Works great, bought only 2 pants and 1 skirt so far this year..
When I saw my oldest mimicking my spending habits that was the biggest wake up call. I immediately altered my spending habit. Second wake up call came during the summer when everyone was home from school and I couldn't for the life of me keep up with the dishes, laundry etc. Then it dawned on me the money I was spending on lash extensions could be used to hire a cleaning lady for the summer. Those lashes weren't making a huge impact in my life but that cleaning lady sure did free up a lot of my time!!
Latifah Davis totally agree! Haha I want a cleaning lady too 😂 - but that’s amazing that you recognized that and aimed to set an example for your kids. Totally inspiring! Xo
“Looking for something to want”. Yes, that is definitely the issue! If you stop yourself from browsing stores, it really does help curb your “cravings”. It’s so hard with social media but it’s helpful to remind yourself of that sinking feeling you get when you get something new, the excitement wears off, and you reluctantly hang it up in your closet feeling like garbage and like a failure.
I lost 100 pounds and went from an eating disorder to a shopping disorder. My biggest issue is watching influencers on you tube. Glad to find yours. Great steps and points.
Me too. I had to replace my entire wardrobe and from buying nothing I've gone a little mad. So it stops right now. I'm making my rules now and unsubscribing.
I stopped shopping/ spending a lot of money on stuff after watching Minimalism on Netflix. That documentary hit me so hard and got me (back) to reality! Since then I am so much happier. I never been in debt because of shopping. The only debt I got is student loan and that’s thankfully not very much as I studied in Germany. After finishing college I sold everything I’ve owned and travelled, found a new place to live and barely added on my belongings. I feel so free because I no longer spend hours of searching the Internet for new stuff or walking through the city shopping. My whole life shifted and I love to see that other people escape this (over)consumerism!! The Minimalists say “Love people, Use things. Because the opposite never works.”
I didn’t realize I had a shopping problem until you came out with these videos. It’s an emotional shopping problem to get that feeling of being excited for something, and these videos have helped me figure out the problem. Thank you!!
This helped me. It’s interesting seeing most channels on RUclips are basically advertising for their subscribers to purchase something. Difficult to get away from advertising!
Yes!! I heard something about how it’s only saving you money when you were already going to buy it. So when I need to get my children clothes THEN I will look for deals but I avoid looking at the deals so I don’t run out and buy things we don’t really need.
@@raisingbabydiaz this is such a good tip. Because i search for good deals online and at trift stores for now and for future. Which isn't the best behaviour
At the beginning of the video, she says the process was first "finding something you want". She put the exact words on how it feels like, to go window shopping or browse clothing on internet. That sentence is resonating so much for me. We try to find something we want.
It’s so reassuring for me to find that I am not the only one going through this shopping addiction. I never realised that I was addicted - I thought , thanks to the merchandising market, that it was normal to buy new clothes each season. I have recently tried to organise my wardrobe and got rid of bags of clothes, many of which I had never even worn and still had the labels on. Now I have to stop buying more. So thanks for all the good advice. I’m finding that avoiding exposure to clothes shops and catalogues is the best way for me avoid temptation. Thankfully I do not live in a city!
It’s so difficult when shopping is intertwined with mental health stuff and childhood scarcity mentality. Thank you for these videos, they’ve been helpful.
I decided to do this and just came across your videos. 🙏🙏🙏 Oh, and I don’t mind your ‘ bad language’ in your previous video. I found it very mild so couldn’t understand why you apologised. You can’t please everyone, and being authentic is far better to find your own tribe who get you. Just be you! You are inspiring.
Nadja Drobot I’ve seen so many antihauls in my feed - I need to research what they are! Yes shipping your wardrobe is honestly so much fun - I forget that when I get caught up in the “newness”
Congratulations on your journey. Unfollowing influencers can be extremely helpful. I keep in mind that influencing is a job; their way of paying for a home and feeding a family or a side hustle. It’s a job. Thinking of it as a job takes out a lot of the excitement for the new shiny things.
This has been so helpful for me. I have a major shopping problem. Lately, not so much but I am in repair mode. I don’t enjoy fast fashion shopping anymore, but I’ve found transitioning to a capsule wardrobe is actually making me want to addictively shop again because most of my pieces don’t work together and I feel “without” a capsule wardrobe! So easy to get caught up. Thanks for the tips!!
