    You inspired me to do a three month no buy. My three months is up on April 18th. I’m so proud of my self that I actually did it. I was able to save approximately $2300 which will allow me to go on a three week vacation without stressing out about money :) But most importantly this experiment totally changed my mindset about my spending habits. Thank you !

    I admire your humility in responding to those comments, very classy and respectful. I admit that I would be very annoyed 😂. No buy is like minimalism, it has various meanings and forms and doesn’t have to be extreme. I hope you and your family have fully recovered from Covid, cheers!

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      It’s a shame that people couldn’t see the positive aspect and immediately jumped to criticism or arguing about what a no buy is. I would agree with you there, to some people a gym membership would be ‘essential’ for their physical and mental well-being. In that case I say keep it, just cut out the rest for a period if you want to try a no buy. It definitely doesn’t have to be extreme at all. So many odd comments about toilets in the garden and what soap I should have used 😂 oh well, as the saying goes ‘there’s nowt as queer as folk’
      Yes we are all fine thank you, it’s not overly pleasant for a day or so, but has been uneventful for us all. X

      Very true. I try to answer each and every comment if I can, even the ore mean or rude ones, but tbh I might start ignoring some, not because I only want to engage with people who don’t criticise but because I’ve found some of these people are quite frankly ridiculous. They don’t stop. They go on and on with misinformed comments or write their own narrative about things I’ve never said or done. Probably best to leave them to it. 🤷‍♀️

      I find most of it is fine past the expiry date, if it smells bad etc then it’s absolutely going in the bin, but I’ve had no issues with using things past the use buy date. I’m more strict on eye products like mascara, but other than that I’ve had no issues either.

    I absolutely loved your no buy video and other videos too, they have been both inspiring and educational. I feel society has almost been brainwashed into using consumerism to make ourselves feel as if we are ‘more’ (even to our own detriment financially) and your video has helped me become more conscious about how I consume and what I buy. Sorry you have had trolls trolling your videos, please keep sharing your experiences!

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      So pleased to hear you enjoyed them Ivana. Yes we do seem to live in a consumer capitalist society, and advertising works! I still like ‘things’, but like you I’m trying to be conscious and mindful with what I do buy. I tend to try to focus on only buying something I REALLY want, and try to consider the quality of the item and if I will really get value from it.
      Tbh I’ve probably had an easier ride than most regarding negativity being a small account. I think a few people just had real tunnel vision in regards to a no buy. It was like they just couldn’t get their heads around it and were insisting I should change the entire video and not call it a no buy, but a budget year or something of that nature. Rather odd, lots of condescension and patronising advice, but they’re probably lonely or bored really. 🤷‍♀️ Thankfully the really vile comments (which I didn’t include) were only a handful. Xx

    Watching your video inspired me more after being a minimalist for eight years but the last part really made me laugh about the bidet. I live in a row apartment with bidet but I still buy toilet paper every quarter of the month. I don't wear make ups and lipstick for decades aside last December 2023 that I bought a mascara and a lip/chic tint when graduated from practical nursing course. But yeah, I love watching your videos. I barely comments on videos, unless they are really inspiring for me. Thank you for sharing.

      Good luck with keeping going with it - I found it was challenging at first but gets easier over time. Yes I think that’s likely the best thing to do, even when I try to engage with some that are more misinformed than nasty, it ends up like fighting with a pig, no one wins and you just end up both rolling around in the mud and everyone comes off a bit dirty! 😂

Clothing has always been my Achilles heel - I love them! But like you Ive looked at all the beautiful things I already have and it’s so true, you can only wear one outfit at a time. I watched your video in late 2021 which inspired me to do a no buy in January 2022. It helped me realize that so much of my spending were impulse purchases. Kirsty, great to see you back and looking so well.
    I thought of the queen as you answered some of those comments: " never complain, never explain"!! Honestly, some people will find something negative in just about anything and they are not worth and time and energy in explaining.
    On spending to 'save the economy', that is just a line we are fed by the powers that be, often when they've not done their job well. It is everyone's responsibility to live within their means and save for a rainy day if they can. Spending on things we don't need or want for some perceived benefit to the economy only plunges people into hardship whilst destroying our precious planet at the same time. If we spend ourselves into poverty we become an un-necessary burden on the economy in the long run. I love that you always demonstrate balance and common sense, sadly not everyone understands this!

