      I also heard this from all 4 of my Grandparents, and my Great-Grandmother.! So, we did! MY WWII parents added "is this (car) trip necessary? to save on gas (which was strictly rationed) and to bunch up errands into one trip and plan a circular route and take other people with me and do things together!
      I still quilt using all our old clothes, make candles and soap (using my Grandmother's recipe) and bread. soups and stews and sauces are good ways to use up leftovers, refinish small wood furniture and make our own music, artwork and scrapbooks etc. never at a loss for something interesting and useful to do!

      Absolutely right! I had a full wardrobe and I decided to wear it out before buying anything new. How long did I wait? Four years! FOUR years! I think three times before buying anything now; a very good experience. How much do I save every year? 2 salaries + 26%tax= CAD 10.000.

    I started to put away £500 a month. I was planning on leaving my job as I was being bullied. Although I was earning quite a lot it gave me great satisfaction to say "I'm out of here. Do it yourself". I had been leading up to this for maybe 10 years. My health was declining due to workload etc. I also had 3 miscarriages whilst working. I decided to give my body a break and walked out. Everyone thought I was mad. However a year after I managed to have my son who is now 2 and I wouldn't want it any other way. Doing a no buy and pay yourself first was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

      Way to go!! Literally, lol. Enjoy your kid, they grow fast...long days and short years, somehow. Pick your battles. I focused on safety and morals...the rest works out(she's 25 and awesome). Buy clothes at thrifts, a lot of stuff is close to new...Kids grow fast. Ask your friends for hand-me-downs if their kid is bigger. And if at some point they wear their sandals on opposite feet...as long as they don't trip...don't trip, if they do it's safety... I'm in charge there...responsible for raising a decent human who contributes to society in someway. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during this pandemic and social crisis

      @@tammystockley-loughlin7680 Aww thanks. You're right about the long days, and what seems like short nights. As fast as I get to sleep I get woken up for more 'learning and non stop getting everything out of a cupboard or draw that isn't empty already. Safety and morals. I think you're absolutely right, thank you. I'm already making him wear a 'high vis vest' to go over his coat if we go out for a walk at night - although if I know it will be super busy I will use reins. I wonder how old he will be before I hear "mum" and he won't do some of these safety things or wear a coat, warm hat etc. Lovely to hear about your 25 year old. Hello Tara
      I am sad to hear that your job (workload & stress) took a toll on your health & you had miscarriages. That should not be happened. Nobody should suffer because of jobs. Jobs is for us to practice our skill & knowledge, to give our time for service and in return, we are paid salary.
      If it starts to be detrimental to our body, soul, hearts, then NO. It's good that now you are doing well. Live on your term. 👍

    Sometimes I just put stuff in my cart on Amazon when I feel like shopping. Leave it there. Then later on in the week I move it to save for later. If I haven’t needed it in a month it just stays there and I don’t buy anything impulsive anymore. I have been doing this for about 2 years. Saved a lot:-) hope this helps someone

      I'm a recovering "retail therapy" person myself. I've been impulsive and wanting to learn or do new hobbies and things, then the desire goes away and I have a ton of stuff I have no real knowledge or even time to use right. So, my no-buy year starts tomorrow (Monday reset day) & it's gonna be ALL about capitalizing on the things I've already bought, making great stuff, learning new instruments... all that stuff. And feeling more competent and in control will likely curb those depressive episodes that tend to lead to retail therapy. I have a library full of books to read and tubs of yarn to create things... not gonna be bored, that's for sure.

      @@KirstyKirby Just talk to most people over 60, that was a way of life for majority of North Americans..... basics only. Large families and hand me downs. We lived basics unlike what those younger think living basics is today.
      Outhouse, gas lanterns, water pump outdoors, maybe not all the time, but try a year of that,..... with 7 children in a house and only a wood stove.
      It is amazing how one can live with basics.
      When I say basics, I mean toilet paper and a toilet in the house, running water, indoor plumbing, a good heat source, an electric stove, now that is a luxury and many times I forget what life was like for that one year when we were young, and then many years with below poverty level...
      Basics are sometimes leaving out butter, and no margarine, and no peanut butter. Having bread, fruit and veggies is enough. Meat is a luxury, but that did not hurt us because less meat is good. Watering down shampoo and dish soap.
      Watering down ketchup bottles to make it last.
      Absolutely no frills with food, and cosmetics were unheard of, other than the huge bottle of lotion or shampoo. Cheap brands.
      A huge honking bag of puffed wheat.
      Ah, the good ol days.