I appreciate you so much! I'm also going through a major budgeting year and the shopping addiction/withdrawals/cravings/crashes are real. No one close to me is doing this, so it's really hard to go to an shared office with 10 women and see them show off their lunch hour hauls and stay motivated. So thank you, sister! Additionally, I've been loving your styling videos over this period. It's really easy to go out, buy a bunch of new, trendy shit and make a styling for summer video, but it takes some real style sense and creativity to restyle our things from previous seasons and make them look fresh. Its brilliant. Its relatable. Its useable content. It takes real thought and fashion sense. Applause!
Great video thank you. I’m further along my no and low buy than you. It took me years to tackle my shopping habit. I did the waiting rule with items. It amazed me how much I forgot about. And for me, I just waited and waited until the item I “wanted forever” got significantly discounted before I purchased. If it didn’t go on sale, I didn’t buy it (even if I wanted it forever), because there are new things all the time. I have discovered that I have never regretted not buying something. It is very satisfying to use stuff up completely, like my Tom ford lipstick. And then my husband bought me another one as a gift because he saw I enjoyed it so much.
You are so honest and amazing. Love your channel. I always shop mostly when I'm stressed and then I buy a little more than I need. There is just this feeling that you have to treat your self in stressfull situations. Its nice that you started a conversation about this topic.
So proud of you doing this AND sharing your journey. It’s time that we stop shaming people here on RUclips. It’s time that we lean from the differences. At the end we all have our weak spots
Hello-I found your channel several months ago, and have been checking out your early videos. I have been on a low buy for about a yr. Your comment “looking for something to want” really hit home. I have gotten soooo much better about scrolling thru my favorite sites. But, it’s a process. Thanks for telling your story.
I have come up with strong reasons to why not buy. Saving for travel, also saving to buy a house. Also, thinking about doing less laundry and having to clean less things, helps me a lot. Filling my days with activities and experiences is key to keep the low buy. If I ever need or want clothes, I go to thrift stores, If I don't find what I need in there, I will re visit the thrift store other day. And for gift cards, only for underwear stores are accepted.
Seriously the low buy saved me. Saved my marriage. My credit card bills were out of control. I saw your videos and you inspired me. Now I tell everyone ! Low buy is the way to go. I have rules around clothes and skin care and books. It is so helpful. I watch this video when I need inspiration. *thank you*
Hey guys! I just wanted to clarify my comment about using credit cards - I still do use credit for certain things (however working on transitioning to 100% cash/debit to better follow Dave Ramsey's teachings on this subject - it's less convenient, but doable) , but my point was that I would NOT allow myself to purchase items that I consider triggering or part of my addiction on credit. By having that hard stop, it makes me more mindful and question if I really am willing to spend the money on the thing or things, and watch my bank account or wallet dwindle in real time at the moment of purchase. This has helped because most of the time, I'm unwilling to pay the money now for it. I hope that makes sense.
I love this video. I have to stop shopping too. Beginning of this year I stopped shopping fast fashion. But I find myself shopping way to many thrifted clothes.. Next challenge will be shopping less of everything 😉 love from Lisette, the Netherlands
I am doing a low-buy year in order to pay back some debt. It’s been 11 days and I am already wanting to buy stuff. Isn’t this crazy? I really need to change my shopping habits. There is no way I cannot go without shopping for 11 days. My closet is full... I think in some way I may have a shopping addiction and going « cold turkey » for a while may be the best way to start this year. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is really helping me do this and also making me feel a little more normal!
I used to have three different wardrobes: Professional. Farm. Casual. When I retired and moved to our very small cottage on our small family farm, I was encouraged to purge my wardrobe as we have done our other possessions to consolidate three homes. My walk in closet is full now but I decided not to purge because it is full of classic pieces that I love. I now create capsules every season by combining items that I would not have worn together before but mix well, look great and are comfortable.I may never have to buy another article of clothing other than undergarments.
Great video! ... Each year, I set a budget for my clothes, shoes and makeup. At the beginning of each year, I make a list on Excel of the things I want or need to buy for that year with the approximate amount I want to spend on each item. So I shop with a purpose. Each month, I report the amount I spent from my credit card statement into my Excel file so I can keep track of how much I spent. We are in June and I found out that I spent half of my yearly budget for clothes but only a quarter of my yearly budget for shoes. So I am OK! If I buy somethins that it is not on my list, I have to let go of something I planned to buy. This system works for me.