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Madeleine! Yes I agree, I was only speaking with my mum about it yesterday and saying that whilst i try to answer every comment I can, even the critical ones, some of these people just aren’t worth it. It’s a massive time and energy suck as you point out. I’ve also realised through engaging with some, as odd as it might sound some are elderly ladies who probably just don’t understand some of the more modern concepts. I’m trying to think of them like my gran, she’s old, I get internally exasperated at some of the things she says or odd outdated ideas she holds, but it’s never worth arguing about it.
      I love that - you are so right, if we all don’t take responsibility for our own money management in the best way we can, we will potentially end up a burden on the state ourselves and ultimately other taxpayers. (Of course some need that support through no real fault of their own)

    Loved this, I am currently doing a low buy, I just didn’t feel committed enough for a full no buy only because I have a young daughter and feel like now I can take her places and do things with her without pending lockdowns happening! I am however only buying items second hand for us both as she grows so fast and my body is still changing from having her! Loved this video, glad to see you upload again 💜 xx

      I understand completely! I know many people got out and about through the last two years, but I found all the rules and prebooking etc just really made even the thought of it so stressful! One of the things I’m so excited about for spring and the weather getting better is going to some of my favourite national trust places armed with my camera, I’ve missed going to places so so much!
      Second hand is awesome, I love that so many more are embracing it now, and yes kids grow so so quickly. I had loads of hand me downs from my cousins growing up (so essentially second hand) and no one ever knew, they were beautiful so who cares! Xx

    The bidet comment was absolutely hilarious!!! Thanks for your videos, your earlier ones really inspired me to do a no buy and to plan it all. I initially decided to do a no spend January and I'm loving it so much I'm keeping going. I have only bought replacement toiletries and most of them I used Christmas gift cards for. Also bought a dress from vinted and allowing myself a small amount over the year for this, and i still eat out max twice a month - so more a low buy. It has made me so much more conscious of everything i spend from groceries and petrol to things I think i want. I am so grateful I've started this given the cost of living crisis. I am already on a low budget as I don't earn a lot, but even then I've already saved hundreds. Sadly when you're poor, places like Primark suck you in because they're cheap and you just want to feel that kick of spending like everyone else seems able to. Before you know it, it adds up to hundreds over a year! I am loving this.

    • @KirstyKirby

      Hi Deborah, I’m so pleased to hear your no buy / low buy has been such a positive experience!
      I do understand what you mean about having a lower budget, it’s hard sometimes as these fast fashion places do have great prices, and I accept when I’m sometimes talking about buying quality (which usually come with a higher price tag) then in many ways I’m coming from a position of privilege. (That said I’m not buying insane designer stuff either) You are right though, those little shopping trips, £20 here, £30 there add up immensely over the year. I’ve sometimes regretted doing it in the past as I would say oh I really want x but it’s too expensive - and then turn around and spend the exact same amount on lots of cheaper items! 🤦‍♀️
      Thanks so much for watching xx

    Love these no-buy videos! Keep up with the quality uploads, I regularly rewatch your videos just to keep myself on track and remind myself that I do not need consumerism to maintain my happiness. Most purchases are non-essential and the money could have been put to better use. My family is one of those that doesn't enjoy travelling, just the hassle of making sure bookings are in place, getting to the right places at the right time, sleeping in an unfamiliar place and rushing around puts a lot of stress on everyone so we'd rather just spend the money getting a bottle of wine and enjoy it in the comfort of our own home. It's what we realize we enjoy, and so it does not feel like deprivation in any way. Sometimes, we find it weird how people love travelling so much, and I'm sure they think the same of us too but to each their own! :)

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      So pleased to hear you are enjoying my content Kelly and that they help keep you on track with your goals. Travel is such an odd one, it almost sold to us that we should all want to travel, see as much off the world as possible before you leave the earth, all that jazz. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing new places and meeting people from other cultures, but travel just isn't that much of a priority either, like you I find the actual travel part quite stressful - happy once there and again when home, but the bit in-between I loathe. Some people have said to me before, 'there is no way I'd forego a holiday just to decorate my house, that can wait', but that makes no sense to me, I live in my house almost every single day, I will always prioritise that over a week or two abroad. The idea that we can all have it all is nonsense and I think more of us should be brave enough to step outside of the expected norms and say that's just not for me. As you say each to their own!