    I did a 6-month no buy during Spring and Summer last year! My husband and I were, like you said, “aggressively saving,” which we called “financial lockdown.” We were able to pay off both of our cars, and we’re now basically debt-free, which feels amazing. We’ve loosened our budget a bit again, but not buying anything extra for a while has changed us, too!

      Financial lockdown - love it! 😂 That’s amazing Keira, fantastic result and I can imagine it feels absolutely brilliant!
      It will be interesting to see what happens as lockdowns start to lift across the world. Some analysts are predicting a huge bounce back in spending and that lots will spend all their savings in some sort of mad spree - but I’m not so convinced. I think an awful lot of people, like you and I, will have recognised that we need a lot less and will continue to save regardless.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +25

      Hi Sarah I know exactly what you mean, doing a no buy has been incredibly eye opening as I too found that over time I was less interested in ‘stuff’. As you say there will always be things we need and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having things you want - but I’ve found that when I sit back and wait, most of the things I find I’m not that bothered about having. Whilst I officially finished my no buy when filming this, I’ve not bought anything other than one thrifted dress!
      Good luck with your savings goals, I’ve massively found having this helped me really question if I wanted something. I am currently awaiting exchange on a property and being so close to achieving that goal makes all the ‘sacrifice’ feel completely worthwhile. Xx

      I found the pandemic eye opening in similar respects, prior to March 2020 I often would pop into shops to kill time between work appointments and make little purchases without really thinking, most of them relatively inexpensive. But like you, I found when I was trying to declutter before moving house I had so much stuff, and many duplicates!

    I have done more of a re-directing of my finances. Living in the heart of Phoenix, I would spend approximately $40 a day eating out my meals & coffee. A year ago, I decided to take that same money & make/eat homemade food. Obviously, I had an enormous amount of food I was purchasing. So I learned how to dehydrate, & can & freeze meals. I now have a fully stocked pantry, freezer, and long term supply for emergencies. Last year at this time, I had about 2 day’s of food in my house. Feels so good knowing it didn’t cost me any extra and now in an emergency, I will be fine for several months. Thanks for this video!!

    I did a no buy for a year and a half and was able to save money for a downpayment for a whose. Now, knowing how much houses are here in Canada a small simple house in some parts of Ontario now goes for 400k and over. And that's a small house. I even hand washed my own laundry just so that I could save on using the machine. My clothes even came out cleaner than the machine. I think it’s been a year or so that I keep a budget and still prefer to only spend minimally as a need arises. I continue to use what I have - it’s amazing how long things last when you just use them in a normal everyday life way. I started putting a sticker on for example my face cleanser when I opened it (started using) and it helped me see that I truly only need to buy a face cleanser twice a year so then I can buy two for the year if I see a good sale.

Thanks for showing us it’s possible and all the benefits it offers. I do have one no buy I am consistent and proud of: I don’t buy any animal products for myself. Being vegan has also allowed me to self cure my high cholesterol, triglycerides, overweight and elevated blood pressure. I don’t know how much money I have saved by only buying fruit, vegetables, nut, grains and seeds as they’re expensive especially the organic ones, but I don’t have the medical bills and problems I would have if I still ate animal products. I feel much happier in myself as before I’d just be looking for items that caught my eye. Thank you and well done. 😊

    I did something very similar when saving for a family visit from N Z to the U K. My strategy was to never buy on the day I saw an item but to tell myself I would buy it tomorrow. Needless to say the item was not purchased. The savings in a year that was frugal were amazing. We had our trip and I developed a mindset that said to question myself before spending. Great outcome

I found I almost enjoyed the challenge of seeing if I could save more and more each month.