Okay thissssssss is an organized dream! And you have DATA to back yourself up and you KNOW exactly where you money has gone or where it's going. I love this so much! I need to do this!
Perfect video, I've been lusting for a Moto jacket the last three years and it finally went on sale because it was something that was missing in my wardrope, thanks for the helpful tips.
I have been enjoying low buy (and similar) content lately. It is so much more satisfying than the constant "needs" haul videos and such create. The latter seem more and more shallow to me. Some of my rules are: - Monthly budget (currently max. 100€ per month which I know is still a lot). - Seasonal decluttering / inventory / writing a shopping list (only writing down items that fill a gap in one way or the other). - Shopping according to the list and trying hard to really stick to it. - Restricting shopping (I only go shopping to find the stuff from my list, i. e. intentional shopping when a new season starts but not randomly or even as a pastime activity; this leaves me with at least half a year not shopping at all which reduces stress). - Restricting the amount I "need". I do my own variation of a Ten Item Wardrobe (by Jennifer L. Scott). I have learned that I don't need more than 10 (+/-) outfits per season. I couldn't even wear all my clothes if I had much more. - Patience. Not following any urge/impulse. Waiting, tolerating the negative feelings. Working through the emotions. I will definitely follow you on your journey. Thank you! 🙏
these are SUCH good rules! I love the ten item wardrobe challenge (I think im gonna try that!) and shopping with lists. that's even so relevant when it comes to things like groceries and other everyday things. patience is key too. we are so used to instant gratification, and that's what i think ruled my "want it now, buy it now" mentality. i could never wait.
I always leave the tags on or keep the box for at least a week or before I actually wear an item and if i don’t wanna immediately wear it its usually a sign that I didn’t need it afterall and I can return it 😊
Thank you for sharing! I started low buy for shoes and clothes since February this year. It's been great to become less tied to the materials in my life and appreciate the things I already own better.
Thank you providing all these specifics. I recently discovered a no buy year and really appreciate you breaking down a low buy & no buy year. This is a realistic approach I can definitely take!
A really genuine, thought provoking discussion of our consumerist society and how it effects us each individually. Sounds like you've found (or are finding) a really healthy way to live.
I think this is great! So like if you like knitting as a hobby, then you sell the blankets or scarves or mittens you made? Great set of rules - love that perspective.
After watching your previous video, I used your tip and unsubscribed from every clothing and cosmetics company in my email, and cut way back on watching influencers. Now, when I do watch them, it is for pure entertainment value, and I have found that I don't even make it through most of the videos on makeup, (which is my biggest triggers for buying), because I'm just not interested. I have been focusing again on health and wellness, which does actually have a positive impact.
YES! I love this! The unsubscribe tip was honestly one of my strongest for me personally - staying out of the "know" honestly was so helpful. Out of sight, out of mind.
I started this year. I stopped shopping completely and it feels good. I’m now only buying the necessities and of course I’m avoiding unnecessary buys I used to tell myself “but they are on sale”. It doesn’t matter anymore. Maybe in the future I’ll buy myself something I really want but I have to really want it. I have goals to have my house paid off first then put as much in savings and retirement. I have plenty of clothing and luxury items. My husband wanted to buy me another LV bag but I said no that I don’t need it. He looked at me like I was crazy and maybe I am lol. Good luck to all of you. Just remember it feels good to have a big savings. Peace of mind
I totally relate to so much here - work in progress for me! I've been a big spender/shopper and am slowly, after years of the rollercoaster, am coming out of it. Thanks for sharing! I am purging and trying to keep to 1-2 items per month, within a budget, and having a plan of what I actually "need"...
You are not alone! I do my best to only use cash. I save my lone credit card for absolute emergencies. This is a sincere upgrade from how I used to operate.
I see the “All Things Must Pass” album in your background ❤️ Very cool. I always need inspiration to keep me from shopping. So far, it’s going ok. Not excellent but good. Thank you for helping us to stay on track. 😊
Kathleen Olszewski that’s all still perfect to me! Mine has not been excellent or even good all the time either - but definitely being more mindful than I was before. That’s all progress to me. And yessss GH ❤️❤️
You are very brave. This video is a game changer...you're helping thousands of people. I am going to put these awesome rules in place TODAY!! Thank you!!!