    • @Kelly-vn5eo
      @Kelly-vn5eo 2 года назад

      @@KirstyKirby Yes precisely! All the marketing around travelling and jet-setting instagram pics made me feel like travelling is a part of life that I'm missing out, like I SHOULD love travelling, rather than stemming from a genuine interest in it. I share the same sentiments with you where I'd rather spend on home renovations than on travelling. The money is better utilized when I am enjoying my home every single day, than just over a period of 1-2 weeks of travel. Besides, the money spent on a home is likely to provide returns as part of the cost of home improvement if one day you choose to sell it, but money spent on travelling will never be recouped, it's lost forever.
      Consumerism is such an expected norm nowadays that people seldom question who are the ultimate beneficiaries of such mass exploitation of earth's resources and our hard-earned money - definitely not us, the everyday normal people. People in the past have lived with much lesser, I find that it's more peaceful to seek genuine contentment from our inner selves than find validation in comparing materials goods. There's always going to be the next best thing, it's a never ending cycle. I find that enjoying a homemade coffee, reading and taking a walk are things that make me happy. Those activities don't cost much, and provide me with more happiness that shopping can ever bring. I can repeat it everyday without risking financial ruin whereas the dopamine hit from shopping is ever so fleeting and much less long lasting.
      It's important to realize that money spent and happiness are not directly proportional to each other. Just because we spend more, does not always mean we're getting more happiness. Nowadays, I find that appreciating the money in bank balance keeps me happier than frittering them away on random purchases. Every time I need a dopamine hit, I log in to my bank account and smile at the growing balance! :p

    In 2022 I had plan to do a no buy for a year and I’m glad I started. This year everything hit me at once medical bills, car accidents, paying not just my taxes but my daughter’s taxes and medical bills. Many things broke down at the house so we had to fix everything which cost a lot for repairs. So far everything I had planned to save is impossible at this moment. I’m still trying to catch up. You've got to love a 'holier than thou' RUclips commenter. I'm not doing a no buy or low buy but I am mindful about what I spend, I stopped shopping online in 2020 and will continue to support bricks and mortar stores of all sizes. I read somewhere early pandemic that no country has ever improved the health of its citizens by making itself poorer - very true. In my opinion the response to the pandemic was totally disproportionate to the actual situation.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      Absolutely! There’s so many wider health impacts of people becoming poorer, it impacts diet, sleep, lifestyle etc. Coming from a low socioeconomic group was shown to be associated for poorer outcomes for Covid too. I know what you mean, I’ve been very careful about sharing things related to the pandemic as it’s become so polarising, but even back in late 2020 I was saying to friends - of course I don’t want anyone to die if we can avoid it, but who is going to pay for all this? We are in war time level debt and our children’s children will still be paying for all this. So many poor decisions have been made and the U.K. are still spending millions on Covid ‘messaging’, taxpayers money I might add. I want to put my head in my hands so often.

    I think a no buy for a whole year is really amazing. I think I don’t buy much but if I added the few drugstore makeup products, thrift clothes etc it wouldn’t be huge by any means but it is definitely some money. I think you did a wonderful job. I agree that hard times may be coming and we all may learn no buy with no choice. Edit again. I don’t believe the comments that for years and years they haven’t bought anything. That is so true - its easy to spend about $100 on plants/fertilizer/soil etc. for my vegetable garden and I doubt I get the return in produce LOL - you just have to do it because you enjoy it and unless you really are a green thumb, it probably isn't realistic to think you can fully sustain your family on veg from your garden. My peppers never turn out and neither do the carrots or corn or broccoli. Tomatoes and zucchini are about the only vegs I can grow and I live in CA which is considered ideal weather for crops. LOL. And besides that, there is only so much zucchini my family will eat before they rebel - even when I try to slip it in as zucchini bread.

      Sooo easy to spend on gardening, plants are just lovely and it’s so satisfying getting things to grow, but it flowers or vegetables. But rarely is it ever free! I’m not too bad on some flowers now, but like you some of my veggie experiments haven’t exactly worked 😂 Omg you are so right about getting bored of certain produce. Love the image of stealth zucchini hiding! 😉

    When people say "thats not balanced" they are operating under the assumption that how they live is right and balanced. But that really depends on your own perspective which is formed by your past and what you see in your immediate surroundings. So what might seem balanced to them will be super strict to one person and wasteful spending to another.
    I love doing no spend months. It just really helps me focus on our family goals and being able to help family and friends when a need rises.

      I love that, you are absolutely right. We all judge everything against what we feel is ‘normal’ when really normal doesn’t particularly exist.
      Me too, I had a no spend month in February, and almost one in March (bought garden plants in the last two days of the month so I guess I can’t count that). It really makes you realise how absentmindedly we can shop if we allow it, and how often that thing you thought you wanted falls from your wish list with just a little time.