    I appreciate your video and I am going to try this. One thing I spend a lot of money on is eating out and ordering delivery meals. I am going to try to limit that to once a month this coming year. Also, I tend to thrift store shop, which seems to be smart, but I tend to buy things I really don't need. So, this coming year I can only buy things that I absolutely need when I thrift. No more buying vintage jewelry just because it is pretty and is only $4. No more buying another winter scarf because it is cashmere and only $2.99 (I have a whole closet full of scarves and tend to wear the same two or three and none of the others. I think I will be surprised when I count up the savings at the end of the year. Thanks for the idea. This inspired me.

I also eat at hospital canteen, which is heavily subsided. I just spend money on my family meals & groceries. Guess how much I saved for a year? 70% of my net salary.

Another thing I would highly recommend, once the pandemic issues clear and you feel more secure in your job is investing in your retirement. My husband (of 40 years now) started me investing in IRA’s in my late 20’s and WOW! What a difference compound interest makes on your future.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      I agree, compound interest is amazing. It’s a shame that in the U.K. interest rates have been so low on savings for over a decade now. It’s promoted lending (because it’s ‘cheap money’) and saving or investing has fallen out of favour.

      @@KirstyKirby Yes, the powers that be appear to want to keep people in debt, don’t they? However, the mutual funds our IRA’s are invested in over time have beat bank interest rates consistently and significantly. The down side is you can’t touch the money until retirement. Its amazing to me that so many people think that this no buy year is a challenge that one chose to do and feel proud conquering, when so many people live like this constantly. I live like this constantly. Only buying what I need. Can't afford to buy "wants". Millions of people live like this. Sometimes, you also have to choose to buy a certain need instead of another because there isn't enough money.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      As I have said many, many, many times, I appreciate that I am hugely lucky for my lot in life and appreciate that some people have much less than I do. Even so I am far far from rich. I’ve also had points in my life where I struggled massively financially. I know what it is to have very little.
      We live in a very materialistic society, depending on someone’s age, this consumer lifestyle has been the norm throughout their lives.
      When you personally advocate for buying less, why wouldn’t you be happy that it’s being encouraged outside of those who do this because they have no money?
      Disposable income is necessary for people to be able to donate to charity or help others, it’s not a bad thing to challenge the way someone spends money.

    I just found your video! I have set myself a goal of no spending every other month this year and in the alternate “spend” months it will be based on my budgeted allowance! My allowance will be cash only so if I find something that I really want that is bigger than what I have in my cash envelope, I will have to save for it!!

      Sounds like a great plan Delia - good luck!

    This is so motivating! Starting my first no-buy year NOW! I think I am more excited to see how much time I free up as I've discovered I waste a lot of time browsing.

      Omg yes! At first I almost didn’t know what to do with myself, I had no idea how much time I really spent ‘shopping’ whilst sat at home!

    Thank you for an inspiring video. Congrats on being successful in doing "no buy". Here's hoping that you are healthy holistically as well still employed. Starting my "no buy" year.

      Good luck with it Dawn. Yes still employed 🙂 Finding the whole pandemic situation hard as most people are, but we will all get there I’m sure.

    COVID was an excellent reason to never eat out or purchase anything new ever again! I now work from home, so no need for an expensive wardrobe. I never go out anymore, so the savings has been astronomical. Will keep doing this the rest of my life.

      It’s certainly been a silver lining in this horrible period of history. I worked from home too and it really does alter your perception on what is needed. Great to hear you have managed to save so much

    Did something similar not by a plan but due to the fact that I started this online budgeting app called YNAB one year ago. It's funny how when I was watching my money closely and knowing I wanted to pay off bills, I lost the urge to spend money as a hobby - gardening center, clothes, Home Goods and even my grocery bill went waaaaay down. I am just completing one year and it was lovely to hear what you did and why you did it. Some of why you did it was similar - but I had debt and a rental where I was renting out rooms in a house across country, i was working a w2 contract job which was only temporary, and I was self-employed in an industry that was hit hard by rising interest rates. I had fear myself and my life was a bit too complicated with finances. Thanks for posting. Definitely true that it was life changing.