@13:54 is soooo important! The True Cost documentary on Netflix is really eye opening. Knowing where my clothes came from and where it goes even after I donate it has helped me be more mindful of how I shop.
I really understand how you feel my reason to stop shopping so much is I get sick of trying to pay off a credit card over and over again and again saying g this time I am going to stop so now I am debit free and I refuse to keep other people rich and me being broke. So good for you girl keep up the good work.
Carol Abdullah YES! Me too. I would go in cycles and cycles of racking up a credit card bill, paying it off and then racking it right back up again. I’m so tired of it and tired of being broke. Financial freedom is waiting for us! Xo
My rules for myself are 1.never to use credit. I dont even own a credit card 2. Only shop at high end stores where the quality of the clothes will mean they last for years. Also, because the cost of these clothes is sooo high it takes me ages to convince myself to buy as the pain of parting with $ makes me think twice, three ,four times! I dont even go into fast fashion stores at all any more. I have fewer clothes but I love them and they are classic. 3. Never go shopping of any kind while hungry. 4. I no longer buy gifts for friends, only family and then only at Christmas. I can make a fuss of the people I love without buying them something every week! 5.listing what I am grateful for across all aspects of my life makes me more content and prevents the wanties.
My rule is that I can't have a balance on my credit card by payday. For logistics reasons I do use my credit card but I have to pay it off entirely right after.
I think thats a great rule. I should clarify that I do still use my credit card, but I made a rule that I couldn't use credit to buy all the things that usually feed my addiction like clothing, makeup and skincare.
Excellent video very useful, today is my first day of low buy year and I started because I have discovered your latest video on youtube!!! I am soooo excited because this is one of my New Year resolutions !!! Love your channel!!!! Thank you!
Very interesting video full of practical advice!!! Follows a great deal of French chic rules of less is more, quality over quantity and keep it simple!!! None of us need large closets of clothes because we only wear about a quarter of them!! I have subscribed to your channel, goid job!!!
Spot in! I love that Amazon has wish lists and poshmark lets you like items. I always use those and come back later if I still really want it later. Many times I do not. Helps me so much!
The skincare is tough for me too, esp since lately I've been breaking out like crazy. But remember it takes 4-6 weeks to see any result of any skincare regieme we are using! Stick to what you've got first! lol i need my own advice
For eye shadows and nail polishes that I own that I don't really use, I like to mix shades and create new ones. I have gotten the most compliments doing that because nobody else is going to have the exact same color. Experiment; you were not going to use them anyway, so you have nothing to lose.
Watch the documentary 'The True Cost' on Netflix, it is very helpful to be 'motivated' to shop for clothing in a more conscientious manner. It has changed my 'values' in regards to clothing. I do not want to be using my money to contribute to child slave labor for example so I no longer purchase clothes at 'fast fashion' stores. I also do not want any of my money going to support the company Monsanto/Bayer so I will no longer purchase any clothing made of 'conventional' cotton. I only purchase organic cotton or second hand 'conventional' cotton. I also do not want to support the petroleum based industry (and for my health and the health of the environment) so I do not purchase any clothing items made with synthetic (petroleum/plastic) materials. I find that with these 'values' I am not really tempted to buy most clothing items in most stores. When I look at items I see toxic, environmentally polluting, items probably made by modern day slaves and it 'repulses' me so not very tempted. I purchase most of my clothing second hand and a few items such as undergarments and pjs I purchase in organic cotton or linen by certified fair trade brands. I do not have much money at all and so because organic and slow fashion/fair trade/ethical items are more expensive I only purchase what I really need and what I know I will use for a very long time. I feel so much better now about my shopping habits. I buy so much less and I have more money to do things I really enjoy and that brings more fun, excitement, joy, meaning and purpose to my life. I also have so much less stress and feel so much more gratitude, peace and contentment. Shopping knowing I am not causing harm to myself, other people, creatures, and the environment just feels so good because my values and my decisions actually line up with each other. No guilt , no remorse, no 'justifying'. So much better.
I've been told about this documentary - I'll def need to check it out. It sounds eye opening and like a great motivator to think twice about our current habits of consumption. Thank you for sharing how you've changed your views and where it has brought you. xx Love it!