      Some of the most beautiful ones are pricey 🥴 To be honest though I’ve purchased great plants from places like B&Q and Homebase, they seem to be nice quality and almost everything I’ve purchased over the years has grown well from there (the only ones that haven’t have been when I’ve been quite inexperienced) They often have a few clearance bits really cheap but you have to drop on and sometimes they’re in clearance as they’re a bit sorry for themselves and you can’t always rescue them. My mum managed to find some nice spring baskets full of violas and pansies from Home Bargains for only £2.99 so that might be worth a look. I’ve also started getting into planting bulbs, it can be quite inexpensive and if you choose perennials over annuals then potentially you have them for years.
      I’ll keep the videos coming, I think it’s really sad we aren’t taught more about finances in school etc, it would be so much more valuable than algebra! 😉

    I would be annoyed so much by some comments, kudos to you for answering them so classy! I believe such a challenge requires self-reflection and one has to know and understand themselves in order to draw the lines of what a no-buy would include. I, personally, as a very introverted person, would be absolutely fine with nature, parks, library, walks in the city for fun/recreation but someone on the far side of extroversion may require more socialising and perhaps could swap eating out for potlucks and bbq with their friends. Even if someone pushes themselves a little means something, money- and mindset-wise!

I did have time of no / less money in my life after my school just had part time jobs. Thankfully I had a garden and know a bid of eatable plants so I got around. A real no buy does not exist. @@flooshoomoo7104 agree - I don’t think it removes 🧻 in most peoples houses completely. In the U.K. our homes are really very small in comparison to large parts of the world - most bathrooms are around 6ft by 6ft in most new build homes, you simply can’t even fit a bidet in. They’re not all that popular here, yes there’s the fancy toilets, but that would mean a refit - which would be a bit daft to do just to save on loo roll. I think ROI wouldn’t make sense. LMFAO. This hilarious because I've been doing this MY ENTIRE LIFE. When you live in POVERTY, you have no choice, but not to buy anything. It has taught me many valuable lessons though. It's taught me not to want AT ALL. I live on 400 dollars A MONTH. That's it. I get 900 in total for the entire month from disability and then I pay rent and bills and I'm left with 400 for the entire month and that goes to things like body wash, shampoo, conditioner, cleaning supplies, toilet paper.... Things of that nature. I've basically been living this way my whole life since birth. I grew up poor and the cycle just continued through my adult life. So yeah. This is easy when you DON'T HAVE A CHOICE. Be grateful that you can afford to live this way BY CHOICE. That shows that you actually have money to spend! How fortunate you must be to not live in POVERTY that you have a choice to control how your money is used. Must be a real blessing to be able to have to figure out how to control your wanting nature! When you live in POVERTY, THERE IS NO MONEY TO SPEND AND THERE'S NO MONEY TO SAVE!!! And prices just keep rising from the greedy corporations all around us. Everyone wants to get rich quick. But how lucky some must be to be able to choose not to spend their money! This is only doable for people who DON'T live in poverty. Us poor people have been putting out wants on hold for most of our lives. Interesting how people with cash are choosing this life style! Imagine having money to be able to control like this. 😂😂😂 Can't believe that it took a whole pandemic for people to change their wanting behaviors when us poor people have been putting our wants on hold for almost our entire lives. You didn't figure out any secret or magic formula. I've lived this way for 36 yrs. There is no wanting. Wanting things is something that I just literally CANNOT afford. And saving is also impossible. I live on the bare minimum. Wants are non existent and survival is necessary. Very depressing life, but that's how I grew up and continued on.

      Please explain to me where at ANY POINT I was ungrateful? Or suggested that people who are only just making ends meet is because they buy too much? I did not. Ever. Nor would I. I also didn’t explain what income I had left after paying basic bills, $400 is a lot to spend a month on toilet paper and body wash.
      Can you not appreciate that we live in a society where many spend more than they earn and we have debt burdens higher than ever before - could you not take a moment to understand that I’m promoting that you can make a different choice? You don’t have to keep up with the Jones’s and you can utilise what funds you do have in better ways. I hardly think that’s a bad thing, but clearly you had decided I was a laughing stock without even thinking at all.
      I see you have edited to add further insults. Where exactly did I suggest it was a secret, or magic? Everyone knows you need to spend less than you earn, your sarcasm and nastiness is misplaced. At no point did I ever pass judgement or comment on those who live in poverty. I have nothing but consideration for those people, how could I donate to such causes without saving money and not spending it on unnecessary items. You clearly decided I’m just a bad person through a lens of your situation which I appreciate is hard - but I haven’t done you wrong and this is completely unnecessary and RUDE.
      As it happens after redundancy and the industry I was in shrinking considerably post covid I had to take a job that doesn’t even cover my basic bills. Much of my other expenses come out of my savings so you are actually better off than myself month to month right now.