I love your response! I’ve been wanting to make the switch to more eco friendly and cruelty free clothing. Where do you normally shop for these clothes?
i feel like i've been buying a little more lately even tho i've always been good about using stuff up (yup i finished lipsticks) and giving/decluttering instantly when i know i won't use that thing. so yeah this motivated me to start being more minimalistic again and focus on what i already have and love. thanks!
Thank u fir helping me!!! Ive been doing pretty well so far on my low buy and I practically dont shop at all anymore. Dont even miss it really and it happened so quick
I think for me the goal is to stop buying impulsively, but actually buying those things I actually love, cannot wait to wear and use, which make me feel amazing and would wear over and over again. Instead of a quick fix, a true love.
Rebecca Jones definitely! I love the idea of thrifting but often catch myself still asking if I’m buying bc it’s a good deal of if I really love or need it - that’s the trouble with thrifting and me right now xo
Damn that ”looking for something to want” really hit home for me 👀 Like not even wanting anything but just wanting to want out of boredom or whatever 😵💫
OMG! You have been God sent!! I actually started a no buy in Jan inspired by Hanna Louise Poston which I discovered in late 2018. But, unfortunately I've failed miserably. I also think that it didn't help that she is now on a beauty budget and accepting PR. In addition , I'm actually partially disabled and I spend most of my time im in bed due to pain. (Severe Fybromialgia and anxiety) it's worse. Since RUclips, social media and shopping are my only source of entertainment. I've always been a compulsive shopper but it's become worse. So embarrassing to say I'm now 12K in debt. So I've been struggling yet trying so hard. And in much need of accountability partners. Others that are going through the same thing. Im so glad and blessed to have found you. I needed it so badly so Thank you for sharing your journey. Its great to know that We are definitely not alone and thanks to us teaming up, supporting each other I know we will succeed... Please keep making more videos like these. 👍🏻🙏💞
Kiara Echegaray you’ve got this Kiara! It will take a mind shift and a budget. I highly recommend Dave Ramsey. His plan really helped me get started. Xo
I fell off the wagon this summer :( I am going on a cruise and I was just going to buy a new swimsuit.... and that's all she wrote. I am watching low buy/ no but videos for motivation. Tfs!
This has really hit me, I became disabled and I can’t move around a lot but my online shopping has got out of control I think it’s because it’s something I am I control of if that makes sense. I have recognised what is happening I have some beautiful clothes and clothes shoes, and bags, and I can be a sucker for a bad and always up for a bargain and that triggers me! Watching people’s hauls make me have a look at certain things. Rationally I hardly go out, because I can’t get out alone, so I can’t even wear everything I have got. I only yesterday thought right I have got to point of parcels coming and now I have got to the point of sending stuff back. Because I don’t want it too or even need it. Now I am thinking of a non buying period as well as a decluttering, because I have stuff every where. So I am trying to sell things, donate and more importantly I need to set my low spend no spend rules, and I think I am in need of a goal! To keep me motivated I am thinking of a creating a Chanel, that’s all encompassing low spend/ no spend, boredom and all things like that, but not I repeat NOT hauls!
Lisa Marshall I totally encourage you to start a channel! It’s a great outlet and I think really does help sort out your thoughts, feelings and experiences. We want to hear them! Xo
My biggest problem areas are books and thrifting. Thankfully I live a 2 hour drive from the stores so shopping is much more difficult 😁. Also, I don't shop online because the couriers don't deliver to where I live (I would have to drive the 2 hour trip to pick the package up).
I used to go to primark monthly and spend about €200, - next to coffee/lunch and Sometimes dinner. I am now engaged and have 2 chinchillas and a dog. Meaning a family to be present for. My fiancé doesn't want to be in my video's which I respect. But OMG that Cycle... So familiar to that, with me it came with excuses like, "I need this for... " And then after getting it putting it somewhere in a cabinet. I am starting with a low buy month and will try to make that a year etc etc. Thank you for your advice ☺☕
Everything you are saying is hitting me hard.. I am at a point that I'm embarrassed to tell my boyfriend that my credit card is at and need to change asap... I am saving this video for when I am staying from the no buy low buy path ..
It's actually been interesting - I've noticed what triggers me most is online shopping. When I'm physically in a store, I have noticed I dont have that "excitement" or rush response. I've gone into stores lately to check out recent sales out of bordeom or to kill time for example, and took note that I really felt "nothing" when I went in. So far I haven't had the "alcoholic walking into a bar" type of feeling in physical stores. My issue is online so I will need to tackle that more. So I think shopping with friends so far has been ok if that makes any sense at all!
Having a budget is a game changer! And being realistic about it. Rules: 1. Only ethically and sustainably made or second hand - research what you want to invest in, purchase from brands or designers that care about the materials, the environment, where they come from and who made them. That way fast fashion generally falls out of the picture. 2. Add it to a list - check if you still want it and can afford it at a later date - save up for special items 3. Investment pieces - will it be worn for many years, is it good quality, is it a replacement and will it stay in style? Further questions to ask: - What impact does spending have on my budget, my self-worth and those around me? - Do you need it or just want it? What for? What else could you purchase for the same amount of money - or how much could you add to debt repayments or to savings instead? Strategies that can help with minimising spending and curbing a bad habit: - Face all expenses and debts head on. Work out a plan and a budget. Ask family or friends to help you with tackling the biggest issues first. Read up and inform yourself on how to set goals. - Set up a seperate or multiple accounts with one account dedicated to frivoulous spending with a small weekly/monthly budget (what you can afford) all leisure and shopping comes out of that account and don't touch your other accounts - Make excpetions - for example, allow small spending on certain items or for special occasions (weddings, etc) coffee, fitness, books, etc by prioritising what has real value and what you will use, brings joy - Invest in experiences not things - like making a regular date to meet a friend for dinner or lunch, seeing a film, etc - check your budget daily - small savings can be extremely fulfilling! - don't beat yourself up if you have set-back :) :) :)
A couple things I do are: I put things ins shopping carts and reevaluate in a few days. If I truly want or need it I'll get it but it helps me narrow it down. If it's clothing and I really feel I'm missing something I try to find it at a second-hand shop. I often find better quality for less and it has what feels like a story. It often takes longer which keeps me from just getting something trendy and lets me focus on finding more classic pieces. I haven't done it in a while but one thing my husband and I used to do was budget ourselves 100 dollars each/month for what we called 'guilt-free no questions asked money.' I could spend it on whatever I wanted however frivolous but after it was gone. It was gone. It helped me really slow down and think ok you really want this sweatsuit and you can have it BUT that means no eyelash serum this month or no iced coffees and if it's worth it then get it!
Thanks for the video. It has really inspired me! I always knew I had a problem and your video helped me come to terms with it. Please keep the videos coming!!
I start my no buy for 6 months tomorrow. I decided to do a no buy instead of a low buy because I really don't need anything in the categories that I selected - clothing, books, housewares, makeup/skincare/toiletries. I do have some exceptions, like replacements or emergencies, but I've also incorporated your questions to help me pause and think about what I'm considering buying. How is your low buy going?
Do you have any specific low buy rules?
"....a cycle of looking for something to want, finding it, wanting it, acquiring it, and then doing it all over again". Spot on.
YES! So brilliant. I feel like we ALL resonate with this.
I'm so guilty and I'm not proud of it.
My story dude!!
Xo
lol you’re lame
@@StarseedGirl818 sucks to be sad dezi
And all that spending was on clothes and dishes you ended up having to wash, so it was double hurting you
“Looking for something to want”.
Almost 2 years later and this is still so helpful
agreed. this has helped me so very much
every time i need a refresh on my no buy rules / mindset i come back here. keeps me from temptation
Four years now & I’m glad I found it!
I lost 100 pounds and went from an eating disorder to a shopping disorder. My biggest issue is watching influencers on you tube. Glad to find yours. Great steps and points.
Hi Lisa! im also going through that. Do you have any tips to help you overcome that?
Me too. I had to replace my entire wardrobe and from buying nothing I've gone a little mad. So it stops right now. I'm making my rules now and unsubscribing.
First rule starts at 4:35
Thank you!
Thank you!!
"Shop"from your own wardrobe. Create new combos from what you already own.
so much YES! I need to do this more
Been doing this for the last 4 1/2 yrs I don't have the needs to buy buy, I no longer enjoy shopping that much either.
Takes grit to put yourself out there like this. Thank you for sharing yourself with us!
I unsubscribed to most of the brands on social media and their newsletter. This way I won‘t get tempted to buy something new.
AidaJamilaMUA Me too! Omg that has helped SO much
This helped me.
Yes!
3 years later and I still re-watch all of these videos to give myself inspiration and motivation to keep myself in check. Thank you ❤️
Please stop apologizing. I enjoy your videos. Thank you.
😭thank you - haha I'm so Canadian - apology is in our veins. 😆
Anti hauls are also great) or styling things you already have, shopping your own wardrobe 😎
Keecha M this is actually an amazing perspective I never thought of - thank you!
Applause!
thank you SO much, Samantha! I am floored! 😭
I liked this video as soon as you said you were tired of shopping and spending money. I am sick and tired of shopping. My closet is out of control.
Mine too - youve got this!
And then my husband bought me another one as a gift because he saw I enjoyed it so much.
i loveeeeeee this!
❤️
*thank you*
No “thing” will ever make you feel as good as being debt free. The day you realize that you are no longer a slave to debt is such a high.
@@Christinamychas Yes, you know exactly where you money has gone! It helps being more conscious of what you buy!
Some of my rules are:
- Monthly budget (currently max.
Thank you for writting them down in the description box because it's easier to remember!
I always leave the tags on or keep the box for at least a week or before I actually wear an item and if i don’t wanna immediately wear it its usually a sign that I didn’t need it afterall and I can return it 😊
Can you do a video on inventory of everything you own? It might be helpful to everyone
ivanete roark great idea! I’ll def add that to the list!
Thank you for sharing! I started low buy for shoes and clothes since February this year. It's been great to become less tied to the materials in my life and appreciate the things I already own better.
so much amazing!
Thank you providing all these specifics. I recently discovered a no buy year and really appreciate you breaking down a low buy & no buy year. This is a realistic approach I can definitely take!
You 100% described my relationship with buying things. Thank you for some realistic ideas to consider! Definitely doing a low buy this year!
A really genuine, thought provoking discussion of our consumerist society and how it effects us each individually. Sounds like you've found (or are finding) a really healthy way to live.
Finding for sure ❤️ it’s very fluid but always being developed and refined - thank you jazmine!
When I was a student my “rule” was all my hobbies had to save money or make money. It worked out really well actually :) I still do this
Rebecca Anne explain!
I think this is great! So like if you like knitting as a hobby, then you sell the blankets or scarves or mittens you made? Great set of rules - love that perspective.
After watching your previous video, I used your tip and unsubscribed
from every clothing and cosmetics company in my email, and cut way back on watching influencers.
This is so helpful. Yes, I keep buying white sneakers even though I have ten pairs. It is making me sick to think of the waste.
I’m going to try a low buy year in 2020. Just rediscovered your channel and I think it’s a sign 😂 thank you for inspiring me ❤️
I really understand how you feel my reason to stop shopping so much is I get sick of trying to pay off a credit card over and over again and again saying g this time I am going to stop so now I am debit free and I refuse to keep other people rich and me being broke.
I needed to see this video right now. I’m so far down the hole of shopping addiction and it’s constant with the clothing. I need help!
bbbsq11 I’ve been there too - you’ve got this. I hope it helps! Xo
Thank you so much Cathy! Omg I'm so flattered that you compared it to the French. They are truly goals.
Spot in! I love that Amazon has wish lists and poshmark lets you like items. I always use those and come back later if I still really want it later. Many times I do not. Helps me so much!
Love how you shared your real old habits!! And really appreciating all the comments
Thanks for sharing this. I can totally relate to that fading feeling you get after you buy something. Especially with skincare 😞
The skincare is tough for me too, esp since lately I've been breaking out like crazy. But remember it takes 4-6 weeks to see any result of any skincare regieme we are using! Stick to what you've got first! lol i need my own advice
Thanks for this post. I’m doing better myself but it’s very hard to break the habits. Strength to us all!
Me too! It's always up and down. You've got this and we've got each other!
I really like to see the George Harrison Album "All things must pass" there in the background behind you. Nice!
I can so relate to this. I am learning to deal with this and learning better boundaries. Thank you!
My husband and I are starting a low buy in 2021, I am so glad I found your channel.
For eye shadows and nail polishes that I own that I don't really use, I like to mix shades and create new ones. I have gotten the most compliments doing that because nobody else is going to have the exact same color. Experiment; you were not going to use them anyway, so you have nothing to lose.
Looking forward to your updates; this is very encouraging to me! Thanks for sharing your journey. 😀
Denise B thank you Denise! I’ve got some check ins coming xo
I find the "All Things Must Pass" in the back very symbolic. "Living in the Material World" would have also been pretty fitting.
There is no reason to be embarassed and set backs are part of the process - you own it! Well done :)
I am extremely thankful for your honesty and this video! Just thank you 🥺
i feel like i've been buying a little more lately even tho i've always been good about using stuff up (yup i finished lipsticks) and giving/decluttering instantly when i know i won't use that thing. so yeah this motivated me to start being more minimalistic again and focus on what i already have and love. thanks!
alsooo i'm continuing the video and i've been meaning to thrift for the longest time
Thank u fir helping me!!!
Thrifting is so fun, but I still acquire a lot of stuff. It is easy to afford, but I have to be careful about stuffing my closet.
Xo
Such terrific videos, inspiring me to do a no spend or low spend
I never heard "low buy" rules before. Very interesting!
Yes, so helpful will be reviewing for myself again 👍
Your honesty is refreshing. I’m in the process of doing the same.
Xo
Dont be embarrassed, I just started my journey 2 days back dear. Be proud
My biggest problem areas are books and thrifting. Thankfully I live a 2 hour drive from the stores so shopping is much more difficult 😁. Also, I don't shop online because the couriers don't deliver to where I live (I would have to drive the 2 hour trip to pick the package up).
ritalyn b that def works in your favor!!!
Shopping can be a social and bonding experience for a lot of women, how do you navigate when your mom or friends want to go???
It's actually been interesting - I've noticed what triggers me most is online shopping. When I'm physically in a store, I have noticed I dont have that "excitement" or rush response. I've gone into stores lately to check out recent sales out of bordeom or to kill time for example, and took note that I really felt "nothing" when I went in. So far I haven't had the "alcoholic walking into a bar" type of feeling in physical stores. My issue is online so I will need to tackle that more. So I think shopping with friends so far has been ok if that makes any sense at all!
@@a.w5533 Love that idea - just pretend you are their personal shopper :)
I’d love to try a low buy year . I been a shopaholic most of my life. I’ve always considered it my therapy
Loving the George Harrison album in the background.
Great! About second hand, agree 100%, you can find good thing for a funny price!
Having a budget is a game changer! And being realistic about it.
Rules:
1. Only ethically and sustainably made or second hand - research what you want to invest in, purchase from brands or designers that care about the materials, the environment, where they come from and who made them. That way fast fashion generally falls out of the picture.
2. Add it to a list - check if you still want it and can afford it at a later date - save up for special items
3. Investment pieces - will it be worn for many years, is it good quality, is it a replacement and will it stay in style?
Further questions to ask:
- What impact does spending have on my budget, my self-worth and those around me?
- Do you need it or just want it? What for? What else could you purchase for the same amount of money - or how much could you add to debt repayments or to savings instead?
Strategies that can help with minimising spending and curbing a bad habit:
- Face all expenses and debts head on. Work out a plan and a budget. Ask family or friends to help you with tackling the biggest issues first. Read up and inform yourself on how to set goals.
- Set up a seperate or multiple accounts with one account dedicated to frivoulous spending with a small weekly/monthly budget (what you can afford) all leisure and shopping comes out of that account and don't touch your other accounts
- Make excpetions - for example, allow small spending on certain items or for special occasions (weddings, etc) coffee, fitness, books, etc by prioritising what has real value and what you will use, brings joy
- Invest in experiences not things - like making a regular date to meet a friend for dinner or lunch, seeing a film, etc
- check your budget daily - small savings can be extremely fulfilling!
- don't beat yourself up if you have set-back
:) :) :)
Nadia Brandstätter these are an amazing set of guidelines!!
Really excellent tips. So timely for so many. This is using your “influence” for good. 👍😉😃.
This was so helpful and so needed and SO GOOD. thank you! 💋
With new trends I try to find similar thrifted options to see if I really like the trend or not. Specifically trends that are not as timeless/classic.
A couple things I do are:
I put things ins shopping carts and reevaluate in a few days.
Please keep the videos coming!!
you can face this and win! youve got this babe xo
Thanks❤️
Thank you. I needed to find your channel more than I realised ♥️
It's been up and down - I have a check in coming on it all soon! xx - I think this is a great plan babe!
